Jonathan Lasker -Unconscious Construct Art Print

    Lot # 10180 (Sale Order: 88 of 673)

This abstract lithograph features a modern abstract display of geometric shapes, done in a more unusual freehand drawing style. The title suggests the artist may be more concerned with creating from the unconscious, rather than geometric forms on the surface.

    • Artist: Jonathan Lasker
    • Title: Unconscious Construct
    • Date: 2002
    • Medium: Lithograph
    • Signed and numbered in pencil along with year, lower left

    • Condition: Excellent
    • Retail gallery price 1,250 USD
    • Certificate of Authenticity included
This litho print is a nice variation on the abstract form.

Jonathan Lasker (1948- ) studied at the School of Visual Arts, New York, and California Institute of the Arts, Valencia.
      From the artist's own words:

"A critic once wrote that my work asked the same question of its viewer that John Q. Public would ask when looking at an abstract painting. The question being, What is that supposed to be? What the critic, Stephen Westfall, meant was that although my forms are abstract, my paintings give viewers suggestions to help them perceive pictorial images in my paintings. Suggestion, of course, being the only way one sees images in a painting, even if the painting is supposedly realistic."

Lasker's work has appeared in many group shows in the U.S. and Europe, and can be found in public collections, including MIT Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and Wacoal Art Center, Tokyo.

Kaoru Saito Manicure Mezzotint Fashion Lady Art Print

    Lot # 10181 (Sale Order: 89 of 673)

This mezzotint artwork portrays a woman with a luminous gaze. The title calls attention to her fingers, which point in a different direction, giving balance to her delicate pose.

    • Artist: Kaoru Saito
    • Title: Manicure
    • Date: 1989
    • Medium: Mezzotint
    • Signed and numbered
    • Edition of 93

    • Condition: Excellent
    • Retail gallery price 600 USD
    • Certificate of Authenticity included
This is a stylish image, and a fine mezzotint.

Kaoru Saito is basically self-taught in the mezzotint process, yet he is considered to be one of its most accomplished technicians. It is an extremely difficult, labor-intensive and rarely practiced print method, including scratching hundreds, if not thousands of passes across a metal plate until the entire surface has a rough, uniform texture. The plate would print solid black if it were now run through the press. A burnishing tool is then used to rub smooth the areas which will print from gray to white. Mezzotint rewards the skilled practitioner with subtle shading and incredible graphic detail. Images in this series that include color were printed with additional, aquatint plates. Saito, now in his 70s, was born and still lives in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan.

NU C Sleek Sensual Nude Mikio Watanabe Art Mezzotint

    Lot # 10187 (Sale Order: 95 of 673)

"During the slow process of engraving, as I scrape the burrs that I have incised on the copper plate and then polish it, the sensitivity which lies inside me can be revealed. Giving shape and light to what was before absolute darkness, I try to feel this universe of purity which exists deep inside the human body," says the artist Mikio Watanabe. Perhaps it is this deeply felt process that makes Watanabe's mezzotints so beautiful:

    • Title: "Nu C" ("Nude C")
    • 1986
    • Mezzotint on BFK Rives
    • Numbered from a limited edition of 50, plus XV Roman
    • Signed in pencil in the margin LR
    • Sheet: 10 × 13
    • Image: 5 × 5
    • Tape residue top edge verso; otherwise very good - excellent condition
    • Certificate of Authenticity
Watanabe creates a mezzotint by repeatedly pressing a curved, serrated mezzotint rocker over the surface of a copper plate until has received many thousands of tiny indentations from this tool. This procedure is extremely time-consuming — most of the plates take 70 - 80 hours to produce — but plates made this way yield velvety blacks that can be obtained no other way. After the entire surface of the plate has been roughened, scraper and burnishers are used to raise tones of gray and white.

Mikio Watanabe (Japan, b. 1954) completed his studies in Tokyo in 1977 and settled in Paris, where he learned engraving techniques at the Atelier 17. Since 1981, Mikio Watanabe has focused on mezzotint and his works can be found in many public collections including Bibliotheque National in Paris, the Central Academy of Art, Kuala Lumpur and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Edward Sokol Signed Art Print Ice Skaters Central Park

    Lot # 10188 (Sale Order: 96 of 673)

This vibrant New York scene of ice skating in Central Park is catpured in this print in splashes of intense color. Artist: Edward Sokol Title: Ice Skaters Medium: Serigraph Image Size: 24 x 32 1/4 inches Sheet Size: 30 x 38 3/4 inches Signed and numbered Edition: 300 Excellent condition; never mounted, matted or framed Certificate of Authenticity Edward Sokol always knew he would be an artist from his first crayon drawings on the wall at age three, through his formal training at New York s High School of  Music and Art, and Hunter College , where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. Upon graduation, Sokol taught elementary school while pursuing a career as a working artist.  To his great surprise and delight, at the end of one year, and after only a few outdoor art shows, two New York art galleries offered to represent him.  Soon he was working full time as an artist. One show led to another and his list of collectors began to grow. In 1977, Sokol was introduced to Felicie. Enchanted by his paintings, she became his exclusive publisher for his limited edition graphics and exhibition posters. With her worldwide distribution to galleries, she began producing his editions. In Paris , she came up with a special embossing technique on many of his lithographs to accentuate his striking use of lines.  In New York , Felicie had Sokol work on his silk screens using enamel inks to bring out the vibrancy of his colors. She held numerous exhibitions of his paintings in her gallery, and his limited editions and posters were on view year round. One of the most distinguishing characteristics of the artist s work is a highly sensitive and seemingly innate sense of color.  Whether using a palette of strong or soft colo...more

Sensitive Kaoru Saito VIOLET REST Modern Japanese Art

    Lot # 10189 (Sale Order: 97 of 673)

This sensitive mezzotint is by popular and avidly collected Japanese artist Kaoru Saito:

    • Title: "Violet Rest"
    • 1988
    • Mezzotint
    • 14¼ × 16-1/8
    • Signed and numbered from an edition of 93
    • Bright and fresh; never mounted, matted or framed
    • Certificate of Authenticity
