1971 Land Rover 109 Lwb Series Iia

Lot # 525 (Sale Order: 26 of 53)

The Series IIA is considered by many to be the most hardy Series model ever constructed. It's also the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the general public's perception of the brand due to its many appearances in popular films and television documentaries set in Africa throughout the 1960s, such as Born Free.In February 1968, just a few months after its manufacturer had been subsumed into the Leyland Motor Corporation, the Land Rover celebrated its twentieth birthday, with total production just short of 600,000, of which more than 70% had been exported. In 1967, a 2.6-litre, six cylinder petrol engine was introduced for the long-wheelbase models which also, finally, got to benefit from servo-assisted brakes. 811 of these were NADA (or North American Dollar Area) trucks, which were the only long-wheelbase models made for the American and Canadian markets.Certainly, it was whilst the Series IIA was in production that sales of utility Land Rovers reached their peak, and in 1969/70 sales of over 60,000 Land Rovers a year were recorded. (For comparison, the sales of the Defender since the 90s have been around the 25,000 level.) Record sales do not automatically confer domination of the market but the Land Rover came to dominate the World simply because it was the best. In the 1960s the Land Rover represented almost 90% of the Australian 4×4 market and this level of success was repeated in other areas such as Africa and the Middle East.Good examples of Series IIs and IIAs are now beginning to achieve classic status, and are starting to appreciate in value, although many are still in daily use.The first registered owners of the car on offer today, were the infamous Bucharest Serviciul de Telecomunicati (UM 0731) (Public Order and Safety) and it then went on to be used for "Hunting" by the Communist Romanian Secret Service during the Ceausescu dictatorship. This versatile vehicle with a thought provoking history was first registered in 1971 and is presented in light grey, with a 4 speed manual gearbox, 2.6 in-line 6 cylinder petrol engine and has only 899 km on the clock. Ideal for use as a work horse around the farm and stables, as a second or third family vehicle or as a collector's piece, and is certainly an exciting prospect.

1974 Jaguar E-type Series Iii V12 Manual

Lot # 526 (Sale Order: 27 of 53)

Jaguar introduced the E-Type in March 1961 to worldwide acclaim. Early forays into motor sport were rewarded in May of that year when Graham Hill celebrated the type's first win at Oulton Park. Success on the track was reflected on the road and was to continue right up to 1974, with over 70,000 E-Types eventually produced in Coventry. From 1961, the E-Type evolved and improved in its lifecycle from the original Series 1 Coupés and Roadsters, through the Series 2 cars of the late 1960s until finally the Series 3 arrived in late 1971, this 5.3 V12 being only available as a convertible or a '2+2'. Approximately 7,990 Series 3 convertibles were sold worldwide before production ceased.Offered here is a fabulous Series 3 Roadster finished in Gunmetal Grey with an Ox Blood red leather interior. The car was purchased by our vendor in 2013, and sent, almost immediately, to respected Jaguar specialists Hilton & Moss in Hertfordshire, where it was to remain for the next year. Their brief was to create a good looking car that would be sufficiently reliable to be used every day. The result was sensational. The refurbishment is well documented with bills totalling more than £24,000. The work carried out is too extensive to list here, but included stripping and refurbishing the gearbox, fitting new brakes, refurbishing the chrome wire wheels, respraying and adjusting the bodywork to give excellent panels gaps, fitting a new windscreen, carpets, hood and repairing the hood frame. To ensure reliability and performance, the engine was fettled, new ancillaries fitted and then serviced. A new wood-rimmed Mota-Lita steering wheel enhances the look of the interior, and the original leather steering wheel is included in the sale. This stunning looking car presents the opportunity to own a legendary British classic with which you can pop to the shops in the morning and display at a local show in the afternoon.

1965 Mercedes-benz 230 Sl Pagoda

Lot # 527 (Sale Order: 28 of 53)

Introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show and produced until 1971, the 230SL was based on the W111 sedan platform, with a reduced wheelbase, recirculating ball steering, double wishbone front suspension and an independent single-joint, low-pivot swing rear axle with a transverse compensator spring. Offered with a 4-speed manual transmission, or an optional, very responsive fluid coupled 4-speed automatic transmission, the former was the more popular choice in Europe.Offered here is a right-hand drive, 4-speed manual, 1965 230SL Pagoda finished in gold with a black interior and supplied with a black hardtop in nice condition. According to some documents contained within the history file, the bodywork was restored around 1987 - 1988, when new wings and sills were fitted, along with an engine overhaul, however, we cannot confirm who carried out this work.In April 1989, at which time the mileage was recorded as 61,340, the car was sold by Christies to a Mr and Mrs Dieter Kiel of Plymouth. During their ownership, the car was maintained fastidiously by Daley Motors of Plymouth, with every receipt & MoT documented, along with parts invoices from Mercedes-Benz. The couple were to own ‘DYX 790C' for 15 years, before selling the car in 2004, to a Mr Maurice Webb, who kept it for a further 4 years before himself selling to the next owner, a Mr S. McInerney. The latter named keeper took ownership of this 230SL until 2014 when our vendor acquired the car.Upon purchase, our vendor sent the car to classic Mercedes-Benz specialists, Roger Edwards Motors of Amersham, for fine tuning, and in the winter of 2014 spent £3,518 having the rear axle removed & reassembled with a new centre bush, new top mounts, replacement rubber boots all round, new shock absorbers and a new alternator fitted. A new opportunity overseas for our vendor, has meant that it is now time to pass on the baton of ownership to the next person for this very useable little "Pagoda". Accompanied by a nice history file, a UK V5C and MoT, this car, whilst not a concours contender, is presentable and can be enjoyed for many years to come.

1967 Jaguar Mk.Ii 3.4 / 340 Auto

Lot # 528 (Sale Order: 29 of 53)

The Jaguar Mk.II saloon was voted the car of the year when launched in 1959. With three engine options of 2.4, 3.4 and 3.8 (the 3.8 being the fastest saloon in the world at the time), it would form the mainstay of Jaguar's saloon production until 1967. It would also claim notoriety with both the police force and the villains of the day due to its performance and reliability. On track, the car enjoyed similar success in the early days of British Saloon Car racing, being driven by legends such as Graham Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart, cementing its place in history. In September 1967 the 2.4 and 3.4 litre Mark II cars were rebadged as the 240 and 340 respectively. These were interim models until the introduction of the XJ6 in September 1968.Engine output of the 340 with its straight-port type cylinder head and twin HS6 SU carburetors with a new inlet manifold was now quoted at 210bhp, whilst the automatic transmission was upgraded to a Borg-Warner 35 dual drive range.  The economies of the new 340 models came at a cost sadly, as the leather upholstery was replaced by Ambla leather-like material and tufted carpet was used on the floor, although both had been introduced on the Mk.II a year earlier. This, matching numbers, automatic gearbox, Jaguar 340 was manufactured on the 7th of September, 1967 and is an imposing and handsome car offered in the timeless colours of British Racing Green with a plush black interior. It benefits from being the recipient of extensive maintenance and upgrades during its life, including a rebuilt engine and cylinder head in 2012 by Coventry Boring & Metalling Co., a Graham Whitehouse rebuilt gearbox in 2003, a power steering conversion, stainless steel exhaust and low wear polyurethane suspension bushes for better handling. This car comes from the home of a skilled engineer, who is an avid Jaguar collector, and has been set up to be extremely reliable and when required a fantastic grand tourer, as proven by a handful of problem free long distance trips with his family including the Le Mans classic.Accompanying the car is more than 30 years of comprehensive history, including tax discs and MoT's tracking the life of this Jaguar through its six owners. Furthermore, this car retains its original tool kit and is fitted with a fully functioning tow bar. As a nod to its sporting heritage, this timeless Jaguar wears Coombs style rear spats and is fitted with an evocative E-Type style steering wheel. The paintwork is in good order all round, save for one or two very minor blemishes at the bottom of the offside rear passenger door, and the interior is in excellent condition with reconditioned wood, new carpets, new headlining and excellent seating.Offered Without Reserve and in fine order throughout, this 340 Jaguar is worthy of serious consideration at auction.

1954 Jaguar Xk120 Se Roadster

Lot # 529 (Sale Order: 30 of 53)

Launched in Roadster form, at the 1948 London Motor Show as a testbed and show car for the new Jaguar XK engine, the level of acclaim was such that Jaguar founder and design head, William Lyons, put the XK120 into production. The "120" in its name referred to its 120mph top speed which made the XK120 the world's fastest standard production car at the time of its introduction. Success in motor racing secured the cars future and an icon was born. Development continued for the 120 with the introduction of the Special Equipment, or SE, in 1951 which boasted an extra 20bhp, bringing it up to 180bhp, and the styling enjoyed a few subtle changes. Today, Jaguar XKs, and particularly 120s, remain sought after with the Roadsters in particular carrying a premium over the Drophead and Fixed Head Coupés.Supplied new by distributor, Charles Hornburg of Los Angeles, in Spring 1954, this matching-numbers 1954 XK120 SE Roadster was then, as it is today, finished in Cream coachwork with a Blue leather interior and Fawn soft-top, and was delivered to a Nancy H. Biggs of Missouri, according to its Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate. Mrs. Biggs was the wife of David Biggs, a well-known Jaguar enthusiast of the time, and she was also a member of the Sports Car Club of America in her own right. Reputedly, their collection of cars included an Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B, the famous Ferrari 250 TR known as "Big Red", an ex-Jim Kimberly Ferrari 225 S, a Horch, a 1930 Mercedes-Benz, and this Jaguar, which was a gift from husband to wife and remained with them until 1965.For the next 40 or more years, the car remained in the USA (primarily in California) and in 2009, in Southern California, the car was restored to concours standard and was shown several times at JCNA Concours events. On one occasion in 2009, the car scored a remarkable 99 points out of a possible 100. By 2012, and after regular careful use in So Cal this now resplendent Jaguar found its way to its penultimate owner, who felt the need to treat it to a further full cosmetic restoration, including a repaint in the original colour and the chrome was refinished. Receipts for these works are included in the history file.By virtue of their extra power, the SE variants have always been regarded as better to drive, and this fine example was snapped up by a UK enthusiast for the purpose of regularity rallying in Europe, and being left-hand drive was perfect. This is the ideal purpose for such a car, and indeed interest from enthusiasts for these cars is great thanks to their eligibility, usability and comfort on long distance classic rallies like the Mille Miglia. Since arriving in the UK, approximately a further £10,000 (besides registration) has been spent on improving this splendid motor car including a major service and further works to the ignition, brakes, steering rack, hood, electrics and the exhaust.   Not intending to part with this car so soon, its sale today is only to permit the realisation of the vendor's life-long dream to own one of the alloy-bodied XK120 Roadsters that he has been offered by a friend. We have all been tempted in the past to make an impulse purchase at auction and possibly lived to regret it, however, this stunning 120 is proven, reliable, restored and inexcusably pretty and could well turn out to be the car that you will keep forever.

1959 Mercedes-benz 190 Sl Roadster

Lot # 530 (Sale Order: 31 of 53)

The Mercedes-Benz 190SL is a two door convertible manufactured between May 1955 and February 1963. In terms of styling, engineering and suspension, the 190 closely resembled its big brother the 300SL, however the smaller car did not use the 300SL's purpose built tubular space frame but was built instead on a modified shortened saloon platform.I would imagine, that if you were interested in maybe owning a 190SL one day, then you will probably know all that.If you are REALLY interested in buying a 190SL then your search is over. You may have looked at, and considered a number of other 190s, but forget those. This is it. This is non-negotiably THE 190SL.This car is totally mint and freshly out of a nut and bolt restoration. We are always advised not to use the expression "as new" but, I would suggest, that if you walked into a Mercedes- Benz dealer in Germany in 1959 this is what you would see. This car had spent many glamorous years under the California Sun and therefore was solid and rust free when it underwent a meticulous nut and bolt restoration. All the work was fully documented with a large photographic file showing before, during and after pictures. There are dozens of pictures. You don't take dozens of pictures unless you are really proud of your work.(This file will be available to interested parties at the time of the sale). The car is finished in gleaming metallic Silver that is absolutely flawless. The new interior is in a deep Salmon colour with matching carpets and all in the appropriate M-B materials.Under the bonnet the attention to detail is exemplary with brand new parts seemingly wherever you look and everything is to a showroom standard. Perfection of this order is not easily achieved. In preperation for the sale the car has had a full inspection and spanner check by respected Mecedes-Benz specialists Silchester Garage and comes with its original hard top.Imagine yourself on a June evening in this lovely 50's Mercedes, boulevarding through the colourful streets of Villefranche-sur-Mer, enjoying the warm Cote d'Azure air, turning left onto the quayside and rolling gently to a halt by the terrace outside La Mere Germain, to the polite applause of the knowledgeable diners who always appreciate a stunning classic. It doesn't have to be a dream. The car is here and the Restaurant is still there. Why not?

1970 Mercedes-benz 280 Se 3.5 Automatic

Lot # 531 (Sale Order: 32 of 53)

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Coupe was a style statement totally in tune with the sense of extravagance in Central Europe at the end of the sixties. Although quite a large car, with all the windows down it had all the chic of the French pillar-less coupes of the late 50s, but with acres of expensive leather and Burr Maple it oozed Germanic luxury. This is the desirable 3.5 litre, V8 model made for just two years from 1968 and is equipped with the automatic gearbox. The car has lived in the dry Australian interior for the last couple of decades which probably accounts for its rust free condition today. The odometer indicates 11,719 miles and, we understand, has been round the clock once. The Paintwork is finished in deep Fern Green Metallic; a colour that really suits the car. The interior is in original Tan leather and is in very good order throughout as are the Maple wood cappings and dashboard and the white steering wheel. The word "Patina" is often incorrectly used but the interior of this lovely green Mercedes has that wonderful "lived-in feel" of a London Gentleman's Club. These large Mercedes Benz cars have superb reliability and bullet proof mechanics. The engine starts readily & pulls well through the smooth auto box. Braking is likewise reassuringly powerful. The car is in fine order with a very original unmolested feel to it.We think you will approve.

2002 Aston Martin Db7 Vantage V12 Automatic

Lot # 532 (Sale Order: 33 of 53)

The DB7 Vantage was first introduced at the Geneva motor show in 1999 with a 6 litre V12, 48 valve engine giving 420bhp and 400 lbs/ft. of torque. The car was offered by the factory either, as a manual (with Tremec T56 6 speed) or Auto (ZF 5 Speed) transmission. The car was the first really quick DB7, after the original lack lustre straight six offered from launch was dropped. Both suspension and brakes were uprated on the new Vantage and the car was extremely well received by the motoring press for both the significantly increased performance and the handling improvements.Offered here, is a DB7 Vantage V12 Automatic supplied new in the UK through H.W.M Aston Martin of Walton-upon-Thames on 29th May 2002. This example is finished in Stonsay Silver with a light grey leather interior, the seats are piped in Pacific Blue and the dashboard and carpets finished in the same colour. The specification of the car includes 18" alloy wheels, cruise control, a multi-CD player, heated electric seats and satellite navigation. The service book is stamped as follows:SpecialistDateMileageHWM Aston Martin27.5.02107 (Pre-delivery Inspection)HWM Aston Martin12.11.02623HWM Aston Martin13.10.032,755HWM Aston Martin9.11.044,004HWM Aston Martin21.11.055,062HWM Aston Martin15.6.065,650HWM Aston Martin26.10.077,618HWM Aston Martin9.10.088,027 Now showing just over 11,000 miles on the odometer, this car will be supplied with a fresh MoT, along with a UK V5c and all of its original service / drivers manuals in their wallets. 1989 Detomaso Pantera Gt5-s

Lot # 533 (Sale Order: 34 of 53)

Although De Tomaso was very much an Italian company, both in spirit and location, being based in the city of Modena in Emilia-Romagna, its founder, Alejandro de Tomaso came from a prominent farming family in Argentina. Perhaps inspired by his countryman, Juan Manuel Fangio, he moved to Italy in 1955 to pursue a career racing cars. Having made it to Formula One by 1957, his failure to score any Grand Prix points by 1959 prompted him to quit and form his own car company. Modena was already the home of a number of small firms building fast sports cars, and with a pool of experienced designers and skilled craftsmen, seemed an ideal place to start.Over the years a number of exotic designs emanated from De Tomaso, the Valelunga, Deauville, Longchamp and the Guigiaro influenced Mangusta, however it's the Tom Tjaarda designed Pantera that will be remembered as their flagship vehicle with 7260 being built between 1971 and 1992, this figure representing some 86% of the company's total production.Introduced in November 1984 one of the final incarnations of the Pantera was the GT5-S of which less than 190 were produced. A further evolution of the GT5, the S model had blended arches and a distinctive wide-body look. The 'S' in the GT5-S name stood for "steel", as unlike the GT5, the entire body was of steel construction. This particular Pantera GT5-S is one of the last produced, having been built in 1989, and is an original RHD UK car, one of only 17 RHD GT5-Ss out of a total factory production of 187 sold worldwide!Looking resplendent in Rosso Corsa with a Crema interior, it's in lovely condition both inside and out and is a really nice example of a piece of Italian exotica. The car has been well maintained and regularly used, always the best way to ensure that any classic runs well, and in fact last year completed a trip to its Modena birthplace in Northern Italy. The engine and gearbox were stripped and rebuilt approximately 4/5 years ago with the big V8 being uprated to a fast road specification at the time and more recently, the power unit was refreshed in the Winter of 2014. Non-standard components on the car are confined to the engine internals, (though the original block is retained), heads, headers (originals with the car), valve covers (originals with the car), and the fitting of a reliable mechanical oil pressure gauge to supplement the factory item. This displaces the original clock, which has been retained and is supplied with the car to facilitate a return to standard. As the block is original and the majority of the ancillaries are present, the car could easily be returned to the original factory specification.G337XLO was featured in the April 2015 edition of "Retro Cars Magazine" with quite extensive coverage and a copy of this article is provided with the car.An incredible blend of Italian style with American muscle. There may be more outlandish cars out there, but for sheer aural and visual drama, the Pantera takes the prize.

1999 Bentley Azure

Lot # 534 (Sale Order: 35 of 53)

The Bentley Azure was introduced in 1995 and was based on the platform of the Continental R coupé which had been launched in 1991. The Azure often surprised with its size and bulk, intended to both convey a sense of presence and allow for the comfortable seating of four adult passengers. Power came from the company's stalwart 6.75 litre V8, featuring a single intercooled turbocharger producing in the region of 380bhp. The gearbox was a General Motors sourced, four-speed automatic unit with the Azure capable of 0 to 60mph in an impressive 6.1 seconds. Owing to the limited space at Bentley's Crewe factory, the Azure was assembled and finished by Pininfarina, significantly adding to the vehicle's production cost. From 1999, the Azure was also available in 'Mulliner Trim' which added special bespoke details and additional equipment, thus allowing the buyer the option for further customisation during the build process. Pricing varied as equipment could be significantly different from one to the next depending on personal preferences, however, the price list started at just over £200,000.This stunning Bentley Azure was originally registered on 16th September 1999 to a gentleman from Cyprus, as a present for his daughter. Sadly, he passed away shortly afterwards and the car was used sparingly for many years. It was then decided by the family that the Azure required professional maintenance, due to the exceptionally low mileage of only 215 miles. The car was entrusted to a Bentley main agent in Belgium, where a thorough mechanical recommissioning took place in 2009.Now reading just 217 miles, which we believe to be accurate based on its impeccable condition, this Bentley is finished in Sunrise Orange, with a cream leather interior and matching hood, and the car presents beautifully. The paintwork is very hard to fault and the panels gaps are all arrow straight. The interior is as close to new as one could possibly imagine. The cream leather and stitching is in perfect condition and is commensurate with a car that has travelled such low distances. The carpets are all original and look unused and the hood is in stunning condition and works faultlessly. With just one registered keeper from new and showing delivery mileage, this Bentley Azure must be seen to be appreciated. Inspections are encouraged and we welcome any pre-sale viewings. The car will be serviced prior to the auction and all fluids will be changed. Supplied with a current MoT and a decent history file, this Bentley Azure is simply unrepeatable and we feel collectors would be hard pushed to find another example in such pristine condition.

1969 Lynx-jaguar Xkss

Lot # 535 (Sale Order: 36 of 53)

The XKSS was produced following the decision made by Jaguar to pull out of all motorsport at the end of 1955. Sir William Lyons converted their 16 remaining 'D-Types' to road going specification for the American market by adding a passenger door, a full-width windscreen and wipers, an exhaust heat shield, sidescreens, a folding roof, bumpers all round, a luggage rack and rear light clusters. It was to become a complete icon of the era, an outstanding and good looking car driven by the privileged few, including movie stars of the day such as Steve McQueen. Values of the original cars range from £8-£10 million today, if you can find one.Highly respected Lynx Motor Cars was founded in 1968 and quickly made its name restoring and maintaining original C-Types, D-Types and E-Types of the period. Their decision to recreate D-Types and XKSS versions based on Series II E-Type engines and running gear was a logical one, based entirely on their experience with the original cars. Since then over 430 cars have passed through their workshops, either as recreation projects or original cars being restored or maintained. They have built ten XKSS versions over the years of which only three (including this one) have been left-hand drive. Their cars are bespoke and made only to order, making this a very special and rare opportunity.Offered here is a chance to own one of the finest XKSS recreations, built by the Lynx factory to their highest standards and specification, with over 3,000 hours of labour and attention to detail. Based on a 1969 4.2 Series II E-Type suspension, brakes, engine and gearbox the car was completed in 2015 having been converted to full XKSS specification and registered to Lynx Motors (International) Ltd. in Germany as a new car with all TÜV paperwork complete.Finished in Jaguar Gloss Black with complementing Jaguar Red leather interior the car is built on an aluminium monocoque with hand rolled aluminium panels, a rebuilt XK 4.2 litre, six cylinder engine wet sump engine, with double 'fast road' specification camshafts, a ported and flowed cylinder head and triple 45 DCOE Weber carburettors:- giving 270bhp at 4,500 RPM.A Getrag five-speed box delivers all the power smoothly and having just test miles under its belt, it comes to the sale with a 12 month Lynx warranty, from which the privileged first owner will benefit. Equipped with a full-width screen, Dunlop 16" wheels with spinners, authentic D-Type instruments and switch gear, Steve McQueen-specification XKSS seat cushions and glove box hatch, a detachable steering wheel, Monza-style fuel cap, seat belts, stainless steel luggage carrier, removable side screens, black hood and authentic under bonnet detailing. What an outstanding, rare and exciting opportunity to own an iconic and truly beautiful piece of Jaguar history. Bonhams sold a Lynx XKSS last year for £385,000 including commissions, confirming that this car is offered at a very sensible and attractive guide price today.

1964 Jaguar Mkii 4.2 By Lynx

Lot # 536 (Sale Order: 37 of 53)

The Mk II Jaguar saloon, built from late 1959 until 1967and available with three engine sizes, was handsome, comfortable, powerful and handled well. The 3.8 was a quick car, even by today's standards, with 220bhp on tap, resulting in a 0-60mph time of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 125mph and, when new, was one of the fastest four door saloons available in Britain. It gained its place in our collective memory and iconic status partly from its high profile motor racing pedigree, but mainly from the large number of 60's black and white "Cops and Robbers" movies featuring "get-away drivers" in black MkIIs being chased by the Police in a white MkII. It was also the car that you might expect to see parked in the Managing Director's space in a subtle shade of Dark Green or Blue. "Grace, Pace and Space" was Jaguar's period advertising slogan, and this was absolutely epitomised by the Mk II.This gorgeous MkII started life as a 3.8 model and in 1999 its owner decided that the time had come to restore his beloved Jaguar, and by utilising more modern technology take the car to the next level. He approached Lynx Motors of Sussex who are renowned for the quality of their restoration and re-manufacture of historically important Jaguars and their brief was to restore the car and upgrade it in a number of areas with the proviso that it still retained its original look. This they did very successfully, and an indication of the amount of work carried out is provided by invoices, which accompany the car, totaling over £100,000.The car has been fitted with an uprated 4.2 Litre engine coupled to a more modern Jaguar XJ40 4 speed Automatic Gearbox, the suspension upgraded to Lynx Engineering standards, the brakes fully uprated and servo-assisted, and the car now sits on a set of sparkling chrome wire wheels. In the cabin the car features upgrades in the form of Air Conditioning, power steering, electric windows, central locking, and modern style electric front seats. Of course the interior has been fully re-trimmed in Tan Leather along with having specific door cards fabricated for the car and as such retains a wonderful period look. Additional work and upgrades are too extensive to list here but the car's history file contains lots more information.A magnificent and especially useable example of one of the 60's most iconic saloons, this gleaming white Jaguar is being offered at an attainable guide price representing just a fraction of its build cost.

1997 Caterham 21 Vhpd

Lot # 537 (Sale Order: 38 of 53)

Developed as a completely new model by Caterham Cars Ltd in the early 1990s to celebrate 21 years of the company, the Caterham 21 was mechanically similar to its predecessor, the Caterham 7, and incorporated a space-frame chassis with a newly designed GRP body, making it much more of a useable and comfortable roadster, whilst offering a 1.6 and a 1.8 litre engine, the latter producing 190bhp, and the superb Caterham designed, 6-speed gearbox.Offered here is a 21 used by Caterham Cars Ltd. as their original brochure, press and road test car. When tested by renowned Autocar journalist, Steve Sutcliffe in October 1997 he managed 0-60 in 4.5 secs with the car running in its original 190 bhp form. Being the press car, this example had a superb specification and is believed to be the fastest 21 produced. Included in the history file are the brochures and a copy of the Autocar magazine featuring this car. Presented in Honda Passion Metallic Orange with Black Leather trim, this 21 rides on its original 16-inch Caterham HPC wheels, which have been recently refurbished in gunmetal grey. Fitted with a Mohair hood and cover, the cabin is completed by a Momo steering wheel, fire extinguisher, roll hoops and a driver's 4-point harness. The car had an engine and gearbox rebuild at 30,000 miles, with engine upgrades increasing the power output to 204bhp. Work at this time included a gas flowed head, Jenvey throttle bodies, Vernier pulleys, Emerald ECU, Alloy Rad, Air/Oil separator and a bespoke twin stainless steel exhaust costing £1,000. The car was corner weighted at 691kg, equating to a power/weight figure of over 300bhp/per tonne! Thankfully, AP Racing 4-pot brake callipers ensure the car stops equally as well as it goes. This car has been meticulously maintained and has a full service book stamped from new to 58,470 miles (Aug 2013) with two folders of receipts for all the work carried out.  Sutcliffe summarises by saying "blindingly quick and hyper responsive in a car which also has a full sized boot unlike the Elise and Renault Sport Spider of the time."This Caterham 21 is a rapid and nimble little roadster and, with its distinctive looks and relative rarity, is sure to turn heads.

1997 Ferrari F355 Berlinetta

Lot # 538 (Sale Order: 39 of 53)

The Ferrari F355 is a modern classic, so beautiful, so well engineered and so well received that it marked the beginning of the end of the old guard ‘Ferraristi' philosophy that the only "real" Ferraris were ones with 12 cylinder engines. The Ferrari F355 Berlinetta and Targa GTS burst onto the world stage in the spring of 1994 with almost exactly the same dimensions as its predecessor the 348, yet it was virtually a new car, as its stunning coachwork indicated. Many hours of wind tunnel testing influenced the harmonious shape, which incorporated a Formula One style flat bottom with channelled airflow generating enough downforce to offset any lift. The longitudinally mounted 3496cc V8 produced a stunning 374bhp at a spine tingling 8250rpm and the gearbox now had six speeds with a new type of synchromesh making changes so much smoother. New, electronically adjustable, shock absorbers varied their stiffness within milliseconds to suit the road surface. Around Ferrari's 1.86 mile Fiorano test track, the 355 was two seconds a lap faster than the 12 cylinder 512 TR and, that level of performance combined with its sensational looks, made it a world wide success story. This European specification manual gearbox, LHD, F355 Berlinetta is in outstanding condition having been carefully looked after and maintained throughout its life.Showing a mere 45000kms (approx. 28,000mls), the car is accompanied by a detailed history file, and in 2013 underwent a major service which, of course, included the all important cam belt replacement. The service history is as follows.7/7/97 - pdi - Garage de l'athénée Ferrari18/07/1997 - 1060kms - Garage de l'athénée Ferrari12/01/2000 - 7756kms - Garage de l'athénée Ferrari11/11/2002 - 21133kms - Garage de l'athénée Ferrari03/02/2004 - 28480kms - Garage de l'athénée Ferrari28/04/2005 - 38687kms - Garage Zenith Ferrari06/09/2013 - 41450kms - Sportgarage Ruch full belt serviceThis 355 is enhanced by subtle upgrades in the form of drilled disc brakes, a "Challenge" grill, a Tubi Exhaust and, as an added bonus, has been signed by legendary Ferrari Formula 1 driver René Arnoux.Buyers are finally becoming aware just how useable and enjoyable these cars really are, so join the party quickly, as we all know what's happening to the prices of popular Ferraris.

1958 Jaguar Xk150 Fixedhead Coupe

Lot # 539 (Sale Order: 40 of 53)

The XK120 was launched in 1948 and was an international sensation finally putting Jaguar on the world stage, and with the cars successes in competition a hugely positive period began for the company. The XK150 was the final incarnation of the XK line and appeared in May 1957. A more refined and capable machine than its predecessors, the 150 was easily identifiable by its higher scuttle and door line, wider grille and improved interior space. However, the XK150 retained much of the mechanical layout of the XK140 sharing the same 3.4 litre DOHC Jaguar straight-six, which developed 180bhp at 5750rpm. Offered here is what can only be described as a full restoration project and fortunately, it still retains it original registration number PDM 817 and buff log book starting with owners from 1967. It seems as if it was taken off the road in 1984. Any restoration would allow the original colour of bronze to be reinstated together with the tan interior which would make a striking combination. Our vendor tells us that the engine, which is not matching numbers, starts and runs. As far as we can see, it is a complete car and a worthwhile cause as XKs continue to rise steadily in value.

1970 Lotus Elan S4 Se

Lot # 540 (Sale Order: 41 of 53)

Handles like nothing else can...the Lotus Elan.Colin Chapman said... ‘In producing the latest Lotus Drop-head and Fixed-head Coupe models, my design team set out to combine the outstandingly successful chassis, suspension and handling of the Elan with finely styled bodywork which would add functional good looks to the traditional Lotus handling and safety. We specified the comfort and silence of a luxury saloon (...) Finally, I demanded even higher standards of safety, quality and reliability than those which have made the Elan famous (...) All these objectives have been achieved in the new Lotus Elan S4 and I am proud to offer it for your consideration'.‘To say that driving the Elan is immense fun is almost an understatement. It is a car which keeps young men young and makes old men younger...' "Motor"The Lotus Elan features a very strong steel backbone chassis on which is mounted, like a saddle, a GRP body. It has 4-wheel disc brakes and independent suspension all round. Power is delivered from the famous Lotus 1558cc Twin Cam engine through a Ford 4-speed gearbox to the rear wheels. This results in a compliant ride and very nimble handling characteristics. The Elan has enjoyed significant success in motor sport since the days it was launched and is evident in large numbers in historic racing. Production volume of the Elan S4 was about 3000 cars in total, with a small percentage being the SE version. The ‘Special Equipment' version differs by having servo assisted brakes, an SE engine developing 118 bhp instead of 105 bhp, safety belts, a leather covered steering wheel, knock-on wheels with chrome embellishers, carpeted boot interior and Special Equipment badges.Sold new in the UK in March 1970, this beautiful Lotus S4 SE Drop-head Coupe is finished in bright red with a black leatherette interior. A file with over 40 years of continuous and extensive history comes with this attractive little sports car. The mileage, while unwarranted, of 78,400 is backed by service history and MOT certificates dating back to the 1980s.The car was restored in the early 1990s on a powder coated Spider chassis and has covered a low mileage since. Recently it has been given a fresh, bare shell respray and all four Rotoflex and shock absorbers were replaced during its refurbishment.Fitted with the Original numbers matching Lotus SE engine, with H-stamped cylinder head, it has benefited from a recent overhaul by a renowned specialist with (amongst others) a new water pump, timing chain, valve seats and guides, bearings and fuel pump. Known modifications to originality are a free flow K&N air filter instead of the restricting original airbox, a modern radiator to improve cooling capacity and a stainless steel exhaust. The Elan is fitted with its original, working radio and comes with promotional literature, the owner's manual and original workshop manual. This is a lovely and very usable example of an iconic Classic, which is both an elegant and sophisticated convertible, and a thoroughbred sports car with unbeatable handling.

1993 Ferrari 348 Ts

Lot # 541 (Sale Order: 42 of 53)

The Ferrari 348 series marked a radical departure in the way Maranello constructed its cars, replacing as they did a chassis of traditional steel tubes with a much stiffer monocoque structure attached to a tubular rear subframe. Suspension remained independent front and rear with wishbones, springs, telescopic shocks, antiroll bars, and revised geometry. The ventilated disc brakes were much larger than those of its predecessor the Ferrari 328, and used anti-lock technology. A midship mounted V8 returned, but it was larger and more powerful displacing 3405cc, mounted longitudinally and mated to a transverse gearbox. The displacement accounted for the new car's Ferrari 348 designation. A higher compression ratio and updated fuel injection helped generate 300 horsepower, 30-40 more than the Ferrari 328, whilst dry-sump lubrication gave the new Ferrari a lower centre of gravity. The 348 was the last design under the supervision of legendary chief stylist Leonardo Fioravanti. Taking cues from the Testarossa, its lines were softer than those of the 328 but still curvaceous, the side strakes being the most obvious Testarossa inspiration. The wheelbase was longer than the 328's and the track wider, giving the interior more space. This 348 TS was imported from Germany and has had 2 owners from new. It's a left-hand drive example and has an odometer reading of only 43,000 kilometres or 26,719 miles. It features a Challenge exhaust system that sounds absolutely fantastic and comes with a good service history. A fresh service has just been carried out in Denmark and it is described as ready to go. Finished in Giallo Fly Yellow with a black leather interior, the car presents very well indeed. The 348 has been largely ignored in the Ferrari market and offered here for sale is surely one of the best value Ferraris in the UK. With values of its predecessor, the 328, edging closer to and sometimes beyond £100,000 and its successor, the F355, selling above the £50,000 bracket, this 348 offers ideal entry level Ferrari ownership for a most realistic outlay.

1977 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0

Lot # 542 (Sale Order: 43 of 53)

Anyone interested in purchasing an older 911 will have a good idea of how these iconic cars developed over the years, so we will concentrate on this particular car.Originally supplied on the 23rd of June in 1977 by Charles Follett Ltd. of Berkeley Square this is one of only 3400 Carrera Sports built, and is very rare in right hand drive. Finished in its original Grand Prix White with the signature black Carrera stripes, it has a factory electric sunroof, electric windows, correct Fuchs alloys, a model correct rubber rear spoiler, green tinted windows and a rear wiper. The vin number and engine number match the records in the original service book and the odometer indicates just over 100,000 miles which is supported by an extensive service and maintenance record file. It appears that this 911 has covered less than 5000 miles in the last 10 years and has been unused for the last 3. The Porsche service book remains in its original burgundy wallet. The maintenance history makes mention of a top end rebuild with a new clutch, injectors and gearbox overhaul being done at circa 77,000 miles and the engine certainly sounds sweet but, having been unused for 3 years, a full service would be advisable. A 12 month MOT has recently been issued. It's great that the car still wears its original Grand Prix White and, although the paintwork has some flaws, it's absolutely fine for use now or it can be painted at some point in the future should you wish. The interior is in black and very tidy. Altogether a quick, attractive and very rare 70's Porsche.

1990 Lancia Lancia Delta Hf Integrale 16v

Lot # 543 (Sale Order: 44 of 53)

Despite the fact that the 8 valve Integrale had dominated the 1988 World Rally Championship, Lancia knew that further upgrades, and particularly more power, were needed to keep the car competitive with newer rivals. Accordingly, the extensively developed 16 valve car appeared a short time later, and made a winning debut on the 1989 San Remo Rally. The 16v Integrale was launched at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show and the new car could be distinguished from its predecessor by the raised bonnet centre section to accommodate the, slightly taller, 16 valve engine. Other visible exterior changes were wider wheels and tyres and new identity badges front and rear. The torque split was changed to 47% front and 53% rear to give the car better handling characteristics. The turbocharged 2-litre Lancia engine, already a powerful, refined performer was further developed for the Integrale 16v. Generating 200 bhp. (149 kW) at 5500 rpm, it took the car to a maximum speed of 137 mph (220 km/h) and from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 5.5 seconds. Larger injectors provided higher power output and more effective use of the fuel feed at high engine speeds. The response of the Garrett T3 turbocharger was immediate, thanks to the reduced inertia of the turbine removing turbo-lag, and a highly efficient intercooler enabled the engine to run at high outputs for longer without compromising reliability. The new over-boost system used a proportional electrovalve to increase engine torque to 220 lb/ft (298 N•m) at 3,000 rpm. All these improvements made the road-going version of the Integrale 16v a spirited, reliable and inherently safe car. This superb, left-hand drive, Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16v is finished in lovely Nero Metallic with a Grey Harlem interior. Showing 74,500kms (46,000mls), the car is presented in excellent order having spent most of its life in the ownership of a European collector, who cherished the little Lancia and took it with him whenever he moved.First registered in Spain, and later in Holland, a move to Switzerland dictated that he, sadly, had to part with the car as the big Turbo and the lack of a Catalytic Convertor meant that the car fell foul of local regulations and could not be registered.Very rarely found in this condition, this Delta comes with the relevant Manuals and a stamped history book and is UK Registered with all taxes paid. The car has had a recent Full Service including the, all important, Cam Belt replacement.A real stunner, these 4 wheel drive pocket rockets are great fun to drive and are gaining real traction in the market as usable future classics.

1989 Porsche 911 930 Turbo

Lot # 544 (Sale Order: 45 of 53)

The 911 Turbo, introduced in 1975 and remaining in production until 1989, was sufficiently different from previous versions to earn a new, 930, model number. Externally distinctive with its "Whale Tail" rear spoiler, wide tyres, bulging wheel arches and macho stance, 930s were also equipped with air conditioning, electric windows, a leather interior, tinted glass, headlamp washers and Bilstein shocks as standard. After two years the engine was enlarged from 3 litres to 3.3 and power outputs increased over time, from 260 to 330 bhp. Turbo lag was an ever-present problem, only really being resolved in the last year of production in 1989 with an engine re-map and the introduction of a five speed gearbox giving a much more useable power band. With 330 horses available, mostly at the same time, a 4-speed gearbox and the 911's distinctive handling characteristics, inappropriate use of the throttle could quickly turn a scenic drive into a drive through the scenery, however the 1989, 5-speed car offered here is considerably more user friendly. The, Guards Red, Turbo for sale today has been in the same ownership since 1993 and has been meticulously maintained and serviced at, either an Official Porsche Dealership, or an acknowledged Marque Specialist. The body and paintwork are in excellent condition as is the lovely original interior.Service documents and the MoT Certificates support the claimed total mileage of 68,600 and the car comes complete with all the Owners Manuals, an original Porsche cleaning kit, puncture repair pack and two sets of keys. With its "Tea Tray" rear spoiler and "Look at me" presence the 911 Turbo somehow came to represent the unfortunate excesses of the Eighties, but that image has faded over the last few years and the Turbo is now seen as a wonderful iconic classic Porsche. One for the discerning owner and not to be missed.

1965 Jaguar E-type Roadster Conversion

Lot # 545 (Sale Order: 46 of 53)

From the collection of retired professional rally driver Kevin Videan.During the 1970s Kevin Videan competed in a number of national and international rallies, as a works driver for Datsun he helped to establish the Datsun 240Z as a legendary rally car, and in his personal Porsche 2.7 Carrera RS lightweight, Kevin won the 1977 Gremlin Motoring News Rally. In later life Kevin established a small, but perfectly formed, collection of best of breed British motor cars. We have the honour of offering three of Kevin's motor cars at this sale and this fully restored 1965 E-Type, which has been meticulously and professionally converted from a fixed head coupe to a roadster at a cost of more than £50,000, and has covered just 3,950 miles since restoration. There have been volumes written on the E-Type, indeed there is no other British car, perhaps second only to the Mini, that has generated such a cult following. It is therefore our intention to concentrate on the many merits of this exceptional E-Type roadster on offer today. When the third owner took his 4.2 Series 1 fixed head coupe for restoration, he was offered the opportunity to convert the car to roadster specification. Not only was the car superbly restored, the engine rebuilt with VSE unleaded head and the interior re-trimmed, but the roadster conversion used new panels and parts to make it identical to a contemporary 4.2 roadster. The new, original specification, soft top fits perfectly to the windscreen with the period correct, roadster spec triple catches. The full new leather interior now has a superb patina in keeping with the rest of the car, the period dashboard and steering wheel. The paintwork was completely refreshed in the gleaming Carmen red you see today and the chassis and paint plates were reattached to the car. After the restoration was complete, the DVLA was notified of the car's new status and it is duly listed in the V5C as a convertible.Today this E-Type presents itself in totally outstanding condition, but more importantly it's what's under the famous bonnet that counts. Of the numerous new parts and upgrades fitted during the restoration of particular note are the following; GAZ shock absorbers are part of the new suspension arrangements, four pot calliper brakes, a Kenlowe fan and a new synchro gearbox. The history file boasts numerous invoices attesting to the quality of the restoration and conversion, and included in the sale are the original E-Type 4.2 Owner's handbook, recent E-Type maintenance book, a weighty tome in itself, a copper hammer, jack and a wooden spinner remover. When purchased by Kevin, the car's fourth owner, it needed a certain amount of re-commissioning, having been in storage for some eight years. The car was carefully worked on by respected racing motor engineer and restorer Giles Beck who carried out a major service and fitted a new battery. A copy of his report can be found in the history file. He is quoted as saying "After eight years of storage I found this car to be in remarkable condition which is testament to the superb restoration it has received. On a test drive I could find no faults. This is one of the best E Types I have driven."With restored Series 1 E-Types soaring past the £150,000 mark, this car offers the buyer an opportunity to own, drive and enjoy one of the very best examples on offer at a third of the price. The car will be presented at auction freshly serviced, and has an MoT until March 2016, ready for roof-down summer motoring or continental touring.

1995 Porsche 911 993 Coupe

Lot # 546 (Sale Order: 47 of 53)

The 993 was the last of the Porsche 911 range to feature air cooled flat six engines and they're viewed by many aficionados as the finest 911s ever produced. The 993's handling and overall driveability were markedly better than its predecessor, a product partly of a wider track but mainly as a result of the all alloy multi-link suspension set up, which replaced the traditional semi-trailing arms of previous iterations and no other 911 could demonstrate such high speed cornering stability. The transmission was improved with the arrival of a six-speed manual gearbox (a first for Porsche) which not only surpassed the previous four and five-speed gearboxes in usability, but was smoother and a lot more satisfying. Mechanically, the cross-drilled brakes were larger and a dual-flow exhaust system was fitted. Externally the bodywork was revised to give a more rounded style with wider rear arches, much prettier than its successor the 996 and a shape to which Porsche returned with the 997.This stunning example is finished in special order paint (F8 Midnight Blue Metallic) with the interior in Grey Leather. An original UK, Right Hand Drive and Manual Gearbox example, this lovely Porsche has been fastidiously maintained throughout its life, the last 15 years of which has been in the custodianship of our vendor.Cosmetically the car is in superb condition all round, and benefits from the paint on the wings, bumpers and doors being refreshed in 2006, to address the inevitable stone chips. The work was carried out by Porsche approved paint specialists Premier Body, who undertook this work to a factory standard and the colour blend is perfect.Showing 77,578 miles at the time of consigning, the car is presented with a fully detailed service history as can been seen below. This 993 has been maintained as per factory recommendations almost solely by Porsche Main Dealers except for two services by a local marque specialist. Most recently, in November 2014 the car received a major service, including belt replacement, and has covered a mere 150 miles since.22/8/95 - 12,911 - service by AFN Reading22/1/96 - 26,158 - service by AFN Reading31/10/96 - 39,341 - service by AFN Reading25/4/97 - 45,426 - service by Dick Lovett20/3/99 - 54,174 - service HR Owen, St. Albans 29/11/99 - 55,279 - service by Portiacraft, new flywheel and clutch23/2/00 - 56,194 - service (48k) at Arlington Porsche, Northampton27/4/01 - 59,045 - service, Arlington Porsche, Northampton. 1986 Ford Sierra Rs Cosworth

Lot # 547 (Sale Order: 48 of 53)

Surely one of the motor industries best kept secrets, the Sierra Cosworth Road Sport was an affordable, high performance saloon with lower production numbers than its Sapphire and 4x4 cousins. Despite motorsport being in its DNA, the RS Cosworth is versatile and usable and these cars are swiftly becoming collectors pieces with values climbing accordingly. The result of a Ford Motorsport project aimed at producing a winning European group A car, the RS is equipped with a YBB 16 valve, twin cam engine with the road going version producing around 204bhp. This power was transmitted through a Mustang 5 speed gearbox and the suspension, chassis and aerodynamics were all developed using race technology. The commitment to creating a legitimate, race winning car is evident in the bodywork and styling, with the large rear wing designed to ensure stability at speeds in excess of 300km/h and the openings between the headlights creating a good airflow to the intercooler.First registered in 1986, this LHD example, offered in Moonstone blue with a matching deep blue interior, has been very well maintained as is evident from its super condition.Showing just 112,000kms (approx. 69,500 miles) overall, the car appears to be very original and untouched and even retains its original exhaust system. The vehicle comes with all its manuals and a great service history, indicating that it has had a recent extensive service and that the Cambelts have been replaced in the last 12 months. At this guide price, this purposeful Cosworth surely looks excellent value in today's market, and an opportunity to own and enjoy something special from the Eighties.

1930 Austin Chummy

Lot # 548 (Sale Order: 49 of 53)

From the collection of retired professional rally driver Kevin Videan.During the 1970s Kevin Videan competed in a number of national and international rallies, as a works driver for Datsun he helped to establish the Datsun 240Z as a legendary rally car and in his personal Porsche Carrera RS lightweight, Kevin won the 1977 Gremlin Motoring News Rally. In later life Kevin established a small, but perfectly formed collection of best of breed British motor cars. We have the honour of offering three of Kevin's motor cars at this sale and this immaculate Austin Chummy, named Bluebell by her former owners, a family ownership of some forty five years, is beyond doubt one of the finest examples of the Chummy available today. The Austin 7 was produced in many guises from 1922 to 1939 and was the first truly affordable mass-produced vehicle of British design and manufacture. The importance of the heritage of the Austin 7 cannot be overstated as without it the Austin company would have financially failed and the inter-war population would have been deprived of the chance of owning their first motor car. In fact, several well-known companies might not have succeeded if they had not been able to become licensed manufacturers of the design. The first BMW was an Austin 7, known as a Dixi in Germany, and in Japan, Nissan based their first cars on it. The Swallow version of the Austin 7 laid the foundations of the Jaguar Car Company. So with the formalities over with, please allow us to introduce Bluebell. Her birth certificate has her registered on the 28th March 1930, giving her age as a, not inconsiderable, eighty-five. In keeping with many starlets of the inter-war era Bluebell was beginning to show her age during the 1990s and her family decided, that after a couple of decades of ownership, she should get the restoration she deserved. They embarked on a thirteen year, full body off, journey of restoration using the best Austin specialists available including Roach Engineering. The engine and running gear were worked on by Mac Bonar working with Sutton Rebores, who re-bored the engine and fitted new pistons, new valve guides and valves and a high volume oil pump. The radiator was re-cored by Anglia Radiators, the chassis components were shot blasted and the wheels were rebuilt and zinc coated by James Wheldon, using new rims and spokes. In keeping with cars of this vintage the electrical components required upgrading to 21st century demands. A 12-volt conversion was skilfully carried out, enabling Bluebell's re-silvered headlamps with original glass to shine brightly. The 12-volt conversion was so skilfully done that only an expert can tell it has been done at all. Bluebell also features many period details such as an extra wing-mounted Shell livery can, a spare Shell liveried oil container, a bulb horn, a genuine baby Klaxon horn, wing mirrors, luggage rack and fire extinguisher among many others. Of particular note is the spare plug container made of solid brass that holds a set of Lodge plugs and carries an inscription of the car's name and restoration details. When Kevin took ownership in 2008 he wanted to improve Bluebell's interior, and although the PVC interior was skilfully done, he wanted a touch more luxury to complement the extraordinary bodywork. Commissioning renowned upholsterer Kerry Colson, the interior re-trim took a month with a final bill of £4,000. Bluebell now has one of the finest Chummy interiors, if not the finest available. Bluebell's history file has been carefully collated by her family of forty-five years, and contains among others, a 1945 logbook, a raft of old MoTs and extensive invoices. When the restoration and full engine rebuild was complete the odometer was zeroed, as is common, and at the time of consignment it reads approximately 4,100 miles. A memorable occasion early on in Kevin's custodianship of Bluebell, was the Austin Seven London to Brighton Run in 2009, and the car is ready and willing to join future rallies. Bluebell will be presented at auction freshly serviced and with a clean bill of health, otherwise known as an MoT.

1942 Ford Gpw 'willys' Jeep

Lot # 549 (Sale Order: 50 of 53)

When E.C. Seagar created his famous cartoon character "Popeye" in 1936, and surrounded him with a cast of characters, one of whom was called "Eugene the Jeep", he could never have imagined that the term "Jeep" would be in common use, world wide, some eight decades later.Eugene the Jeep was Popeye's "jungle pet" and was "small, able to move between dimensions and could solve seemingly impossible problems", characteristics shared by the General Purpose (GP) vehicle issued to American combat soldiers fighting on the front lines in war-torn Europe. Having been brought up on a diet of Popeye cartoons it was not surprising that this tough little vehicle, which would frequently get them out of some real "scrapes", became affectionately know as a Jeep.Impressively the time taken from conception and tenders being sent out, to the production lines starting to roll, was less than two hundred days, amazing for a vehicle that has stood the test of time and become an unlikely motoring icon. This ability to get things done quickly and well, was the deciding factor in America being asked to produce military hardware in vast numbers and build hundreds of ships, arguably influencing the outcome of the Second World War.As the war progressed Willys-Overland produced over 300,000 Jeeps and the Ford Motor Co. was drafted in to help boost production and contributed over 250,000 units. Ford manufactured Jeeps were recognizable by their pressed steel grilles as opposed to the Willys' slat grille style.Considering the manner in which the Jeep was conceived and its role in warfare, it's remarkable that most of the finest classic car collections will include a Willys or Ford WWII Jeep, making the restored example offered here a candidate for serious consideration should one of these yardstick cars have, so far, eluded you. This excellent and rare, Ford built, GPW Jeep was imported in to the UK in 2012 having been fastidiously restored by the president of the Ford GPW owners club in the USA and is a consummate piece of military history.A USB drive included with the cars history file documents the restoration. Every nut and bolt received attention and the detail is fantastic, even down to the period tools and heavy-duty towrope attached to the vehicle.Every rural car show in the country now has a section for Military Vehicles, and with WW2 re-enactments and the prestigious classic car meetings all clamouring for 1940's Jeeps, this stunningly well restored example could keep you busy all Summer.
