U.S. Model 1911A1 Pistol by Remington Rand in Kraft Box with Arsenal Accessories

Lot # 31 (Sale Order: 31 of 1100)

serial #1757096, 45 ACP, 5" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this government arsenal-refurbished pistol retain 100% dark gray-green parkerizing, they have an overall coating of light, moderate, and in some cases heavy, cosmoline. The Keyes Fibre Company grips rate about excellent. The pistol comes in its arsenal Kraft box as-removed from the heavy green wax paper wrap along with the very seldom encountered plastic weatherproof storage pouch. There is one magazine included in the gun and two additional seven round blued magazines, one with remnants of cosmoline and green wax paper wrap adhered to it, the other still as-wrapped from the arsenal; there is included a boar bristle bore brush as well. The function of the arm cannot be determined as the cosmoline has hardened with age and precludes movement of the slide and interior parts; there is no doubt the gun is as-new as arsenal refinished before being stored for the "next war". A prisitine example of a government arsenal refurbished 1911A1 Remington Rand pistol. (38211-26) {C&R}

Lot # 39 (Sale Order: 39 of 1100)

serial #53840, .405 win, 24" round barrel with a bright about excellent bore which shows the beginning of some very light frosting nearer the throat. The barrel retains about 80% original blue, the loss is due primarily to even fading, also showing sparsely scattered light scratches and handling marks from the years. The receiver and the magazine box retain perhaps 75% original blue, strongest on the left side of the action where it is protected by the sight. The bolt shows excellent original blue while the lever assembly has toned to a plum and pewter patina with light oxidation speckles; the hammer retains very good color case-hardening. The buttstock and forend rate very good as neatly refinished many years ago, the metal being slightly proud in some areas at the receiver and tang. The rifle has been fitted during the period of use with a Jostam Manufacturing Hy-Gun recoil pad providing a 12 3/4" length of pull. The rifle is sighted with a Lyman No. 4 ivory hunting front sight, rear sight seat is blanked, and the receiver is fitted with a Lyman No. 21 "climbin Lyman" receiver sight. A very nice vintage 405 that one needn't be afraid to take afield once again, the Jostam pad has hardened with age and could be easily replaced with a modern Sorbothane pad without fear of hurting the rifle's value. (38218-64) {C&R} [Ken Waters Collection]

Colt Model 1855 Percussion Military Musket

Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 40 of 1100)

serial #1500, .56 cal, 31 1/4" barrel with a very good bore which shows sharp rifling its full-length but with scattered oxidation and light pitting. The barrel is an overall dull gray faded blue patina showing wear to pewter at the muzzle, clearly from bayonet use, scattered very light handling marks and pinprick pitting here and there. The bands have toned to gray as has the cylinder. The cylinder shows some length-wise tool marks within the flutes and overall light, and some moderate, pitting, the patent date is faintly visible. The frame is an overall dull pewter gray patina with scattered light pitting, also with dings and tool marks, the topstrap shows an antique period welded repair which was well done. The hammer is a rather gray case-hardened patina as is the triggerguard, which remains mostly smooth. All of the appropriate parts are matching-numbered and the gun seems to function somewhat loosely mechanically. The smooth walnut buttstock rates about very good with overall minor dings and handling marks from the years, now devoid of varnish. There is some moderate oxidation at the rear of the upper tang and at the toe with some minor chipping at toe and heel and a crack at the upper tang. The forearm is similar showing perhaps a bit less wear with a 2 1/2" crack at the left side of the lower forend at the cleaning rod channel showing some old glue. The "Colts Patent" date markings are slightly obscured by old impact marks and the number "13" has been stamped atop the tang. A steel cleaning rod extension with a bulbous threaded end is included in the trap of the butt. An overall very good "example" piece of the large caliber five-shot Colt Model 1855 Rifle Musket. (38238-27) {ANTIQUE}

Extremely Rare Winchester Model 1892 Takedown Rifle with Factory Presentation and D-Grade Carving

Lot # 41 (Sale Order: 41 of 1100)

serial #276779, 44 WCF, 24" octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely and very honest special-order Winchester rifle remain in a lovely state of condition. The barrel and magazine tube retain about 95-97% original blue, the loss is due to light high edge wear, some even fading and extremely light surface flaking to brown on barrel and top and bottom of receiver. The receiver flats remain lovely with strong pale fire blue on the loading gate with the lever and hammer showing strong case colors, muting atop the hammer spur and on the radius of the lever face. The buttplate retains some very strong trace color case-hardening with muted fading and very minor oxidation. The deluxe walnut pistolgrip stock with hard rubber factory pistolgrip cap and fancy forend rate about excellent and are factory d-grade carved in oak leaf and acorn accents. The butt shows the minor handling marks and light drying cracks in the highly figured wood one would expect from the years, showing what may be high-gloss piano finish or more likely a bit of added finish over the years. The right side of the butt was factory inlaid with an engraved oval silver plaque which read: "Presented To/F James Reilly/Fourth Pres.by/the Tanawadeh Outing Club/1905" the inscription has been primarily removed, very neatly and carefully, by a skilled jeweler or gunsmith, the plate with some light polishing marks present. "Presented To" is all that remains of the factory inscription, if one wished to return the plate to the former factory inscription there are any number of excellent quality engravers who could do the job in very short order. The rifle is sighted with its original silver-bladed front sight and 22E Rocky Mountain rear. The included factory letter confirms the configuration as well as the original legend on the plate and shows a ship date of January 1905. There are subsequent returns for service in 1905, 1910 and 1911. Interestingly there are accounts of the presentation from the time period, in both The American Rifleman and Forest and Stream magazines from 1905. The inscription is mentioned in the articles, as well as the arms configuration and amusingly: "The rifle, which is a superb specimen of workmanship was constructed especially for the club by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co.." (and it only had to go back for repair three times..!!). That bit of irony notwithstanding, this is a lovely special order model 1892 rifle, likely a one-of-a-kind special order arm with its factory inlaid and engraved presentation plaque. (38211-5) {C&R}

Exceptional Smith & Wesson K-22 First Model Outdoorsman Revolver

Lot # 42 (Sale Order: 42 of 1100)

serial #664183, 22 LR, 6" barrel with a bright excellent, likely unfired, bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely revolver retain about 99% original blue, the loss may be a tiny handling mark here or there but one must really look hard to locate them. Both hammer and trigger show vivid color case-hardening and there is the tiniest ghost of a turn ring on the cylinder which does not breech the blue. The checkered walnut pre-magna style grips with Silver Smith & Wesson medallions rate excellent and are stamp-numbered to the gun on their interior. The revolver features a silver call-bead front sight and a square-notch rear. Included with the gun is its original red and gold picture box, serial numbered to the gun on its underside on a small manila sticker, affixed to the box bottom. The box itself rates about excellent with very minor handling marks and fraying at the corners with "onionskin" tissue paper in the interior. Overall an absolutely lovely K-22 First Model Outdoorsman revolver that appears unfired in every respect since leaving Springfield Mass. many many years ago. It would be very difficult to find a better specimen. (38211-16) {C&R}

Custom U.S. Model 1903 "Sniper" Rifle with Warner & Swasey Telescopic Musket Sight

Lot # 43 (Sale Order: 43 of 1100)

serial #228638, 30-06, 24" 8-18 dated Rock Island Arsenal barrel with a bright excellent bore which shows some very light softening nearer the throat. The metal surfaces are an overall deep gray parkerized patina, the bolt body showing light operational wear with some minor impact marks on the knob. The bolt shroud and safety show some very good oil-quenched case-hardening. The bottom metal is a mix of blue and faded parkerizing with light dings and handling marks throughout. The straight-grip walnut stock and handguard rate about very good with overall minor dings, dents and handling marks from the years. The left side shows dual "AAJ" acceptance stampings (Springfield Armory 1918-20) within rectangular boxes as well as "AA/W" arsenal rebuild marking with a fading circled serifed "P" firing proof. The original open sights are intact and there is a nice stamped sheet-metal front sight protector present. The arm has been custom fitted at some later date with a Warner & Swasey Model 1908 Telescopic Musket Sight (serial #1221). The left side of the receiver has been neatly drilled and tapped for the base, the stock only very slightly inletted, and the sight mounted, its mounting rail reading on its interior surface "For Rifle No. 409722". The sight itself rates about very good with crisp markings and three purposefully-filed hashmarks on the left side of its top cover, no doubt during the period of use, to be certain the scope was returned to its rifle during field cleaning sessions. The black lacquer is likely a repaint and shows light crackling throughout with overall light flakes, dings and handling marks from the years. The optics are bright, clean and crisp, the adjustments rather stiff. The original rubber eyecup is included, it has hardened and degraded with the years and is now nearly flat from poor storage (there are replacement eyepieces available in commercial channels). There is a nickel oiler-thong kit in place beneath the butt trap. Overall a very attractive First World War "sniper" very neatly done, with a nice honest look. (38238-35) {C&R}

Early Colt Special Order .357 Magnum Revolver

Lot # 44 (Sale Order: 44 of 1100)

serial #9887,.357 Magnum, 6" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely revolver retain 98 to perhaps near 99% original blue, the loss is due primarily to some very light muzzle and high edge wear, the cylinder showing the beginnings of a very light drag mark. The bright-polished sides of the special order wide spur target hammer remain brilliant with the tiniest bit of darkening on the right side of the spur. The checkered walnut Rampant Colt target style grips rate excellent and are pencil-numbered to the gun. The gun comes in its original wood-grain box with yellow and black end label with added surcharge which reads "Wide Spur/Hammer And/Target Stocks", only about one third of this surcharge label remains. Included in the box is the original onion skin wrapping, test target numbered to the gun, "Handling the Handgun" instruction manual and Colt warranty card. Perhaps shipped to Ken Waters for evaluation, the bottom of the box is numbered in black grease pen "9897", clearly a careless error by some factory worker. The gun seems to function well mechanically and feels very much as though it has either been factory tuned or has had an action job professionally done. Really a super 1957-shipped .357 Magnum in a lovely state of condition, that belonged to this famous cartridge developer and gun writer. (38218-38) {C&R} [Ken Waters Collection]

Rare Colt Officers Model Target Revolver in 32 Colt

Fine Colt 1911 Government Model Pistol Shipped to Colt Chairman of the Board Col. William Skinner

Lot # 46 (Sale Order: 46 of 1100)

serial #C47797, 45 ACP, 5" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 95-97% original blue, the loss is due primarily to some light muzzle wear and a small bit of pitting on the left side of frame at the dust cover, it appears as though light surface oxidation was gently removed and a bit of touchup blue added here, the oxidation leaving the remaining pitting behind. There are a few minor handling marks scattered about the surface over the years, two notable dings on the frontstrap and a light reassembly scratch on the left side of the frame. This example is fitted with a long spur hammer, the sides of which have been polished and slightly longer spur grip safety. The face of the trigger has been very neatly stippled and it feels very much as though a trigger job has been done, no doubt during the period of use. The barrel is unmarked but is highly likely a Colt barrel given the shipping destination of this arm. A single blue two-tone magazine is included with an unmarked base rating excellent. The double diamond checkered walnut grips rate very good plus to excellent as well, they show light wear and perhaps a bit of added finish. The included factory letter shows shipment in June 1916 to Col. William C. Skinner, the chairman of the board of Colts Patent Firearms Company. It was a single gun shipment and is marked "For: J.C. Van Cleaf". John Van Cleaf was a prominent New York merchant and banker, being director of The National Park Bank, The Mutual Bank and The Union Dime Bank. Interestingly he was also a member of The Union League Club, where William C. Skinner was also a member, likely how the two knew one another, and explaining the gift of a new Colts Government Model pistol from one man to the other. Overall a very nice pistol with a very interesting shipping destination, given from one of Hartford's bluebloods to one of New York's. (38294-9) {C&R}

Smith & Wesson K-38 Target Masterpiece Hand Ejector Revolver

Lot # 47 (Sale Order: 47 of 1100)

Description Update (5/31/17): C&R

serial #K312546, 38 Special, 4" heavy barrel with an excellent bore. This lovely 1957 made revolver's most notable feature is the 4" heavy barrel with the barrel writing properly centered. It also features a Baughman ramp front sight, target trigger and target sights. According the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica and Nahas there was a shipment of revolvers to the Kansas City, Kansas PD in 1957 made in this configuration but further research indicates this gun is not a KPD gun. It's likely this could have been a private purchase or an overrun that was sold off by the company. This gun retains about 99% factory blue with minor handling marks and turn ring on the cylinder. The .500" target hammer and .500" target trigger retain bold case-hardened colors with light operational wear. The revolver has un-numbered diamond checkered walnut grips that rate excellent with a few minor handling marks. This gun appears to have seen little use over the years. A rare configuration in the early hand ejectors. (86520-2939) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

U.S. Navy Model 1909 Revolver by Colt

Lot # 48 (Sale Order: 48 of 1100)

serial #52313, 45 Colt, 5 1/2" barrel with an excellent bore. This 1909 is in great condition and remains mechanically functional. The metal surfaces retain about 90% factory blue with the grip frame starting to thin, oxidation blemishes, pitting, high edge wear, scattered scratches and a few scattered small dings. The fire blue on the trigger and hammer is very strong with only light operational wear. The smooth walnut factory grips rate good plus with scattered light dents, dings and scratches. The right panel is stamped "UTAH" in 1/4" high letters. The grips are numbered 52318 and this could be a simple factory error or they were swapped around a long time ago in some distant Navy Yard. The cylinder latch is correctly numbered to the gun. The rack number on the butt is crisp but the other markings are soft due to oxidation and pitting. The Rampant Colt with stylized "C" remains crisp as do the other factory markings. There are no factory refurbish marks on the firearm but there is a rework number on the cylinder under the extractor. It cannot be verified that this revolver served on the USS Utah but is highly probable as this Florida class dreadnought battleship was laid in 1909 and commissioned in 1911, the year this gun was made. The Navy only purchased 1,000 Model 1909s making fine condition survivors scarce. Overall, a very nice example of the U.S. Navy Model 1909. (86520-448) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

The Navy only purchased 1,000 Model 1909s making fine condition survivors scarce. Overall, a very nice example of the U.S. Navy Model 1909. (86520-448) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Rare Smith & Wesson Target Model 1903 Hand Ejector Revolver

Lot # 49 (Sale Order: 49 of 1100)

serial #351, 32 S&W Long, 4 1/4" barrel with an excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this early production but seldom seen variation of the model 1903 retain about 85% factory blue with the grip frame toning to a mix of pewter and purple, light to moderate high edge wear, a few light oxidation blemishes and scratches. The standard hammer and smooth trigger retain bold case-hardened colors with minor operational wear. The diamond checkered hard rubber round butt grips with S&W logo rate about excellent with a few light handling marks. All appropriate parts except the grips are correctly numbered to the gun, and it still times and locks up correctly. The revolver features a black blade factory adjustable rear sight and pinned Patridge factory front sight. This rare find has some honest but light wear and remains a fantastic find for the dedicated Smith & Wesson Collector. (86520-1014) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

U.S. Model 1875 Officers Model Trapdoor Rifle

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 50 of 1100)

45-70 Govt, 26" barrel with a bright excellent bore showing one very small spot of oxidation about halfway down its length. The barrel retains about 95-97% original blue, the loss is due primarily to even fading, also with scattered very light oxidation staining over most of its length. The barrel band is a mottled case-hardened patina with the receiver and breech block showing some generous color case-hardening, also with the same sparse smattering of extremely light surface oxidation. The lockplate and hammer are mottled dull case-hardened patina, the hammer toning more to a very lightly oxidized brown, especially on the spur; there are generous traces of colors on the lockplate beneath the hammer. The engraving and markings remain quite crisp, the guard and buttplate primarily a dull gray-brown. This is a type II arm with the detachable checkered walnut pistolgrip, the stock assembly itself rating very good plus to perhaps near excellent with much original varnish and the expected minor handling marks and dings that come from a hunted arm. There is actually some very nice grain figure in the area of the butt primarily on the right side. The German silver forend tip is the correct type II style and is nicely engraved and the original oak cleaning rod with plated ferrule and wiping loop ends is present. The buttplate is properly "U.S." marked and there is a serifed P firing proof at the rear of the checkering pattern along the toeline; the only other marking on the stock is a neatly stamped number "97" just to the rear of the upper tang. The rifle is correctly sighted with a Beach combination front sight, rifle-graduated model 1879 buckhorn rear sight and a flip-up, very early Lyman No. 1 aperture sight neatly inletted at the rear of the upper tang. The inletting of the sight is extremely neatly done and was done during the period of use, the checkering neatly wrapping around the inletting. It is most likely that the original mid-long range vernier sight was removed in deference to the shorter more compact hunting sight (or the sight could very well be original equipment, it is indeed a No 1 with January 28, 1879 patent date and is mounted on the first variation old-style base). The lock is crisp and mechanically functional and the set triger function functions properly. Overall a very nice and very honest example of a Second Type Model 1875 Officers Model trapdoor rifle.
