Empire 90 Tractor

Empire Model "90" tractor, Ser# 6801, Manufactured in 11-7-47 on serial plate, and is a possible proto-type because of the live hydralics mounted on the front of the tractor that appears to also help run the transmission. The Empire Tractor Corporation was incorporated in the state of Delaware in mid 1946 with production of the Model 88 Empire, beginning about September of that year. The light duty tractor was designed to be used with a general-purpose, two-bottom plow. This model of the Empire changed from 88 to 90 at about serial number 3000 in early or mid 1947. Most model 90 tractors had stamped on the data plate "88-90" as the company was using up the extra 88 serial number tags. The major change between the two models was the switch from military surplus to civilian engines and transmissions. What made the Empire tractor unique was the straight bar hitch that pulled from under the center of the tractor (patented) thus making an overturn nearly impossible. Another selling point was the Willy's engine and drive train made famous in the Jeep during World War II. The Empire Tractor was well equipped, reliable and versatile with its wide range of speeds. Many of the tractors were sold over seas. This market did not go well and they did not want to compete with the U.S. tractor market, so the company filed for bankruptcy in 1948.
