Standing upon a patterned-velvet covered base is a bisque-head doll with amber brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, lushly-painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with upturned lip corners, outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. When wound, music plays, the girl turns her head side to side and nods; as she nods she simultaneously lifts the little bisque doll to her lips as though to kiss it, and then alternately lifts the mirror to gaze into it. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 4 (doll) (original paper tune label under base listing one waltz). Wonderful American Folk Art Mechanical Toy Theatre with Dancing Figure 2000/3000

15" (38 cm.) A wooden box is designed with a surmounted set-back theatre-like cabinet which, behind glass, features an amusing Punch and Judy scene with Punch hiding inside a barrel of ale, edged by die-cut paper leaves which are repeated in three bottom glass windows. Posed upon the lower cabinet is a carved wooden black-painted figure with horse-like head, black bead eyes, wooden human-like hands and feet, and wears original red woolen coat with velvet trim, black velvet cap, and holds a flag. The box contains a simple wooden mechanism which, when wound, causes the horse-human to dance about, and the theatre scene to spring to action: Judy moves forward and back, Punch rises and lowers from the ale barrel as a third person attacks him with a saber. The mechanism is designed to create various accompanying noises including clacking and bell. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: American, mid-1800s. Rare 1866 American Patented Doll Head with Multi-Faces by Dominico Checkeni 1200/1500

Lot # 68 (Sale Order: 68 of 354)      

7" (18 cm.) h. 10" circ. at nose. Being a shoulder head of light wood or wood composite with attached sculpted long ringlet curls and two rows of beads at the throat; with sculpted hollow-opening for face to allow one of four faces which are sculpted on the interior wooden form to be revealed. The faces, with deeply-sculpted features having natural wood finish, rotate on a horizontal rod, and include smiling, sleeping, grimacing, and laughing expressions. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Dominico Checkeni patented the design in 1866, patent number 52782, describing his invention as "Fancy Doll" and noting that his invention is "making the dolls' head with four faces and suspending it in the wig-frame in such a manner that the head may be revolved vertically, so as to being either of the four faces in front at pleasure". The patent was later re-assigned to Georg N. Thompson of New Haven, Connecticut. Another example of this patented head with variations of design is in The Strong Museum, and shown in The Collector's Encyclopedia of Dolls by Coleman, page 239. Value Points: few examples are known to exist of this early American patented doll....more
