French M.1833 Boarding Cutlass

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 2 of 782)

French Model 1833 Sabre de Bord (Boarding Cutlass), by the Royal Armory at Chatellerault (1841). Sword measures 32'' overall with 26.75'' clip-point hand-forged saber bl...moreade. Spine measures 3/8'' wide at the guard. Both sides of blade with 1.5'' anchor motifs above inspector's hallmarks (poincons). Cast iron guard and grip. Original early black leather scabbard with frog stud on lacquered brass throat piece and similarly appointed chape with factory staple. Poincons indicate that this example was inspected by Director A. Belmont (1840-1841) and Controller S. Wideman (1839-1843). Wm. Gillkerson in ''Boarders Away'' (pg. 81) states, ''There is reason to belive a number of Model 1833 Sabre de Bord were purchased by the Confederate States Navy, although it is doubtful that they were so marked.'' Condition is excellent with light overall carbon spotting to blade. Markings are exceptionally cler. Iron grip and guard with some light chips to finish and mild patination overall. Scabbard is exceptional with tight stitching and very little losses to finish along top edge. Brass chape shows approx. 60% original varnish; throat shows approx. 40% with several dings. A lovely mid-19th Century Cutlass that may have run the blockade. Est.: $750-$1,000.

Pr. Rev'y War Era FL Skirmish Pistols - Hollingswo

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 5 of 782)

Pair of Revolutionary War Era Brass-Barreled Flintlock ''Skirmish'' Pistols, featured in the August 1982 Gun Report magazine as belonging to Col. Henry Hollingsworth, who...more served as Deputy Quartermaster to George Washington's Army. Pistols are approx. .70 cal., with 9'' half-octagon brass barrels, marked ''London'' on top flats with ''(crown)/V'' and ''(crown)/CP'' proofmarks; pineapple finials to both triggerguards which are lightly engraved; locks are marked ''K&C''. Interestingly, there are three lines or notches to the left side of each pistol just above the triggerguard. Col. Hollingsworth's service as a quartermaster during the Rev'y War is well-documented by the Library of Congress on its website (''Washington Papers''). One letter, written by Gen. George Washington to Col. Henry Hollingsworth from Valley Forge on the 16th of February, 1778, reads: ''Sir: I am under the painful necessity of informing you, that the situation of the Army is most critical and alarming for want of Provision, especially of the Meat kind.'' Included with this fine pair is a third Flintlock Flared Iron-Barreled Pistol, also mentioned in the Gun Report article by legendary gun dealer Ronald A. Ogan. This third pistol is marked on lightly engraved lock ''Jno Johns & Son'', with 6'' half-octagon flared barrel, with no other markings. The pair are in very good overall condition for their age showing a nice patina to both barrels and brass furniture. There are no cracks or breaks in the wood stocks, just the normal dings, marks and light gouges, and the aforementioned notches. The third pistol is also very good, showing nicely done carving to the top of the stock at tang, with one small crack at the left sideplate. Includes the Gun Report magazine from August 1982 which documents the significance of Col. Hollingsworth, who was responsible for the acquisition and movement of supplies for the Army in the critical location of Elk River between the Southern and Northern Colonies. Est.: $10,000-$12,000/lot. (Antique)

Colt ''Fluck'' Dragoon Percussion Revolver

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 17 of 782)

Colt ''Fluck'' Dragoon Percussion Revolver, #2799, .44 ball, 7.5'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, brass square triggerguard and backstrap, one-piece walnut grips,...more dovetailed front and rear sights to top of barrel assembly. Barrel marked ''Address Sam'l Colt New York City'' when read from right side. First recognized by arms collector John Fluck who determined this model as a distinct variation of the Dragoon, writing in past decades that these revolvers were made largely of old Walker Colt parts. It has later been proven that these rare Dragoons are in fact the true successor to the Walker and precede the First Model Dragoon. With probably only several hundred produced, between 30-50 of these rare large Colt percussion revolvers exist today. Mfg'd 1848. After the initial 1000 Walkers were delivered, these ''Fluck'' revolvers are, in fact, Colt's second contract of late 1847. In addition to these parts, leftover from Walker production, the only other feature found are the small format serial numbered die stamps used on both. Cylinder scene is visible. Condition is near fine retaining trace amounts of blue beneath loading lever and in protected areas. Originally thin and faint case colors have toned a silvery gray. Brass components fit well with marks from handling and minor scuffs overall. Grips are good with shrinkage at front and back strap and small losses at forward points near butt. Additional varnish has been added to original finish. Triggerguard screws may be later replacements. Buffalo hunt cylinder scene is mostly visible. Action is good, bore is fine. Est.: $18,000-$24,000. (Antique)

Colt First Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver, #7321, .44 ball, 7.5'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, square brass triggerguard and backstrap, one-piece walnut grip...mores. Barrel is marked ''Address Sam'l Colt New York City''. Seeing limited service at the end of the Mexican War, these pistols were again issued to U.S. Army Mounted Rifle Units at the beginning of the American Civil War. They also gained popularity in the Southwest U.S. after serving in the Mexican-American War. The Colt First Model Dragoon was considered one of the most powerful weapons of its time. This particular example has had light sympathetic restoration, including minor re-coloring, re-tracing to the barrel address, tightening to the wedge slot in the cylinder axle, and repair and re-fitting to the original grips. Mfg'd 1849. Light flash pitting to frame and cylinder. Five of the six touch holes remain clear. Ramrod hinge screw and wedge screw are later replacements. Action and bore are good. Colt Model 1860 Fluted Army Perc. Revolver

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 24 of 782)

Richmond Shipped Colt Model 1860 Fluted Army Percussion Revolver, #277, .44 ball, 7.5'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, iron backstrap with unnumbered brass trigge...morerguard. Shipped to Peter Williams and Company, Richmond, VA, on April 15, 1861 in a shipment of 472 guns. It is interesting to note that this is three days after the South attacked Fort Sumter and the exact date that Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling up 75,000 militiamen and summoning a special session of Congress to meet in the near future. There were two shipments totaling 500 of these revolvers, but before reaching Peter Williams all 500 guns were seized by the State of Virginia at the Adams Express Office on April 21, 1861 to be used by the state. It is unlikely that Colt was ever paid for these revolvers. Revolver is factory configured for a shoulder stock with NH inspector markings to triggerguard, backstrap and barrel assembly. Butt is additionally marked 1389 which may be a regimental rack number. With the exception of the unmarked triggerguard which appears original and the unmarked wedge also seeming original, all other visible numbers match. Colt may have overlooked these marking as they were in a hurry to fulfill this order as national events had very quickly escalated beyond anyone's control. Historians use the word ''rushed'' when describing this particular shipment. There is an extensive list of articles written on these Colt 1860 Armies that were shipped south over the years, beginning with an article in the April 23, 1861 Richmond Daily Dispatch, a letter from J.R. Anderson to Sam Colt also in April 1861, and all the way up to 1993 when R.L. Wilson discusses them in The Book of Colt Firearms. Condition is very good. Revolver shows moderate field use which is quite remarkable considering its time and place of shipment. Finish has toned with moderate scattered pitting to barrel and cylinder. Grips with oil darkening and light scratches. Good functioning action and very good bore. Est.: $6,000-8,000. (Antique)
