All stockinette cloth doll with stitch-shaped facial features depicting a plump-faced child, oil-painted hair, complexion and facial features, light brown ha...moreir with swirled curls, deeply-defined eye sockets and eye lids, shaded blue/brown eyes, rounded nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth with primly-set lips, double chin, defined blushed ears, stitch-jointing at shoulders and hips, oil-painted lower legs with defined knees and lower arms and hands with unusual curled fingers, antique baby dress, undergarments, stockings and shoes. Condition: fair/good, original finish albeit typical craquelure and complexion fading. Comments: Martha Wellington, of Massachusetts, who patented the doll in 1883; the intricate construction of the doll and its great scarcity today are indicative of very limited production at the time. Value Points: very distinctive construction with compelling presence of the rare American 19th century doll.

Condition: generally excellent, few very rubs on chin and limbs. Marks: Columbian Doll Emma E. Adams Oswego Centre N.Y. (stamp on torso). Comments: the cottage industry dolls of Emma Adams were presented at the Chicago International Exposition ("Columbian Exposition") of 1892 wherein they were awarded the Gold Medal, the first American doll to win this international award. Value Points: especially fine artistic painting on the rare signed doll, with original body and wearing original dress and bonnet. The doll bears several blue ribbon awards including 1989 Doll Collectors of America award and ephemera from the 1892 Columbian Exposition including a commemorative booklet with photographs of each exhibition building, softpaste pin tray with image, two cast metal souvenir pieces, and a wonderful stoneware crock with blue design indicating "Manufactured by the Central N.Y. Pottery, Ithaca N.Y."

Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (1883-1979), student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, was considered a leader in the Charleston Renaissance art movement. The Vargas was dolls were created in New Orleans, early 1900s, depicting various neighborhood peoples in daily activities.
