1921 Model T Depot Hack *rear wheel included
1921 Model T Depot Hack - by Eugene "Gene" L. Schaub around 1997. Gene passed away in May of 1998 before fully completing the project (a couple of the wheels are have un-restored woodwork (spokes), and some of the bodywork is not painted (though it's in gray primer). Gene was a master machinist his entire life, and did most of his work while living in New York. At the time he was working on the Model T, he had a basement machine shop with a lathe, a milling machine, drill press, etc.
Gene did a full restoration on the frame and rebuilt the engine. He also built all the woodwork from Depot Hack plans that he obtained from a museum (I believe it was the Henry Ford museum), and completed the upholstery.
The engine was never started after the rebuild. Gene stated that the pistons were a tight fit, and that the Model T would have to be towed by a car, while in its highest gear, to bed-in the pistons. He also said that this is the way all Model T engines were manufactured at that time, where the pistons had to be bedded-in. Since the pistons haven't moved inside the cylinders in 20 or so years, it would be advisable to soak the cylinder walls with oil before attempting to bed-in the pistons.
As for the rest of the engine, my recollection is that Gene rebuilt everything - valve seats, valves, bearing journals, etc. etc. He also did some work on the carburetor and buzz boxes, and they were in working order (20 years ago).
