Rare Wheel Lock Rifle Dated 1621 With Gold Inlay

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 47 of 440)

Offered here for your consideration is rare wheel-lock rifle dated 1621 with gold inlay. It was made in Europe, possibly Spain, as the writing is in Spanish. In the 1300s, “firearms” were fired by lighting a wick to spark the powder in the barrel. Loading and firing it was similar to how one would fire an antique cannon (hence the term “hand cannon”). The first major improvement in firearms came around 1400 when the matchlock was invented. The next significant improvement came in the 1500s and was called a wheel-lock. It was invented in Germany, and those guys were into making clocks and high-tech stuff (for this time period). The wheel-lock generated a spark mechanically. The wheel-lock works by spinning a steel wheel against a piece of pyrite to generate spark (similar to a Zippo lighter). With no match to lite, the wheel-lock was more reliable than the matchlock (especially on windy days). Matchlocks and wheel-locks remained in common use for a number of years alongside each other until the technology for producing the wheel-lock system became more affordable. This is an extra fancy example with gold inlay, double set triggers and has ANO 1621 on the top of the barrel. This one seems to function properly when wound up and is a super rare chance to own a highly collectible wheel-lock rifle! ***This firearm is an ANTIQUE and does not require an FFL Transfer*** MAKER: Unknown, but has Spanish writing on it. APPROX AGE: 1621 is on top of the barrel. SIZE: The barrel measures 26 inches. This is an approx. .50 to .58 caliber rifle. CONDITION: Pretty good for its age, with wear expected and it seems to function like it should when wound up and dry fired. Some gold inlay is missing in a few spots and the key to turn the mechanism is not the original but it works. This weapon has not been test fired and it is recommended a competent gunsmith look at it before attempting to do so. Please look closely at the pictures as they are an important part of our description and are hereby incorporated into the description, specifically with regard to the condition. HANDLING: There will be a $20 handling / packaging fee for shipping this lot. SHIPPING: The actual cost of postage will be added on top of the handling charges. *****This firearm is an antique and does not require an FFL Transfer*****
