Very Rare and Fine Early Wooden Doll with Exquisite Painting and Carving 5500/8500

12" (30 cm.) One-piece carved wooden head and torso with perfectly oval-shaped face and elongated throat, defined carved corset edge, carved ears with pierced ear holes, black painted hair with finely painted feathers and tendrils of curls arranged around the forehead, outlined and painted green/brown eyes, one-stroke curvy brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, blushed cheeks, closed mouth with center accent line, dowel jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, shapely lower legs with painted stockings and outlined yellow slippers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: early 1800s, acquired by its present owner from an original English estate where it had resided for two centuries; included with the doll is its original gown with exquisite embroidery. Value Points: very rare doll, its profile view as compelling as front view, in remarkable state of fine preservation, artistic painting and carving, rare petite size, and wonderful costume....more

Very Fine Early Miniature Slant-Lid Desk with Ink Script Inscription 1100/1500

8 1/2" (22 cm.) Chestnut wooden slant-front desk with hinged front features three bottom drawers with incised line edging, wooden knobs, interior draw behind the lid, bracket feet and straight apron. There are wooden drawer pulls, bronze escutcheons, and a mother-of-pearl decoration accent on the outside lid. The inside of the lid has pencil inscription which is largely illegible but contains the name Theobold and the date 1820. Generally excellent, English, early 1800s....more

American Salesman's Sample Tiger Maple Kitchen Cabinet 1200/1600

Lot # 53 (Sale Order: 53 of 303)      

40" (102 cm.) h. x 24"w. x 11"d. Of finest maple with tiger-striped luxury graining, the cabinet features a 12-pane upper cabinet with double doors above a closed door cabinet base, and is enhanced with cherry inlaid escutcheons and pegging, According to a handwritten note included with the cabinet, it was purchased from Paul Reese of Dayton Ohio in 1989 who had bought it from the descendents of its 19th century maker, Robert McCaskey of Gallia County, Ohio. The availability of tiger maple wood was evidently a key asset of McCaskey, as a full size corner cupboard of tiger maple made by him is also known to exist. Fine original condition.
