Documented Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Arapahoe County Inscription and Factory Letter
This is a nice example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1893 and shipped from the warehouse in 1894. The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine, loading gate and bolt; the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The left side of the receiver is engraved "Arapahoe County" in script. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN, U.S.A.". , "40-82 W.C.F." is marked on top at the breech, "-MODEL 1886-" on the upper tang and the serial number is marked on the lower tang behind the lever, and marked "PAT, OCT. 14, 1884 / JAN. 20, 1885" directly behind the trigger. The barrel is equipped with a dovetailed silver blade front and adjustable rear buckhorn sights, full magazine and mounted with a smooth forearm with an iron end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, rifle configuration, 40/82 caliber, round barrel, plain trigger, engraved "Arapahoe Co. and that it was received and shipped on July 14, 1894 on order number 16557 with 49 other arms.

Exquisite One of a Kind Custom Engraved Gold and Nickel Plated Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle With Carved Ivory Stock and Forearm Relief
Originally manufactured in 1883, this Third Model was subsequently exquisitely custom embellished and mounted with finely detailed carved pre-ban, legally imported elephant ivory forearm and stock. The rifle originally was equipped with a round barrel and straight grip stock with a shotgun buttplate. The barrel, full magazine, rear sight adjuster, lever and hammer are nickel plated and the forend cap, front and rear sights, receiver, dust cover, magazine band, screw and cap, and crescent buttplate are gold plated. The barrel features floral scroll and punch dot patterns as well as fancy triple figure 8 designs accented with floral patterns on each side and scallop border on the side flats. The two line Winchester address/King's patent marking has a large arrow separating the lines. The forend cap, receiver, dust cover, lever, hammer and buttplate feature spectacular full floral scroll and punch dot engraving with a cowboy and Indian battling on each side of the receiver, a buffalo skull on the dust cover and an Indian holding a buffalo skull above his head on the cartridge elevator. The sides of the hammer and the buttstock compartment door have floral and feather designs. The forearm is finely checkered with floral scroll border and the same figure 8 pattern on the bottom center. The stock is beautifully relief carved in fine detail. The right side recreates Frederick Remington's famous painting "A Dash for The Timber" which was painted by Remington in 1890. (The painting is currently on display in the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas). Very Fine Special Order Winchester Third Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Casehardened Receiver and Factory Letter
This is an example of a highly desirable third Model Winchester 1873 Rifle with Cody Firearms Museum letter. The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on July 28, 1886 and returned to the factory for repair on September 2, 1887 (writer has no explanation for the aforementioned notation as all of the features check out). The Winchester records do not indicate the nature of the repair. The Cody letter describes the rifle finish as "casehardened" and states that the rifle had a round barrel, plain trigger and 1/2 magazine. The rifle has a round, blued, barrel fitted with a dovetailed, "Rocky Mountain" front sight and a sporting style rear sight and a blued half-magazine. A folding peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle has a casehardened forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate. The buttplate has a sliding brass trap. The receiver has the Third Model integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serriated edges. The stock and forearm are walnut with a varnished finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN.CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT- PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." ahead of the rear sight. The top of the barrel is marked: "44 CAL" just in front of the receiver. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is engraved: "44 CAL". The serial number, "206006B" is located on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch.

This is an exceptional original example of a Winchester Model 1895 Flat-Side Rifle that was manufactured in 1896. The rifle has a blue finish on the distinctive flat side, receiver, barrel, loading lever and magazine. The hammer, trigger, loading lever linkage and crescent buttplate have a casehardened finish. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The distinctive Model 1895 forearm has a factory, ebony, insert. The 26-inch octagon barrel has a Lyman 'Winchester Express" front sight with ivory bead and a sporting style rear sight. The rifle is fitted with a Lyman "WR-WT" receiver sight. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. - " in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "40-72 W.C.F." is roll stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is marked: "WINCHESTER/- MODEL 1895 -" in two lines. "PAT. NOV. 5. 1895/ -NOV. 12. 1895-" is stamped in two lines on the trigger linkage behind the trigger. The serial number, "2593" is stamped on the lower barrel tang. The flat-side receiver was used only on the first 5000 Model 1895 Rifles; examples in high condition are scarce.

Condtion: Excellent. The rifle retains nearly 95% of the original blue finish on the barrel, bolt and high polished blue flat-side receiver. This Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle was manufactured in 1898. The rifle has a 26-inch full octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel is fitted with a Lyman "Hunting Front Sight" with ivory bead and sporting style rear sight. The barrel, magazine tube, bolt and loading gate cover have a blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate have a color case-hardened finish. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURE BY THE / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation, ".45-70" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-" and the lower tang is stamped with the 1894 and 1895 patent dates behind the trigger with the serial number, "116753" located between the tang screws.

Condtion: Excellent The rifle retains 95% of the original blue and 85% bright casehardened finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and buttplate have vivid case colors with very little finish wear or silvering. The barrel and magazine tube have more than 90% of the original blue finish with some scattered, minor, pitting on the barrel near the muzzle. The bolt and loading lever cover have 95% or more of the niter blue finish. The stock and forearm are in very fine condition. There is some finish wear on the bottom of the forearm and several minor handling marks on the stock. The barrel and receiver tang markings are crisp. The bore is bright. This is an excellent example of a Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with very desirable, early, casehardened receiver.

The letter describes this rifle as "casehardened" with a round barrel and plain trigger and states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on November 22, 1882. The rifle barrel, magazine, dust cover and loading gate are blued. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate have a casehardened finish. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The rifle has a round barrel and full length magazine. The barrel is fitted with a dovetailed, fixed, front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style rear sight. The third style receiver has an integral dust cover rail and dust cover with seriated edges. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trap. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./ KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1865. OCTOBER 16.1860.". The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "- MODEL 1873-" with foliate lettering. The serial number, "103453A" is stamped on the lower tang behind the loading lever latch. There are no caliber markings on the barrel or cartridge elevator. Winchester Model 1873 Rifles with casehardened receivers are rare and extremely desirable.

The stock and distinctive forearm are straight grain walnut with a varnished finish. The forearm tip has an ebony insert. The barrel has dovetailed front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. - " ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "38-72 W.C.F" is stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER / -MODEL 1895-" in two lines. The two-line patent date "-NOV.5.1895/NOV.12.1895-" is stamped on the trigger plate and the serial number, "4409" is stamped on the lower receiver tang.

Condtion: Very fine. The barrel retains 75% of the slightly faded original blue finish with some thinning along the top. The receiver has nearly 85% of the high polish blue with finish wear along the upper and lower edges. The bottom of the magazine and sides of the loading lever have moderate handling wear and have faded to a blue-brown patina. The rear portion of the magazine and loading lever mechanism have the cycling wear found on nearly all Model 1895 rifles. The case colors on the crescent buttplate have faded to a silver gray. The stock and forearm are very fine with most of the original varnish finish and only minor handling wear. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. This is a very early and desirable Winchester Model 1895 Flat-Side Sporting Rifle in very good to excellent condition.

Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine
This is an example of a Winchester Third Model 1866 Carbine that was manufactured in 1869. The carbine has the distinctive brass receiver, round barrel with full length magazine, barrel band with integral front sight, saddle ring on the left side of the frame and walnut stock with crescent brass buttplate. The carbine has a hammer spur with coarse knurling and no borders and small loading lever. The rear sight is a period replacement. The serial number, "43504" is stamped on the lower receiver tang ahead of the trigger. A small "B" is stamped behind the serial number. The lightly stamped barrel markings are no longer, which is typical of many Model 1866 Carbines that saw even moderate use.

Condtion: Fair. The barrel and magazine have a smooth gray patina with some scattered age discoloration. The barrel bands have scattered pitting and light scratches. The loading lever and hammer have a brown patina with light pitting on the hammer. The brass receiver and buttplate have been polished and show moderate to heavy wear. The receiver has numerous slight dents and scratches which are concentrated around the screws and the edges of the side plates. The letter "T" is lightly scratched in the left side plate. The buttplate shows the scratches and dents associated with actual use. The period replacement stock and forearm have been lightly sanded and refinished and are in fair condition. This is a solid and good looking example of a desirable, 1869 production Winchester Model 1866 Carbine.

Manufactured in 1894. This is an example of a Third Model 1873 variation with the distinctive integral dust cover rail machined to the top of the receiver. It has the standard two line barrel flat address/King's improvement patent dates marking ahead of the adjustable buckhorn rear sight and "44 W.C.F." at the breech. "44 CAL" is engraved on the brass cartridge elevator and "MODEL 1873" is on the upper tang. Marble Sheard front sight, full length magazine tube, smooth forearm and straight grip stock with steel forend cap and steel crescent buttplate with compartment. Included is the original 4 piece iron cleaning rod in the butt.

Smooth straight grip stock with Schnabel forearm with ebony tip and a crescent buttplate.

This is a very fine example of a special order Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle that was manufactured in 1889. The rifle has a special order, 28-inch, full octagon, barrel fitted with a sporting type rear sight and nickel-silver, fixed blade, front sight and full-length magazine. The pistol grip stock and forearm are highly figured burl walnut with checkered panels and a high polish varnish finish. The stock has a crescent steel buttplate and ebony inlay on the pistol grip. The barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate are blued. The forearm cap, receiver, loading lever, hammer and butt-plate have a color casehardened finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "40-65 W.C.F." is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The top of the receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The lower receiver tang is stamped with the 1894 and 1895 patent dates behind the trigger end inscribed with the serial number "28716" between the tang screws.

Scarce and Desirable Framed Winchester Double W Cartridge Display Board
The board is mounted in 3" flat wood frame, 57" wide by 39 1/2" tall, with a gold painted border around the 48 3/4"x 31 1/4" green board. In the center is a vignette of two Winchester-armed hunters behind a dead bear in a woodland scene, which is flanked with a moose head and a mallard in flight. Over 100 cartridges, bullets and primer tins are arranged in the "Double W" pattern. Marked "FORBES CO. BOSTON" in the lower right hand corner, with a paper label on the back reading "PRESENTED WITH COMPLIMENTS/ of the/ WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co/ PLEASE HANG IN A PROMINENT PLACE".

Very Fine Deluxe Winchester Special Order Model 1886 Takedown Light Weight Lever Action Rifle with Factory and Madis Letter
Manufacture in 1902. Accompanied by a factory letter and four page handed written letter from noted Winchester expert George Madis. The factory letters confirms this rifles configuration and lists: "33 caliber, round barrel, plain trigger, fancy checkered stock with oil finish, takedown, 1/2 magazine, shotgun butt rubber." This rifle was received into the warehouse on June 22, 1903 and shipped out the same day to order number 187789. Additionally this rifle features a Lyman hunting type rear sight with ivory bead insert, a block is seated in the rear sight slot and the receiver features a Lyman N-Ni- Model 86 receiver sight properly marked with the 95 patent date. The sights as well as all other special order features are determined to be original as noted in the lengthy four page letter by Madis. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-". The caliber: "33 WCF" is stamped on the top barrel flat in front of the receiver. "-MODEL 1886-" model designation is roll stamped on the upper receiver tang. The lower receiver tang has the two line patent marking behind the trigger and the serial number, "127931" behind the lower tang screw. This is the light weight version featuring a hallowed out space in the stock underneath the buttplate which serves to reduce weight and improve balance. Blue barrel and receiver with casehardened hammer, lever and loading gate. Finished with deluxe 2XX checkered forearm and straight grip stock with original Winchester eye sling swivels.

This a third model carbine, manufactured in 1897. The rifle is an extremely late production model and represents one of the last 50 Model 1876 ever manufactured. Fixed pinched front sight with folding carbine rear sight on blued barrel with standard Winchester two line address. Casehardened hammer and lever with the saddle ring mounted on the left side. Smooth oiled straight grip walnut stock with crescent steel buttplate. Complete with four piece cleaning rod in the butt trap.

The lever and hammer both show muted but still distinguishable original case colors. The wood is fair with pressure marks scattered and some chips around the butt which has possibly been cleaned and revarnished some time ago. The action is fine.

Casehardened components retain the majority or their brilliant original case colors. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is fine exhibiting only small pressure marks concentrated to the forearm. Overall a very fine example of an antique Winchester Model 1886.

This particular Winchester Model 1866 Rifle was manufactured in 1869. The forward edges of the brass frame have the distinctive flare at the junction with the forend. The octagon barrel is fitted with a steel blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight with a center notch graduated to 900 yards. There are sling swivels on the stock and forend cap. The hammer is knurled. The top of the barrel flat is roll stamped with the legend: "HENRY'S-PATENT - OCT.16.1860./KING'S- PATENT-MARCH.29 1866" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. An "A" inspection mark is stamped on the lower tang behind the serial number. The rifle has a blued barrel and magazine tube, casehardened hammer and loading lever and the distinctive brass forend cap, receiver and buttplate. The walnut stock and forend have an oil finish.

Scarce Special Order Winchester Model 1894, Extra-Light, Takedown Short Barrel Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Buffalo Bill Historical Center Letter
This is a rare short barreled Deluxe Winchester Model 1894 Take-Down Lever Action Rifle which is documented with a Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter. The letter states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on February 10, 1900 (must have sat around the factory as the rifle was manufactured three years prior in 1897). Winchester factory letters state that the extra-light, take-down rifle had a 22-inch, half-octagon barrel and half-magazine, checkered forearm and pistol grip stock, Lyman front sight, leaf rear sight and plain trigger. The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine and receiver and casehardened hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are highly figured, "Fancy Grain" walnut with "Style H" checkering and a high polish varnish finish. The pistol grip has a black, hard rubber cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The barrel is fitted with a dovetail mounted, Lyman, "Winchester Express" front sight with an ivory bead and a Lyman, two-leaf, folding, Express rear sight with flat top and bright triangle. A folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is stamped on the left barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The serial number, "80107" is stamped on the underside of the receiver.

This is an example of an early Second Model 1876 carbine that was manufactured in 1877 and features the dust cover guide rail attached to the top of the receiver by two screws and the dust cover with the checkered thumb oval on top. Fixed front sight with a folding rear carbine sight. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line Winchester/King's Improvement marking and there are no caliber markings. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1876" and the serial number appears on the lower tang behind the lever. The left rear of the barrel is marked with three British proof marks, the top of the receiver is marked with a "crown / V" proof mark and the left side of the receiver is marked "LONDON / JAS KERR & CO / 54 KING WM ST. E.C." There is a saddle ring and stud mounted on the left side of the receiver and it is fitted with a full forearm with a steel end cap and straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate. The right side of the stock is stamped with a circular cartouche, ("WILLIAM" readable, the remainder illegible). The accompanying Winchester letter verifies the serial number, carbine configuration, and that it was received in the warehouse on March 12, 1880, returned on September 6, 1880 and shipped from the warehouse on December 27, 1880 (order number 23403).

This third model musket has a 27-inch round barrel with 24-inch magazine and three barrel bands. The barrel has raised block front sight base that serves as a bayonet lug and an adjustable, folding adder rear sight. Sling swivels are fitted on the middle barrel band and the stock. The musket has a brass receiver and carbine style buttplate with sliding butt trap. The stock and 3/4-length forearm are oil-finished walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEWHAVEN.CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED. MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860", between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The socket bayonet is bright and has a 15 1/2 inch angular blade.

The upper tang is drilled for a sight mount and marked "MODEL 1873". Smooth forearm with a steel forend cap and straight grip stock with a crescent steel buttplate with empty compartment. No factory letter is available to writer at time of description to confirm barrel length.
