* Extremely scarce Nichols & Child revolving rifle
Model: revolving rifleSerial # - Firearms: NSNCaliber: .36 cal.Barrel Length: 27 1/8"Condition: Excellent
Make: Extremely scarce Nichols & Child, Model: revolving rifle, Serial # - Firearms: NSN, Caliber: .36 cal., Barrel Length: 27 1/8", Condition: Excellent, percussion action. This is a fine example of any externally indexing revolving rifle designed and patented in 1838 in a collaborative effort between Rufus Nichols and Edward Childs of Conway Massachusetts. This example has the rare feature of a hinged loading lever mounted below the barrel which is half round and half octagonal. Along with the "Lacy Patchbox" the rifle has three wildlife creatures inletted into the butt stock on the left side. One is located on the cheek rest with two smaller just behind stacked. The butt plate, toe plate, trigger guard and embellished creatures are all German silvered and show only minor light handling for its age. The stock is a fancy bird's eye curly maple with a pronounced drop comb. The cheek rest has a contoured separation line which starts at approximately 0.214" wide and widens to 0.617" before it tapers back off into the stock adding to the beauty of the wood. The cylinder is a 6 shot variation with each chamber having a cone on the front edge. When the cylinder locking lever is lowered on the left side of the frame the cylinder is pushed forward 0.126" and creates a gas seal improving the functionality of the rifle. The hammer is elongated. It is mounted on the right side of the frame and travels upwards and forward approximately 2" from the pivot point to the center of the frame flat top where there is a hole. The hammer drives through the hole striking the percussion cap and firing the rifle. The indexing main arm is located under the hammer with the secondary arm being contained by the cylinder pin. Both arms are connected to each other by a flat curved metal bar retained to each by a screw. The front of the cylinder pin is set into a circular blast shield. This has a cut out in the bottom through which the loading lever plunger can pass. The barrel, frame, cylinder and mechanism are all in the white showing only minor light handling. The flat top of the barrel is dovetailed and fitted with a notch fixed sight and the front of the barrel has a single post. The bore shines very bright with well defined rifling. The wood shows only the smallest of hairlines either side at the very most rear point of the frame with little other handling wear present. This is a fantastic example of a late exposed indexing mechanism Nichols & Child with the desirable loading lever and fancy patchbox. It will be a wonderful addition to an early American revolving rifle collection. All items sold AS IS per terms of the auction. Please read terms. Functionality and completeness unknown. * Extremely scarce The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co.
Model: lever action pistol carbineSerial # - Firearms: 32Caliber: .41 cal.Barrel Length: 16.5" octagonal
lever action pistol carbine. Make:Extremely scarce The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., Model: lever action pistol carbine, Serial # - Firearms: 32, Caliber: .41 cal., Barrel Length: 16.5" octagonal, Condition: very good plus condition. It is believed that less than 300 lever action Navy pistols where constructed with 16" barrels. This example still retains a large majority of the silver wash on theframe side plates. The serial number is located on the right side of the lever flat at the top portion closest to the frame as well as on the left side of the grip frame underneath the grip panel, on the left side of the shoulder stock mounting lug underneath the walnut stock and on the underside of the brass rifle style butt plate. The top of the barrel flat is marked "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS & CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN./FEB.14 1854" with the second line appearing to be a light double strike on the "ARMS CO.". The brass frame peeks through the silver wash finish on some edges as well as on the right side just above the smooth walnut grip panel and the left side of the frame just forward of the side plate. The silver wash also shows some toning and a few light tool marks but retains nice strong edges and lines. The front sight is a pinch post and the rear is a dovetail mounted strap type notch with a knurled adjustment wheel. The bore shines bright with nice rifling and a small amount of frosting at the muzzle end which on the outside still retains the knurled wedding band. The barrel still retains its edges not quite as crisp when new but certainly nowhere near any point of rounding off. The barrel has a deep brown mostly mottled patina throughout with light scattered handling wear and freckling. It also shows some light tool marks most noticeable of the wear is on the front rotating portion of the barrel surround. The hammer spur is checkered. The shoulder stock retaining pin has a knurled tightening wheel. The grip panels are a smooth walnut along with the butt stock. They show only a few minor light handling marks throughout with some pressure indentations most noticeable a circular form on the rear side of the panels. The shoulder stock has brass reinforcement rings around the screws that retain the mounting lug. The brass rifle butt plate shows only the lightest of handling. A few screw heads show turning marks and the underside of the lifter shows a few tool marks as well. All items sold AS IS per terms of the auction. Please read terms.
