Introducing the Ford Thunderbird, a car that made its debut at the Detroit Auto Show on February 20, 1954. The first production car was available on September 9, 1954,...more and went on sale on October 22, 1954, as a 1955 model. It was an instant hit, with 3,500 orders placed in the first ten days of sale. This powerful vehicle came equipped with a Ford 292-cubic-inch OHV 292 Y-block V8 engine, which got 18 miles per gallon. It had aremovable fiberglass top as standard equipment, and a fabric convertible top as a commonly specified option. The car also featured four-way power seats and pushbutton interior door handles. Unique featuresincluded a telescoping steering wheel and a tachometer. Constructed using a body-on-frame technique with a version of the standard Ford design cut-down to a 102-inch wheelbase identical to the Corvette's, the Thunderbird was a rare domestic two-seater for the era.
