Born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1935, Graciela Rodo prepared for two careers; music and painting. She studied piano while attending the School of Fine Arts in La Paz and later in Santiago, Chile. The quality of her talent led her to Vienna, where she pursued studies at the Vienna School of Fine Arts. The first exhibition of her paintings was held in Potosi, Bolivia, in 1951. Since that time she has been honored with more than 100 exhibitions throughout the world, including a solo show at the Organization of American States in Washington D.C. and the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America, and a special commission by the Metropolitan Opera to create a commemorative work for the opening of their 1987 opera season. She was also commissioned by the United Nations to create works for the International year of the Child in 1979 and for the 1989 World Summit for Children. Boulanger's scope, vision, and abilities in a host of artistic media have combined to yield a talent that today is recognized among the leaders of the contemporary Latin American art movement.

1978 JOHNNY FRIEDLAENER Art Exhibition Poster Mid-Mod

Offered here is a dynamic poster for an exhibit of the work of well-known and influential 20th century artist and printmaker, Johnny Friedlaender (German/French 1912 - 1992):

  • 1978
  • Museu de Arte São Paulo
  • Original lithograph
  • 22¼ × 30¼
  • Light edge soil and creasing to LL corner, easily matted out in framing
  • No noticeable fading or loss of color
Johnny Friedlaender's early studies were in Breslau under Otto Mueller. He later moved to Dresden and in 1935 he fled the Nazis by going to Czechoslovakia. In 1937 he moved to the Hague, in Holland, where he first exhibited. It was not long before he went to live in Paris. During the war he worked in the French Resistance, based in the south of France. After the war he returned to live and work in Paris though he paid frequent visits to the United States, where he taught and published some of his most important etchings. Though a fine abstract painter, he was also one of the most important masters and teachers of colored etching of the post-war years. His techniques influenced Stanley Hayter at Atelier 17 and many others of his contemporaries. He produced hundreds of etchings and the still incomplete catalogue runs into four volumes.

Raymond Sipos (United States, b. 1938) is descended from a family of Hungarian musicians and violin makers. After studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in California, he worked as a mechanisms and optics engineer before becoming a full-time artist in 1972. The artist generates ideas for his paintings by browsing through hundreds of color slides which he has developed through the years. Armed with a camera, he goes to unusual locations to photograph whatever intrigues him. Dynamic compositions and a vibrant palette are hallmarks of the work of this popular and avidly collected American artist.
