Seated upon a paper mache donkey with flocked-flannel finish, brown glass eyes, and nodding hinged head, and with attached harness and flannel blanket is St. Nicholas with paper mache head, painted features, white fur beard and moustache, and with paper mache carton torso, black boots, and hands, classic red flannel hooded jacket, blue flannel pants, his left hand holding the donkey reins, and his right arm holding a feather tree. Rare French Musical Automaton "The Schoolroom Dunce" by Gustav Vichy 8000/11,000

21" (53 cm.) Seated upon a wooden bench is a young lad with paper mache head, deeply-scowling crying expression, brown glass eyes, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs in seated pose, hinge-jointing at left knee, metal upper right arm, bisque lower arms, and with an attached dunce cap with tall ears. A basket sits at his side with bread and napkins, and he holds a book in one hand and a cloth handkerchief in the other; and is dressed in raggedy silk and velvet school costume. When wound, his head turns side to side, his arm lifts the handkerchief to his face, and now and then, he nods, kicks his left foot, and his dunce cap ears flap up and down, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism slightly sluggish, chip on left upper arm (under sleeve). Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1890. French Musical Automaton "Lady at her Needlework" by Roullet et Decamps 5500/8500

19" (48 cm.) Seated on a wooden chair behind a wooden needlepoint frame is a bisque-headed doll with blue glass paperweight inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with shaded lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig with long braids, carton torso and legs posed seated, metal upper arms, composition forearms, and wearing silk gown with woolen shawl. Condition: very good, music and mechanism function well, left arm works willfully. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 5 (head). Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1890, the model appeared in the catalog of that firm as model 309, named "Tapisseuse". When wound, music plays, the doll lifts her head, turns and nods. Her fingers work busily over the needlework on frame adding stitches to the message "Bon Joyeaux Noel" which she is weaving onto the canvas. 13" (33 cm.) h. 11" l. base. 6" dolls. Arranged upon a wooden base with lithographed paper cover to simulate garden grass is a wire-framed arbor with silk flowers and leaves, under which are posed three bisque head dolls at a tea party. Each doll has bisque head, glass inset eyes, open mouth, mohair wig, wooden lower limbs and original costume. Standing at the back is the chef, holding a tray with cake, while two dolls are seated, holding pewter tea cups. When handwound, merry music plays, and the chef passes the tray from right to left as though serving, while the dolls lift their tea cups up and down. Condition: generally excellent.
