Rare Roman Soldier or Gladiator Bronze Leg Guards 1-3rd Century A.D.

Lot # 1007 (Sale Order: 18 of 304)

A rare one-of-a-kind pair of ancient Roman Bronze Greaves, dating from the late 1st to early 3rd century AD, used by soldiers and gladiators for leg protection in combat. These finely crafted guards originate from the Provincia Moesia Superior & Pannonia, a key military region in the Balkans. Their deep green patina reflects centuries of burial, and they have been professionally cleaned and conserved with museum wax.

Provenance: Excavated from a Roman Villa Rustica near Sirmium in present-day Serbia, a city that became one of four capitals of the Roman Empire in 294 AD. The buyer went through rigorous government approval before legally exporting this item to the US. Originally inhabited by Illyrians and Celts, Sirmium was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC and later became the capital of Pannonia Inferior. A major military and administrative center, it was home to soldiers and veterans, making it highly likely these greaves belonged to a retired legionary who settled there. Sirmium remains an archaeological site of exceptional importance, offering rare insights into Roman military life. Truly this piece belongs in a museum!

Extremely Rare Complete Verdigris Bronze Roman Legionaire Helmet on Stand

Lot # 1008 (Sale Order: 19 of 304)

This is a Verdigris Bronze Roman Helmet featuring a domed skullcap, decorative brow ridge, and hinged cheek pieces. This classic design provided critical protection in battle, while its distinctive styling reflected the evolving aesthetics of Roman armor. Mounted on a wooden display stand, it is a striking showpiece of ancient military craftsmanship, offering insight into the helmets worn by legionaries or cavalrymen during the height of the Roman Empire.

Bronze helmets, such as this, were often used by elite troops, particularly in the Republican and early Imperial periods, before iron became the dominant material. The hinged cheek guards suggest a design similar to those worn by legionaries and auxiliary forces, allowing for both protection and mobility.

A remarkable piece of Roman Military History, this helmet embodies the ingenuity and strength of the soldiers who once marched under the banners of the Empire.

Provenance: Purchased from a respected European Antiquities Collector

Question from Buyer: What period is this helmet? Answer: I am by no means an expert. I have hundreds of reference books and lots of contacts, many with differing opinions. I believe based on the articulated cheek pieces, the dome decorations, the knobby top grasper, and the presence of the neck guard that it's early Roman Empire, possibly Cavalry because if it's weight and flexibility, and definitely B.C. One dealer said it resembled Etruscan design, so it could very well be Italian peninsula. That all brings me to most likely 2C-1C B.C. I didn’t want to put a date because I wasn't 100% sure of it!

Roman Era Ancient Legionary Helmet 2ndC A.D. named APPIUS Fourth Legion Singidunum Museum Quality

Lot # 1009 (Sale Order: 20 of 304)

Roman Era Ancient Bronze Weisenau Type Legionary Helmet 2nd century A.D. named to APPIUS of the Fourth Legion at Singidunum

This one-of-a-kind Roman Legionary Helmet is an extraordinary and extremely rare example of a named piece of ancient armor in Museum Quality! Dating back to the 2nd century A.D., this Weisenau-type bronze helmet features an extended neck guard and articulated, decorated hinged cheekpieces, designed for both protection and mobility in battle. What sets this artifact apart is the punctuated inscription on the neck guard: “APPIVS°LEG°IIII°FL”, identifying it as the personal helmet of Appius of the Fourth Legion Flavia Felix. The helmet has been professionally cleaned and temporarily preserved with conservation wax, maintaining its excellent condition and beautiful patina.

The Legio IV Flavia Felix was a distinguished Roman legion stationed at Singidunum (modern-day Belgrade, Serbia), a crucial fort along the Danubian Limes. Established by Emperor Vespasian in 69 A.D., this legion played a vital role in defending the empire’s northern frontier against barbarian invasions. Singidunum was a strategic Roman stronghold, later becoming the birthplace of Emperor Jovian before being sacked by the Huns in 441 A.D. and the Avars and Slavs in 584 A.D. By the early 7th century, the fort was ultimately destroyed, marking the end of Roman influence in the region.

A named Roman helmet is an exceptionally rare find, especially one tied to a specific soldier and legion. This artifact is not just a relic of ancient warfare but a direct link to an individual warrior who served in the legions of Rome. With its well-preserved form and historical significance, this piece carries immense value, both as a museum-quality display and as a testament to the military legacy of the Roman Empire.

Provenance: A metal detector ground find in Serbia near Sirmium. Sirmium was a city in the Roman province of Pannonia, located on the Sava river, on the site of modern Sremska Mitrovica in the Vojvodina autonomous province of Serbia. First mentioned in the 4th century BC and originally inhabited by Illyrians and Celts, it was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC and subsequently became the capital of the Roman province of Pannonia Inferior. In 294 AD, Sirmium was proclaimed one of four capitals of the Roman Empire. It was also the capital of the Praetorian prefecture of Illyricum and of Pannonia Secunda. The site is protected as an archaeological Site of Exceptional Importance. The modern region of Syrmia (Srem or Srijem) was named after the city. Pictures of the Helmet in found condition before cleaned and conserved available. Buyer went through rigorous government approval before legally exporting this item to the US. Rare one-of-a-kind personalized Legionary Helmet in Museum quality! This item has a strong reserve

Roman Provincial BI Tetradrachm - AD 251-253 Graded AU

Lot # 1012 (Sale Order: 23 of 304)

This Roman Provincial BI Tetradrachm was minted between AD 251-253 during the reign of Emperor Trebonianus Gallus. Minted in Antioch, this silver coin is graded AU (About Uncirculated), indicating minimal wear and well-preserved details. It features the emperor’s portrait on the obverse, while the reverse seemingly depicts a griffin - a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle.Trebonianus Gallus came to power in 251 AD following the death of Emperor Decius and his son at the Battle of Abritus, a major defeat against the Goths. His rule was marked by ongoing military strife, including Gothic invasions and internal unrest, as well as a devastating plague that swept through the empire. To secure stability, he made peace with the Goths and elevated his son, Volusianus, as co-emperor. However, his perceived failures led to his downfall, and he was ultimately overthrown and killed by his own troops in 253 AD.The coin reflects the turbulent nature of the mid-3rd century, a period of crisis for the Roman Empire. Provincial tetradrachms like this were primarily circulated in the eastern provinces, serving as key instruments of regional trade and imperial propaganda....more

Roman Empire AR Denarius - AD 164-182/3 Graded XF

Lot # 1013 (Sale Order: 24 of 304)

This AR Denarius, minted between AD 164-182/3, is a silver coin from the Roman Empire, graded XF (Extremely Fine), showcasing sharp details and high preservation. The denarius was the standard silver currency of Rome, widely used for military payments, trade, and daily transactions. This period saw the reigns of Lucius Verus, Marcus Aurelius, and Commodus. Lucius Verus co-ruled with his adoptive brother, Marcus Aurelius, from 161 until his death in 169 AD. While Marcus Aurelius focused on philosophy and governance, Verus led Rome’s military campaigns against the Parthians. After Verus' death, Marcus Aurelius ruled alone until 180 AD, when his son, Commodus, took the throne.Lucilla, the daughter of Marcus Aurelius and wife of Lucius Verus, played a notable role in imperial politics. After Verus’ death, she remained influential until Commodus, fearing a conspiracy, ordered her execution in 182/3 AD. Commodus' reign marked the decline of the Pax Romana, with increasing instability, corruption, and extravagant displays of power. This denarius represents a pivotal era in Roman history, reflecting the leadership transitions and challenges of maintaining imperial control. Coins from this period offer insight into Rome’s economic and political shifts as it moved from stability under the "Five Good Emperors" to the turmoil of Commodus' rule. This coin holds significant value as a true artifact of Roman Empire history.
