Very Rare and Fine Early Wooden Doll with Exquisite Painting and Carving 5500/8500
Lot # 51 (Sale Order: 51 of 303)
12" (30 cm.) One-piece carved wooden head and torso with perfectly oval-shaped face and elongated throat, defined carved corset edge, carved ears with pierced ear holes, black painted hair with finely painted feathers and tendrils of curls arranged around the forehead, outlined and painted green/brown eyes, one-stroke curvy brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, blushed cheeks, closed mouth with center accent line, dowel jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, shapely lower legs with painted stockings and outlined yellow slippers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: early 1800s, acquired by its present owner from an original English estate where it had resided for two centuries; included with the doll is its original gown with exquisite embroidery. Value Points: very rare doll, its profile view as compelling as front view, in remarkable state of fine preservation, artistic painting and carving, rare petite size, and wonderful costume.
Very Fine Early Miniature Slant-Lid Desk with Ink Script Inscription 1100/1500

8 1/2" (22 cm.) Chestnut wooden slant-front desk with hinged front features three bottom drawers with incised line edging, wooden knobs, interior draw behind the lid, bracket feet and straight apron. There are wooden drawer pulls, bronze escutcheons, and a mother-of-pearl decoration accent on the outside lid. The inside of the lid has pencil inscription which is largely illegible but contains the name Theobold and the date 1820. Generally excellent, English, early 1800s.
American Salesman's Sample Tiger Maple Kitchen Cabinet 1200/1600

40" (102 cm.) h. x 24"w. x 11"d. Of finest maple with tiger-striped luxury graining, the cabinet features a 12-pane upper cabinet with double doors above a closed door cabinet base, and is enhanced with cherry inlaid escutcheons and pegging, According to a handwritten note included with the cabinet, it was purchased from Paul Reese of Dayton Ohio in 1989 who had bought it from the descendents of its 19th century maker, Robert McCaskey of Gallia County, Ohio. The availability of tiger maple wood was evidently a key asset of McCaskey, as a full size corner cupboard of tiger maple made by him is also known to exist. Fine original condition. Miniature American Cherry Wood Blanket Chest 500/800

12" (30 cm.) l. 6" h. The blanket chest is constructed of finest cherry wood, with beautiful grains and natural finish, constructed with dovetailed sides, shaped bracket feet, fitted lid edging, and original hardware and lock (no key). American, circa 1840, the quality of workmanship and wood suggests it origin as a salesman's sample by traveling cabinet maker, later put to play use as a nursery toy.
Leather-Bound Book "Queen Victoria's Dolls" by Francis Low, 1894 100/200

9" (23 cm.) x 11". The leather-bound book with rich embossed gilt decorations and title on the cover, and beautiful interior pages with delicate drawings of Queen Victoria's dolls, each garbed in original costumes made by her as a young girl, and with descriptions of their names and the social setting of each scene. Published by George Newnes of London, 1894. Excellent condition.
Outstanding 18th Century Miniature American Tavern Table 2500/3500

11" (28 cm.) l. 9 1/2" h. Elaborately carved tavern table features thick sturdy legs with scalloped details, a long dovetailed drawer which opens from either side, ogee-shaped table edge, rectangular table with two drop sides which, when raised by simple supports, forms into a circular table top which is decorated with inlay star and geometric designs. The table has previously been displayed at the Talbot County Historical Society Museum of Easton, Maryland. An outstanding and extremely rare early miniature furniture. Circa 1720.

All-wooden doll with one-piece carved head and torso, elongated slender throat, shapely torso, dowel-jointed wooden arms and legs, painted-over-gesso complexion, painted black hair with shaded ringlet curls framing the face and sculpted yellow tuck comb, earlobes pierced into head, painted blue eyes, painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, blushed cheeks and chin, spoon-shaped hands, orange painted flat shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1840. Condition: generally excellent, two baby fingers missing from lower knuckle. Comments: French, circa 1870, the poupee was presented at the doll boutique of Terrene, possibly commissioned exclusively for that shop. Pair, Outstanding German Bisque Busts of Boy and Girl in the Art Character Style 900/1300

Each bisque bust of child has distinctively sculpted facial features, the girl with long blonde ringlet curled lock and pink hair bow, with blue painted downcast eyes and shy smiling expression with painted teeth; and the boy with deeply sculpted short brown hair with brown side-glancing eyes and broad smiling expression with painted teeth; each with well-detailed costumes with painted and gilt accents. Condition: generally excellent, tiny flake on base of girl. Comments: Germany, probably Dresden, circa 1890.
