Special Order Late Production Winchester Model 92 Saddle Ring Deluxe Carbine

Manufactured in 1926. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the model, Winchester trade mark and caliber designation, and the right rear is marked with the two-line address. The top of the barrel and receiver are marked with the Winchester oval proof at the breech. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 92/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PAT. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, saddle ring staple and ring on the left side of the receiver and mounted with a nicely figured multi-point checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber Winchester grip cap and steel crescent buttplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine with 60% original blue finish remaining with some muzzle wear, some thinning on the barrel, a couple very small dings on the magazine tube and some thinning to a smooth gray on the receiver from normal handling over the years. There is also some wear caused by the saddle ring. The buttplate has a smooth mottled brown and gray patina. The refinished wood retains almost all of the finish and shows a few minor dents and handling marks. The checkering remains very crisp. The markings are sharp. The action is excellent. A very nice addition to any advanced Winchester collection.

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 985)

Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Unusual Sights and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1892. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .45-90 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock with oil finish and shotgun buttplate, half magazine, Lyman rear and beaded knife blade front sight ("same as Rocky Mountain front sight, flat top sporting rear 'U' notch sight"). The elevation adjustable rear sight is unusual in that the sight aperture is a large square block with "U" notch and two silver inlaid sight lines. The dovetailed Lyman front sight has a sighting bead. There is a tang peep sight. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "45-90 WCF" at the breech. The lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and the serial number. The highly figured and checkered stock has an ebony insert on the bottom of the pistol grip. "486S XXX" is marked on the left side of the lower tang, "486" is marked on the stock inlet, and "486" is marked on the back of the steel shotgun buttplate.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel retains 50% plus original blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown patina. There are some dings visible around right side of sight dovetail on barrel. The forend cap, receiver, hammer, and lever retain 70% original case colors with the balance a silvered out gray. The buttplate is a mixture of original blue finish and smooth brown and gray patinas. The wood is also very fine with a long horizontal deep gouge on lower left checkered wrist, otherwise some minor handing marks and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent.

Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Rifle, Letter

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 985)

Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Rare 32 Inch Octagonal Barrel and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1884 as a deluxe third model (dust cover guide rail integral to the receiver and dust cover featuring serrated finger grip on the rear) variation of the Model 1873 rifle with rare special order features such as a 32 inch barrel and single set trigger. Both of these features are confirmed in the factory letter. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a 32 inch octagon barrel in .38 caliber, set trigger, checkered stock, and globe and graduated peep sights when received in the warehouse on January 16, 1884, and shipped the next day. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address/King's improvement patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight and "38-CAL" at the breech. The brass cartridge elevator is marked "38 CAL." The serial number is marked on the lower tang directly behind the lever latch. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873." The rifle is fitted with a globe front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight, and long range tang peep sight. Mounted on highly figured checkered walnut forearm and straight grip stock. The buttstock is fitted with a crescent buttplate featuring a compartment holding a 5-piece cleaning rod.

Class: Antique

Very good. The rifle retains scattered traces of original blue finish and silvered out original case colors in the protected areas with the balance a mottled brown-gray patina. The refinished wood is also very good with a missing sizeable surface chip on the stock wrist (right side), a number of minor dings and scratches, and some blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. The set trigger does not function, but the action cycles properly. A deluxe Model 1873 rifle with factory documented special order features would be a welcomed addition to any Winchester lever action collection.

Excellent Documented Special Order, Winchester Deluxe Model 1892

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 985)

Excellent Documented Special Order, Winchester Deluxe Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle with Extra Long 28 Inch Barrel and Factory Letter

This rifle is accompanied by a factory letter that describes this Model 1892 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 25/20, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Length: 28 inches, Trigger: Set" and "Fancy stock, Checkered stock". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on March 24, 1905. The rifle has a full octagon, extra long, 28-inch barrel with full length magazine. Any extra long barrel is very rare on a Model 1892 rifle, particularly in a rifle chambered for the 25/20 cartridge. Non-standard length barrels were discontinued by Winchester in 1908 due to lack of demand. The barrel has a "Semi-Jack" front sight with brass bead and a sporting style buckhorn rear sight with screw-adjustable insert. A Lyman folding combination sight with coarse knurled stem is mounted on the receiver tang. The receiver has rare double set triggers. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grain, 3X walnut with checkered panels and a high gloss piano finish. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, bolt and set-triggers have a blue finish. The loading gate is niter blue. The hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.PATENTED OCTOBER 14, 1884." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "25-20 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat behind the rear sight. The serial number is roll-stamped across the front edge of the bottom of the receiver.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent. This rifle retains 95% plus of the bright original blue finish. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, bolt and receiver have nearly all of the blue finish. There are traces of finish wear along the edges of the receiver and a single, shallow scratch on either side of the receiver. The loading gate is partially coated with old grease but has at least 95% of the fire blue finish. The hammer, lever and crescent buttplate retain 80% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The highly figured, fancy grain, walnut stock and forearm are in excellent condition with sharp checkering and nearly all of the original piano finish. The only exception is two shallow 1/4-inch dents on the left side of the butt stock. The barrel markings and serial numbers are crisp. This is an excellent example of a rare Deluxe Model 1892 Fancy Sporting Rifle with 28-inch special order barrel.

This excellent original Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle was manufactured in 1869, and has the Third Model features which include receiver with less drop ahead of the hammer and external serial number stamped in block numerals on the lower tang behind the trigger. The receiver has the single upper tang screw and flare at the junction with the forearm introduced on Second Model 1866 rifles. Special order sling swivels are present on the forearm cap and stock. The full octagon barrel has a brass front sight blade and Henry style folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight has a 900 yard center notch with slide stop screw below the notch. The brass forearm cap is the first pattern with retaining screw that passes through the lower portion of the barrel. The receiver has an indented loading port cover retained by a single screw. The hammer spur has borderless hand cut knurling. The brass crescent buttplate has a hinged trapdoor. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED -MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" in serif letters ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped in block letters on the lower tang behind the trigger. A "B" inspection mark is stamped behind the serial number. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver, forearm cap and crescent buttplate. The barrel, magazine and sling swivels are blue. The loading port cover is a fiery niter blue. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are oil finished, straight grain, American walnut.

Class: Antique

Excellent. This exceptional rifle shows only the slightest handling and storage wear. 90% plus of the original blue finish is present on the barrel, magazine and band. Wear is limited to some very insignificant thinning on the right side of the magazine at the cap and the edges of the barrel muzzle. The barrel edges are sharp, and the Winchester legend is extremely crisp. The rear sight is original to the rifle and remains in excellent condition. 80% of the original niter blue finish remains on the loading port. The hammer, trigger, lever and lever latch retain at least 75% of the casehardened finish. The very attractive receiver, forearm cap and buttplate are all in excellent condition with a stunning, un-touched, patina. The receiver has perfect side plate joints and is free from nicks or scratches. The stock and forearm are in perfect condition with nearly all of the original finish. This is an extraordinary example of a Winchester Third Model 1866 lever action rifle that would be extremely difficult to improve upon.

Engraved New Haven Arms Company Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 985)

Engraved New Haven Arms Company Henry Lever Action Rifle

This is a very attractive example of an engraved Henry Rifle. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, with the second pattern "HENRY'S PATENT.OCT.16.1860./MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN.CT." in Roman letters ahead of the rear sight and the serial number behind it. The engraving features large floral designs on both sides of the forward portion of the receiver with punch dot background and smaller open scrollwork on a punch-dot background on the rest of the receiver and buttplate. There is an animal scene in an oval amid the scroll on each side of the receiver, a deer on the left side and a bear on the right side. Class: Antique

Very good as period engraved and partially refinished, with the barrel and lever showing 95% of the current blue finish, with some minor dings and a small amount of minor finish over pitting on the barrel and rear sight. The barrel marking is a little faint, but legible. The frame and buttplate are fine with an attractive even, untouched aged "mustard yellow" patina. The engraving remains crisp. Stock is very good as a refinished replacement, with some minor dents and dings. There is a little play in the lever; otherwise, the action is fine. A very nice engraved Henry Rifle.

This is a super rare example of a highly Special Order Winchester 1876 lever action rifle in the extremely scarce 50-95 Winchester Express cartridge that was manufactured in late 1881. The rifle is fitted with a 26 inch round barrel with a raised matte rib. The top of the barrel is marked "WINCHESTER-REPEATING ARMS- NEW HAVEN CT./KING’S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED, MARCH 29, 1866. OCT 16, 1860", and the initials "D.O.K." are marked on top of the barrel near the breech. The right side of the barrel at the breech is marked "50", and "95" is on the left side. The barrel is fitted with a see through style front peep sight, a rare leveling bubble mounted ahead of the rear sight (covering a small portion of the address/patent marking), and a folding ladder/buck horn rear sight. The top of the dust cover is marked "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/50 CAL. 95 GRS.", and the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is marked "50-95". There were only approximately 64,000 made before the introduction of the newer improved 1886 rifle, making any 1876 rifle very desirable with a deluxe special order rifle such as this one even more scarce.

Class: Antique

The receiver retains 20% of the original case colors mostly concentrated in the protected areas with the balance a smooth silver gray. The hammer and lever have a smooth gray patina. Exceptional and Attractive New Haven Arms Co. Civil War

Lot # 10 (Sale Order: 10 of 985)

Exceptional and Attractive New Haven Arms Co. Civil War Production Henry Lever Action Rifle

This fine original Henry Lever Action Rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in July 1864. The rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate with octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel/magazine and bolt are blued, and the hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The straight grain American walnut stock is oil finished. The barrel has the late style, square back, nickel-silver front sight blade and a dovetail mounted, folding leaf rear sight. The sight leaf has an elevator bar with rounded ends, elevator bar stop screw and 900 yard center notch. The second style receiver lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail found on Henry receivers up to about serial number 3000. The bottom of the receiver has the late, beveled, magazine follower cut, and the magazine has the large diameter brass follower. The crescent buttplate is the second style with sharp pointed heel introduced around serial number 5100 and late, small diameter, buttplate screws. The buttplate has a hinged brass trapdoor. The left side of the stock and barrel have a factory sling swivel and screw mounted loop for a sling hook. The hook loop is fitted with a ring. The sling swivel and hook loop were originally special order features but were standard by early 1864. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the second style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16, 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CT." in two lines. The second style legend, introduced in the late 3000 serial number range, is larger with all serif letters than the smaller, first style legend that used a combination of serif and block letters. The serial number is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the lower left side of the receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The buttplate and tang screws are, correctly, not serial numbered. The small "H" sub-inspection mark of B. Tyler Henry is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch. Experts believe that most Henry rifles made prior to 1865 were privately purchased by individual federal soldiers who wanted the unprecedented firepower offered by the 15-shot Henry repeating rifle. The Henry rifle was especially popular with soldiers in Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky regiments. Many of these soldiers purchased Henry rifles from dealers in Louisville, Kentucky, and other mid-west cities in 1864 using re-enlistment bounties.

Class: Antique

Fine. This rifle retains 30% plus of the bright original blue finish, mostly on protected areas of the barrel/magazine. The balance of the barrel/magazine has aged to a plum patina. The edges are sharp. The barrel legend and serial number are clear. The front and rear sight appear to be original to the rifle. Wear on the barrel/magazine is limited to scattered age spotting. The bolt has 20% of the original blue finish. The hammer, trigger and lever retain at least 60% of the muted case colors. The bottom of the lever has some scattered age spotting. The receiver and buttplate are both in very fine condition with a mellow, untouched patina. The receiver side plate joints are perfect and wear is limited to few shallow scratches on the bottom of the receiver and cartridge elevator. The buttplate has a few very minor dents and scratches. The stock is in very fine condition and retains most of the original oil finish; wear is limited to a few insignificant handling and storage marks. This is a really outstanding example of a Civil War production Henry rifle that is in far better condition than most 1864 production Henry rifles. If you want to own a fine, totally original Henry rifle, look no further!

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. 85% plus of the original blue is present on the barrel. The markings are sharp. The blue on the magazine is thin and has mostly aged to a plum-blue tone. There is a small area of very light pitting on the left side and bottom of the magazine below the barrel band. The bolt retains 60% of the blue finish. Most of the fire blue finish is present on the loading port cover. The barrel bands retain 75% of the casehardened finish with silvering on the contact points on either side. The hammer, trigger, lever and lever latch have 90% plus of the casehardened finish. The brass receiver and buttplate are in very fine-excellent condition and have a mellow, untouched patina. The receiver sideplate joints are perfect, and the receiver is free from scratches or handling marks The buttplate has several very insignificant handling marks but remains in excellent condition. The lightly re-oiled stock and forearm remain in very fine condition. Nearly all Winchester Model 1866 rifles and carbines show service wear. Model 1866 Carbines in particular saw hard use as "working guns" and are scarce in fine or better condition. An early production Model 1866 Carbine in excellent condition like this example is extremely rare. It would be hard to find a better example of a Winchester Second Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine.
