The paper mache bull-dog with well-defined musculature and overall flocked finish, is posed eagerly, with loosely-nodding head, collar and ruff, brown glass eyes, upright ears, and hinged jaw which when open reveals his ferocious teeth. Rare and Beautiful All-Original French Bisque Bebe with Surprise 6500/8500

19" (48 cm.) Standing upon a patterned-velvet wooden base is a young girl with bisque head, brown glass paperweight inset eyes, painted curly lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing an original elaborate silk costume and bonnet, with iron rod hidden at her torso which supports a wicker basket upon which is a large paper mache egg; the basket and egg are seemingly supported by the red silk ribbons held from her hands. When wound, she nods her head, and then turns side to side while alternately lifting the hankie she holds, and then lifting the lid of the egg to reveal a baby bird which seems to awake and then flits back and forth. Condition: generally excellent, some frailty to original costume, mechanism and music function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 4 (head) Barbe Bleu 1 air (original paper label on base). French Bisque Automaton "The Butterfly Girl" by Leopold Lambert 5500/7500

19" (48 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a bisque-head girl with blue glass paperweight inset eyes, painted curly lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, maroon woolen dress with wide lace collar, matching shoes and stockings, and elaborate wide-brimmed bonnet; holding a butterfly net with attached butterfly in her right hand, and seemingly holding a red silk umbrella in her left hand (which is actually imbedded in the base to connect with a hidden wire on which is another butterfly). When wound, music plays, the girl turns her head side to side, nods and waves the butterfly net; meanwhile the butterfly at the parasol flits back and forth. Condition: generally excellent. All-Original French Mechanical Toy "Little Girl in Cart" with Nodding Head Donkey 1200/1600

10" (25 cm.) Seated in a woven donkey cart with metal spoken wheels is a bisque head girl with blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, kid body, wire upper arms, metal hands, wearing original rose silk satin gown with lace Normandy coiffe. The cart is being pulled by a paper mache donkey with black bead eyes, nodding attached head, leather harness, and one small wheel beneath. When wound, the cart moves forward, and the little girl moves her body back and forth as though urging the nodding head donkey forward. Condition: generally excellent. Luxurious French Carved Wooden Presentation Box as a Royal Coach 2500/3500

22" (56 cm.) l. 13"h. Of carved wood with large spoked wheels centering the standing perch for the royal guardsmen, and two small spoked wheels in the front centered by the driver's seat. The coach has elaborate shaping of doors and windows, each with beveled glass, with door on one side only, and with sculpted design of crown on the door and at the center of the roof. The door opens to a red silk and velvet lined interior with tufting on the seats. The degree of sculpting and rich design indicates luxury production, likely as a presentation box for a luxurious gift, designed to be later used as decoration, for example as accessory for doll exhibit. French Paper Mache "Monkey Marquis" as Harpist Attributed to Roullet & Decamps 8000/12,000

18" (46 cm.) Seated on the edge of velvet-covered box with metallic fringe edge is a figure presented as an aristocratic Monkey Marquis, having paper mache head with shaded complexion, brown glass eyes, hinged jaw with row of lower teeth and two upper fangs, white mohair wig, carton torso and legs in seated pose, wire upper arms, paper mache hands. The Marquis is attached to a beautifully carved wooden harp with gilt and cobalt blue painting, and he is costumed elegantly as an aristocrat, with silver lorgnette, in rich silk and lace with brass buttons, and with bicorn hat, pocket watch, black stockings, and shoes. When wound, he nods and turns his head, blinks his eyes, chatters by opening and closing his mouth, and plays the harp with both hands, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1880, attributed to Roullet & Decamps. Value Points: wonderful presentation of the charming automaton in beautifully preserved condition....more
