SWORD ATTRIBUTED TO PRUSSIAN FIELD MARSHALL WILHELM VON HAHNKE.

Lot # 2008 (Sale Order: 8 of 466)

Court sword attributed to Prussian Field Marshall Wilhelm von Hahnke with a 34" triple-etched blade with moderate to heavy freckling, sharpened on half of the blade, but especially near the tip which has been damaged. Moderate level of scratches, with a "Eisenhauer" etched on the blade and what appears to be an early "Eickhorn" marking consisting of their trademark squirrel. Brass fittings retain only tiny remnants of their gilt finish. Wire wrapped grip and Prussian Garde emblem appear to be undamaged. Gold bullion portepee is attached. Dry leather scabbard is in good condition with less than 10% of it black finish remaining, and the stitching running the full length is not intact. Brass fittings have heavy patina with numerous dents. There is a 4-line inscription on 1 side of the cross guard of which 3 lines are legible. It states that "Prinz Wilhelm von Preussen" presented the sword to "von Hahnke" in "1851", with the second line illegible. On the other side of the cross guard it states "Generalfeldmarshall von Hahnke, 1851-1863, Jerusalen Reise, 1898". This inscription is clearly over earlier wear on the cross guard, and as von Hahnke was promoted to Generalfeldmarshall in 1905, it has to have been done after 1905. A sword to a distinguished Prussian officer who is easily researched. CONDITION: Very good overall. WZ Blade Length: 34" Overall Length: 41 - 1/2" Paperwork: Provenance Condition: Dimensions: Length: 41 - 1/2".

THIRD REICH EARLY PARTIAL ROHM SA DAGGER

Plated nickel steel fittings have a nice age patina throughout, with a couple of light scrapes and tiny dings near the tip. Correct hangar is attached. CONDITION: Overall fair to good. WZ Blade Length: 8 - 1/2" Overall Length: 13 - 1/4" Condition: Dimensions: Length: 13 - 1/4".

CORRECTION: The provenance included with this lot is a letter that was given to the consigner by the veteran that brought this dagger home from World War II. A picture of the letter is included in the sale. The letter is dated 3/26/80 and reads: "Dear Pete: I was with company A of the 78th armd. med. Bn." (78th Armored Medical Battalion). "as I remember we were in action around [illegible] (possibly Nennig or Hemmingen) Germany giving support to combat company A of the 7th armored infantry battalion. It was there we were picking up the wounded to send back to the aid station where I came across the officer's dagger which I found laying on the ground next to a body. I don't know if some else had it + (and) lost it or how it got there so I picked it up as a souvenir + (and) kept it with me until I returned to the states in 1946 + (and) had it in a locker all these years. Frank Rossi". Photo added.
