French Paper Mache Pull-Toy Bull-Dog on Wheels 1100/2100

18" (46 cm.) The paper mache bull-dog with well-defined musculature and overall flocked finish, is posed eagerly, with loosely-nodding head, collar and ruff, brown glass eyes, upright ears, and hinged jaw which when open reveals his ferocious teeth. Tiny wheels are hidden below this feet and when he is pulled along by the original attached chain, he opens and closes his mouth, while growling. Condition: generally excellent. Rare and Beautiful All-Original French Bisque Bebe with Surprise 6500/8500

19" (48 cm.) Standing upon a patterned-velvet wooden base is a young girl with bisque head, brown glass paperweight inset eyes, painted curly lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing an original elaborate silk costume and bonnet, with iron rod hidden at her torso which supports a wicker basket upon which is a large paper mache egg; the basket and egg are seemingly supported by the red silk ribbons held from her hands. When wound, she nods her head, and then turns side to side while alternately lifting the hankie she holds, and then lifting the lid of the egg to reveal a baby bird which seems to awake and then flits back and forth. Condition: generally excellent, some frailty to original costume, mechanism and music function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 4 (head) Barbe Bleu 1 air (original paper label on base). French Bisque Automaton "The Butterfly Girl" by Leopold Lambert 5500/7500

19" (48 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a bisque-head girl with blue glass paperweight inset eyes, painted curly lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, maroon woolen dress with wide lace collar, matching shoes and stockings, and elaborate wide-brimmed bonnet; holding a butterfly net with attached butterfly in her right hand, and seemingly holding a red silk umbrella in her left hand (which is actually imbedded in the base to connect with a hidden wire on which is another butterfly). When wound, music plays, the girl turns her head side to side, nods and waves the butterfly net; meanwhile the butterfly at the parasol flits back and forth. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 4 (head) L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890. Value Points: a charming automaton with beautiful costume and rare parasol accessory, delightful pastoral activity with movement and music that function well.
French Bisque Bebe "Mon Tresor" by Henri Rostal with Candy Container Body 800/1000

12" (30 cm.) Bisque socket head, bright blue glass inset eyes, painted facial features, open mouth, four porcelain teeth, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, one-piece cone-shaped carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Mon Tresor 1. Comments: bisque head by Henri Rostal, circa 1895, wearing original red cotton dress with silk ribbon trim which covers the hollow carton torso; a removable lid at the skirt base allows access to the candy container interior. Value Points: wonderful candy container doll, likely created on commission for luxury Parisian candy shop.

8 1/2" (22 cm.) A paper mache lamb with wooden legs has painted eyes and mouth, tin horns, and is lavishly covered with thick white wool, posed standing upon a wooden platform with four wooden wheels. Generally excellent. French, circa 1900.
All-Original French Mechanical Toy "Little Girl in Cart" with Nodding Head Donkey 1200/1600

10" (25 cm.) Seated in a woven donkey cart with metal spoken wheels is a bisque head girl with blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, kid body, wire upper arms, metal hands, wearing original rose silk satin gown with lace Normandy coiffe. The cart is being pulled by a paper mache donkey with black bead eyes, nodding attached head, leather harness, and one small wheel beneath. When wound, the cart moves forward, and the little girl moves her body back and forth as though urging the nodding head donkey forward. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: attributed to Vichy, circa 1880. Value Points: the enchanting toy is perfectly preserved, stored in its original box from Au Bon Marche.

Condition: generally excellent, body repainted. Marks: Bru Jne R 9. Comments: Maison Bru during the Girard epoch, circa 1895. Value Points: beautiful ivory bisque with lovely painting of features, rare double row of tiny teeth, beautiful antique dotted Swiss costume, undergarments, ruffled bonnet, stockings, and leather shoes.

The lamb is mounted upon a wooden platform with metal wheeled base. Generally excellent. Stamped label on base "made in Belgium". Circa 1900, wonderful grand size of the well-preserved toy.

Value Points: stunning beauty achieved by superb sculpting and finest bisque with artistic painting, finest state of preservation excepting the left hand, wearing beautiful antique cashmere and silk frock, with undergarments, leather shoes, stockings, ruffled crepe de chine bonnet, and carrying fine kid gloves.
Luxurious French Carved Wooden Presentation Box as a Royal Coach 2500/3500

22" (56 cm.) l. 13"h. Of carved wood with large spoked wheels centering the standing perch for the royal guardsmen, and two small spoked wheels in the front centered by the driver's seat. The coach has elaborate shaping of doors and windows, each with beveled glass, with door on one side only, and with sculpted design of crown on the door and at the center of the roof. The door opens to a red silk and velvet lined interior with tufting on the seats. The degree of sculpting and rich design indicates luxury production, likely as a presentation box for a luxurious gift, designed to be later used as decoration, for example as accessory for doll exhibit. Excellent condition, French, 1885.
Charming Petite French Mechanical Toy "Young Lady with Flowers" by Vichy 4000/5000

10" (25 cm.) Standing upon a tinplate three-wheeled platform is a bisque-head doll with blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes, feathered brows, closed mouth with accent line between the lips, sculpted detail of hair around the edge of face under blonde mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, metal hands. When wound, the platform moves forward and in circles, her head turns from side to side, and her right arm moves up and down. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Comments: Vichy, circa 1865. Value Points: the charming little toy is wearing her original silk costume in rich teal blue and magenta.
All-Original French Amber Bisque Poupee with Elaborate Costume and Bisque Arms 3500/4500

13" (33 cm.) Amber-tinted bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, brown glass inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, black painted lashes, curved one-stroke brows, two painted beauty marks, closed mouth with center accent line, very firm poupee body with gusset jointing at hips and knees, kid upper arms, and amber-tinted bisque arms to above the elbows. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 1. Comments: French, circa 1867, the doll was likely created to appeal to foreign visitors at the 1867 Paris International Exposition. Value Points: an outstanding doll, rare at its time, and virtually unfindable today in this perfectly preserved original costume of elaborately draped and ornamented silks and brocade including wrapped turban, bracelet, ankle bracelets, pearls, and having two beauty marks on exquisite complexion.
French Paper Mache "Monkey Marquis" as Harpist Attributed to Roullet & Decamps 8000/12,000

18" (46 cm.) Seated on the edge of velvet-covered box with metallic fringe edge is a figure presented as an aristocratic Monkey Marquis, having paper mache head with shaded complexion, brown glass eyes, hinged jaw with row of lower teeth and two upper fangs, white mohair wig, carton torso and legs in seated pose, wire upper arms, paper mache hands. The Marquis is attached to a beautifully carved wooden harp with gilt and cobalt blue painting, and he is costumed elegantly as an aristocrat, with silver lorgnette, in rich silk and lace with brass buttons, and with bicorn hat, pocket watch, black stockings, and shoes. When wound, he nods and turns his head, blinks his eyes, chatters by opening and closing his mouth, and plays the harp with both hands, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1880, attributed to Roullet & Decamps. Value Points: wonderful presentation of the charming automaton in beautifully preserved condition.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 1159 Simon & Halbig S&H 5. Comments: Simon and Halbig, circa 1915. Value Points: the "new style" lady was designed to wear the "new style" flapper costumes, with distinctively-shaped body.

Including black fur hat with wide upturned brims edged with black leather which forms into a dainty bow at the side; a lavishly draped gold velvet turban with silk faille lining; a loosely woven green net bonnet that is covered voluminously with colorful white silk flowers tinged with yellow, and green silk leaves; and a draped turban of vibrant metallic colors with a large bow tie at the back neck which appears to capture the draped fabric, and with red silk faille lining. Excellent condition. Each has the label of "Christian Dior Chapeaux, Paris, New York". Circa 1940s/1950s.

Including a black woven hat with flat top and very wide upturned side brims edged with a 1" band of black patent leather with large bow at one side; a cap comprised of black velvet on one half and pie-shaped white leather segments on the other half, with a wide black velvet band and bow, and with black taffeta lining; a straw boater-style bonnet with black patent leather and red silk faille bands, black patent leather edging on the brim, black facial veil, and two attachment combs; and a densely woven black bonnet with upturned brims and rich lacquer finish. Each with the cloth label of Michael Terre of Southern California, and along with two labeled Michael Terre hat boxes. Excellent condition. 1950s/1960s.

Comprising a wire-framed cap lavishly-covered with silk poppies and green leaves; a similar model with variation of flowers, this having red and pink roses; a richly wrapped froth of pink tulle; a black embroidered tulle cap composed of two graduated size bows, and with extended black velvet bows at the back; two similar caps, one of white tulle, and one of ivory tulle; a gold metallic hair crown decorated with stiffened gold cloth flowers; and a wire-framed cap decorated all-over with red carnations and white flowers, with a red taffeta bow at the back. Each with cloth label of Norman Paulvin. Excellent condition. Circa 1940s/1950s.

Comprising a black fur hat with upturned brim that is decorated with red, green, taupe and white feathers, the hat form itself signed "Helios made in Italy"; rounded top straw woven bonnet with bowl-shaped upturned sides of graduated width, having ivory silk faille brim edging and matching band with bow, with two comb attachments; a nearly matching black woven bonnet except having flattened top; and a double layer loosely woven flat-brimmed bonnet with blue velvet band and streamers and a narrow brim lavishly covered with colorful vibrant wildflowers, with comb attachment. Each has the original cloth label "Jan Leslie Custom Design", and included is an original labeled hat box. Excellent condition. Circa 1940s.
