One show led to another and his list of collectors began to grow. In 1977, Sokol was introduced to Felicie. Elegant Kaoru Saito MANICURE Modern Japanese Art

Lot # 10144 (Sale Order: 55 of 673)

This elegant mezzotint is by well-known Japanese artist Kaoru Saito:

  • Title: "Manicure"
  • 1989
  • Mezzotint
  • 11¼ × 13-1/8
  • Signed and numbered from an edition of 93
  • Bright and fresh; never mounted, matted or framed
  • Certificate of Authenticity
Kaoru Saito is basically self-taught in the mezzotint process, yet he is considered to be one of its most accomplished technicians. It is an extremely difficult, labor-intensive and rarely practiced print method, including scratching hundreds, if not thousands of passes across a metal plate until the entire surface has a rough, uniform texture. The plate would print solid black if it were now run through the press. A burnishing tool is then used to rub smooth the areas which will print from gray to white. Mezzotint rewards the skilled practitioner with subtle shading and incredible graphic detail. Images in this series that include color were printed with additional, aquatint plates. Saito, now in his 70s, was born and still lives in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan.

Dennis Oppenheim STUDY FOR UPPER CUT Signed Art Print

Lot # 10145 (Sale Order: 56 of 673)

We quote from Dennis Oppenheim's artist statement concerning the final result of his vision — a mixed media sculpture of steel, plywood, hard foam, sheetrock and art books that is now part of the permanent collection at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu: "The role of the teeth designate 'art books' as a conceptual bite. The 'knocked out teeth' signify entire sections of art history missing from the collection of writings."

  • Title: "Study for Upper Cut"
  • 1998
  • 37 × 41
  • Signed by the artist
  • Numbered from a limited edition of 150
  • Bright and fresh; never mounted, matted or framed
  • Certificate of Authenticity
Dennis Oppenheim (American, b. 1938) had his first solo exhibition in New York in 1968. Oppenheim has made conceptual art, performance art, earth works, and quirky mechanical pieces that defy categorization and easy explanation. He still lives and works in New York City.

NOSTALGIA Beautiful Woman Mikio Watanabe Art Mezzotint

Lot # 10149 (Sale Order: 60 of 673)

"I am absolutely convinced that at the heart of all things existing in this world, there is something very simple and pure which goes beyond the complexity of appearances," says the artist Mikio Watanabe. This conviction, perhaps, is what makes Watanabe's mezzotints of the female form so mesmerizing: Title: "Nostalgia" 1993 Mezzotint on BFK Rives; all four edges softly deckled Numbered from a limited edition of 75, plus XXX Roman Signed in pencil in the margin LR Sheet: 15 × 22 Image: 5½ × 12½ Very good condition; LR corner lightly creased; readily matted out Certificate of Authenticity Watanabe creates a mezzotint by repeatedly pressing a curved, serrated mezzotint rocker over the surface of a copper plate until has received many thousands of tiny indentations from this tool. This procedure is extremely time-consuming — most of the plates take 70 - 80 hours to produce — but plates made this way yield velvety blacks that can be obtained no other way. After the entire surface of the plate has been roughened, scraper and burnishers are used to raise tones of gray and white. "During the slow process of engraving, as I scrape the burrs that I have incised on the copper plate and then polish it, the sensitivity which lies inside me can be revealed. Giving shape and light to what was before absolute darkness, I try to feel this universe of purity which exists deep inside the human body," says the artist. Mikio Watanabe (Japan, b. 1954) completed his studies in Tokyo in 1977 and settled in Paris, where he learned engraving techniques at the Atelier 17. Since 1981, Mikio Watanabe has focused on mezzotint and his works can be found in many public collections including Bibliotheque National in Paris, the Central Academy of Ar...more

Christine Picavet Horse Art Print: Turning Left

Lot # 10163 (Sale Order: 74 of 673)

The subtle turning of horses on a pathway is the focus of this lovely print, portraying the gentle beauty of these animals. Artist: Christine Picavet Title: Turning Left Medium: Lithograph Image Size: 18 x 23 Sheet Size: 23 x 28 1/2 inches Signed in pencil, lower right Numbered from an edition of 600 Excellent condition; never mounted, matted or framed Certificate of Authenticity included Christine Picavet was born in 1951 in Paris, France, and grew up in Villard de Lans, a ski resort in the Alps.  Having grown up in an artistic family, and developing a passion for horses at an early age, it made sense that Picavet would become an equine artist.  After showing horses and becoming a riding instructor, Christine moved to Chantilly where she worked for the top racing stables in France while painting Thoroughbred horses. After moving to New York, she continued to work as an exercise rider, but it was here that she received her first commissions to paint famous horses.  Eventually Picavet moved to Southern California where she worked for Hall of Fame trainer Charles Whittingham while her reputation as an equine artist grew.  She married an equine veterinarian (you might say, she picked a vet), and in 1980, when expecting her son Eric, she ended a decade of riding race horses to become a full-time equine artist. After painting race horses for twenty-five years, Christine expanded her subjects to include western scenes, wildlife and animal portraits. Twice she has studied with leading Western artist Howard Terpning at the Cowboy Artists of America Museum. In 2004, the International Museum of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park honored the artist with a one woman show entitled, Thoroughbred Champions, Mustangs & A Cow...more
