X 57 1/2in. and weighing approx. 661lb. mounted with a rectangular plaque inscribed 'This cabinet housed the papers of Winston Churchill Prime Minister' Provenance: This cabinet formerly Sir Winston Churchill's wartime filing cabinet specially reinforced to protect its contents from bomb damage was moved to the Bodleian Library from Chartwell in 1963 and the archives were subsequently transferred to Churchill College Cambridge in 1996.

GUILDFORD GUNPOWDER A TRADE MIRROR SIGNED J&T SHARP LONDON

GUILDFORD GUNPOWDER A TRADE MIRROR SIGNED J&T SHARP LONDON circa 1890 approximately 30in. wide by 23in. high black ebonised moulded wood frame the mirror with a central multi-coloured Royal coat of arms surmounted with 'GUILDFORD GUNPOWDER' together with 'SUPERFINE' and 'SPORTING' bordered with running vines and above 'MANUFACTURED BY J&T SHARP OFFICE 8 BIRCHIN LANE LONDON' the silvering with some frosting and lifting Other Notes: Guildford Gunpowder was produced by the Chilworth Powder Mills. The works were established in 1625 by the East India Company and finally closed for business in 1920. Originally the only legal powder supplier to the King over the years the Chilworth Powder Mills were worked by a number of private companies and became an important supplier of gunpowder to the Government. Although a large majority of buildings were demolished in the 20th century over 100 key buildings still remain within the site. Chilworth Gunpower Mills is one of the earliest examples of gunpower mills and is situated with the Tillingbourne river running along the northern boundary and the original gunpower mill canal running along the southern boundary. The remaining buildings and area are now looked after by Guildford Borough Council and English Heritage.
