Pair, Extremely Rare Early Venetian Carved Wooden Court Dolls in Original Costumes 4500/7500

15" (38 cm.) Each with carved wooden socket head, angular facial shape with strongly defined features, blue glass inset eyes, painted richly blushed complexion, strongly outlined eyes with dark eye shadow, painted brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, elaborately arranged blonde mohair wigs in classic styles, carved wooden torso, defined waist, iron pin jointing of hips and knees, cloth upper arms with carved wooden hands and well-defined fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Venetian court dolls, circa 1780. Value Points: the extremely rare dolls with highly expressive facial carving enhanced by original painting have original wigs, and are wearing (frail) original costumes in the late 18th century Venetian court style.
Three French Silk Sachets with Embroidered Scenes 600/900

Each of fine silk with padded silk lining and cord edging, including unusual design of dancing Columbine in ribbon work and vivid silk embroidery, another with well-detailed floral design, and the third with a dainty embroidery of flower basket framed by a garland of colorful wildflowers. Generally excellent, some light spotting on Columbine sachet. French, circa 1890.
French Parlor Novelty "Petit Jeu Parisien" as Wonderful Candy Container 300/500

5" (13 cm.) x 5". The heavy card stock box with rose paper cover and gilt lettering on the lid, opens to reveal a well-fitted interior containing a small parlor game and nine individual tiny boxes once containing candies, each with a lithographed design of children at play. The interior of the lid bears the label of the renowned Parisian candy store Debauve & Gallais. Excellent condition except lacking tiny game beads. French, circa 1880.
Rare and Fine French Silk Costume for Bebe Jumeau 1100/1500

For size 9 or 10 Bebe Jumeau. The coral silk jacket dress is constructed with elaborate lace flouncing at the center panel above a box-pleated triangle, with full box-pleated skirt and lappets at the sides and back, hook and eye back closure. Along with ruffled lace at the sleeves and all-around cording and soutache. Included is a matching bonnet with elaborate lace flounces at the back decorated by lace ruffles and green silk ribbons. Excellent condition. The workshops of Ernestine Jumeau introduced wonderful and new timely fashions for Bebe Jumeau each season, this dress and bonnet being an example. Circa 1886.

Doll-Sized French Candy Box in the Shape of a Valise 300/500

7" (18 cm.) l. The firm-sided "valise" with soft kidskin tan cover hinges open at the center top and folds down at each side to reveal the paper-lined interior, having silk-wrapped handles, decorated lavishly with tarnished brass studs overall, and with applied name "Boissier" in art nouveau lettering. The valise originally served as a luxury candy box, and is suitably sized for display with bebes. French, circa 1890, the famed Parisian chocolatier, on the Avenue Victor Hugo was founded in 1827, and was noted for luxurious presentation of their candies.

Oil-painted canvas in rich shaded browns and greens depicts a very charming mischievous girl with impish smile, long flowing brown hair with blue hair bow, wearing a green dress with wide lace collar, holding her favorite doll, named Bamboula, with rich brown complexion and striped costume. The painting "Lucie et Bamboula" is signed by the artist, P. Robinet, and dated 1892. Excellent condition, stretched on original board. French, 1892.

Deluxe French Sewing Menage for Young Child with Bisque Doll, in Original Box 1100/1500

23" (58 cm.) doll. 24" x 28" box. A wooden box with paper lithographed cover and image depicting two little girls sewing has well-fitted interior centered by a bisque-head doll with brown glass inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, open mouth, four porcelain teeth, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, composition body jointed at shoulders and hips, wearing original muslin chemise. Along with the doll is a child's tin toy sewing machine, numerous bolts of fabric with original blue silk ties, bone-carved sewing tools, scissors, spools of thread, and sundry. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: G.K. 44-30. Comments: doll by Gebruder Kuhnlenz, the boxed menage of sewing ephemera was offered in Etrennes catalogs of Parisian department stores, circa 1890, designed to inspire young girls in needlework. Value Points: fine original state of preservation of the rare needlework menage.
Deluxe Silk Musical Candy Box with Doll Cornucopia 800/1100

14" (36 cm.) x 9 1/2". The wooden-framed candy box with bombe-shaped sides has ivory silk covering with painted designs and an attached silk cornucopia with pleated edging and silk bows from which is emerging a bisque baby head with brown glass eyes and lace ruffled bonnet. The box opens to a paper-lined interior, has mother-of-pearl escutcheon, lock and key, and brass feet. A keywind music box is operated from beneath. Excellent condition. Circa 1915, the box had original purpose as a deluxe presentation or candy box.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Germany JDK 260. Comments: Kestner, circa 1918. Value Points: delightful wide-eyed toddler with original wig, body, body finish, original lace costume and mohair wrap, shoes and socks.
Distinctive French Glass-Eyed Child Mannequin with Detachable Head and Arms 700/900

16" (41 cm.) Of heavy chalk material, the figure depicts a young child with sculpted hair and curly forehead lock, defined rosy ears, inset blue glass eyes, painted features, and closed smiling mouth. The head and torso are united by tie strings at the mid-chest, and the arms attach by a hidden locking system. The bottom torso is structured as a jar with base, suggesting that its original purpose may have been designed for use as a candy container, although its original use as a store mannequin is also a possibility. Generally excellent, French, circa 1910, wonderful expression and painting, glass eyes.
French Bisque Character, 251, by SFBJ, Original Trunk with Trousseau, Marguerite Simon 2000/3000

Bisque socket head, blue glass sleep eyes, painted curly lashes, short feathered brows, accented nostrils, open mouth, two upper teeth, tongue, brunette mohair bobbed wig, French composition and wooden fully jointed toddler body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: SFBJ 251 Paris 4 (head) Fabrication SFBJ Paris (body). Comments: SFBJ, circa 1917. Value Points: fine original state of the doll which is presented in her original layered French multi-layered trunk containing three dresses, night shirt, cape, bibs, undergarments, original shoes, and, notably, a sampler with the child owner's name "Marguerite Simon" embroidered in red, alphabet, numbers, and the date 1916-1917.
Splendid French Mechanical Toy "Little Girl with Doll on Swing" by Vichy 4000/5500

13" (33 cm.) h. 14" l. Standing upon a tin three-wheeled platform is a bisque-head doll with large blue glass eyes, delicately painted facial features, closed mouth with accented lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing lavish original silk costume; along with a metal-framed swing decorated with garland of leaves and red silk flowers, and holding an all-bisque mignonette with swivel head, blue glass eyes, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, peg-jointed arms and legs, and costume. When wound, the toy glides forward and in circles, her head turns, she waves her right arm up and down, and the little girl swings to and fro. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: attributed to Vichy, circa 1880. Value Points: the rarity of the toy is enhanced by its splendid original presentation and delightful actions.

The wooden table with oval shapely top and fancy spindled pedestal with three legs has a hidden under-latch which allows for tilt-top use as well as flat top, with black ebony finish and gilt and red stenciling and trim. Pale bisque socket head with very round face, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted short curly lashes, rose-blushed eye shadow, brush-stroked and multi-feathered brows, accented nostrils of rounded tip nose, accented eye corners, closed mouth with pale outlined lips that are upturned at the corners into a dainty smile, row of painted teeth, deeply impressed dimples at cheeks, pierced ears, extended-length brunette mohair wig over Steiner pate, Steiner composition body with jointing at shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and knees. Condition: nearly imperceptible short hairline at right side forehead with professional restoration, otherwise excellent. Marks: Sie F 6 (incised) Steiner S.G.D.G. Paris Bourgoin (red ink signature). Comments: Jules Steiner, circa 1884. Value Points: extremely rare model of Steiner bebe whose large size allows very fine detail of sculpting such as nose shape, philtrum, and dimples, beautiful pale bisque and painting, original body and body finish, antique dress with label from Au Bon Marche, leather boots impressed with full figure of woman, undergarments, and superb bonnet.
Two Fine Antique Bebe Bonnets 500/700

For bebes about 18"-22". Including woven bonnet with wide brim, one side brim upturned and decorated with pleated silk ruffle and bow on the underside, and two bountiful silk floral corsages on the outside; and woven bonnet with upturned brim lavishly decorated with ivory silk ribbons and white silk flowers. Generally excellent. French, circa 1885.
Outstanding Example of the Rare French "Monkey Conjurer" by Phalibois 18,000/25,000

28" (71 cm.) Arranged upon an ebony wooden base, under oval glass dome, is a paper mache headed monkey standing behind a wooden table, the entire scene framed by a garden arbor decorated with fabric leaves and flowers. The monkey has brown glass movable eyes, hinged lower jaw, double row of teeth, mohair wig, beard and moustache, carton torso, carved wooden hands, and is costumed as a mystical Conjuror in elaborate silks and velvets with gold ormolu paper edging and conical shaped crown, lorgnette at his right eye. The table is decorated with velvet drapes edged with metallic fringe and upon the table are arranged various objects including playing cards and two silver cups that the monkey clasps. When wound, and lever released, intricate movements occur: the monkey turns his head to one side, nods, then to the other side and nods again, and, in synchronic movements with the nods, he lifts the silver cups to reveal different possibilities including green, orange or white balls, die, little boxes, and such. Sometimes both cups are lifted simultaneously, sometimes in sequence. Throughout, he blinks his eyes and opens and closes his mouth as though calling for wagers. Two musical tunes occur from a separate pull-string and lever. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (original French language paper tune label on base). Comments: Henri Phalibois, circa 1880, the "Monkey Conjuror" appears to have been a popular theme with Phalibois for a number of years despite its somewhat complicated mechanism, and was offered to both English and French markets; one known example is documented as having been the centerpiece of an Austin, Texas, gambling saloon at the time. Value Points: exceptionally fine state of preservation with well-functioning music and motions, superb presentation of background, costumes, and accessories.
Extremely Rare French Mechanical "Alligator" by Roullet & Decamps in Exhibition Size 8000/13,000
Lot # 97 (Sale Order: 99 of 296)
34" (86 cm.) Of very sturdy paper mache with painted finish to realistically depict an alligator hide, the figure has hinged jaw, ferociously sculpted row of teeth, bulging glass eyes, sculpted ribs and hide, and sculpted claws. A mechanism within the alligator creates a series of realistic movements: when wound, the alligator moves forward in a complicated slithering manner allowed by the linen-wrapped jointing at the neck and mid-torso and by multiple jointing of the tail, while the jaw opens and closes in a synchronized bulging movement of the eyes. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Comments: Roullet & Decamps, circa 1895, the firm created a number of mechanical animals ranging from gentle kittens to squirrels in cozy scenes to more exotic animals such as lizards, and this present example, the alligator. Value Points: perfectly preserved mechanical animal was likely presented as an exhibition model, judging by its size and extreme rarity.
German Bisque Miniature Novelties in Original Sample Box by Hertwig 700/900

14" (36 cm.) x 11". The cardboard box is fitted with 29 miniature all-bisque novelty figures including men on horseback at the hunt, dogs, and a series of leprechauns with amusing hats and accessories, along with a bisque mushroom house. Each is affixed to the original sample box, and identified on the underside with a paper label with original factory inventory number. The sample box was displayed in the showrooms and at toy fairs by the firm of Hertwig, showing the many products available from their firm, and is very rare to find still intact. Germany, Hertwig, circa 1915.
