Fine George Gibbs Takedown Magazine Sporting Rifle On Steyr Model 1903 Action

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 1062)

serial #2565A, 256 Gibbs Magnum, 26" barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a wonderful rifle which bears action number "2565A" and barrel number "B5420". The barrel is not marked with Gibb's address but the caliber designation is engraved "FOR GIBBS' / 256 MAGNUM / CARTRIDGE ONLY" on boss at breech adjacent to the London nitro proofs. The metal surfaces of the rifle retain about 95% original blue finish overall with loss in the typical wear spots and on high edges with some flaking on the butterknife bolt handle. The stock is of European walnut and rates excellent with 97% original finish remaining and with strong clean checkering. The barrel is held in placed by a large set screw entering from the bottom of the stock just ahead of floorplate and also a protruding pin and corresponding hole to accept in the flat steel stock plates at takedown junction, so the forend must be removed to facilitate take down. The stock features a steel gripcap with compartment which is empty and retains lots of bright original case color. The buttplate is a checkered steel shotgun style buttplate with both screws indexed properly and checkered as one with the buttplate. The toeline of the buttstock shows a silver oval monogram plate which remains plain along with a sling eye, corresponding sling eye is neatly affixed to the bottom of the barrel. The rifle is sighted with a ramp mounted beaded blade front with single standing and four folding leaf express rear sight graduated for 100, 300, 500, 700 and 900 yards. The 256 Gibbs Magnum performs similar to the 257 Roberts but will handle a heavier projectile giving it better penetration on larger game. A wonderful British magazine sporting rifle built on a popular and proven split bridge action. (18865-71) {C&R}

Custom Mauser Model 1909 Magazine Sporting Rifle by George Schielke

Lot # 29 (Sale Order: 29 of 1062)

serial #8589, 270 win, 22” custom sporter contour barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely rifle retain about 98-99% excellent-quality maker blue with the bolt body and extractor neatly polished bright. The classic style stock is of very nicely figured fiddleback-grain American walnut and rates very good plus with the expected minor dings and handling marks that come with a hunted arm. The stock features flawlessly executed borderless panels at the grip with a wraparound pattern on the forearm and has a very nice flared left-side cheekpiece. The length of pull to the checkered steel Niedner buttplate is 13 3/8” and there is a checkered blued steel pistolgrip cap and gold oval monogram plate along the toeline which is un-engraved. The arm has been neatly drilled and tapped and currently supports a steel one piece Buehler base with 1” Buehler rings. These actions featured a hinged floorplate and an extremely nice sporting bolt handle has been fitted with teardrop checkered panels top and bottom of knob. A fully adjustable Jaeger trigger has been fitted and tuned for a crisp clean, about 4# let off and a model 70-style wing safety has been neatly fitted to the bolt shroud; the thumbpiece has been removed from the boltstop and the front face very neatly checkered for a streamlined appearance. The arm comes with a spare 257 Roberts 22” barrel of identical contour, also with a bright excellent bore, both are maker marked at top dead center and both are neatly engraved with their respective calibers. Each barrel features an index mark along with a .190” deep .200” diameter hole on its bottom dead center beneath the chamber area, which would accommodate a spanner wrench for removing and installing the barrels (precluding the need for an elaborate barrel vice set up), while the spanner is not present, one could easily be made by any gunsmith worth their apron. George Schielke of Titusville New Jersey was a gifted craftsman and extremely well-thought-of turning out some very lovely sporters in the 60s, this example dated July 28, 1963 in the barrel channel. A handsome rifle with graceful lines and flawless execution, shouldering as a natural extension of the hunter. Top-notch. (38893-4) {C&R}

Lot # 30 (Sale Order: 30 of 1062)

serial #4119, .44 cal., 7 1/2" barrel with an about good bore that shows a good deal of pitting, mostly in breech half. This is a nice honest Colt with all matching numbers on the barrel, frame, triggerguard, backstrap, back of cylinder, wedge and underside of arbor. The frame bears standard markings as does the barrel and cylinder with all of these markings remaining clear and legible. Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 31 (Sale Order: 31 of 1062)

serial #315991, 32 WCF, 5 1/2” barrel with a very good bore which shows evident rifling but with scattered oxidation and scattered pitting. The barrel, ejector rod and cylinder shows some generous trace original blue but are primarily a faded plum brown and pewter patina, also with the minor scattered handling marks one would expect from the years on a field-used arm. The frame is a mottled mix of fading silver and gray case-hardening with some generous colors in the pinched portion below the barrel, the hammer showing some generous trace case colors as well. The straps and guard have toned to a smooth plum brown patina showing some minor impact marks on the butt. The revolver wears a pair of checkered hard rubber Rampant Colt grips which are un-numbered but fit rather well, the metal being slightly proud at the butt. Numbers are matching on frame, triggerguard and backstrap and the gun times and locks up properly. An honest and still attractive Single Action Army which left the blue dome in 1910, that likely could still be taken to the range and enjoyed. (38737-174) {C&R} [Dr. Louis C. March Jr. Collection]

Colt Single Action Army Long Flute Revolver

Lot # 33 (Sale Order: 33 of 1062)

serial #331360, 32 WCF, 4 3/4” barrel with an about very good bore which shows evident rifling but with pitting its full-length. The barrel, ejector rod and cylinder are all a plum brown and gray patina with some generous trace blue within the flutes. They exhibit the expected minor handling dings that come from the years with some minor oxidation and light pitting present on the cylinder; the left side of the barrel shows a prominent rub mark or 1 1/2” long ding or abrasion just below the caliber marking. The frame is a mottled smoky mix of silvery case-hardening, dull gunmetal gray and a soft brown patina showing some trace colors. The hammer is similar and the straps have toned to a pewter and brown. Revolver wears a pair of checkered hard rubber Rampant Colt grips that rate good and are worn nearly smooth, they are un-numbered on the interior with the left grip being marked “4/22/1916” with the name “JF Luhan” scratched on their interior. It would appear immediately as though there was a JF Luhan who was a doctor in New York and had a treatise published in the American Medical Journal in 1906, he was born around 1867 and died in 1931. Further research may prove or disprove this as the owner of this revolver. The ejector rod head is a replacement and the gun seems to function properly mechanically. (38737-30) {C&R} [Dr. Louis C. The hammer is a smoky mottled case-hardened patina with remnants of pale fire temper blue on the trigger, both straps are toning to a plum and pewter with strong original blue at the root of the guard. The guard and the backstrap are numbered 113163/ “G” and 131975 “K” respectively. The underside of the barrel shows a remnant of Carrs marking and a small “P” but the serial number is no longer discernible. The one piece walnut grip rates very good to perhaps very good plus showing “R.A.C.” markings on left and right of the butt and a good 1903 stamping with the right side “RAC” cartouche. The interior shows a couple of different ink-pen numbers which are not readily discernible but seem to be numbered to a different gun. The included factory letter shows shipment in 1883 to the U.S. government inspector at the Colt plant and further goes on to state that the arm was refurbished by Colt later and subsequently re-shipped to the Commanding Officer, Springfield Armory, April 17, 1903. The cylinder basepin head is somewhat scarred up and there are the remnants of a light seven-digit number on the bottom flat of the butt, this could be neatly dressed and removed without affecting the serial number, by someone who knew their business. The gun seems to function well mechanically and has good lockup. A very attractive Artillery Model revolver overall retaining a good deal of very nice original Colt finish. (38864-19) {ANTIQUE}

Scarce French System E. Turbiaux Protector Palm Pistol

Lot # 49 (Sale Order: 49 of 1062)

serial #5405/5724, 6mm RF, 1 1/2" part round part octagon barrel with a lightly oxidized bore showing faint rifling. The metal surfaces of this palm pistol retain about 98% original nickel finish showing a couple tiny areas flaked to gray patina, light freckling and some overall areas of clouding. The top cover is marked "LE PROTECTOR / SYSTEME E. TURBIAUX" with the reverse marked "Bte S.G.D.G. EN FRANCE ET L'ETRANGER / PARIS". The smooth black hard rubber grip inserts remain in near excellent condition showing a few light scratches and some minor discoloration on the top cover. Rare Whitney Burgess Morse First Model 1878 Lever Action Sporting Rifle

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 50 of 1062)

serial #109, 45-70, 28" octagon barrel with full magazine and a very good bore. This early rifle shows the extra gas escape hole in top of dust cover along with the two added reinforcing screws as is typically found on these guns along with the early wedge fastened nosecap. This appears to be a special- order rifle as it has a nickel plated buttplate and nosecap along with upgraded wood. The rifle remains in nice condition with the barrel and magazine retaining about 40% original blue finish blending with a gray brown patina and a scattered patch or two of light pitting. The action retains about 80% original blue with the primary loss being on the belly and high edges and the balance due to even light thinning and light scratches. There are also some halos around some of the frame screws where they were removed with too large a screw driver bit. The walnut buttstock and forend are of nicely figured American black walnut and rate near excellent with 90% original finish remaining. The forend shows light carry wear. The rifle has all matching numbers on the frame, barrel, buttstock, tangs and buttplate. The rifle is sighted with a Beach style combination front, standard open sporting rear and a period tang mounted peepsight. These early rifles did not come ready to accept tang sights so this rifle has a pair of period added holes in the top tang, one passing through the Burgess patent markings. This is an extremely rare and extremely early Burgess Morse sporting rifle. (18315-6LTS37) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection]
