Spanish American War Letters from Charles Braddock, Jr., USS Resolute
Lot # 33 (Sale Order: 33 of 547)
He notes that: Our ship was 3,000 tons register, 310 feet long, 42 feet beam, drawing 19 feet when loaded, and being a passenger ship before going into the Government service was an enormous target with her huge superstructure. They had been in Guantanamo Bay up to the 1st of July. The following day they were ordered to Santiago. He describes the ring of American ships gathered at the entrance, and the sudden Spanish attempt to break free of the harbor. The Resolute had just passed behind the Indiana when the Maria Theresa appeared at the mouth of the harbor and began firing. She did not have more than one-third her length out of the entrance when she fired her forward turret gun at the Indiana, followed by her whole port battery. As we were directly in line behind the Indiana, and as all of the shots were fired high we got the benefit of them. The shot from the eleven-inch turret gun came over the Indiana, and with a moaning roar struck the water about thirty feet from the bridge on our starboard bow, followed by a flight of smaller projectiles which made the sea around us look like a boiling cauldron. I cannot speak for the others, but I know I wanted to be as small as possible, and could not help ducking my head, and all the time I kept repeating to myself: “They are not hitting us;” “they are not hitting us.” [Braddock 509]
