U.S. INSPECTED HENRY LEVER ACTION REPEATING RIFLE.

Lot # 3006 (Sale Order: 7 of 675)

Cal. 44 HRF. S# 3222. Bbl. 24 1/4" octagon w/ integral mag. Front portion of bbl. is shroud that turns for loading. Brass blade front sight w/ folding leaf rear sight. A total of 1,731 Henry's were acquired by the U.S. government between 1862-1865, most in S# range 3,000-4,200. An article in "The Gun Report Vol. II No. 6" titled "The Dilemma of the Martially Marked Henry Rifle" by John G. Hamilton states the following: "All of the rifles cataloged to date have had serial numbers in the 3,000 to 4,000 range. The U.S. Ordnance Department purchased 302 rifles during the period from July through October in 1863, & this group of rifles probably had serial numbers in the above mentioned range. This may well be the only group of rifles that were inspected and stamped w/ the inspector's initials. This would account for the overall rarity if the martially marked Henry rifle & the small number of such rifles cataloged over such a long period of time." Stock retains the outline of the cartouche. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: included is an article by C.R. Suydam detailing his prior ownership of this rifle. Photocopies of the October 1985 & November 1986 issues of "The Gun Report" w/ articles pertaining to the Henry rifle.
