The legendary doll collection of Samy Odin from the Musée de la Poupée of Paris is the subject of this one-person auction. Many of more than 400 dolls in the collection, mirroring doll history.

4 1/2" (11 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque torso, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, pen-jointed bisque arms and legs. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 4. Comments: for the French market, circa 1900. Value Points: the mignonette wears original metallic "chain" costume with metallic fringe trim, matching boots and feathered hat, leather belt and sword.
All-Original Bisque Fashion Lady, 1159, for French Market, Fairy Godmother Costume 1800/2600

Bisque socket head, brown glass sleep eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lower lashes, mohair lashes, slightly-modeled brows with feathered details and decorative glaze, accented nostrils, open mouth, outlined lips, four porcelain teeth, pierced ears, brunette human hair in long braids, French composition and wooden fully-jointed lady body with modeled bosom and waist, elongated limbs. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 1159 Simon & Halbig dep 9 1/2. Comments: Simon and Halbig bisque head on commission for SFBJ, circa 1910, the models were presented in their catalog as "Poupees Dames" wearing fashionable costumes; this present example, wearing her unique costume of Fairy Godmother, was likely a special commission costume. Value Points: very beautiful doll with lovely bisque, beautiful wig and lashes, impeccable original condition of body, and wearing superb original costume.
French Bisque Doll by Albert Marque, #5 of Limited Series, Trousseau, Suffragette 120,000/150,000

22" (56 cm.) Bisque socket head created with distinctive four-part mold allowing pronounced definition of facial structure especially at her temple and cheek bones, elongated slender throat that accentuates the plump lower cheeks and chin, softly rounded nose tip, hazel-brown glass paperweight eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted dark curly lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with solemn expression on the outlined lips, distinctively modeled pierced ears, original brunette mohair wig, original uniquely modeled body with elongated tapered-shape torso, wide hips, undefined waist, composition upper arms, bisque lower arms with bisque attached ball joints at the elbows, separately sculpted fingers, wide upper thighs, elongated lower legs with shapely calves, elongated narrow feet. Condition: generally excellent, one elbow ball joint is reglued with small missing piece, there is an original firing distinction on the forehead (under wig). Marks: A, Marque (incised signature of the artist) 5 (red ink number on the head) Mrs. Haverfield (pencil inscription on foot). Comments: France, circa 1916, designed by noted Parisian sculptor Albert Marque, as part of a movement to re-invigorate the French doll industry; the movement involved sculptors, porcelain firms, fashion designers and virtually the entire Parisian art community including the couture studio of Margaine-Lacroix which created the original costumes for the very limited series of these dolls, believed to be less than 100. This doll is #5 from the series, and was designed to honor the English suffragette, Mrs. Haverfield. In addition, the doll owns two further costumes, one an ivory silk gown bearing the original silk label of Margaine-Lacroix, with original blue silk cape and pearl trimmed purse, and the other a mauve silk and lace negligee. The doll was featured in an article "The Artful Dolls of Margaine-Lacroix" written by Samy Odin and appearing in the March 2013 issue of Antique Doll Collector. Value Points: the desirability of the doll, an aspect of its extraordinarily artistic sculpture, expression, and quality, is enhanced by its rarity, its early number 5 from the series, its additional original costumes, its Musee de la Poupee provenance and in this singular example of the Marque doll, its presentation as a woman of its time. Evelina Haverfield was a noted member of the British suffragette movement during the early years of 1900s. Historical accounts of her work appear in numerous online searches and printed books. Of particular interest regarding this present doll was her promotion of "Omne Tempus" all weather gear, described as "the ideal coat for town, country or Campaigning". The brown woolen ensemble worn by this present doll, a notable departure from other Margaine-Lacroix costumes for the Albert Marque doll, was clearly inspired by this style, just as Margaine-Lacroix was likely influenced by the growing suffragette movement in France and England.

Bisque socket head, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, brown painted lashes, brushstroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, open mouth with slightly-smiling expression, row of porcelain teeth, pierced ears, brunette mohair braided wig, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: SFBJ 238 Paris 4 (doll) Margaine-Lacroix, Boulevard Hausmann Paris (cloth label on costume) (original illegible paper label on costume). Comments: SFBJ, circa 1914, from a series of dolls in costumes inspired by the Ballet Russe created by Parisian couturiere Margaine-Lacroix, as presented in the original Paris and New York exhibitions of costumed dolls which featured both the exceptional Albert Marque doll and this character model of 238. This particular example represents a Russian peasant woman in traditional costume of the province of Samara, featuring a green satin dress with soutache embroidery and gilt medallion, sleeveless brocade tunic with fur edging, Cossack hat with gold beads, gold silk trousers, and unique brocade boots. Value Points: very rare and all-original model from the original Margaine-Lacroix exhibition, in Ballet Russe costume, and having her original silk label. The doll was featured in an article "The Artful Dolls of Margaine-Lacroix" by Samy Odin, in Antique Doll Collector, March 2013.
French Bisque Character, 238, by SFBJ, Original Traditional Costume by Margaine-Lacroix 2500/3500

Bisque socket head, blue glass sleep eyes, painted brown lashes, brushstroked and feathered brows, shaded nostrils, open mouth, four porcelain teeth, impressed dimples at lip corners, well defined chin, blonde mohair wig, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent, lining on dress is very frail. Marks: SFBJ 238 Paris 4. Comments: SFBJ, circa 1914, the doll was costumed in designs from the Parisian couturiere Margaine-Lacroix at that time, representing a traditional folklore style featuring a "High-waisted, multi-colored dress with a cream crepe apron under a green coat" (as described in an original inventory), and includes original high crown matching hat, and undergarments identical to the original undergarments worn by Albert Marque dolls. More background about the doll is cited in an article "The Artful Dolls of Margaine-Lacroix" by Samy Odin in Antique Doll Collector, March 2013. Value Points: all-original doll in extremely rare well-preserved original condition and costume, and with especially fine quality of bisque and painting.

18" (46 cm.) The child-sized wooden corner chair in the Chinese style has original black lacquer finish and is richly decorated with painted bird and floral designs with gold edging. Value points: especially beautiful example of the amber-complexioned doll with softly-blushed cheeks and artfully-painted brows, original body and body finish, wearing superb antique silk Asian costume with dragon and serpent embroidery, blue silk trousers, embroidered silk slippers with wooden heels, and elaborate hair ornaments and fan.
Collection of French All-Bisque Mignonettes in Original Box from Au Nain Bleu 900/1400

2 1/2" (6 cm.) Each of 12 all-bisque dolls has swivel head and jointing at shoulders and hips, painted facial features,mohair wig, blue or black painted boots. Condition: generally excellent, costume frail on one. Comments: French, circa 1900, the dolls were known as Lilliputians; appearing in French Etrennes catalogs as early as 1890, they continued in production until at least 1912 when they appeared in the SFBJ catalog of that year. Value Points: the precious little mignonettes are each wearing its original silk costume, mostly theatrical, highlighted by an exceptional pair of Polichinelle, and are preserved in their original presentation box with label of the prestigious Parisian toy store, Au Nain Bleu.

Marks: Bru Jne 5 (head) No. 5 Bru Jne (shoulders) Bebe Bru Bte SGDG, (original paper label on torso). Condition: generally excellent, body especially sturdy and fresh albeit some age spotting, bisque hands perfect. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, Chevrot epoch, circa 1885. Value Points: in pristine superb original condition, the very rare Asian model of Bru bebe wears its elaborate Bru-original gold silk kimono with floral, butterfly and bird embroidery, sash, original undergarments, stockings, brown leather shoes with silver buckles signed "Bru Jne Paris 5", and with original gold-plated jewelry including bracelet and fan-shaped earrings, brooch and hair ornament. In his book, Fascinating Dolls, Samy Odin relates that the doll had been donated by its original Paris owners to a fund-raising bazaar of the diocese of Paris, from where it was acquired by the Musee de la Poupee.

Comments: French, circa 1900, from the series of miniature dolls known as "Lilliputians", the dolls were offered in a variety of theatrical, historical, folkloric, fashionable, and these, exotic costumes. Value Points: the nine dolls are all-original, with various complexions, and wearing original exotic costumes.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Sie C 4 (incised) J. Steiner Bte SGDG Bourgouin (red ink lettering) (eyes also signed J. Steiner). Comments: Jules Steiner, circa 1885. Value Points: the very dear wide-eyed model has original body, body finish, wig, signed eyes, is wearing her original blue linen sailor costume, undergarments, woven hat, blue knit stockings, and leather shoes with silver medallion. The doll appeared in Fascinating Dolls by Samy Odin who described her bisque complexion as "particularly luminous".

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1850, the head is attributed to Andreas Voit for the French market. Value Points: wonderfully-preserved doll with original lustrous finish, original wig, very sturdy original body, and wearing exceptional white cotton cutwork costume of superb hand workmanship, laced detail at the back, and matching cutwork petticoat and pantalets, original slippers and gloves.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1840. Value Points: the doll wears multi-layered original costume and apron, and carries a 2 1/2" doll with paper mache head having sculpted red cap and moustache, all-wooden body with articulation at shoulders and hips, wearing original costume. Shown in Fascinating Dolls by Samy Odin, who described the dolls as having "remarkable attention to detail" with "handmade clothing that attests to the good taste and skill of a meticulous child".

Solid domed paper mache shoulder head with oval-shaped face and elongated throat, black enamel eyes, dark eyeliner, delicately-painted upper and lower lashes, arched brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, blushed cheeks, brunette hand-tied human hair wig over painted black pate, kid poupee body with tiny waist, stitched and separated fingers, gusset-jointing at hips. Condition: very good, few rubs on cheeks, original complexion and features, body original albeit weak with few repairs. Comments: French, circa 1840, attributed to Andreas Voit with original hand-stitched body. 25" (64 cm.) The mahogany cabinet has double glass doors at the front and is accented by spiral columns at each side; the shelved interior is lined with red velvet. Contained within the cabinet are various accessories including a miniature French double-face carriage clock in cast brass frame with porcelain faces (non-functioning), pair of porcelain miniature vases, and porcelain de Paris oval dish with lattice work sides and floral painting. Outstanding Antique Spanish Costume for Size 11 Bebe Jumeau 700/900

Of rose silk satin with overlay of black lace, the intricately constructed dress features a laced-front bodice, coat sleeves, rose silk interwoven ribbons, and rose cording at edges. A black velvet short vest is edged with gold braid and metallic drops, and there are black lace fingerless gloves, decorative tambourine, matching lace over silk shoes (one with Bebe Jumeau gilt lettered sole), and a superb black velvet hat with silk lining, braid trim, feather and silk bow. Excellent condition. French, for size 11 Bebe Jumeau, a superb costume with exceptional detail, circa 1885.
French White Pique Dress, Bonnet, Woven Socks, and Signed Jumeau Shoes for Size 11 Bebe 600/800

Of vertically-ribbed white pique, the dropped waist dress has a rounded cutwork collar and hem, two pockets at the waist sash, cuffs. Along with a beautiful woven bonnet decorated with garlands of silk rose buds, woven white socks, and cream satin shoes impressed "11 Bebe Jumeau Depose" on soles. Excellent condition. French, the costume is designed for Bebe Jumeau, size 11, circa 1888.
