French Oil Painting "Jeanne's Lesson" by Leon Caille in Gilt Wooden Frame 1200/1800

Lot # 214 (Sale Order: 218 of 303)      

10" (25 cm.) x 8 1/4" board. 14" x 12" framed. The oil painting on board depicts a homey scene of young lad seated on a ladder-back chair teaching an arithmetic lesson to Jeanne whose name is printed at the top of the slateboard which he holds. Jeanne stands attentively, her favorite doll dangling from her hand. The background scene features a fireplace and mantel, paintings on the wall and a curtained window. Signed Leon Caille in lower corner, and presented in original carved wooden frame with gilded finish. Excellent condition. The French artist, Leon Caille (1836-1907) was noted for his homey scenes of family life, with special attention to children scenes. The young lad has chalked the date 1877 on the slateboard, which is likely the date of this wonderful charming painting....more

Early French Musical Automaton "Fisherman with Windmill and Pond" by Phalibois 7500/11,000

Lot # 215 (Sale Order: 219 of 303)      

25" (64 cm.) A romantic countryside scene is arranged on a grassy covered rocky hillside on wooden base under a glass dome with painted background; a windmill is perched at the peak, and a pond and stone mill with water wheel at the base of the hill. There is a painted tin boat in the "pond" in which a paper-mache man is seated, and alongside are three ducks. When wound, the tin boat moves side-to-side as though being rowed, the man waves a stick at the ducks to frighten them away, while the small duck bobs his head up and down as though drinking from the pond, and the larger duck pivots back and forth as though swimming. Meanwhile, the water wheel revolves, the windmill turns, the glass waterfall appears to stream, and music plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well, repair to bottom back of glass dome. Comments: French, Phalibois, circa 1880. Value Points: a charming sentimental country scene with an exceptional number of activities; there are seven movements and two tunes....more

Early French Musical Automaton "Concert in the Garden" Phalibois of Paris, Under Dome 8000/11,000

26" (66 cm.) Arranged upon an ebonized wooden oval base, under a glass dome with painted scenic background is a paper-mache lady seated at an upright piano with faux-rosewooden finish, and a paper-mache gentleman with violin, his violin case at his side. A dimensional card paper background depicts a garden scene with patio wall. Each person has painted features, enamel eyes, slightly parted lips, teeth, mohair wig, carton torso, metal hands, and is wearing original delicate silk costume with gilded paper trim. When wound, the lady moves her fingers over the keyboard, turning her head from side-to-side as though following her finger movement, and occasionally nodding, while the gentleman strums the violin while turning the violin to and fro in a realistic manner, his head turning side-to-side synchronically. A peaceful garden scene is depicted under an arbor of flowers and leaves with hanging bird cage, centered by a bisque-head lady with large blue glass enamel eyes, painted features, closed mouth, pierced ears, wearing her traditional Normandy costume including elaborate coiffe. She stands behind a wooden ironing table, with baskets of fresh linens and potted flowers at her feet, holding a wooden-handled iron. When wound, the lady turns her head from side-to-side, and moves her hand forward and back as though ironing, all the while enjoying the garden scenes around her. Two musical tunes play. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (original music tune on the base). Comments: French, attributed to Phalibois who specialized in mechanical vignettes that romanticized scenes of daily life, circa 1870. Value Points: especially charming automaton in appealing smaller size, with wonderful scene and activity; the automaton is beautifully preserved with fresh scenery, and well-functioning music and mechanism....more
