BOMBER! Famous Bomber Missions of World War II by Robert Jackson WW2

Lot # 6

Very good condition, hardcover, St. Martin Press. "He gives bomber crews a voice, recognising their extreme level of suffering as bravery and applauding them for it. It i...mores revealed how frequently they were called to leave the security of their bases and fly for long hours over dangerous enemy territory, braving swarms of fighters, not knowing if they would survive... Jackson puts this into perspective as he detailing describes the losses suffered in both the American attack on Scweinfurt and Regensburg and the RAF night raid on Nürnberg, where in total the Allies lost over 150 heavy bombers and nearly 1,300 aircrew. It is through this destruction, terror and limitless fighting that Jackson portrays the level of horror that took place in the Second World War and the amount of courage it would have taken to survive it. Most poignantly, the French crew who became the first Allied airmen to bomb Berlin; the six RAF Lancasters that flew deep into Germany in daylight; and the American attack on the oil refineries at Ploesti are just a few of the many courageous stories of courage."

WARSHIPS OF THE WORLD An Illustrated Encyclopedia

Lot # 8

Very good condition, large size hardcover, Military Press New York. "This is an illustrated encyclopedia with more than 500 photographs. It is an illustrated guide for th...moree most powerful military seafaring vessels, with over 500 stunning photographs. It discusses the history and evolution of warships, from the first man-powered vessels of the ancient world, through to the frigates of the Renaissance and to the fast-attack crafts used during the two world wars. It features fascinating chapters on the first sailing warships, the battleship and battleship cruiser, the destroyer, the aircraft carrier and the submarine. Historical paintings, and colour and black-and-white photographs bring each vessel to life, with detailed specifications about size, speed, power and capacity. The warship originated in antiquity as a means of asserting a country's power at sea, and was originally little more than a merchant ship from which archers, slingers and spearmen could bombard the enemy ship before boarding it. Developments in technology saw the change from oars and sails to steam, to the advent of gunpowder weapons and finally to the transformation in the 20th century of these warships' abilities in terms of firepower, protection and electronic capability. In this meticulously researched, illustrated volume, the history of the warship is laid out in an engaging and accessible style. Beginning with a comprehensive introductory chapter to the evolution of the warship, each fascinating chapter that follows focuses on a particular type of ship - battleships, destroyers, aircraft carriers, submarines and more. Accompanied by archive and museum photographs, illustrations and paintings, some of the world's most famous and active warships are brought to life, making this the ultimate reference for anybody with an interest in naval or military history."

HITLER MOVES EAST: A Graphic Chronicle 1941-1943 WW2

Lot # 11

David Levinthal and Garry Trudeau large format hardcover, some small wear on the dust jacket, interesting photographs. "First published to little notice in 1977, Hitler M...moreoves East is now widely regarded as a groundbreaking classic of modern photography. In this elegant, large-format limited edition, David Levinthal and Garry Trudeau’s seminal book is finally being presented at a scale that does full justice to their haunting vision of war. As the New York Times pointed out ten years after publication, “Levinthal’s war pictures are radically new," and indeed they were. Using cheap, molded plastic toy soldiers and tanks, art school classmates Trudeau and Levinthal conceived a fascinating new narrative form, a “paper movie,” at once deeply evocative and unabashedly fake. Combining selected archival materials with photographs of 1/35-scale toys placed in meticulously constructed miniature settings, the two artists conjured up an astonishing reimagining of World War II’s most epic campaign—the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Traveling precariously between fantasy and reality, Levinthal and Trudeau produced a work now recognized as both a sublime graphic manifesto and a powerful documentary of men at war."

HITLER'S DIPLOMAT by Joachim Von & Weitz Ribbentrop

Lot # 23

HITLER'S DIPLOMAT by Joachim Von & Weitz Ribbentrop, Published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London (1992) Very good condition hardcover. "This first full-length English-lang...moreuage biography of Joachim von Ribbentrop, Adolf Hitler's notorious foreign minister, is also an authoritative account of the social and political workings of Nazi Germany. The result of a lifetime of research and firsthand experience, the book combines narrative history of the highest order and intimate familiarity with the people, events, and social currents that animated Hitler's regime. A well-to-do social climber who made and married money, von Ribbentrop was among the few in Hitler's circle with a claim to social prominence. As ambassador to England, von Ribbentrop quickly worked his way up to head the Foreign Ministry, along the way negotiating the British Naval Agreement, the Anti-Comintern Pact, and the Soviet Non-Aggression Pact. Frustrated during the war, when diplomacy was rendered virtually obsolete, von Ribbentrop never forsook his Fuhrer even at Nurnberg, where he was tried and hanged as a senior war criminal. With a provocative foreword by Tom Wolfe that draws disturbing comparisons between the Berlin of the 1930s and American society of the 1980s, Hitler's Diplomat is not only the riveting story of one of Hitler's closest collaborators, it also provides a window onto a side of Nazi Germany that is as fascinating as it is troubling: the men and women of culture and means who gave themselves to Hitler and his war machine."

INFAMY: PEARL HARBOR and It's Aftermath by John Toland

Lot # 24

Good condition hardcover with wear on the dust jacket. Doubleday & Company. "estselling author and historian John Toland's expertise and skill as a narrator were awarded ...morewith the Pulitzer Prize for his sweeping Rising Sun. In Infamy, Toland extends and corrects his account of the events leading up to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, addressing persistent questions: Could FDR have engineered a conspiracy to get the US into the War? Did high-level military and civilian leaders lie under oath? Were the wrong men held culpable in order to protect Washington? Accessing formerly secret government, military, and diplomatic records--including the account of the then anonymous and controversial "Seaman Z"-Toland masterfully reevaluates what we know about this infamous act of aggression against the US."

NAPOLEON As Military Commander by James Marshall Cornwall

Lot # 26

Very good condition, Barnes Noble Publishers. "Tracing Napoleon's development as both a general and statesman, distinguished historian James Marshall-Cornwall brings to l...moreife the career of one of history's greatest military strategists. Focusing on the two decades during which Napoleon achieved his greatest triumphs and suffered his most heartbreaking defeats, this thoroughly researched study keenly analyzes how, like Oliver Cromwell, Napoleon combined strategy and statecraft throughout his career. From his most brilliant campaigns-in particular his conquest of Piedmont and his triumphant invasion of Italy-to the disasters at Trafalgar, in the Iberian Peninsula, in Russia, at Leipzig, and his final downfall at Waterloo, Napoleon as Military Commander tells the story of a general whose defeats were as remarkable as his victories."

INFERNO The World at War 1939-1945 by Max Hastings WW2

Lot # 25

Very good condition, Alfred A. Knopf New York. "From one of our finest military historians, a monumental work that shows us at once the truly global reach of World War II...more and its deeply personal consequences. For thirty-five years, Max Hastings has researched and written about different aspects of the war. Now, for the first time, he gives us a magnificent, single-volume history of the entire conflict. Through his strikingly detailed stories of everyday people—of soldiers, sailors and airmen; British housewives and Indian peasants; SS killers and the citizens of Leningrad—Hastings provides a singularly intimate portrait of the world at war. Remarkably informed and wide-ranging, Inferno is both elegantly written and cogently argued. Above all, it is a new and essential understanding of one of the greatest and bloodiest events of the twentieth century."

SYMPHONY FOR THE CITY OF THE DEAD by M.T. Anderson - SIEGE OF LENINGRAD

Lot # 27

Very good condition, Candlewick Press, hardcover. "In September 1941, Adolf Hitler’s Wehrmacht surrounded Leningrad in what was to become one of the longest and most dest...moreructive sieges in Western history—almost three years of bombardment and starvation that culminated in the harsh winter of 1943–1944. More than a million citizens perished. Survivors recall corpses littering the frozen streets, their relatives having neither the means nor the strength to bury them. Residents burned books, furniture, and floorboards to keep warm; they ate family pets and—eventually—one another to stay alive. Trapped between the Nazi invading force and the Soviet government itself was composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who would write a symphony that roused, rallied, eulogized, and commemorated his fellow citizens—the Leningrad Symphony, which came to occupy a surprising place of prominence in the eventual Allied victory. This is the true story of a city under siege: the triumph of bravery and defiance in the face of terrifying odds. It is also a look at the power—and layered meaning—of music in beleaguered lives. Symphony for the City of the Dead is a masterwork thrillingly told and impeccably researched by National Book Award–winning author M. T. Anderson."

THE DAY OF BATTLE - The War in Sicily and Italy by Rick Atkinson WW2

Lot # 29

Very good condition, hardcover, Henry Holt & Company. "In An Army at Dawn?winner of the Pulitzer Prize?Rick Atkinson provided an authoritative history of the Allied trium...moreph in North Africa during World War II. Now, in The Day of Battle, he follows the strengthening American and British armies as they invade Sicily in July 1943 and then, mile by bloody mile, fight their way north toward Rome. The decision to invade the so-called soft underbelly of Europe was controversial, but once under way, the commitment to liberate Italy from the Nazis never wavered. The battles at Salerno, Anzio, the Rapido River, and Monte Cassino were particularly lethal, yet as the months passed, the Allied forces continued to drive the Germans up the Italian peninsula. And with the liberation of Rome in June 1944, ultimate victory at last began to seem inevitable. Drawing on a wide array of primary source material, written with great drama and flair, The Day of Battle is a masterly account of one of history's most compelling military campaigns."

DEATHRIDE - HITLER vs. STALIN 1941-1945 by John Mosier

Lot # 30

Very good condition, Simon Shuster & Company, hardcover. "The German invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, began a war that lasted nearly four years and created ...moreby far the bloodiest theater in World War II. In the conventional narrative of this war, Hitler was defeated by Stalin because, like Napoleon, he underestimated the size and resources of his enemy. In fact, says historian John Mosier, Hitler came very close to winning and lost only because of the intervention of the western Allies. Stalin’s great triumph was not winning the war, but establishing the prevailing interpretation of the war. The Great Patriotic War, as it is known in Russia, would eventually prove fatal, setting in motion events that would culminate in the collapse of the Soviet Union.Deathride argues that the Soviet losses in World War II were unsustainable and would eventually have led to defeat. The Soviet Union had only twice the population of Germany at the time, but it was suffering a casualty rate more than two and a half times the German rate. Because Stalin had a notorious habit of imprisoning or killing anyone who brought him bad news (and often their families as well), Soviet battlefield reports were fantasies, and the battle plans Soviet generals developed seldom responded to actual circumstances. In this respect the Soviets waged war as they did everything else: through propaganda rather than actual achievement. What saved Stalin was the Allied decision to open the Mediterranean theater. Once the Allies threatened Italy, Hitler was forced to withdraw his best troops from the eastern front and redeploy them. In addition, the Allies provided heavy vehicles that the Soviets desperately needed and were unable to manufacture themselves. It was not the resources of the Soviet Union that defeated Hitler but the resources of the West. In this provocative revisionist analysis of the war between Hitler and Stalin, Mosier provides a dramatic, vigorous narrative of events as he shows how most previous histories accepted Stalin’s lies and distortions to produce a false sense of Soviet triumph. Deathride is the real story of the Eastern Front, fresh and different from what we thought we knew."
