Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. Pistol Carbine

Lever action pistol carbine with 16 1/2-inch barrel and detachable stock manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. of New Haven, Connecticut c. 1855-57. The Volcanic Arms Co. manufactured an estimated total of 300 pistol-carbines with 16 1/2 inch and 8 inch barrels. This carbine has the distinctive brass receiver and ribbed octagon barrel with integral 18-shot magazine. A adjustable, spring steel, rear sight is mounted on a dovetail on the receiver. The receiver ejector port has a straight cut at the rear and a semi-circular cut-out at the front. The bolt has the Hick's "double nipple" extractor developed in 1856. A brass half-moon front sight is mounted on the magazine block. The hammer has coarse knurling on the spur. The carbine has two-piece, varnished walnut grips. The walnut detachable stock has a crescent buttplate. The stock is attached to the pistol by a pin which is inserted in a hole in the back strap and secured by a thumb screw on the butt. The left barrel flat is roll-stamped: "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854" in three lines. This is truly unique being on the side in lieu of the more common top battel flat! The serial number "20" is visible on: (1) the rear sight base, (2) left side of the finger lever, (3) toggle link, (4) left side of the receiver beneath the grip and (5) inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. There are no visible serial numbers on the stock. The barrel/magazine are blued, the hammer and lever are color casehardened, and the buttplate is silver-plated.

Class: Antique

Fair. The barrel/magazine has a refinished artificial brown patina with sharp edges and clear markings. Wear is limited to some scattered spots of light pitting along the right barrel flat. The brass receiver has a deep, artificial aged patina with a few scattered spots of age discoloration. The right side plate joints are in very good condition while the joints on the left side plate have pry-marks along the upper edges. The hammer, finger lever and trigger have a dark patina. The grips have scattered, shallow handling marks. The modern replacement detachable stock is in good condition. The tops of the professionally made replacement steel stock yoke have been lightly filed. The replacement buttplate retains nearly all of the plated finish with small, scattered, spots of age discoloration. The Volcanic Pistol-Carbine is one of the desirable variations of the scarce and historically significant Volcanic firearms.

Rare Engraved Jennings Breech Loading Rifle

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 3 of 815)

Muzzle Loading Conversion of an Engraved Jennings Breech Loading Rifle

The Jennings rifles were designed by Lewis Jennings. The design is considered to be an improvement of the Hunt Repeating Rifle, but the only Hunt design characteristics kept were the sliding internal bolt, the tubular magazine, the automatic pill primer, and the "Rocket Ball" cartridge. They were manufactured by Robbins & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont, in 1848-1851, and production is believed to have been limited to less then 1,000, including both the repeating rifles and breech loaders, despite their original 5,000 gun contract. Benjamin Tyler Henry (the namesake of the Henry rifle) and Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson were also involved. Smith's later revisions of the design, the Smith-Jennings, was also manufactured by Robbins & Lawrence for a brief period around 1851, and Smith and Wesson latter partnered to manufacture the Smith & Wesson lever action pistols which eventually evolved into the Volcanic pistols and carbines and subsequently the Henry rifle and Winchester Model 1866. In this complicated and relatively rapid evolution, the Jennings is considered the "great-grandfather" of the Winchester rifles. The connection with Winchester along with Smith & Wesson has long made these rifles very desirable. This example has a small brass post front sight, notch rear sight at the breech, scroll engraving on the receiver, "ROBBINS & LAWRENCE/MAKERS/WINDSOR VT." and "C.P. DIXON AGENT/NEW YORK.PATENTED 1849" on the left side of the receiver, a German silver oval inlay on the left side of the stock, and "430" engraved on the lower tang. It has been converted to a muzzle loader in the usual fashion: many of the action components have been removed and a traditional breech plug has been installed at the breech.

Class: Antique

Fair as converted to muzzle loader with refinished blue visible on the ramrod tube and barrel, mottled gray and brown patina on the balance along with moderate pitting, and various small nicks and scratches. The refinished stock is good and has some minor cracks and chips at the front of the wrist (some repaired), light scratches, and a few small dents. Mechanically functions fine as a muzzle loader.

Lot # 1002 (Sale Order: 4 of 815)

Rare Smith & Wesson No.2 Large Frame, .41 Caliber Lever Action Repeating Pistol

This fine No. 2, Large Frame, Lever Action Repeating Pistol was manufactured by S&W in Norwich, Connecticut, c. 1854-55 and chambered for the self-contained, 41. caliber Volcanic cartridge. This pistol has the distinctive part-round/part-octagon barrel with 10-shot integral magazine, toggle link lever with finger hole and two-piece rosewood grips with flared heels. This early production pistol has the Type I features which include: (1) un-crowned muzzle, (2) flat magazine locking spring, (3) round, slotted follower, (4) single spring screw on the bottom of the receiver, (5) lever with spur on the finger hole and (5) frame with hump behind the hammer. The pistol has a flattened cone front sight and L-shaped, notched rear sight. The hammer spur has fine knurling. The top and sides of the frame, side plates, back strap and hammer are decorated with the factory open scroll and leaf style engraving usually found on S&W No. 2 pistols. The pistol originally had a blued or brown finish with varnished grips. The top of the barrel is stamped: "SMITH & WESSON/NORWICH CT./CAST STEEL/PATENT" in four lines. The serial number, "164," is stamped on the rear face of the rear sight and on the bottom of the left side of the frame beneath the grip. "164" is lightly penciled on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. Total production of the S&W No. 2 large Frame Lever Action pistols is estimated at under 500 pistols.

Class: Antique

Fine. 40% plus of original blue finish remains with the balance having aged to an attractive plum brown, patina on the barrel and magazine with silver high lights on the receiver, lever and hammer. The surfaces of the barrel, receiver and side plates are smooth with no pitting and minimal handling wear. The edges are sharp. The barrel markings are clear. The well-executed scroll engraving remains very sharp. The grips have been re-varnished long ago but remain in very good condition and show minimal handling wear. The S&W No. 2 Lever Action pistol is rare and historically significant. It is a key piece in any advanced Smith & Wesson and Winchester collection, and the few surviving examples are difficult to obtain and highly prized.

Special Order Winchester Deluxe First Model 1873 Rifle

Lot # 1003 (Sale Order: 5 of 815)

Special Order Winchester Deluxe First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter states the rifle had an octagon barrel, set trigger, casehardened receiver and XXX checkered stock when it was received in the warehouse on October 13, 1875 and shipped the same day. This rifle has the First Model receiver with dust cover with checkered oval finger grip. The dust cover is secured by grooved guides on either side of the receiver rather than the central rail used on later Model 1873 rifles and carbines. This rifle has several special order features that include deluxe, fancy grade walnut stock and forearm, checkered panels on the forearm and stock wrist, color casehardened receiver and single set trigger. The 24-inch full octagon barrel has the standard sporting style front sight with nickel silver blade and sporting style buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866.OCTOBER 16. 1860" ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEl 1873." in fancy letters. The serial number, "10672", is marked in script numerals between the lever latch and rear stand screw. The barrel and cartridge elevator lack the caliber markings found on later production Model 1873 rifles. The barrel, full-length magazine and loading gate cover are blued, and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are nicely figured, fancy grade American walnut with a piano finish. The stock and forearm have the early style checkering with straight lines parallel to the receiver.

Class: Antique

Fine. 50% of the original blue finish is present on the barrel with some edge wear and minor dents and scratches. The barrel legend is crisp. The blue finish on the magazine is thin with some silvering on contact points. The case colors on the forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, hammer, trigger, and lever have faded to a silver gray patina. The top and forward portion of both sides of the receiver have a number of scattered, shallow dents. The crescent buttplate has patches of dark age discoloration with shallow pitting on the heel and toe. The brass cartridge elevator and buttplate trapdoor have a good-looking, untouched patina. The lever latch is missing. The stock and forearm are both in fine condition. The checkered panels show moderate handling wear. The stock and forearm have scattered, minor scratches and handling marks. This is a great representative example of a early production, deluxe, special order Winchester First Model 1873 lever action rifle.

Volcanic - Lever

Lot # 1004 (Sale Order: 6 of 815)

Exceptional Volcanic Arms Co. Lever Action Carbine

This is an outstanding example of an all original carbine that was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company circa 1856. This late production carbine is numbered "2986" on the left side of the lower tang indicating it was at the very end of the standard production range sometime in late 1856 early 1855. It is rare to find these Volcanic carbine in this super high condition, and it would certainly be a centerpiece of any high end Winchester rifle collection. It is chambered for the .41 caliber Volcanic octagon barrel with integral magazine. The barrel/magazine is blue, the receiver and side plates are all original brass, and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The carbine has beautiful a walnut stock with the high grade, hand rubbed varnish. The barrel is fitted with a brass blade front sight, and a nitre blued adjustable rear sight is mounted on top of the receiver. The top barrel flat is roll-marked in four lines: "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./NEWHAVEN CONN/PATENT FEB.14.1854". The Volcanic Repeating Arms lever action carbines were a key step in the development of American firearms. The combinations of a lever action with integral multi-shot magazine and self-contained cartridge were a revolutionary development. Partial ownership of Volcanic Repeating Arms introduced shirt-maker Oliver Winchester to firearms manufacturing, and the evolution of the Volcanic lever action and integral magazine led to the development of the Henry rifle and the subsequent Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 Winchester rifles.

Class: Antique

Excellent with 90% plus of the original blue finish still remaining on the barrel with the balance a slightly thinning gray/brown patina. The receiver, side plates and buttplate all retain their original mustard yellow patina having aged correctly with the side plates still having never been removed. The hammer and lever retain 60% of its case colors. The breech bolt, cartridge elevator and rear sight retain 85% of their nitre blued finish. The walnut stock is also excellent and retains 95% plus of the original varnish finish overall showing some minor handling marks on both sides, with a heavier pressure dent on the left side of the stock. The screw heads in the action as well as the wood screws holding the buttstock and buttplate in place all retain 95% of their factory nitre blued finish with all the screw heads in excellent condition. This is an extremely high condition, late production Volcanic carbine.

Volcanic No.1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in New Haven, Connecticut c. 1857-58. The pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine, loading lever with round finger hole, brass frame and two-piece walnut flat bottom grips. The deletion of "VOLCANIC REPEATING ARMS CO." from the barrel legend occurred after Oliver Winchester assumed control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. and re-organized it as the New Haven Arms Company on May 1, 1857. The serial number, "305", is stamped on the lower left side of the butt underneath the grips and on the inside of each grip. All of the visible serial numbers match. Volcanic firearms are historically significant and represent an important step in the development of American repeating firearms and self-contained cartridges. The lever action and integral spring-loaded magazine introduced with Volcanic pistols and carbines served as the basic design for the Henry rifle and the Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles. Oliver Winchester's investment in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company eventually led to the establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

Class: Antique

Very fine. This pistol is all original and retains 70% of the high polish blue finish on the barrel/magazine. The barrel markings are crisp. 40% of the nitre blue finish remain on protected areas of the bolt, rear sight and lever. The very fine brass receiver has a very attractive, un-touched patina. The two-piece walnut grips are also in very fine condition and retain at least 90% of the original high polish piano finish with numerous dings visible on the butt of the right panel. Scarce Gutta Percha Cased Portrair of a Mounted U.S. Cavalryman

Lot # 1006 (Sale Order: 8 of 815)

Rare Gutta Percha Cased Image of a Mounted U.S. Cavalryman with Volcanic Pistol

The cavalryman is armed with a Volcanic pocket pistol and a Model 1840 or 1860 saber. There are gold high lights added to his buttons and sword handle, blue tinting on the pans, and some slight blush added to his cheeks. Under the picture is a sheet marked "GENUINE/UNION CASE,/IMPROVED./Fine Gilt and Burnished/Hinge./Scovill Mf'g Co." Images of mounted soldiers are very rare, especially compared to studio portraits, and would have required a very well behaved horse to avoid movement and the resulting blur. Men armed with Volcanic pistols in portraits are also incredibly rare given the limited number produced.

Class: Other

Very fine overall with mild storage wear. The case has some chipping at the corners. This would be an excellent addition to any Civil War collection and also well-suited for display with a Volcanic pocket pistol.

The wood is also very good with scattered minor dents, dings and scratches, and for the most part crisp checkering. The toe is cracked and has been reattached with two wood screws through the cleaning rod channel inside the buttstock. The markings remain clear. The action is fine.

Very Fine Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle with Desirable Octagon Barrel

This is an very fine example of an original Winchester Model 1866 lever action rifle manufactured in 1872 that is equipped with factory sling swivels on the buttstock and forend cap. It was a much improved version of the Henry rifle and featured a side loading port, solid magazine tube and a walnut forend that covered the rear of the magazine tube. They were extremely popular on the western frontier in the post-Civil War era and typically saw extremely heavy use. This features a 24 inch octagon barrel with full tubular magazine, fixed front sight and a first pattern, two position adjustable rear sight with the sight tangent marked "1-7". Factory Engraved Henry Deluxe Rifle, Serial Number 17

Lot # 1016 (Sale Order: 18 of 815)

Extraordinary Documented Historic Early Production Factory Presentation Engraved Silver-Plated New Haven Arms Co. Henry Deluxe Lever Action Rifle, Serial Number 17

Offered here is a first year production (1860) Henry deluxe lever action rifle featuring a factory engraved silver-plated frame. This rifle is identified and pictured in R.L. Wilson's book "Winchester Engraving" on page 15. Wilson links this rifle to Thomas A. McGrath, merchant and prominent citizen of Shelbyville, Kentucky. During the Civil War on August 24, 1864, McGrath and tailor J.H. Masonheimer fought off Confederate guerillas under the direction of local sympathizer Captain David Martin attempting to raid the Shelby County Courthouse for a cache of muskets and ammunition. Martin's failed raid left three of his men dead and McGrath with a slight head wound. McGrath did not live long after the war. He was shot in the back by Private John Lewis, Company E, 13th Heavy Artillery USCT, while attempting to protect his implement shop on May 19, 1865. Private Lewis was found guilty of murder and hung on June 13, 1865. The receiver, upper tang and buttplate heel feature the New Haven Arms factory scroll engraving on a punch dot background and double border. Among the scrollwork on the left side is an arched panel. A similar engraved Henry, which was presented to Major General James G. Blunt, is identified and pictured in “Winchester Engraving” on page 17. The barrel is fitted with a German blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards, and is marked "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT, 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT." The top of the frame has a dovetail slot for a sight. The rifle is not fitted with a sling swivel and sling hook loop which were optional on early production Henry rifles. The brass receiver and crescent buttplate are silver-plated, the barrel and integral 15-shot magazine are blue, and the hammer and lever are casehardened. The stock is well-figured, select grade walnut with a high polish piano finish. The serial number "17" is stamped on top of the barrel at the breech, on the left side of the lower tang, on the buttstock upper tang cut-out, on the three tang screws, on the two buttplate screws and buttplate. Other early production Henry rifles below serial number 20 are known to have been presented to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (serial number 1), U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (serial number 6), W.T. Moyer (serial number 7), Secretary of Navy Gideon Wells (serial number 9), Samuel J. Hoggson, engraver of many of the early Henry rifles (serial number 14) and General James Blunt (serial number 18) and possibly to editor George D. Prentice (serial number 19). These rifles have been well-documented and are surveyed in such books as R.L. Wilson’s “Winchester Engraving” and “Winchester: An American Legend” and Wiley Sword’s “The Historic Henry Rifle.” During the early days of production, New Haven Arms Co. gifted their Henry rifle as a way to court favors from influential individuals. The company made great headway in the city of Louisville, Kentucky, about 30 miles away from Shelbyville. Company salesman William C. Stanton had close ties with pro-Unionist and “Louisville Journal” editor George D. Prentice who cited the Henry “the most beautiful and efficient rifle we ever saw.” The efficiency of the Henry, continued Prentice, allowed one man armed with a Henry to be “equal to fifteen armed with [an] ordinary gun.” William Stanton’s efforts resulted in strong commercial sales in the Louisville region, and area dealerships like John M. Stokes & Son A.B. Semple & Sons advertised the Henry in the “Louisville Journal.” So impressed by the rifle, Prentice became a New Haven Arms Co. sales agent, locating his sales depot in the “Louisville Journal’s” office. By the fall of 1862, New Haven Arms Co. had sold around 900 Henrys with an estimated 280 rifles being purchased by Prentice. An elated Oliver Winchester could now promote the Henry rifle a success.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel and magazine retain 60% plus of original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The frame and buttplate retain 75% plus original silver plating with the balance an attractive aged patina. The stock is also very fine with a professionally repaired wrist break and chip near the toe and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent. This is a one-time opportunity to own an early production, factory engraved and silver-plated Henry deluxe rifle that falls into a serial number range of known rifles presented to the most influential members of Civil War era society. Writer is quite familiar with this extraordinary Henry rifle and can attest to its authenticity. Serial number 17 is a must have for the serious American arms collector!

Offered here is an exceedingly rare example of a first year production (1894) special order deluxe version of the most successful lever action rifle in history, the Winchester Model 1894. John Moses Browning's design has scarcely been changed between 1894 and today. It is one of about 155 Model 1894s built with a casehardened receiver. It is believed that only 16 of the 155 were deluxe versions such as this example. The accompanying two factory letters confirm the caliber, round barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman Jack front sight, half magazine and casehardened receiver. It was received in the warehouse on September 14, 1895, and shipped the same day. The top of the barrel has the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "30 W.C.F." at the breech. The barrel, magazine, dust cover and loading gate are blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle is all original and retains 40% plus of the original blue and color casehardened finish overall. The blue finish on the barrel, magazine and dust cover has mostly aged to a blue/brown patina. The finish has flaked on the left side of the barrel and magazine ahead of the barrel band. The top of the barrel has scattered spots of age discoloration. The Winchester legend and caliber designation are crisp. The loading gate has 50% of the niter blue finish. The casehardened finish on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever has faded to a smooth, mottled, gary patina. Significant amounts of the case colors remain in protected areas. The buttplate, typically, shows more wear than the other casehardened components and has aged to a mottled, dark gray patina. The highly figured, deluxe walnut stock and forearm remain in fine overall condition and retain much of the original piano finish with sharp checkering and only a few insignificant handling marks. This is a fine example of a scarce and fully documented deluxe Winchester Centennial Deluxe Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle.

Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Fancy Scarce And Documented

Lot # 1023 (Sale Order: 25 of 815)

Scarce Documented Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Fancy Lever Action Rifle

The letter describes the features as: "Rifle, 30 caliber" and "Fancy checkered stock". The letter further states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on April 3, 1903 and returned to the warehouse for repair in August 1905 and September 1906. The rifle has the 28-inch round barrel that was standard for caliber .30 Army rifles. This barrel is roll-stamped with the caliber designation "30 U.S." on the top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver; this designation and the fact that the rifle was manufactured in 1905 indicates it is chambered for the desirable .30-03 cartridge. The barrel has a braised, ramp front sight base with brass sight blade and a standard, sporting style, rear sight with serrated edges and screw-adjustable center insert. A Lyman adjustable receiver sight with extended locking lever is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" in two lines just behind the rear sight. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the second style Winchester legend with the "JAN. 25.98" two-line legend. The side of the rear sight is marked: "LYMAN". The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1895/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The serial number, "48867", is stamped across the bottom of the lower tang between the tang screws. The barrel, receiver, rear sight and lever have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The bolt and trigger have a high polish blue finish. The hammer and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are deluxe, highly figured, fancy grade walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and a high polish piano finish. The forearm tip has an ebony insert. The Winchester Model 1895 receiver was designed to handle high power cartridges, and the distinctive box magazine allowed the use of modern pointed bullets. Model 1895 rifles chambered for the .30-03 cartridge (30 Army) are particularly desirable. Model 1895 rifles with deluxe, fancy grade checkered stocks and forearms are scarce.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. This rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue finish. The barrel has 90% plus of the blue finish with the exception of a two-inch area on the top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight where the blue has thinned slightly. The finish on the top and upper right side of the receiver show handling wear, and there are some scattered patches of flaking on the sides and top of the lever. The bolt and trigger retain nearly all of the high polish blue. The hammer has nearly all of the muted case colors. The crescent buttplate shows typical handling wear and has a silver-gray patina with some rust and age discoloration on the heel and toe. The barrel and receiver markings are extremely sharp. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are in very fine-excellent condition. There is some finish loss and what appears to be an old repair on the right stock wrist between the checkered panel and the edge of the receiver. The balance of the stock and forearm retain nearly all of the original piano finish. The checkered panels show minimal handling wear. This is a very fine example of a scarce Winchester Model 1895 Fancy Sporting Rifle chambered for the desirable .30-03 cartridge.
