1960s Weatherby (KYG) Mark XXII (24"), 22 LR, Semi-Auto Rifle, J-27435

Lot # 236

According to the "J" serial number prefix, this Weatherby Mark XXII magazine fed semi-automatic rifle was produced at KTG-Japan in circa 1967-1971. SPECS: Glossed Monte C...morearlo walnut stock with skip-line diamond cut checkering/ high fluted comb & raised cheek, Rosewood forearm tip with white spacer, Rosewood grip cap with white diamond inlay & white spacer, brown textured rubber buttpad with embossed "WEATHERBY" & black/ white spacers, 24" barrel with recessed crown & polished blued finish, aluminum alloy receiver with grooved top & polished black finish, jeweled bolt, u-notch rear sight, ramped dovetailed brass bead front sight, grooved bolt handle with chrome finish, tang safety, sling rings with brown leather sling, detachable box magazine and period correct Weaver V22 scope. CONDITION: This rifle is in nice condition with very light wear, has an excellent sharp/ clean bore and appears to be in good working order. HISTORY: Based loosely on a Beretta design with several Weatherby-guided enhancements, Roy Weatherby started the Mark XXII rimfire rifle design in 1960. Initially built by Beretta in Italy, the Mark XXII was introduced at tradeshows during the winter of 1961-62 and garnered several thousand orders. Over the coming decades, manufacturing of the Mark XXII was variously contracted to KGT and Nikko in Japan (1967-80), then in the United States to Mossberg (1979-82), then back to Japan to Howa (1984-88). It was discontinued in 1988, but was then resurrected in 2007 as a bolt action. Two versions of the original Mark XXII auto loader were available. One fed via a tubular magazine; the other used a box-type, detachable magazine that held 10 rounds. There were 81,618 clip fed models and 28,017 tube fed models produced. During this time, the type & quality of the wood & finish, rosewood spacers, safety, side lever, rear sight, bolt, trigger, floor plate design, magazines, and magazine release were just some of the many changes that occurred during the manufacturing period. From 1967 to 1971, Beretta added a rosewood forend tip and pistol grip cap to the stock. Next manufactured by KTG-Japan from 1967-1971 with a "J" serial number prefix. KTG and Beretta XXIIs were the only ones to have the desirable trigger pull adjustment screw in front of the trigger guard. Next was Nikko-Japan 1972-1980 with "N" serial number prefix for the clip model and "T" prefix for the tube feed model. Nikko was the first one to make the tube feed models, and the first to have laser checkering. Next was Mossberg USA 1981-1982 with serial number prefix "AC" for clip and "AT" for the tube fed model. Last was Howa Japan 1984-1988 with serial number prefix "JC" for clip and "JT" for tube. One of the hangups in producing the Mark XXII was that Weatherby refused to accept anything less than premium quality. Highly polished barrels featured the same rich, deep bluing as Weatherbys premium big-game rifles. Stocks were of quality walnut glowing beneath a gloss finish. Makers just weren't accustomed to holding rim-fire rifles to such standards. Manufacturing costs continually climbed and profitability margins suffered which finally led to it being discontinued in 1988. SHIPPING - We offer free shipping anywhere within the continental US. All firearms must be sent to an FFL (or C&R if applicable) regardless of age or caliber. This includes antiques & muzzleloaders.
