Felt swivel head with amber-tinted complexion, pressed and painted facial features, narrow brown side-glancing eyes, black painted lashes and high curved brows, black upper eyeliner, accented nostrils, open mouth modeled in wide smile with row of painted teeth, coral lower lip with accent dots, black mohair wig arranged in high ponytail held by an applique felt band, muslin torso and legs, felt arms, fingers of right hand arranged to hold saber. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Lenci, the model appeared in the 1927/1928 Lenci catalog as model 556. Comments: Lenci, circa 1924, the doll was likely from the series of dolls shown in a photograph in their 1924 catalog titled "Carnaval de Venise", depicting an exhibit of Lenci salon "carnavel" dolls at the Magasin de Printemps of Paris that year. Arranged on a paper mache mossy ground is a beautifully-composed village scene, featuring a cottage with hand-painted details surmounted by a windmill and fronted by a waterwheel, and a tinplate well and pump in the yard which is tended by an all-bisque doll; animals and shrubs populate the yard. When wound, music plays, the windmill and the waterwheel turn, the little girl moves her arm up and down as though pumping water, and the glass spiral "water" twirls as though water is pouring from the pump. Cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted complexion and facial features, center-parted hair with painted wispy curls around the sides of her forehead, stitch-shaped ears and neck nape, outlined eye sockets, brown eyes with thin black outlines, lightly stroked brows, rounded nose, closed mouth with accent line between the lips, firmly stuffed body with stitch-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, defined applied thumbs, original sateen torso and upper limb cover, oil-painted hands and lower legs, bare feet, with two antique costumes (one of which is original) and with an early wooden ladder back arm chair. Condition: generally excellent, very light typical craquelure. Marks: Patented Nov. 4th 1873 (original paper label). Comments: circa 1875, Izannah Walker, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, her 1873 patent declared her purpose was to create a doll that is "easily kept clean and not apt to injure a young child which may fall upon it. It will preserve its appearance for a long time." An inventive and hardy New Englander, she "made dolls and doll furniture, tinkered with household gadgets, designed a parlor heater Ôthat beat Ben Franklins', raised canaries, dabbled in real estate and was looked upon with admiration by male contemporaries because of her skill with carpenters' tools..." according to an 1870s write-up in the Providence Bulletin. Value Points: deservedly the most sought-after American folk doll with fine artistry of painting especially of hair and eyes. The Izannah Walker doll has rightfully been compared to the celebrated American folk art canvas paintings of William Matthew Prior (1806-1873)....more

Posed in front of her lavishly-fitted dressing table with richly-draped gilt-accented lace curtains and framed mirror is a bisque-head lady with blue glass enamel eyes, delicately-painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with accent lines, pierced ears, elongated blonde mohair wig, bisque shoulder plate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms and wearing an original very luxurious silk gown with embroidered flowers, undergarments, and silk shoes. The dressing table is laden with various toiletries and accessories and she holds a powder puff in one hand and a mirror in the other. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Marks: (original two-tune label under table). Comments: Vichy, circa 1865. When wound and lever released, the lady lifts her head, turning side to side as though admiring herself, alternately powdering her nose and gazing into the hand mirror, while leaning forward which consequently emphasizes the embroidered detail of her gown; all the while music plays. Value Points: few examples of this extraordinary musical automaton exist; each known has been found with superb details such as these gilt-metal curtain accents, embroidered gown, and carved bone toiletry articles including fan, indicating its luxury creation....more
