Rare French Paper Mache Doll, Laminated Cloth Body Attributed to Brouillet-Cacheleux 2500/3500

20" (51 cm.) Very firmly-constructed socket head of laminated cloth under nearly imperceptible wax, blue glass enamel eyes, brown all-around eyeshadow, arched brows, acce...morented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line, blushed cheeks, blonde mohair curly wig, hollowed body that is also of laminated cloth and with wooden-peg jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, defined fingers and thumbs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: circa 1865, attributed to Brouillet-Cacheleux who registered an 1861 design for this doll, specifically of the lightweight laminated cloth material. His concept was similar to the blown leather poupee body deposed by Clement of Paris in 1866. An article about these rare dolls by Dominique Pennegues is in Doll News, Spring, 2018. Value Points: very rare and most appealing doll of unique construction. Ex-collection Madeline Merrill, the doll is shown in her book, The Art of Dolls, page 148, and ex-collection Marilyn Parsons.

Condition: generally excellent, underside of two fingertips flaked, cloth portions of body may be recovered. Comments: Germany, circa 1860, the taufling baby inspired by the Japanese Ichimatsu doll introduced to the West during the mid-1800s International Expositions. Value Points: rare doll with wonderful body, especially modeling of legs and hips, great expression.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Martha Thompson, esteemed charter member of the NIADA, whose work was always created one-by-one, circa 1955. Value Points: superb portrait including not only the sculpted hair but also detailed porcelain limbs with four finger rings, painted blue garter and gilt painted shoes. The collection of Martha Thompson dolls in this auction have been in the collection of one owner for nearly 60 years, acquired directly from Connecticut couturier, Martha Yeske, who formed a relationship with Martha Thompson in the mid-1950s, and was commissioned to create costumes for the Thompson dolls. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: M. Thompson Anne Cleves '59. Germany, Wilhelm Strunz, circa 1905, the firm produced teddy bears and marketing techniques that were direct competition with Steiff, creating extensive litigation between the two firms and resulting in very limited numbers of Strunz bears being created, especially in this large size.
