Fine Engraved and Gold-Inlaid Sharp's Patent Four-Barrel Deringer Pistol by Fabrica Euscalduna en Pl

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 710)      

.32 caliber, 2 7/8-inch barrels inlaid in relief with extensive gold scrolls surrounding the maker's name FA EUSCALDUNA EN PLACENCIA, the german-silver frame deeply chiseled with ornate acanthus scrolls, ebony grips (one with repairs) secured to frame by cross-member embellished in gold en suite to barrels.
Condition: Very good, barrels with aged patina to steel, the gold inlays excellent, excellent frame, ebony grips with repairs and small chips.
Notes: Fabrica Euscalduna, Placencia, Spain - 1860 -1873. See Der Neue Stockel, p. 355.

.36 caliber, 1 5/8-inch screwbarrel. Boxlock action contained in hollowed out compartment. Side of lock mechanism marked: Clemetshaw. Paper label in bottom of cavity reading: Clemetshaw & Co./PATENT/ Mossgate/York. Walnut butt. Pullstring cocking system. Recess cavities for ball and patch storage. External lever activates trigger. Red calf leather covering with steel latch, giving the impression of an ordinary man's purse. A very rare and early curiosa firearm. Size: 3-inches X 5 1/2-inches.
Condition: Very good. Showing age wear and patina. Mechanism works well.

2 1/8-inch barrel, frame engraved with floral scroll-work and silver-plated, folding trigger, ivory grips, contained within its original red leather two-compartment wallet case, lined in green felt, second section green Moroccan leather lined and ostensibly configured for cigars, gilt brass mountings.
Condition: Excellent, two tiny dents at muzzle face, some minor light staining at grip escutcheon, excellent grips, case with some exterior wear though otherwise very good.
Notes: According to the Christie's catalogue entry, this revolver was originally furnished with a small note that is now lacking.

Rare Cased Pair of Philadelphia-Style Percussion Derringers by J.P. Lower, Together with Accessories

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 16 of 710)      

.41 caliber, 3-inch brown-finished barrels marked: J.P. Lower. Dovetailed Geman silver front sights and silver banding at breeches. Scroll-engraved hammers and locks. Engraved German silver furniture and shield-shaped wrist escutcheons. Checkered walnut stocks. Contained in purple velvet-lined mahogany partitioned casing with brass corners and vacant lid escutcheon. together with small panel pattern powder flask with spring-loaded charger; turned wooden cap box; screwdriver and single-ball bullet mold. Key to case present.
Condition: Very good. Both guns showing light wear and age patina. Front sight broken on one example. Wood with light wear and minor bruises. Case excellent with light age wear present. Lining with minor snags and wear. Accoutrements with age wear and patina.
Notes: John P. Lower, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Denver, Colorado. Born 1833; apprenticed at Philadelphia to Joseph C. Grubb; independent after August 4, 1850. Lower made half-stock rifles [used J.H. Johnston barrels and George Golcher locks], percussion derringers. Made 6-shot, .32 rimfire, sheathed trigger revolvers marked with his name "W.L. Grant" or "D.D. Cone, Washington, D.C." until 1855 when Smith & Wesson sued for patent infringement. Lower came to Colorado in 1868. Became a partner of Carlos Gove in Denver in 1873 until 1876 when he opened his own shop, doing business at a number of successful locations: Blake Street, Larimer, Fifteenth and Champs. Died in 1917, at age of 84. One of the most famous of the Western gunmakers.

Serial no. 191, 5.5mm, 6-shot cylinder. Nickel-plated finish. Self-cocking system. Mechanism designed to replace a bicycle handlebar grip. Fore-end portion with compression clamp. When properly installed, gun is withdrawn from handlebar as needed and is ready to fire. Folding trigger. Walnut grips and fore-end. Length overall: 5-inches. A very rare and seldom encountered curiosa firearm.
Condition: Very good. Fore-end with minor crack repairs. Pistol mechanism functions well. Grip screw marred. Light wear overall.

Cased Frank Wesson Bicycle Gun with Accessories

Serial no. 1433, .32 caliber, 20-inch octagonal barrel with hooded front sight and rear peep sight. Swing-away breech, the left side marked: Frank Wesson, Worster, Mass./Patented May 21, 1870. Nickel-platd frame. Spur trigger. Rosewood grips. Butt slotted for a shoulder stock. Contained in associated, blue felt-lined custom-crafted violin-style wooden case together with nickel-plated steel skeleton detachable shoulder stock, cleaning rod, oil bottle and 35 rimfire cartridges. Case with hook closures.
Condition: Very good. Barrel with grey age patina and scattered light pitting and minor dents. Frame and grip refinished and showing minor wear and marks. Grips very good. Case with heavy wear and staining to interior. Exterior with age blistering to finish and dark age patina.

Unique Unmarked 18th-Century Flintlock Belt Gun, c. 1775

The 3?-inch turn-off barrel in two stages, breech portion octagonal, hinged to a half-circular brass box, hinged lid opens to expose boxlock flintlock mechanism, unit designed to be worn on belt at front, barrel hangs vertically downward and is flipped up into horizontal position when ready to use, mechanism is fired by side-mounted button lever, button lever on opposite side cocks piece, two brass belt-loops. Manufactured in last quarter 18th-century.
Condition: Good. Metal showing scattered wear, pitting and patina. One screw missing from mechanism.

2 1/4-inch octagonal barrel of approximately .47 caliber, muzzle with border engraving and set with gold fore-sight, INVENTION GOSSET A PARIS inlaid in gold, under-side of barrel engraved 1 (number one of a pair); box-lock action engraved with rear-sight, florals, engraved folding-trigger; burlwood bag-shaped stock carved with a fishscale pattern.
Condition: Very good, with light staining overall, excellent wood.
Notes: Probably Louis Marin Gosset working in Paris 1822 - 1840. See Der Neue Stockel. p. 448 for a discussion of Gosset.
