Steiff Molliette "Charleston" Dangling Dog with ID

Lot # 804 (Sale Order: 5 of 818)

This is a delightful 20 cm example of Steiff's "Molliette". She has a mohair puppy head; long, soft unjointed dangling limbs; and mohair hands, paws, and tail. Her body, arms, and legs are made from a lovely shade of lilac velvet that has darkened slightly over time. She has very large black and brown glass pupil eyes and black, hand embroidered claws, nose, and mouth. She retains her original bell, tattered lime green neck ribbon, ring, and pompom as accessories; her tan hanging ribbon may be a replacement. Molliette is one of a series of "play and car dolls" in the Steiff catalog from 1927-1932. These were based on the most popular named Steiff characters of the time. Each had the head of the character, mohair paws and feet, and dangling velvet limbs. Most were available in several bright, happy "jelly bean" colors and in 20, 30, and 43 cm. It has been suggested that the design of this series was based on a similar line from the Chad Valley Toy Company of England called "Tango Toys." Molliette has her most exceptional metal-rimmed chest tag as her Steiff ID. Condition: As noted. Slightly dusty but in very good to excellent condition overall. Provenance: From a Florida estate. Size 8-1/2'' T.

A Rare Set Of Four Felt Steiff Musicians With IDs.

Lot # 821 (Sale Order: 22 of 818)

This remarkable quartet is part of an original Steiff "village band" or Dorf Musikkapelle. According to company records, this set was in the line from 1911-1913 and is simply documented as "village band, 5 dolls with instruments, item [number] states size in cm." Over time, the instruments have included a variety of wind and stringed examples. It was not unusual for very early Steiff offerings that involved collections of objects - like these musicians and their instruments - that the actual product mix would vary a little, depending on what was on hand and what was in production. All four musician dolls are fully jointed and made from felt; have black shoebutton eyes and horizontal or vertical seamed faces; are stuffed with excelsior; and have their clothing integral to their bodies. Each has comically exaggerated body proportions and features typical to Steiff's early turn-of-last century doll production. Each doll is mounted on a wooden stand that is most likely original to the set. The bass player wears a brown coat, a tan vest decorated with black shoebuttons, and a black hat and pants. His black oilcloth shoes have light overall losses to them. He has a trailing "f" Steiff button in both ears, which is rare overall but typical to this pattern. The doll holds a bow and plays a large wooden bass which has loose but original strings. His left felt hand has been professionally restored. The bass player is most likely Steiff's Alb Farmer pattern, which appeared as a stand-alone item in the line from 1908-1919. The trombone player wears a black coat, pants, and hat. His black vest is remarkably detailed with 18 trailing "f" Steiff buttons. His shoes are made from black oilcloth; one has light losses on the back. He has a trailing "f" Steiff button in both ears, which is rare overall but typical to this pattern - which is quite similar to the bass player design. This doll plays a large wooden trombone, which has light losses and restorations. The trombone player is most likely Steiff's Dachau Farmer pattern, which appeared as a stand-alone item in the line from 1908-1928. The clarinet player wears a black coat with brass buttons, blue professionally restored pants, a tan top hat, and felt "spat" style shoes. He retains his trailing "f" Steiff button in his left ear. This doll plays a large wooden clarinet. The clarinet player is most likely Alphonse, the character from the comic book series "Happy Hooligans." Steiff made Alphonse as a stand-alone item in the line from 1904-1928. The design of this example's hands, which are simple and digit-less, and his painted-on hair, suggest that this doll was made at the earliest portion of this time frame. The violin player wears a black coat, pants, and hat, and black oilcloth shoes. He retains his trailing "f" Steiff button in his left ear. This doll plays a wooden violin and holds a bow in one hand. He appears to have some restoration around both ankles. This violin player is most likely based on the character Lempel, the teacher character from the popular book "Max and Moritz." Steiff made Lempel as a stand alone items in line in two sizes from 1909-1919 overall. Size: The violin player stands about 13" tall; all others are 12" tall. Condition: As noted. Overall good condition with surface dust and light to moderate general losses and wear commiserate with age, type of materials, and manner of construction. Provenance: From an outstanding East Coast collection. Size Largest: 13 - 1/4" T.

Lot # 823 (Sale Order: 24 of 818)

This lot consists of two early and charming toys, a lamb on wheels and a wind up dog and hoop. The lamb is standing, unjointed, and covered in white wool. She has black feet, a slightly open mouth, pert ears, and lovely light blue and black pupil eyes. Her ribbon and bell appear to be original. She glides along four tiny metal wheels. She was most likely made in France at the turn of last century. The dog - perhaps a poodle and possibly manufactured by Roullet & Decamps - is jointed, begging, and covered with long, lush wool. Her face is detailed with brown and black pupil eyes and a black hand embroidered nose and mouth. She holds a decorated hoop between her front paws. Designed as a wind up toy, she would skip through the hoop once activated. This mechanism has not been tested. Condition: As noted. Both with light playwear and losses commensurate with age. Very good condition overall. Size Largest: 6 - 3/4" T.

Larger Woolen Poodle On Wheels.

Lot # 824 (Sale Order: 25 of 818)

This great turn of last century poodle is quite the character and would look charming displayed with dolls from the same period. He is standing on all fours and is covered in long, curly, tan wool highlighted with a few brown spots. He has long, playful ears and a peach colored ribbon, which is probably original to him. His face comes to life with oversized black and brown pupil eyes, a shiny black nose, and a fierce - or friendly - open red mouth with distinctive white teeth. This same mouth has been noted on other Roullet & Decamps items, suggesting this may be his manufacturer as well. He rides upon four tiny metal wheels. Condition: As noted. With minimal playwear. Very good condition overall. Size 11 - 1/2" T.
