Rare French Lithopane of Romantic Scene with Maker's Depose Signature 400/600

6" (15 cm.) x 4 1/2". The bisque lithopane with raised design of a courting couple is designed to hold to the light for the strong image to be revealed, Stamped in red on the back "M.Ruge Depose P.R. Bte SGDG". Excellent condition. Very rare to find. French, circa 1885.

Grand and Extremely Rare Italian Felt Character Doll "Kigan" by Lenci 5000/7500

35" (89 cm.) Felt swivel head with amber-tinted complexion, pressed and painted facial features, narrow brown side-glancing eyes, black painted lashes and high curved brows, black upper eyeliner, accented nostrils, open mouth modeled in wide smile with row of painted teeth, coral lower lip with accent dots, black mohair wig arranged in high ponytail held by an applique felt band, muslin torso and legs, felt arms, fingers of right hand arranged to hold saber. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Lenci, the model appeared in the 1927/1928 Lenci catalog as model 556. Value Points: extremely rare Lenci with superb modeling unique to this doll, has high cheekbones and impressed dimples, and is wearing original costume of vividly embroidered and appliqued felt including yellow stockings under trousers, breastplate, and carrying a wooden saber with Japanese lettering.
Italian Felt Harlequin by Lenci from Venetian Carnival Series for Parisian Department Store 800/1200

Slender adult doll with pressed and painted facial features, darkened complexion, brown side-glancing eyes, coral-shaded lips, elongated body with stitched-on costume in vibrant harlequin pattern of pink, fuschia, black and green felt with jointed arms and hips, felt ruffled collar, black felt cap and mask, and wooden-heeled felt shoes. Condition: very good, some fading. Comments: Lenci, circa 1924, the doll was likely from the series of dolls shown in a photograph in their 1924 catalog titled "Carnaval de Venise", depicting an exhibit of Lenci salon "carnavel" dolls at the Magasin de Printemps of Paris that year. Value Points: rare early model with unique ruffled collar, heeled shoes, and carrying a painted baton.

Felt swivel head with pressed and painted facial features, pointy chin, large stitched ears, "O"-shaped googly down-glancing eyes, side-stroked large brows, red nose, angled mouth, clown decorations, black felt cap, elongated slender torso and arms that are bent at the elbows, very slim legs with elongated black felt feet. Condition: very good, few moth holes. Comments: Lenci, model 146, appearing in an early catalog, circa 1924. Value Points: rarely found unique model with great face, oversized feet, and wearing original checkered pants, ruffled collars and cuffs, pom-pom trimmed hat, pants and shoes.

French Musical Automaton "Little Girl in Village Scene" 6000/8500

21" (53 cm.) h. 18"l. Arranged on a paper mache mossy ground is a beautifully-composed village scene, featuring a cottage with hand-painted details surmounted by a windmill and fronted by a waterwheel, and a tinplate well and pump in the yard which is tended by an all-bisque doll; animals and shrubs populate the yard. When wound, music plays, the windmill and the waterwheel turn, the little girl moves her arm up and down as though pumping water, and the glass spiral "water" twirls as though water is pouring from the pump. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: French, circa 1885. Value Points: appealing rustic scene with artistic detail of background, four simultaneous realistic movements, fine music.

6" (15 cm.) The copper-coated tinplate wash tub has a hinged lid and unusual interior with wooden-handled apparatus designed to assist in the washing process, with faucet. Along with a folding wooden ironing board, cast iron flat iron, wooden bucket and scrub-board. Generally excellent. The lid is labeled with raised illegible lettering. Circa 1890.
American Wooden Folk Toy "Churning Butter" with Pull-String Movement 300/500

4" (10 cm.) A stylized simplistic wooden carving of two women posed on either side of a butter churn, each with dowel-jointed waist and pin-jointed arms. When the string hidden below the platform is pulled, the women bend forward and back as though churning the butter. Excellent condition. American, mid-1800s, the toy is charming not only its well-conceived action, but also for its artful simple carving.
Extremely Rare Small Size of the American Cloth Folk Doll by Izannah Walker 11,000/14,000

All cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features and hair depicting a young lad, shaded short brown hair with a row of ringlet curls at the top forehead and at the nape of neck, outlined eye sockets, shaded brown eyes with pronounced pupils, accented nostrils, shaped ears with outlined details, tiny closed mouth, sateen torso cover, oil-painted lower limbs with defined fingers and painted black ankle boots and red-striped stockings, antique costume (alternate jacket included). Condition: very good, original complexion and painting of features, albeit craquelure. Comments: Izannah Walker, circa 1870. Value Points: very rare small size of the iconic American doll, with rare painting of stockings, and owning his own early wooden toy Punch and Judy theatre with simple back and forth movement by side lever.

Cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted complexion and facial features, center-parted hair with painted wispy curls around the sides of her forehead, stitch-shaped ears and neck nape, outlined eye sockets, brown eyes with thin black outlines, lightly stroked brows, rounded nose, closed mouth with accent line between the lips, firmly stuffed body with stitch-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, defined applied thumbs, original sateen torso and upper limb cover, oil-painted hands and lower legs, bare feet, with two antique costumes (one of which is original) and with an early wooden ladder back arm chair. Condition: generally excellent, very light typical craquelure. Marks: Patented Nov. 4th 1873 (original paper label). Comments: circa 1875, Izannah Walker, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, her 1873 patent declared her purpose was to create a doll that is "easily kept clean and not apt to injure a young child which may fall upon it. It will preserve its appearance for a long time." An inventive and hardy New Englander, she "made dolls and doll furniture, tinkered with household gadgets, designed a parlor heater Ôthat beat Ben Franklins', raised canaries, dabbled in real estate and was looked upon with admiration by male contemporaries because of her skill with carpenters' tools..." according to an 1870s write-up in the Providence Bulletin. Value Points: deservedly the most sought-after American folk doll with fine artistry of painting especially of hair and eyes. The Izannah Walker doll has rightfully been compared to the celebrated American folk art canvas paintings of William Matthew Prior (1806-1873).

Bisque shoulder head with very plump rounded face, painted down-glancing blue eyes with darker iris rims, pronounced glaze on lower eyes, heavy eyelids, thick black eyeliner, painted all-around lashes, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with pale accented lips, brunette human hair over cork pate, shapely kid poupee body with gusset-jointing at elbows, hips and knees, stitched and separated fingers. Condition: generally excellent, tiny firing flaw at lower left shoulder plate, body is not original. Comments: Adelaide Huret, circa 1860. Value Points: an especially beautiful example whose eye glaze and heavy eyelids lend a fine dreamy look to the face, lovely bisque and painting, and wearing antique brown taffeta gown with fringe trim, blouse, undergarments, socks, shoes, and a splendid bonnet.
French Musical Automaton "Lady at the Toilette Table", Vichy, Original Costume 12,000/18,000

24" (61 cm.) to top of mirror. Posed in front of her lavishly-fitted dressing table with richly-draped gilt-accented lace curtains and framed mirror is a bisque-head lady with blue glass enamel eyes, delicately-painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with accent lines, pierced ears, elongated blonde mohair wig, bisque shoulder plate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms and wearing an original very luxurious silk gown with embroidered flowers, undergarments, and silk shoes. The dressing table is laden with various toiletries and accessories and she holds a powder puff in one hand and a mirror in the other. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Marks: (original two-tune label under table). Comments: Vichy, circa 1865. When wound and lever released, the lady lifts her head, turning side to side as though admiring herself, alternately powdering her nose and gazing into the hand mirror, while leaning forward which consequently emphasizes the embroidered detail of her gown; all the while music plays. Value Points: few examples of this extraordinary musical automaton exist; each known has been found with superb details such as these gilt-metal curtain accents, embroidered gown, and carved bone toiletry articles including fan, indicating its luxury creation.
