***REGRETFULLY WITHDRAWN***1968 Lotus Elan S3 Coupe (Type 36)

Lot # 425 (Sale Order: 26 of 70)

***REGRETFULLY WITHDRAWN***
  • Only three owners and remarkably less than 20,000 miles

  • Smartly finished in French Blue with a classic black interior

  • Mechanically recommissioned in 2002 after 30 years in storage

  • Further refreshed in 2015 prior to our vendor's purchase

  • This little Lotus has many more years of enjoyment to offer

The Series 3 Fixed Head Coupe arrived in 1965 and, in line with Lotus' intention to move upmarket and justify an increase in prices, fit and finish had been improved over the earlier Elans and the Coupe sported a considerably smarter dashboard. The new S3 further benefited from revised windows with frames to reduce cabin noise and of course, the windows were now electrically operated. Powerful, light in weight and endowed with exceptional handling, the Elan proved an immense commercial success for Lotus, slightly fewer than 9,000 being produced by the time production ceased in 1973.

This S3 was purchased new by a Mr David Penney of Dorking as a kit from Lotus agent, Gemini Cars, and built by the engineers at Walker Racing. After circa 19,850 miles had been covered, the car was placed in heated storage, remaining there for 30-or-so years before being re-commissioned around 2002. The tyres, brakes, shock absorbers, exhaust system and suspension donuts were replaced at this time. Mr Penney subsequently sold the Elan in 2005 through the Bonhams Beaulieu auction where it was acquired by its second owner and added to his large collection of British cars. Prior to that sale, it had benefitted from a light refresh including the carburettors, brake calipers, master cylinder, clutch reservoir, flexible hoses, and front suspension bushes. Some ten years later in 2015, the Elan was acquired by our vendor and once again appears to have been used lightly, now with an indicated mileage of 19,934 (atoc). Later knock-on drilled wheels and a metal-sprayed exhaust system are the only listed modifications from factory specification.  It remains smartly finished in Lotus French Blue with a black interior and bronze carpets and is supplied with its purchase invoice, and all bills for subsequent work, the owners handbook, and a very short list of owners.

Quite rightly, the Lotus Elan is today regarded as one of the finest British sports cars of all time and the S3 Coupe is arguably the most beautiful of all the early Elans. It seems to us that this little Lotus has been asleep too long and is now ready for the next chapter in its life.

2015 Kawasaki Ninja H2R

Lot # 426 (Sale Order: 27 of 70)

  • The world's fastest production motorcycle – 306bhp, rising to 321bhp with ram-air effect

  • Powered by a supercharged 998cc in-line four-cylinder. A world-first in production bikes

  • 300bhp and slick tyres mean that the H2R is track focussed and not road-legal

  • One of only 27 UK examples from 2015. Offered originally at £41,000

  • Just two owners and delivery miles only. Unused and, effectively, brand new

  • An amazing machine. Accompanied by supplying dealers and manufacturer's correspondence

Kawasaki made motorcycle history back in 2015 with the launch of the outstanding Ninja H2R.  It's a track-focused sports bike powered by a liquid-cooled 998 cc inline-four engine with a supercharger, producing 305.8 bhp at 14,000 rpm and maximum torque at 12,500 rpm. When enhanced by the 15 bhp from ram-air, that's around 320bhp - roughly the same as a 30-seater school bus.

The bike's specification includes Steel trellis frame with single-sided swingarm, dual 330 mm discs up front with Brembo M50 four-piston calipers, 250 mm disc at the rear with Brembo two-piston caliper, non-switchable ABS and adjustable engine braking, adjustable 43 mm KYB AOS-II fork, adjustable KYB shock, 9-level traction control, cruise control, 4->1 exhaust system, Ohlins steering damper, quick-shifter, full LED lighting and a 6-speed gearbox.

Each bike is built and inspected by a single technician in the Akashi factory in Japan and according to the official Kawasaki website, the H2R comes with a vehicle acknowledgement document. So, for your £41,000 list price what else did you get and what information is relayed?

  • Front and rear paddock stands and front and rear tyre warmers (don't even think about cold tyres)

  • The H2R should only be run on Bridgestone Racing Battlax V01F with specific compounds

  • Instructions on how to store the vehicle off the ground

  • Service inspections are required every 15 hours of engine operation above 8,000rpm

  • A 120dB exhaust, oh, and no kind of warranty

Despite these apparent drawbacks, the UK allocation sold out pretty quickly, one of them going to the owner of the example offered here, which was purchased from Seastar Superbikes in August 2015. Presented in unused, effectively brand new condition, this awesome machine comes with supplying dealers and manufacturer's correspondence relating to its purchase.

The last word goes to Bike magazine - "Know this: the new H2R isn't a game-changer. It's way more than that. This is a life-changer. There isn't another production vehicle on the planet that gets anywhere near the relentless power, head-splitting noise, and bloody-hell-fire-sweet-lord-help-me-now performance of Kawasaki's utterly mental H2R"

2003 Aston Martin Vanquish

Lot # 427 (Sale Order: 28 of 70)

  • Dramatic Callum-penned bodywork with the debut of the bonded aluminium platform

  • Fitted with a 6-litre V12 producing 460bhp and 400lb.ft

  • UK-supplied, right-hand drive with only 7,500 miles from new (atoc)

  • Finished in special-order Cannadi Fucile with a Pacific Blue interior

  • The cherished registration number 3 ABN is generously included in the sale

  • One of the best examples available and will reward any inspection

Unveiled at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show, the Ian Callum-designed Vanquish was an instant sales success and the fact that it was James Bond's transport of choice only added to the appeal. Featuring a 6.0-litre V12 generating nearly 450bhp mated to a six-speed paddle-shift gearbox, the car sat proudly at the top of Aston's range throughout its seven years of production. Aston Martin's position as the ultimate makers of British sports cars continues, bolstered by the muscular Vanquish, and when sprinkled with a little magic from the James Bond 'Die Another Day' connection, the image was complete.

This UK-supplied, right-hand drive Aston Martin Vanquish has covered just 7,500 miles from new (at the time of cataloguing) in the hands of its three owners. It’s finished in the stunning special-order colour of Cannadi Fucile, complemented by a Pacific Blue interior and has been part of our vendor’s significant private collection since 2008. During his ownership, the Vanquish has been kept in a professional de-humidified storage facility and presents very nicely indeed in the metal. The owner informs us he will arrange for the car to be freshly serviced and MOTd in time for the sale at Race Retro.

This is a fabulous example, fresh to market after 12 years of caring private ownership and its owner is generously including the private plate 3 ABN in the sale. This striking Vanquish will ensure that you stand out from the crowd in a contemporary classic and we thoroughly recommend coming to the 2020 Race Retro auction to see this V12 GT car in the metal for yourself.

1965/1998 Superformance AC Cobra SC Mk III

Lot # 428 (Sale Order: 29 of 70)

  • Built around 1998 by Superformance of California under direct licence from Carroll Shelby

  • Correct 400bhp Ford 'Windsor' 351 cubic inch engine, Tremec 5-speed manual box, a BTR Dana LSD

  • Ohlins dampers, Wilwood vented discs, Halibrand wheels, Smiths instruments. Drives superbly

  • Recommissioned by Le Mans Coupes Ltd., Crawley in 2009 at 9,850 miles. Current mileage 12,500 (atoc)

  • Fabulous in Guardsman Blue and Wimbledon White. Great registration ASP 1C (recently valued at £7,500)

  • Very special car, known history and provenance, an AC chassis number and realistically guided

It all started in 1961 when Texan Carroll Shelby wrote to AC Cars to ask them to build him a car modified to accept an American V8 engine. The rest, as they say, is history.

This particular car was built in or around 1998 by Superformance of Irvine, California under direct licence from Carroll Shelby as a continuation of his famed AC Cobras of the 1960's and, importantly, has an AC Chassis Number. The specification is extremely high and should not be confused with the plethora of similar-looking replicas. For example, the chassis is a heavy-duty, tig-welded, steel ladder-frame in 2" x 4" rectangular section with built-in crumple zones and a stainless steel roll-over bar. The correct Ford 'Windsor' 351 ci engine (over 400bhp) is mated to a Tremec 5-speed manual gearbox and power is distributed to the rear wheels through a BTR Dana LSD. The car has the original shifter gearchange, original handbrake, original Halibrand wheels/tyres and original Smiths instruments. The suspension is fully independent front and rear utilising the very best Ohlin dampers, it sits on Wilwood vented discs, all brake lines are braided, and even the 17-gallon fuel tank is stainless steel with a Monza filler cap. Finished in the smart period colour combination of Guardsman Blue with twin Wimbledon White stripes, this left-hand-drive car was acquired by its previous owner from Clive Sutton Cars of London in 2009. He then appointed the current Superformance importer, Le Mans Coupes Ltd., to collect the car and recommission it at a cost of some £6,277. He collected the Cobra from them with 9,850 miles recorded and it had covered just over 12,500 miles when purchased by our vendor in 2018.

The V5c states the original date of registration of the car as 1965 and the valuable registration number ASP 1C (recently valued at £7,500) pleasingly accompanies the car as does a comprehensive history file and the car's original leather presentation leather wallet containing the original owners manual. Having formed part of our vendor's collection, it has hardly been used recently and the time has come to let someone else have fun with this immaculate Superformance Cobra. This is a very special car with a clear history and is very realistically guided today.

1954 Aston Martin DB2/4

Lot # 429 (Sale Order: 30 of 70)

  • A lovely 1954, right-hand drive, DB2/4 with great history and current FIVA papers

  • Owned in the 1980's by Philip Gould, a founding member of the 80's pop band, Level 42

  • Over £30,000 spent during our vendor's ownership with marque experts, Nic Mee and Moto Technique

  • FIVA papers offering entry to the Mille Miglia recently secured and these may be transferable

  • Really lovely condition. Success in the 2016 Aston Martin Concours d'Elegance

  • With a fascinating history, this is Classic Aston ownership at its very best

The Aston Martin DB2/4 was launched from Feltham in October 1953 and was offered as a sporting 2+2 hatchback or an open drophead Coupe. Although similar to the DB2 it replaced, changes included a smaller fuel tank, rear suspension upgrade, wraparound windscreen, larger bumpers, and re-positioned headlights. A number of special bodied cars were also produced by Italian coachbuilders Carrozzeria Allemano, Bertone and Vignale who were commissioned at special request by private clients. David Brown had purchased the Lagonda company a few years earlier, primarily to obtain the W.O.Bentley designed, double overhead camshaft straight-six, which he wanted as a replacement for the ageing Claude Hill four-cylinder unit. He knew success in motorsport would benefit sales, and used the 2.6-litre, six-cylinder unit to power the works DB2s which were campaigned at Le Mans and across Europe throughout the early 1950's.

The DB2/4 engine (VB6J) was initially tuned to 125bhp, propelling the car to 120mph and 0-60mph in 11.2 seconds. However, in the summer of 1954, the capacity was increased from 2,580cc to 2,992cc, which raised power to 140bhp at 5,000rpm and reduced the 0-60mph time to ten seconds dead. Autocar described the DB2/4 in October 1953 as: "an expensive car designed to cater for the connoisseur of sports cars who is not limited by financial considerations.... a car of rare quality, unusual performance, exceptional road-worthiness and unrivalled versatility" - a description that, I suspect, Aston Martin would be proud to have applied to any of their current models.

LML 687 was first registered on the 26/05/1954, originally finished in Sea Green with a black leather interior and we understand that this DB2/4 spent much of its early life in Sussex, before being bought by a Mr Tidy in 1970, who kept the car until the early 1980's. Further detail within the cars substantial history file shows that Mr Tidy commissioned a significant restoration during his ownership and within the file, there are items of correspondence between Mr Tidy and various suppliers.

By the late 1980's, the Aston passed via a London dealer into the ownership of Philip Gould, a founding member and drummer of the 1980's pop band Level 42. Sometime later, well-respected restorer Andrew Thorogood was tasked with rebuilding the Aston’s engine and at the same time the wiring loom was replaced and the brakes and suspension were reconditioned. Inevitably, there was other minor work carried out to return LML 687 to health and we believe the account for all this came to around £17,000.

Mr Gould kept his Aston for almost ten years before passing custodianship to its next owner in 1997, and he, in turn, looked after the car for the following 20 years. He clearly cherished it hugely during this period and we can see from the owner’s file that between 2008 and 2015 the bodywork was substantially restored and a fresh coat of British Racing Green applied. The lovely patina of the interior was such that, on advice from specialists and fellow Aston owners, it was decided to leave as is rather than replace. The engine was rebuilt by leading Aston Martin specialist Davron, the carburettors were rebuilt, as were the front suspension and steering assembly. The brakes were relined and fitted with Alfin drums and, as a nod to practicality, an alloy radiator and electric fan were fitted. A custom-made twin stainless steel exhaust was also fitted. The results of all this work were so impressive that the car was awarded ‘Third in Class’ at the 2016 Aston Martin Concours d’Elegance at Duxford. Later that year it was decided to sell the DB2/4 after 20 years of ownership and our vendor purchased OOX 209 to add to his significant private collection.

1954 Austin-Healey 100/4 (BN1)

Lot # 430 (Sale Order: 31 of 70)

  • Delivered new in right-hand drive to Australia and repatriated to the UK in 2013

  • BN1 100/69 was finished in Healey Blue and sold to S.Todhunter on 25/11/1954 to be registered as ASL-158

  • Matching numbers (219137) and original colour. Heritage Certificate on file

  • Recent top-end rebuild with unleaded valves. Carbs and brakes fully overhauled

  • Gently patinated across all finishes, matching blue hood, side screens and tonneau cover

  • Good history file with the Heritage Certificate, current V5c, assorted invoices and receipts

This rather lovely and very early, right-hand drive, Austin-Healey 100/4 (BN1-219137) was dispatched from the Austin factory in Longbridge in September of 1954, finished in Ice Blue with a blue interior and matching blue hood, and destined for Australia. It was received there by Larke Hoskins Motors who were the NSW distributor for Austin-Healeys and allocated their Serial No 344 prior to being transported to John Crouch Motors in Flinders Street, Sydney where it arrived on November the 24th.  The very next day its eager first owner, a Mr S Todhunter, collected his gleaming Healey and registered it ASL-158. This is a spectacularly good looking car now so imagine how proud Sam Todhunter would have felt 65 years ago as he rasped his way around the streets of central Sydney on a warm afternoon.

Repatriated in 2013 by our vendor, a highly knowledgeable classic car collector, who hand-picked this car to ship back to the UK due to its excellent condition. Residing for almost 60 years in the warm dry climate of Australia the chassis was noted to be extremely well preserved.

Today this example remains in its original colour combination of Ice Blue paintwork with a blue interior and pleasingly is still partnered by its original engine. Overall the car presents with a wonderful even patination across all finishes, not at all tired or worn out, just well kept and really presentable, something, of course, that is always lost in a fully restored example. Reported to run and drive very well, this 100/4 has recently benefitted from a top-end rebuild with an unleaded valve upgrade and an overhaul of the carburettors and braking system. It's offered with wet weather equipment and its history file containing the Heritage Certificate supporting matching numbers, the current V5c and other assorted invoices and receipts.

Tricky to find in such beautiful condition, this quintessentially British classic is full of character and will always be highly sought after by both collectors and enthusiasts alike.

1993 Vauxhall Lotus Carlton

Lot # 431 (Sale Order: 32 of 70)

  • UK-supplied, one of just 284 right-hand drive cars built, excellent and unmodified

  • Showing only 47,817 miles (atoc) supported by a well-documented history file

  • Superb Imperial Green Pearlescent paintwork with an unmarked Anthracite leather interior

  • Well-balanced rear-drive chassis with 377bhp and a top speed of 176mph

  • Offered at a realistic guide price, examples this good rarely come to market

The legendary Lotus Carlton is the kind of car that comes along once in a generation. At a time when really fast four-door saloons were the preserve of BMW and Mercedes, this Vauxhall (Opel) derived super-saloon arrived on the scene demolishing the opposition. Oddly, it wasn't its huge performance or masculine good looks that created the most fuss, but the fact that the Daily Mail was so outraged by its stated top speed of 176mph, that it declared it too fast for British roads. Of course, the Lotus Carlton - or Type 104 to Lotus aficionados - was nothing of the sort, and although it shared its major components with a mainstream executive car, its level of development across every aspect of automotive dynamics had resulted in a truly special performance car. It was powered by a twin-turbo version of the venerable straight-six used in the range-topping Senator, which developed a remarkable 377bhp. To achieve that figure, Lotus had put a lot of work into the 3.6-litre power unit, uprating and strengthening the bottom end, porting the 24-valve cylinder head (from the Carlton GSI), and fitting forged slipper pistons made by Mahle atop new Lotus-designed connecting rods tied to a counterweighted, forged steel crankshaft. The gearbox was the same six-speeder used in the Corvette ZR-1, the only transmission in GM's parts bin, capable of handling the car's monster torque. AP Group-C derived brakes - four-pot calipers with 330mm ventilated discs at the front and two-pot at the rear - sat behind specially developed Goodyear tyres.

First registered in March 1993, number 816 is a UK-supplied right-hand drive Lotus Carlton and today, 27 years later, still presents incredibly well. Indicating only 47,817 miles at the time of cataloguing, the Imperial Green Pearlescent paintwork is excellent as is the virtually unmarked Anthracite leather interior. Offered from long-term ownership, our vendor, a classic and performance car enthusiast, has over the years maintained his pride-and-joy to the very highest standards. Offered with the original and highly sought after Ian Adcock book, documented history file, current V5c, old MOTs and a fresh MOT ready for the sale.

These low production number Carltons are highly collectable, good examples rarely come to market and with (even by today's standards) blistering performance they represent a usable modern classic with legendary status. Offered at a realistic guide, this is a rare opportunity to join the rather exclusive club of Lotus Carlton owners.

1964 Aston Martin DB5

Lot # 432 (Sale Order: 33 of 70)

  • One of the most iconic and coveted of all British sports cars

  • A matching-numbers, UK-supplied, manual gearbox car in exquisite condition

  • Meticulously and methodically restored over a number of years with input from marque specialists Post Vintage Engineers, with JMB Services rebuilding the engine to unleaded 4.2-litre specification, producing a very healthy 316.3 lb.ft torque; upgraded with a Harvey Bailey shock absorber/suspension kit

  • Finished today in iconic Silver Birch coachwork and fully re-trimmed in Burgundy (3171) Connolly hide with Red Wilton carpet

  • The overall presentation of the car is as near as one could find to a new DB5, having covered less than ten miles since restoration, it really is fit for any Concours event

  • Accompanied by extensive documentation, it must be one of the very best DB5 examples available anywhere today in the market

  • On offer from a private collection of fastidiously maintained and correctly stored classics

  • An exceptional example from Aston's finest hour and not to be missed

Not merely the best-known model produced by Aston Martin, the DB5 saloon (as the factory called it for tax purposes) is generally regarded as one of the most famous cars ever built by any marque. Introduced at the 1963 Earls Court Motor Show, the DB5 was an obvious extension of the DB4, featuring similar Touring-designed coachwork and an enlarged 4-litre update of Tadek Marek’s race-engineered aluminium engine.

With 170 improvements over the preceding model, the DB5 was undoubtedly a superior driver’s car, and the company landed one of history’s most famous marketing coups when the DB5 was chosen as superspy James Bond’s transport for the 1965 film Goldfinger. With a modest production of 1,021 examples built through 1965, the DB5 has evolved into the marque’s most timeless classic, appealing to dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers alike.

The car presented here is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive, matching-numbers 1964 Aston Martin DB5 and is in simply exquisite condition, and one of the best examples of its type we have ever offered for sale.

The car was delivered new on the 03/06/1964 through agent Charles Sidney Ltd. to the first owner Messrs. H.B. Westle Ltd. of Leeds finished in Platinum with Blue Connolly hide and registered 999 JUM. According to the buff logbook on file, subsequent owners included Mr Richard Spurge of Bedford in 1972, Mr Graham Heath also of Bedford in 1973, a certain Mr Mark Hales of Bedford in 1974 and later Mr Raymond Boyles. Little is known of the car after this, but we understand it was later sold to Germany and passed through the hands of Aston Martin stalwart Desmond Smail before being acquired by Mr Nigel Parry of York in 2002.

Over the next ten years or so, Mr Parry took it upon himself to oversee the thorough and exacting resurrection of this prestigious car, commissioning specialists to carry out a complete ‘body-off’ restoration, with many images in the history file showing the extent of the work done and lengths gone to to ensure all corrosion was removed. Extensive body and chassis restoration were completed, which included the fabrication of front and rear body skins, new door skins, removal and replacement of inner and outer sills, replacement trailing arm mounts and jacking points, chassis outriggers etc. All this work was done alongside sourcing numerous OEM parts and components from marque specialists, including Post Vintage Engineers, themselves renowned AM restorers - who actually knew this car well and some of its history - and then helped conclude the work to finally finish the project, eventually offering the car for sale on behalf of the owner.

In addition, the suspension and braking system were completely rebuilt and upgraded with a Harvey Bailey shock absorber/suspension kit and the car fully re-trimmed in Burgundy (3171) Connolly hide with Red Wilton carpet, all finished to a very high standard.

At the crescendo of the project, in 2012, Mr Parry further instructed engine specialists JMB Services to rebuild the engine to unleaded 4.2-litre specification, costing almost £20,000, but producing a very healthy 316.3 lb/ft torque at 4165rpm and making the car very pleasant to drive.

1998 Bentley Turbo RT LWB

Lot # 433 (Sale Order: 34 of 70)

Reviewing the file prior to the sale the vendor noted the MOT had expired. This was therefore renewed on Saturday 15th Feb 2020, the RT unsurprisingly passing with no advisories, and confirming just 400 miles since the last test

  • UK-supplied, right-hand drive, 47,000 miles (atoc), and only two former keepers

  • Finished in Dark Sapphire with 'thick over thin' Sandstone fine lines

  • Sandstone hide, and Portland Stone Wilton over mats

  • Well documented maintenance record with recent attention from a well-regarded marque specialist

  • The last, rarest, most expensive and most powerful of the Turbo R line

The Bentley Turbo R was a high-performance model produced by Bentley Motors Limited from 1985 to 1997 and the R stood for "road holding", to set it apart from its predecessor, the square headlight Mulsanne Turbo. It initially inherited the turbocharged engine from the Mulsanne Turbo and also sported re-tuned suspension and wider tyres on alloy wheels, a first for a Bentley. From 1987, however, the Turbo R's V8 engine was fitted with fuel injection for added torque. Motor Trend called the Turbo R "The first Bentley in decades deserving of the famous name" in their review of the car on its introduction to the United States in 1989, with car enthusiast Jay Leno first in the queue.

The Turbo RT was the last, rarest, most powerful and most expensive of the Turbo 'R' line and was fitted with the 400bhp (298 kW; 406 PS) twin-turbo 6.75-litre V8 engine from the two-door Continental T. Performance was 'more than adequate' with a top speed limited to 150 mph. It is visually differentiated from other Bentley Turbo R models by its sports wheels, radiator mesh grille, and colour-coded bumpers with bright mesh inserts. The ultra-luxurious Turbo RT was built between 1997 and 1998, with just 252 cars produced prior to the introduction of the Arnage.

This lovely, long-wheelbase example was delivered new in the UK, supplied by Jack Barclay Ltd and first registered on 11/01/1999. It was tastefully specified with Dark Sapphire paintwork, Sandstone Hide seating, thick-over-thin Sandstone coach-lines and of course matching Portland Stone Wilton over-mats. Our vendor's father purchased this car to add to his collection as the best example he could find of the final model manufactured whilst the Bentley company was still under UK ownership, and since then it has been cared for with no expense spared, and maintained by specialists regarded as the best in the business. Today, this imposing machine presents very well with the paintwork retaining a deep gloss and the interior showing very little wear to speak of. The car fires into life with the first turn of the key and our vendor informs us that, with the extra comfort afforded by the longer cabin, there is no better way to travel the 350 miles round trip from their residence to Goodwood. On offer with a substantial history folder containing invoices, MOTs and handbooks, a Bentley trickle-charger, and a bespoke car cover.

**Catalogue Amendment**

Reviewing the file prior to the sale the vendor noted the MOT had expired. This was therefore renewed on Saturday 15th Feb 2020, the RT unsurprisingly passing with no advisories, and confirming just 400 miles since the last test.

  • The GT is a limited-edition variant of the V10 Audi R8 Coupe, only 333 examples built (33 UK cars)

  • 552bhp at 8,000rpm (up from 518bhp). Top speed of 199mph and a 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds

  • Lightweight seats, carbon body panels, thinner glass, a thinner exhaust, a magnesium engine subframe and shaved carpets make the GT 100kg lighter than its R8 V10 brethren

  • GT-specific; Alcantara, carbon rear wing, carbon winglets, big tailpipes and bespoke 19-inch wheels

  • Fitted with the Race Pack (£6,640). Half roll-cage, full harness belts, fire extinguisher and battery cut-out switches, just 12,800 miles and full service history

Genuine mid-engined exotics don't tend to wear German badges. Yes, there have been a few such anomalies down the years, but they rarely received the acclaim of their Italian counterparts. Here's the car that broke the mould, the Audi R8. Here was proof that you could buy a car with the charisma and presence of a Lamborghini and the engineering of, well, of an Audi and in V10 guise it has the performance to match. The Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car (designed by Frank Lamberty and Julian Hoenig), first appeared at the 2003 International Geneva Motor Show. The R8 road car was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30th September 2006. Initial models included the R8 4.2 FSI Coupe (with a V8 engine) and R8 5.2 FSI Coupe (with a V10 engine). At the time, 6-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx described the R8 as "the best handling road car today".

The car presented here is a 2011 Audi R8 GT, a limited-edition variant of the V10 R8 coupé. Only 333 examples were ever built, with just 33 allocated to the UK at a (basic) launch price of £142,585, and all were sold prior to release. Think of the GT as a Superleggera version of the R8, a car to take on the likes of GT3 RS and M3 GTS. Power is up to 552bhp at 8000rpm (up from 518bhp) all through electronic wizardry, giving a top speed of 199mph and a 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds. The only gearbox available for the GT is the R-Tronic automated manual. Audi says this is because it wanted to finesse only one gearbox for the 333 cars and the R-Tronic, globally, is more popular.

Unique GT features include new manual seats (which alone save 31.5kg), carbon body panels, thinner glass, a thinner exhaust, a magnesium engine subframe, and shaved carpets, all strive to make the GT 100kg lighter than its R8 V10 brethren - 1525kgs isn’t bad for a V10-engined supercar with four-wheel drive! The GT wears passive springs and dampers that lower the body by 10mm over the standard car; camber rates are upped, and the steering is even quicker, all to boost agility, with carbon-ceramic brakes and a limited-slip rear differential as standard. Other GT-specific additions include the use of Alcantara, a carbon rear wing, carbon winglets, two very big tailpipes, and bespoke 19-inch wheels.

This particular car has the additional Race Pack, costing an extra £6,640, which includes a half roll-cage, full harness belts, fire extinguisher and battery cut-out switches. With just two former keepers, a full and up-to-date servicing schedule with Audi, and coming from a private vendor, this really is a great example and believed to be one of just two GT models fitted with the Race Pack.

A very special R8, yet it remains a usable everyday car with sat-nav and air-con; don’t miss it!

2014 Bentley Flying Spur Mulliner*

Lot # 435 (Sale Order: 36 of 70)

  • Purchased by its first owner in July 2014 and enjoyed for 7,100 miles

  • Powered by a 6.0-litre W12 producing 625bhp/800N.m., 0-62 in 3.8 seconds and 207mph

  • 8-speed automatic gearbox with Quickshift, Block Shifting and a wheel-mounted paddle shift

  • Superbly finished in Silverlake Blue with Linen Hide and virtually unmarked throughout

  • Full Mulliner drivers specification and incredibly well optioned

  • Full service history, four new tyres and only 8,800 miles

Sharing its platform with the Continental GT, the second generation Bentley Flying Spur made its debut at the Geneva Show in March 2013. The 6.0-litre W12 engine now produced some 625bhp and an astonishing 800Nm of torque fed through an 8-speed automatic gearbox with Quickshift, Block Shifting and a wheel-mounted paddle shift. This all contributed towards a top speed in excess of 200mph for the first time in the model's history. A more driver-focused Mulliner version was also offered and the car received praise for its combination of exceptional handling for its size, combined with amazing performance and outstanding ride quality.

This car was sold new in July 2014 at a cost of £173,200 to its first owner who owned the car until early in 2019 and covered just 7,100 miles from new. The service history indicates that it has been serviced every year by a Bentley main agent, including 2019, when it was also fitted with four new tyres.

Finished in Silverlake Blue with Linen Hide, it is built to full Mulliner Drivers specification and also includes further factory options of 21” five-spoke polished wheels, comfort spec, steering column gear selection, storage case to centre console, electric glass tilt and slide sunroof, electrically adjustable rear seats with massage, single fine-line stripe in beige, contrast stitching to the over-mats and interior leather upholstery, deep pile over-mats front and rear, dual-tone three-spoke hide trimmed steering wheel, first aid kit and warning triangle, veneered picnic tables in the rear with vanity mirrors, Bentley battery charger, digital TV tuner, Mulliner rear-seat entertainment, rear view camera, remote control garage opener and a space-saving wheel.

Purchased by Silverstone Auctions Managing Director because of its outstanding condition and mileage early in 2019, the car has today covered just 8,800 miles in total (atoc). Having been kept indoors from new, it is naturally in outstanding order throughout and is offered at a very competitive guide price for a 'best of breed' example. Simply delightful and ready to use and enjoy.

2015 Volkswagen XL1

Lot # 436 (Sale Order: 37 of 70)

  •  Made from carbon fibre reinforced polymer and weighs just 795kg

  •  Two-seat, limited production. 800cc diesel-powered, plug-in hybrid

  •  Super-aerodynamic. Only needs 8bhp to achieve a steady 62mph and 313mpg

  •  One of only 200 built worldwide, one owner and less than 80 miles from new

  •  Left-hand drive. Finished in Oryx White Pearl with black cloth and red-centre Alcantara interior

  •  VAT qualifying vehicle

Revealed at the Qatar Motor Show in 2011, the VW XL1 not only looks amazingly futuristic but also features a whole raft of pioneering construction and drivetrain technology. Power comes from a meagre 800cc TDi two-cylinder, common-rail diesel engine which develops just 48bhp. It's linked to an electric motor producing a further 27bhp, resulting in a far more respectable 75bhp when working together. Bearing in mind the kerb weight is just 795kg, that's adequate to scoot it along quite nicely, we presume, as you click your way through the 7-speed DSG gearbox. It will happily run on the electric motor alone with zero emissions and, in this mode, has a range of 50km (31 miles) which should be more than enough to get you to your local supermarket for the weekly shop.

The XL1's suitably streamlined body is equally innovative. It's made from Volkswagen's patented carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) which is constructed using a process called resin transfer moulding (RTM). Elsewhere, magnesium wheels, ceramic brake discs and the use of aluminium for the dampers, steering and brake callipers help shave off that all-important weight. In fact, just 23.2% of the car is made out of either steel or iron. Meanwhile, friction optimised wheel bearings and driveshafts, as well as special low-rolling-resistance Michelin tyres, contribute to the low energy consumption and this technologically advanced masterpiece became a reality at VW's Osnabrück factory.

Fundamentally, the XL1 is a two-seater with gullwing doors and shrouded rear wheels being the key design features helping to keep the drag coefficient to a minimum. That's not to mention the natty use of small cameras (e-mirrors) instead of traditional wing mirrors to tell the driver what's going on outside. Remember Audi being boastful of its ground-breaking 100 model's 0.30 drag coefficient back in the early 1980s? Well, the VW XL1 virtually halves that with its figure of 0.186, making it the world's most aerodynamic road-going production car to date.

Having covered just 72 miles, at the time of cataloguing, the example we have on offer is, you could say, in ‘as new’ condition, and has been serviced regularly regardless of mileage. The Oryx White Pearl paintwork is flawless as are the red-centred, black Alcantara seats and ceramic black interior finishes. Single ownership from new, the car will be offered with a fresh MOT, all books, manuals, service history and charging station. A super addition to any car collection or you can enjoy turning heads whilst achieving 300+MPG on the commute to work.

1993 Ferrari 348 GT Competizione

Lot # 437 (Sale Order: 38 of 70)

  • Number 11 of only 50 individually numbered 348 GT Competizione homologation specials produced

  • Weight reduction of some 190 kg with comprehensive use of unique carbon fibre panels

  • Numerous unique performance enhancements complying with homologation requirements

  • Scarcer than any other Ferrari homologation special, including F40, F50 and 288 GTO

  • Presented in excellent order having been subject to a three-year restoration programme

The Ferrari 348 GTC (‘Competizione’) is the rarest modern Ferrari road model with a factory production run of 50 cars, of which only 8 were delivered in right-hand drive. Although this homologation special is the progenitor of all the subsequent lightweight V8 models (360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale), it is far more exclusive in terms of numbers and is one of the Homologation cars in the F40, F50 and 288 GTO set.

Weight reduction was the key to the performance of this ultimate 348 variant. Seats are F40 type Kevlar/carbon fibre racing buckets, doors, sills, front and rear bumpers are also composite and the wheels are unique 18” split-rim Speedline items, hiding the 15-inch F40 ventilated Brembo discs. Inside, the interior was stripped, the upholstery was replaced by lightweight fabric and the rear window replaced by Lexan. The total weight saving is often quoted as a remarkable 190kg over a standard 348. Complementing the improved power to weight ratio are more focused adjustable springs & dampers enabling a revised suspension set up and a rod–connected gearshift.

"The 348 GT Competizione car is so much more than just a car that has gone through a weight reduction program. Driving one proved how all these incremental changes had totally moved the game on from the base 348 in terms of dynamics and performance. The 348 GT Competizione drives like an old school, full of feel, Italian supercar. It is superb."

There were no changes to the 3.4-litre V8 so the GTC has the same 320bhp power output and in terms of straight-line speed it doesn't differ much from the regular 348.  However, the engine was always the best thing about the car and in the 200kg-lighter GTC, it spins up sweetly and loves to rev with that eagerness at the top end that is so utterly addictive. The crisp, directly connected gear change is much more satisfying and adds to the enjoyment of going up and down the box.

Cosmetic enhancements include the engraved, numbered-plaque steering wheel, external recessed Scuderia wing-shields and the evocative Competizione script on the engine cover.

#11/50 is in excellent condition having undergone a comprehensive, three-year, engine out, glass out, photo-documented restoration. It was re-bushed, the suspension components powder-coated, fresh cam belts fitted, and most nuts, bolts, clips and fixings replaced. All the lightweight panels were retained and the original colour combination of Rosso Corsa with a black interior and red seats was retained. It has covered a total of 23,000 km (14,500 miles) since first delivery. Invoices totalling a substantial amount for this extensive restoration are in the history file alongside the photographic record and the normal ownership documents.

This is a very rare Ferrari, more scarce than any other Ferrari homologation special, including the F40, F50 and 288 GTO and, additionally, its sheer agility, huge grip and intuitive steering response make the car a delight to drive. We welcome any inspection of this remarkable Competizione.

2006 Maserati GranSport V8

Lot # 438 (Sale Order: 39 of 70)

  • One owner from new and a warranted 25,432 miles indicated (atoc)

  • Superbly presented in Grigio Alfieri with silver Trofeo wheels and red calipers

  • 4244cc V8, 400bhp, 333lbs/ft of torque. 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and 180mph

  • Classic Maserati interior in Nero with Midnight Blue dial faces and that famous clock

  • Immaculate engine bay. Recently serviced. Full service history

  • Supplied with a UK V5c, its Maserati book pack and a current MOT

Launched at the 2004 Geneva Motorshow, the GranSport was a more focused version of its predecessor, the Maserati Coupe. It featured the same delectably sonorous 4244cc V8 engine, however, a new exhaust system, improved intake manifolds, and bigger valves squeezed an extra 10bhp to bring it up to a neat, even 400bhp supported by 333lbs/ft of torque. 0-62mph occupied around 4.9 seconds and the revised aerodynamics enabled a top speed of 180mph. The six-speed paddle-shift system was also upgraded and re-calibrated resulting in faster, crisper changes and the suspension was lowered by 10mm and the geometry tweaked. Chrome mesh grilles were added to the front and rear bumpers and 19" Trofeo wheels gave the car a much more purposeful look. The interior benefited from sports seats, a slimmer centre console, carbon fibre details and a new steering wheel.

Becoming increasingly tricky to find with low use, this particular 2006 Maserati GranSport V8 was delivered through H.R.Owen, London to its first and only owner. Very tastefully specified and finished in Grigio Alfieri (metallic grey) with a Nero (black) leather interior. The original service book accompanies the car and shows three main dealer services at 4,137 miles, 13,280 miles, and 18,417 miles. Most recently, the car has been the recipient of another service at a Ferrari main dealer and it will arrive at the sale with a current MOT. Supplied with a UK V5c and its book pack, this single-owner car has covered a mere 25,432 miles at the time of cataloguing and has to be one of the best of its type currently available on the market.

A high performance, luxurious ‘Grand Tourer’ tastefully presented, sensibly guided, in fine order and serviced up-to-date. All that is left is to enjoy the note of that V8 on route to wherever.

1967 Ford Mustang GT Fastback 347 CID

Lot # 439 (Sale Order: 40 of 70)

The accelerator pedal linkage has loosened and is impeding revving of the engine, this will be rectified at vendor's expense post auction

  • A desirable GT Fastback subject of a recent full, chassis-off, restoration

  • Built and re-engineered by renowned specialists Livernois Motorsports of Michigan

  • Fitted with a high-performance 5,680cc Ford 347 CID V8 crated engine and a C6 auto gearbox

  • Brembo brakes, AirPod adjustable suspension technology, power steering, air conditioning, high-spec audio system

  • Little use since restoration, now UK-registered and ready to rumble!

The original Mustang was exactly the right car at the right time and consequently this ‘sports car for the masses’ sold a million in less than two years. The secret of the Mustang's success was a broad appeal that extended beyond the target market thanks to a great value-for-money package combining sporty looks, decent economy and brisk performance. Available as a Notchback Coupe, Convertible or, from 1965, as Fastback Coupe and the array of trim and engine options meant that there was a ‘Stang' to satisfy everyone. The fastback Coupe is an effortlessly cool shape and is the Mustang profile that people default to in their mind’s eye. Mustangs could be ordered in specifications ranging from six-cylinder economy to V8-powered luxury, whilst customers could choose from an extensive range of factory options with the result that seldom are two Mustangs identical. A natural progression from customers using the options list to create something totally bespoke was for automotive tuners and customisers to go even further and offer a huge range of further enhancements to make your individual Mustang even more individual.

This sparkling silver 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback is no ordinary example. Starting life as a much sought-after GT Fastback, it has benefitted from the most thorough professional restoration/enhancement program carried out just 2,000 miles ago in the US by specialists 'Livernois Motorsports' of Michigan who, in the past, have been entrusted to prepare a car for Paul Teutul Sr. of Orange County Choppers, a man whose insistence on perfection is legendary.

It's fitted with a mighty 347 Ci, ‘crated’ (rebuilt/enhanced/tested by specialists) V8 engine, which is at the heart of this impressive machine. To keep everything in balance are Brembo brakes, AirPod adjustable suspension, power steering and a full geometry reset, all carried out to an extremely high standard. In terms of creature comforts, it's fitted with air conditioning and a very expensive and impressive ICE system, totally in keeping with such a statement car. This is not one for the shy and retiring and represents a lot of car (and fun!) for what will be a very tempting guide.

1965 Jaguar E-Type SI 4.2 OTS

Lot # 440 (Sale Order: 41 of 70)

  • A Series 1, 4.2 E-Type OTS re-engineered by Eagle E-Types with numerous upgrades

  • Superbly presented in a deep shade of Sapphire Blue with unmarked grey leather

  • Minimal use since rebuild and superbly maintained, in-house by Eagle from 2001-2015

  • Detailed maintenance and service records are on file along with its Jaguar Heritage Certificate, handbook, current V5c, old MOT certificates and its current MOT

  • A delightful car sensibly upgraded by a company renowned globally for their expertise and unparalleled attention to detail

This 1965 Series I 4.2 open-two-seater E-Type was originally delivered in left-hand drive to Jaguar cars, New York, USA. It was repatriated in the 1990's and subsequently completely restored and refinished by XK Engineering. A photographic account of the initial restoration can be discovered within the history folder. Literally just after the initial restoration was completed, this E-Type was supplied to a customer through Eagle in November 1999.

One of the advantages of purchasing an E-Type from Eagle’s showrooms is the exclusive access to the options offered when a full Eagle E-Type restoration is commissioned from them at a later date, so the decision was made to update this E-Type with a large selection of upgrades from Eagle’s extensive range, to include both Sport and SuperSport options to brakes, suspension, cooling and electrical systems. Some further options were also added in 2003.

The car's owner lived in Hong Kong, keeping the Jaguar in the UK to use when he was over here and, as this became less frequent, Eagle sold the car to its next owner in October 2005. He was to keep it for the following nine years and was so smitten by Eagle’s work that he commissioned a full Eagle E-Type and sold this car as his new Eagle was nearing completion.

Our vendor purchased this example in 2014 directly from Eagle who had taken the opportunity prior to the sale to refresh the engine as part of their pre-sale preparations, especially as Eagle had touched neither the body nor the drivetrain and running gear.

Encapsulating the best of both worlds, this remarkable car retains the classic, meltingly beautiful looks of the early E-Type Roadsters with enhanced performance matching that of most modern sports cars, improved driveability, and the confidence-inspiring reliability that results from intelligent engineering, diligently applied.

Years of research and development including many man-hours of labour have been invested into this beautiful classic Jaguar, allowing its owner a thrilling and safe driving experience blending modern technology with classic engineering. Offered with the aforementioned detailed history folder, its Jaguar Heritage Certificate, E-Type handbook, Eagle service record, current V5c, old MOT Certificates, and the car's current MOT.

1974 Ford Escort RS2000 Mk I

Lot # 441 (Sale Order: 42 of 70)

  • This is a genuine RS2000 first registered on 08/04/1974

  • Offered from the stable of rock legend and Jamiroquai frontman, Jason Kay

  • Well restored with a host of sensible upgrades

  • Recently rebuilt 2.1 Pinto with alloy sump, Webers, phase-3 fast-road cam and a ported head

  • 43,246 miles indicated (atoc), mechanically excellent and superbly presented

The Escort RS2000 was the last car to be introduced to Ford's 'Advanced Vehicle' range in June of 1973 and dovetailed nicely with its performance almost comparable to the more complex RS1600, but with the reliability and ease of maintenance of the Mexico. The car used the same Type 49 bodyshell as the Mexico and RS1600, however, there was a new engine in use at Ford, the 2-litre overhead cam, 100bhp, 'Pinto' design, which seemed, on paper, ideal for the RS. Ford then had the major problem of persuading the, less than slender, Pinto engine to fit into the engine bay, which was something it had never been designed to do. The only way of achieving this was by discarding the engine-driven cooling fan and replacing it with a thermostatically controlled Kenlowe unit. The most appropriate gearbox was the German 'E-box', which was totally different to the one fitted to the RS1600, and the final drive was 3.54:1. The car was launched in England on 11/11/1973 priced at £1,586.

Offered from the amazing and varied stable of rock legend and Jamiroquai frontman, Jason Kay, this car was initially registered on 08/04/1974, and is an original Escort RS2000 supplied with a host of paperwork together with a V5c registration document and a current MOT test certificate.  Finished in the instantly recognisable colours of Diamond White with blue stripes, this Escort has benefited from restoration and a host of upgrades including a strengthened bodyshell with a roll cage, jacking points for jack stands and steel bubble arches.  Work includes a recently rebuilt 2.1 Pinto engine with alloy sump, Weber carburettors, Newland phase-three fast-road camshaft, ported cylinder head and a heat-wrapped, four branch exhaust manifold. Said to produce 165bhp, the car has a five-speed quick shift gearbox and quick steering rack.  Further spec includes Cobra bucket seats with four-point Sabelt harnesses, front discs, anti-roll bar and anti-dive conversion, and a rear brake disc conversion using Sierra Cosworth brake calipers. More recently in January 2020, the car was fitted with new 4 link bushes and rose joints, as well as a rolling road set-up with carburettor tuning.

With an indicated 43,246 miles at the time of cataloguing, superbly presented, and the cachet of celebrity ownership, this little RS is offered turn-key and ready to go. In the mid-seventies, this would have been the car to be seen in and, in 2020, we think it has returned to that status.

1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS Convertible

Lot # 442 (Sale Order: 43 of 70)

  • The 1968 RS version of the manual Camaro SS convertible is among the rarest of examples

  • 5.4-litre (396ci) V8 engine coupled to a Hurst Shifter manual transmission

  • Sourced directly from the US in 2015 to join our vendor’s extensive UK-based collection

  • The RS version of the SS featured distinctive options such as retractable headlight covers

  • UK-registered on the 29/09/2015, the car is ready for less than subtle summer motoring

Chevrolet may have been caught off guard by Ford’s all-new Mustang in 1964, but by 1967 it had its own highly successful pony car in the Camaro. Inspired by the Super Nova show car displayed at the 1964 New York Auto Show, the Camaro featured the clean flowing lines and rounded contours that characterised Chevrolet designs of the mid-60s. The Camaro was in fact one of the purest designs ever issued by Chevrolet, embodying everything designer Bill Mitchell believed should constitute a proper sporting automobile; a clean attractive shape uncluttered by details, a high-performance drivetrain, bucket seats with a floor-mounted shifter and seating for four.

That Chevrolet would offer a Super Sport package for the Camaro was a foregone conclusion, as was the availability of big-block power. When the SS396 debuted in late 1966, its performance was hampered by the mono-leaf rear springs carried over from the Chevrolet Nova, but that was solved in 1968 with the introduction of multi-leaf rear springs and staggered shocks that transferred all the Camaro’s power to the ground. The RS was an appearance package with special grille treatment that included hidden and different headlamps from the standard Camaros, special RS badging and special chrome and blackout trim all adding some extra style to go along with the extra power of the SS.

Our vendor, a collector of American motoring icons from the 1930's through to the 1960's, purchased this left-hand-drive example directly in the United States, initially for his Bahama-based collection. The car was twice invited to the Boca Raton Concours, but with UK-based business interests taking up his time, the offers were regretfully declined. UK-registered in 2015 the car has been enjoyed in dry weather only, with top-down spins along the boulevards of Poole and Sandbanks adding a few miles to the odometer that now shows, at the time of cataloguing, some 59,800 miles.

1960 Chevrolet Corvette C1

Lot # 443 (Sale Order: 44 of 70)

Contrary to previous listings this car will require UK registration by the buyer subject to a valid MOT.

  • Built in 1960, sourced directly in the United States in 2015 with UK registration pending

  • Finished in Ermine White with matching hardtop, white soft top and red interior

  • Described as in show condition. Two-time winner of Cherry’s Jubilee Event, Monterey

  • Fitted with a 383ci NASCAR stroker engine mated to a Jerico 4-speed transmission

  • Wildwood discs, Carrera coil-over shocks and ceramic coated headers

  • A stunning and truly unique show-winning car from a carefully curated collection

In the early 1950's, a team of GM engineers, headed up by Harley Earl, went to work trying to create a car that had the appeal to compete with European sports cars. The resulting creation, dubbed the Corvette 'Dream Car', debuted at the GM Motorama Show held at the stylish Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. At the conclusion of Motorama's US tour, GM stated that over four million people had seen the car with the majority expressing a desire to get behind the wheel of the new Corvette. The first true American sports car was born.

Intended as competition for the T-Series MG, the Corvette cost way above the target figure, ending up in Jaguar XK120 territory but with decidedly less performance. Sales were sluggish initially and the model came close to being axed, surviving thanks to Chevrolet's need to compete with Ford's Thunderbird. A V8 engine for 1955 and a radical restyle for 1956 consolidated the Corvette's position in the market, the model going on to become the world's best-selling and longest-lived sports car.

This lovely Corvette was built in 1960 and sourced directly in the United States in 2015 with UK registration pending with the DVLA. It is finished in Ermine White with a matching hardtop, white soft top and red interior. It's described as being in “show condition” and is a two-time winner of Cherry’s Jubilee Event, Monterey. We believe the mileage of some 14,000 miles at the time of cataloguing may be due to “zeroing” of the odometer at the time of the restoration. Some would argue the car is a resto-mod with the fitment of the 383 NASCAR stroker engine which is mated to a Jerico 4-speed transmission. It is also fitted with Wildwood discs, Carrera adjustable coil-over shocks and ceramic coated headers.

Beautifully presented and totally evocative of the early Sixties, this is a stunning and truly unique show-winning car from a carefully curated collection.

**Catalogue Amendment**

Contrary to previous listings this car will require UK registration by the buyer subject to a valid MOT.

1957 Jaguar XK140 SE Roadster

Lot # 444 (Sale Order: 45 of 70)

  • Dispatched from Browns Lane in 1957 to Jaguar Cars New York, returning 60 years later

  • A left-hand drive Special Equipment with matching numbers as confirmed by Jaguar

  • Total, ground-up restoration in the UK including a complete engine rebuild

  • Superbly finished in Ice Blue Metallic over Harbour Grey leather and Charcoal carpets

  • The engine bay is a work of art. Chrome wire wheels and chrome luggage rack

  • The owner's file contains a period XK140 spares catalogue, current UK V5c, old MOT certificates, copies from the Jaguar archives and detailed restoration invoices

Jaguar Cars launched the XK140 at the London Motor Show in October 1954 with a raft of improvements over its predecessor, the landmark XK 120. The styling was enhanced by a revised grille and larger bumpers along with new rear lights, which now incorporated the indicators. The handling was improved by rack and pinion steering and telescopic dampers and the interior space was enlarged to allow the addition of occasional rear seats.

The power unit remained Jaguar's well-tried, 3.4-litre, twin-cam six, which now produced 190bhp in standard trim thanks to higher-lift camshafts and revised porting. To ensure reliability, steel bearing caps replaced the previous cast-iron type. A close-ratio gearbox enabled better use to be made of the increased performance whilst a Laycock de Normanville overdrive became an option for the first time. Special Equipment (SE) XK140s came with wire wheels and Lucas fog lamps and could be ordered with an engine developing 210bhp courtesy of the 'C'-type cylinder head.

Dispatched from Browns Lane in January 1957, this left-hand-drive XK140 Roadster equipped to ‘SE’ specification was delivered new to Jaguar Cars New York. Some 60 years later, the XK made the return journey and upon arrival in the UK, the decision was made to set about a complete, ground-up, restoration. Pleasingly, its original engine remained in place and this was sent to a Jaguar specialist to be stripped, inspected and fully rebuilt, and a detailed invoice within the history folder shows a cost including ancillaries of over £16,000. In the meantime, the bodywork was taken back to bare metal and completely refinished in a beautiful shade of light metallic blue. All mechanical components were either restored or replaced and the full rolling chassis prepared to be reunited with the rebuilt engine. The interior was beautifully re-trimmed in grey leather and new carpets fitted.

This sparkling XK now presents in showroom condition and is described as running and driving very well as you might expect. It's accompanied by the owner's file which contains a period XK140 spares catalogue, current V5c, old MOT Certificates, copies from the Jaguar archives and detailed restoration invoices.

Offered at a very sensible guide (the cost of restoration alone exceeds the lower estimate) this is an opportunity to own a very stylish, sought after and collectable Jaguar from a point in time when the world was very different. All that is left to do is to brim the tank, fill the picnic basket and set off on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster

Lot # 445 (Sale Order: 46 of 70)

  • A beautifully presented left-hand drive 190SL originally delivered to the dry state of California

  • A thorough inspection and subsequent remedial works carried out by marque specialist, John Haynes in June 2019

  • Complete new brake system, fuel and ignition systems renewed including correct Solex carbs

  • Accompanied by a desirable hard top in matching Silver Grey Metallic

  • Drives and performs exceedingly well reflecting recent expenditure of circa £30,000

This beautiful Silver Grey, left-hand drive manual 190SL was manufactured in 1960, and originally delivered to the dry state of California. At some point, date unknown, it returned to Europe providing further joy and pleasure to its new custodian who resided in sunny Cyprus. During late 2014, the Mercedes arrived in the UK ready for the next chapter of its life, and a thorough restoration was commissioned. The work was entrusted to Classic & Iconic Cars Ltd who were requested to conduct an appraisal of the amount of work required and instructed to complete the work which they did at significant cost. Cosmetically the body was completely stripped, prepared, and carefully repainted in the beautiful classic silver grey finish it now wears. The engine was removed and subjected to an extensive rebuild using new pistons, bearings, valves and guides, and was professionally balanced before reassembly. Whilst the engine was away, attention was focused on the brakes, suspension, and a new exhaust system and new tyres were fitted. It was also decided to fit Weber 40DCOE carburettors to provide smoother running and turn-key performance. Subsequently, once the car was reassembled, it was sent to be professionally set up on a rolling road.

The car was offered by Silverstone Auctions and purchased by our vendor in May 2018 and, although initially very pleased, he felt that he wished to take it a bit further and sent it to marque specialist John Haynes to be assessed and refreshed. The brake system was completely overhauled with new wheel cylinders, shoes, pipes, hoses, fluid, cables, drums skimmed, handbrake etc. The fuel system was also overhauled – new fuel tank, correct Solex 44PHH carburettors fitted, manifold, fuel pump, air filter housing & intake tubes etc. The ignition benefitted from a new distributor, coil, HT leads, and spark plugs. The account for this work was dated June 2019 and amounted to £28,514 (copy invoice in file).

The SL still looks spectacular with its gleaming Silver Grey coachwork set off by the exceptional red leather interior, and that classic SL dashboard with its cream Bakelite steering wheel but now benefits from that confidence-inspiring mechanical refresh. Viewing of the history file is recommended where copies of receipts and invoices are available displaying the full extent of work completed along with the car's accompanying V5c and MOT Certificate. If you are seriously seeking “the right”  190SL, please take the time to appreciate 606 UYR, and you might find that this immaculate, well-travelled little Mercedes is exactly what you had in mind.

1976 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina

Lot # 446 (Sale Order: 47 of 70)

  • Very rare. Just 154 Vetroresina (Italian for fibreglass) examples left the factory in RHD destined for the UK

  • These early 308s are much sought-after being lighter in weight and equipped with carburettors and dry-sump lubrication

  • RHD/UK-supplied, originally in rare Blu Dino Metallizzato, body number 84, matching numbers

  • Coming from a private vendor and 20-years diligent ownership

  • Meticulous mechanical upkeep since new, including a complete engine rebuild at 53,000 miles and a total ground-up photographic restoration in 2001

  • Extensive history, numerous folders of invoices totalling approx. £70,000, all MOTs verifying mileage, full maintenance records from day one, complete original book-pack, build sheets and tool roll

  • An extremely healthy 308 that drives and performs quite superbly; recently fully cambelt serviced

Introduced at the Paris Salon in 1975, the stunningly beautiful 308 GTB - Ferrari's second V8-engined road car - marked a welcome return to Pininfarina styling following the Bertone-designed Dino 308 GT4. Badged as a 'proper' Ferrari rather than a Dino, the newcomer had changed little mechanically apart from a reduction in wheelbase, whilst retaining its predecessor's underpinnings and transversely mounted quad-cam 3.0-litre V8 engine, which now featured dry-sump lubrication. In road tune, this superbly engineered power unit produced 255bhp, an output good enough to propel the aerodynamically efficient 308 to a top speed of 150mph (240km/h). Produced initially with glass-fibre (Vetroresina) bodywork - the first time this material had been used for a production Ferrari - the Scaglietti-built 308 GTB used steel after April 1977. The change brought with it a considerable weight penalty (around 80kg) and consequent reduction in performance, as well as increased susceptibility to corrosion. Naturally, anyone wanting to race a 308 GTB started out with the Vetroresina version if they could.

The car presented here is a 1976 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina, a right-hand drive/UK-supplied matching numbers car, one of just 154 examples that left the factory in this configuration destined for the UK (only 712 Vetroresina 308 GTB coupés in total were ever produced).

This car must be one of the most well maintained and best driving examples out there, with full maintenance records from day one. It was also the recipient of a total ground-up photographic restoration in 2001. The car has been used as intended, but diligently maintained, serviced and restored even when not required, with numerous accompanying folders of invoices totalling approx. £70,000. The engine was refreshed at 40,000 miles, a complete engine rebuild carried out at 53,000 miles (with camshaft upgrade) and again refreshed at 70,000 miles, with hardened valves and seats installed in 2009, all by renowned Ferrari specialists. It has also benefitted from new springs and dampers, its original air conditioning upgraded with modern internals, a new flywheel, clutch, clutch shaft, shaft gear and associated bearings all replaced in the last 1,000 miles. It has just had a full cam-belt service, a distributor rebuild and a rolling road tune-up, and now displays a fully verifiable 94,000 miles (atoc).

Our private vendor has enjoyed his Vetroresina for 20 years and has lavished much time and money on keeping it at its best but feels now the time has come to say goodbye. Retaining irreplaceable original items including two sets of keys, its complete book-pack, tool-roll, magnetic maintenance light and build sheets, this really is the complete classic Ferrari package.

2019 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'

Lot # 447 (Sale Order: 48 of 70)

  • One of just 50 limited edition 2019 DBS Superleggeras produced by Aston Martin

  • The model marks the 50th Anniversary of the release of On Her Majesty's Secret Service

  • Finished in Olive Green, the same colour as James Bond's original 1969 Aston Martin DBS

  • Brand new with delivery mileage of just 45 miles. Never been driven by the owner

  • 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine that propels the car from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds

  • The Aston Martin manufacturer's warranties naturally transfer to the new owner

  • An unmissable opportunity to purchase a modern supercar respectfully paying its dues to the James Bond legacy

In 1969, the world was introduced to a new James Bond and in the opening credits of ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, with the character’s face in shadow, it is the Olive Green Aston Martin DBS that takes centre stage. Replacing Sean Connery was no mean feat and the film’s producers might have given George Lazenby a Walther PPK and a dinner jacket but it is the Aston Martin that provides the continuity of 007’s new transition. With the famous theme song blaring and twin exhausts burbling the DBS took the corners of the Estoril coast road like the grand tourer it truly is.

Roger Moore might have driven the odd Lotus but James Bond belongs in an Aston. In April 2020, the new Bond film ‘No Time to Die’ will be released and has no fewer than four Astons in it, two modern models, the rebuilt DB5 and, most notably, a welcome return to the screen of the V8 Vantage Coupe, last seen falling foul of its self-destruct button in ‘The Living Daylights’.

The long partnership between Aston Martin Lagonda and the James Bond franchise has ensured that, not only is Britain’s motoring heritage promoted around the world on the big screen, but also the cutting-edge design and engineering of modern examples such as the Vanquish, DBS and the one-off DB10.

As a company proud of its heritage and long associations, it was announced in May 2019 that a limited run of just 50 DBS Superleggera 'On Her Majesty’s Secret Service' special editions will be produced to mark the 50-year anniversary of the release of the film. This is no mere homage but a fully up to date re-working, a marvel of design and engineering. The rakish body with its sculpted flanks is naturally finished in Olive Green, which provides an intriguing mix of understatement, style and menace, much like Mr Bond himself.

The car boasts a 5.2-litre, twin-turbo V12 engine that is set low and as far back in the chassis as possible to optimise the centre-of-gravity and weight distribution and this remarkable power unit will propel it from 0 to 62mph in a brisk 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 211mph. Detailed tuning of the V12 together with an exhaust strategy with active valves and quad tailpipes ensures that the car has a commanding and powerful sound, particularly in the more aggressive dynamic modes, whilst retaining a level of refinement and civility that compliments its role as the consummate Super GT.

Details include a carbon fibre splitter, aero blade, unique diamond-turned and forged wheels and a bespoke metal grille featuring six bright horizontal vanes, to replicate the distinctive front of the original 1969 DBS. The exterior paint surface is enhanced by body-coloured cant rails and roof, commemorative “OHMSS” side-strakes and unique touches throughout. The interior is trimmed in pure black leather, accented by grey-blend Alcantara, as in the original 1969 DBS. The cockpit is accented in red, inspired by the red-trimmed glovebox in the original car, which held 007’s telescopic-sight rifle.

In May 2019, our vendor, an international businessman and Aston enthusiast bought the car as a planned retirement gift to himself. Nevertheless, at 81 he has not retired and neither has he driven the car, in his own words “Once I drove the car, I know that I wouldn’t want to part with it. The new owner will have a car that is absolutely brand new”. The car was first registered on the 18/12/2019, 50 years to the day since the release of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

1993 Honda NSX

Lot # 448 (Sale Order: 49 of 70)

  • First delivered to Japan in right-hand drive with the five-speed manual transmission

  • This desirable NA1 first series was registered in the UK on 14/11/2003

  • Subsequently owned by Le Mans 24-Hour veteran Simon Phillips and by our vendor since 2014

  • The odometer reading shows a mileage equivalent of some 93,000 miles (atoc)

  • Offered with a comprehensive history file, two keys and cherished D16 NSX registration

The star-studded history of the NSX needs no further explanation, with memories of Senna and later of Gran Turismo digital dominance firmly in the hearts and minds of all petrolheads. Today, a correctly specified car in the right condition continues to offer a very special driving experience. This particular example is a desirable first series NA1 car, finished in Formula Red coachwork with a black roof and black leather interior. Delivered new to Japan and specified with 5-speed manual transmission rather than the buzz-kill automatic unit, this right-hand drive example was imported to the UK in November 2003 and was subsequently owned by Le Mans 24-Hour Veteran and BRDC member Simon Phillips.

Owned by our vendor since 2014, this NSX has benefited from the ideal combination of regular maintenance and use. The cambelt, brake discs and pads were replaced in 2015 at some 80,000 miles and new front brake calipers have since been fitted alongside new Bilstein front dampers. Last serviced in 2018, the car has been correctly stored since. Subtle BOSE door speakers and modern head unit now adorn the interior, which presents as well as the rest of the car.

Now showing just over 93,000 miles (or 151,000km) from new at the time of cataloguing, this NSX is a truly usable modern classic with near-mythical dynamics and illustrious history – and a sports exhaust system, too. Offered to auction with a comprehensive history file, book packs, tool kit, two keys and the cherished D16 NSX registration.

1987 Porsche 928 S4 by Strosek

Lot # 449 (Sale Order: 50 of 70)

  • Built in Stuttgart in 1987 and fitted with very rare upgrades by Strosek Auto Design

  • The Strosek Version 1 featured 17″ OZ Futura wheels and a sports exhaust

  • Delightfully finished in Cassis Red Metallic with a Magenta leather and cloth interior

  • Previously registered in Monaco and the requisite NOVA application is in process (atoc)

  • The odometer reading shows some 170,000km or 105,000 miles (atoc)

  • Delightful 1980s design enhanced by stylish upgrades from a noted designer

The 928 was launched to a fanfare and surprised many by being named European Car of the Year. Porsche's intended replacement for the 911 had an all-alloy V8 which was attached to a rear-mounted gearbox, and the galvanised body had aluminium doors and bonnet, plus body-coloured plastic bumpers, all pretty radical for its time.

It was around 1984 when Vittorio Strosek unveiled his vision for Porsche 928. This modified 928 was Strosek’s first project for his own company, Strosek Auto Design although he had worked in this field before contributing design details for EVEX (Porsche) and Willy König from Koenig-Specials.

Vittorio’s choice of the Porsche 928 was due to the fact that most tuners focused on the Porsche 911/930 and left the 928 for what it was, which was odd because in the 1980s the 928 was actually Porsche’s top model. The initial Strosek program for the Porsche 928 consisted of a series of spoilers, bumpers and other cosmetics divided into three stages, Versions l, ll and lll. 'Version l' retained the normal width of the 928 but did have heavily modified bumpers, spoilers and a large rear wing.

This automatic example was built in 1987 and is fitted with a ‘Version l’ Strosek kit featuring 17″ OZ Futura wheels and a glorious sounding Strosek sports exhaust system. Latterly registered in Monaco, a NOVA application is in process, and the odometer shows some 170,000km (105,000 miles) at the time of cataloguing. Offered with a document folder including book pack, numerous invoices and related documents in both French and German. It's distinctively finished in Cassis Red Metallic (80D) with an immaculate Magenta leather and cloth interior and all that's missing is a pinstripe Armani suit and Soft Cell synth-pop on the stereo.
