Desirable Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3000 (Sale Order: 1 of 844)

Desirable Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

This Winchester Model 1866 rifle was manufactured in 1882. The rifle has the Fourth Model receiver profile, iron crescent buttplate and forearm cap and serial number stamped in script numerals on the lower tang. The rifle has a round barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel has the standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn sporting rear sight with serrated edges. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The buttplate has a sliding brass trap door and the butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED. MARCH 9. 1866, OCTOBER 6. 1860." in two-lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number "161325" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang behind the lever latch. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut.

Class: Antique

Very good plus. The rifle is all original and shows moderate handling wear. This is a working rifle that was used but not abused. The barrel, magazine and forearm cap have a dark brown patina with a light age texturing. The barrel has been lightly cleaned above the legend. The Winchester legend is light but legible. The buckhorn rear sight has a flat top and has been period modified by adding a brass insert with larger sighting notch. The brass receiver has a deep, untouched patina. The receiver is in good condition with scattered, minor, dents and scratches. The side plate edges are tight but the hammer and lever screws show screw-driver wear. The hammer, trigger, lever and buttplate have a dark brown patina with some very light pitting. The stock and forearm show moderate handling wear but remain in good overall condition. The forearm shows a number of small dents and scratches but remains in good overall condition. The stock has less handling wear but has a hair-line crack in the left wrist that extends about 2 1/2 inches from the end of the receiver and has a shallow 1/2-inch dent in the left side of the stock. Model 1866 Winchester rifles and carbines were working guns that were used on the frontier. They typically show the effects of hard use in a hostile environment. This is a great example of an 1882 production Winchester Model 1866 lever action rifle.

Very good as period master custom embellished. The musket has a mostly even brown overall along with 90% of the gold inlay with areas of light to mild pitting and some light scratches. Desirable Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Takedown .50 Express Rifle

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 3 of 844)

Desirable Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Takedown .50 Express Rifle

This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 Takedown rifle that was manufactured in 1902 and chambered for the Winchester .50 Express cartridge. The rifle has a full octagon barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has a dovetail mounted Winchester Express front sight with gold bead and the scarce, short leaf, Winchester Express rear sight with folding leafs marked "50", "1" and "2". Each leaf has a platinum sight line. A Lyman folding combination rear sight with locking button of the left side is mounted on the receiver tang. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grain, walnut with a piano finish and custom checkered panels with double line borders. The stock has a custom, ebony, pistol grip cap and shotgun butt with black, checkered, hard rubber buttplate with the round Winchester logo in the center. The length of pull is approximately 15 inches, which is very long. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver are blued and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/ WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight.. The caliber designation "50EX." is stamped on the top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the serial number "127380" ahead of the rear tang screw.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine as period custom stocked. The rifle has at least 85% of the original Winchester blue finish. The barrel has wear on the edges, and the magazine has the usual takedown scuff marks. The receiver has edge wear, a few minor scratches and handling marks, and a one inch spot of shallow pitting and finish discoloration on the bottom of the receiver and adjacent portion of the takedown collar. The upper left side of the receiver has some finish loss on the top edge near the hammer. The bolt has nearly all of the blue finish intact. The fire blue finish on the loading gate has faded to a blue gray patina. The case colors on the hammer and lever are strong. The stock and forearm are in very good condition. The well executed custom checkering has some minor handling wear. The stock has a small chip on the left side of the junction of the upper tang. The stock finish is dull with light handling wear. This is an attractive example of a period customized Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Takedown .50 Express rifle.

Fine Original Late Production Henry Rifle

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 8 of 844)

Fine Original Late Production Henry Rifle

This Henry lever action rifle was manufactured in 1867 after the New Haven Arms Company name was changed to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in May 1866. Serial number 12850 is generally considered to be the highest Henry rifle serial number although Henry rifles with serial numbers in the 14000 range have been reported. This rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate and blued 24 inch octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The hammer, trigger and lever are casehardened. The stock is straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the late production features which include: straight back, nickel silver, front sight blade; folding leaf rear sight with elevator bar stop screw and 900 yard center notch; large brass magazine follower; beveled magazine follower cut in the receiver; second style buttplate with sharply pointed heel and second style receiver without a rear sight dovetail. The left side of the stock is fitted with a sling swivel, and the left side of the barrel has a screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The sling swivel and loop were standard features on late production Henry rifles. The buttplate has a hinged brass trap door, and the butt trap contains the jointed steel cleaning rod furnished with late production Henry rifles. The cleaning rod is missing the fourth section with the brass tip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style New Haven Arms Co. legend introduced about serial number 4000. This legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." is located on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight and is larger than the legend found on early Henry rifle barrel and has all serif letters. The top of the barrel is also stamped with the serial number "12768" between the rear sight and the receiver. The serial number "12768" was also stamped on the inside of the buttplate. The stock was not removed to view the serial numbers stamped on the left side of the lower tang and in the upper tang inlet of the stock. Buttplate and stock screws on late production Henry rifles are not serial numbered. The small "W" inspection mark used by Oliver Winchester is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Class: Antique

Fine. This rifle is all original and retains 30% of the blue finish which is mostly contained in the protected areas on the barrel/magazine. The balance of the barrel/magazine has a dark brown patina that shows minimal handling wear. The barrel edges are sharp, and the legend and serial number are crisp. The rear sight is complete and original to the rifle. The brass receiver and buttplate have a deep and very attractive patina that can only be acquired over time. The brass components shows no indication of ever been polished. The receiver is also in fine condition with tight side plate joints; wear is limited to a few very minor scratches and handling marks. The buttplate is slightly lifted on top and is in the same condition as the receiver and shows only very light handling wear. The hammer, trigger and lever have an even, plum-brown patina. The stock is in very fine, untouched condition with a few scattered handling and storage marks. This is a great example of an untouched, completely original Henry rifle that apparently saw very little use. This is quite possibly the highest serial number Henry rifle ever offered by the Rock Island Auction Company.

Winchester Model 1873 .22 caliber rimfire rifle manufactured in 1884, the first year of production for the .22 Model 1873 rifle. The Model 1873 was the first Winchester firearm chambered for the .22 rimfire cartridge and the first .22 caliber repeating rifle. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office Search Form that describes it as a rifle, caliber .22 with octagon barrel and plain trigger. The Cody form states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on September 3, 1884. The rifle has the Winchester commercial blue finish on the octagon barrel, full length magazine, forearm cap, receiver and dust cover. The hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. "22 CAL." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The serial number, "156052 A" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the rear tang screw and the lever latch.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. The rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue finish overall. The blue finish has faded slightly and slight finish loss on the barrel edges. The contact points on the magazine show traces of plum brown patina. The receiver has edge wear on contact points and some scattered age spotting but has most of the bright blue finish. The dust cover retains about 80% of the blue finish. The trigger and lever have strong case colors. The right side of the hammer has some finish loss. The case colors on the buttplate have faded to a silver gray patina. The stock and forearm are in very good overall condition; the forearm shows some finish wear and the stock has a number of shallow handling marks concentrated primarily on the lower left side. This is a very fine example of a scarce and important Winchester Model 1873 .22 caliber rifle.

Special Order Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured in 1880. The rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The rifle has a "Half-Plated" finish with silver-plated forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, loading gate cover, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate. The letter states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on October 14, 1880. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS, NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH.29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped and roll-stamped: "MODEL. 1873". Very good as period replated. The blue finish on the barrel and magazine tube has faded to a plum-colored patina. The barrel has minor dents and scratches on the sides and edges with small patches of age discoloration. The barrel legend is light but fully legible. The forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, loading port cover, hammer, lever and buttplate retain most of the silver-plated finish. The side plates, buttplate and lower tang have light-moderate flaking. The revarnished stock and forearm show moderate-heavy handling wear with numerous shallow scratches and handling marks. There are several larger dents on the left side of the stock below the comb. The hammer will not remain cocked. This is a solid example of a scarce special order, half-plated, Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle.

"CAL. 40-60" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver surrounded by an engraved border. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1886" with foliate devices at either end. The upper tang has been drilled and tapped and part of the marking has been obliterated. Rare Deluxe Factory Engraved Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Sporting Rifle with Factory L

Lot # 3016 (Sale Order: 17 of 844)

Rare Deluxe Factory Engraved Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter

This is a fine original example of a documented factory engraved Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action rifle that was manufactured in 1881. The rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover guide rail and later style dust cover with serrated finger guide. The 28 inch full octagon barrel, full length magazine, dust cover and loading gate are blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured fancy grain walnut with checkered panels and a piano finish. The forearm cap, dust cover, cartridge elevator, receiver and buttplate heel are factory engraved with fine scrollwork on a punch dot background. The left side plate is engraved with a game scene featuring two detailed deer, and the right side plate has an open banner. The engraving is nearly identical to the Ulrich engraved Model 1873 carbine illustrated on page 186 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. The rifle is equipped with a special order single-set trigger. The barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards and marked "1876" at the top of the leaf. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "CAL. 45-60" is located on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. "45-60" is stamped in script numerals on the cartridge elevator. "MODEL. 1876." is roll-stamped on the upper tang. The serial number "16771" is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. Included with the rifle is a factory letter that verifies the caliber, octagonal barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, casehardened receiver and the five dollar level engraving. Additionally, the letter reports that the rifle arrived at the warehouse on October 1, 1887 and left on December 1, 1886, which we ascribe to a transcription error.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle is all original with about 70% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish. The balance of the blue finish on the barrel and magazine has aged to an attractive plum-colored patina. The metal surfaces are smooth. The barrel edges are sharp, and the markings are crisp. Substantial amounts of nitre blue finish remain on the loading gate and dust cover. The case color pattern is visible on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate but has mostly faded to a mottled silver-gray patina. There are several small spots of light pitting on the bottom and sides of receiver and a small spot of surface corrosion on the right side plate. The flawlessly executed Ulrich-engraved scrollwork and game scene are crisp. The highly figured deluxe walnut stock and forearm are both in fine overall condition with moderate wear. The checkering on the stock and forearm shows moderate handling wear, and there is some finish loss on both sides of the stock. This is a fine example of a rare, deluxe, Ulrich factory engraved, Special Order Winchester Model 1876 Deluxe Lever Action rifle.

Scarce Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol

Lot # 3019 (Sale Order: 20 of 844)

Scarce Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol

This is an example of a Factory Engraved Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistol that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company. The pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine, brass receiver and finger-hole loading lever. The pistol has a small brass pinch-top front sight on the barrel and dovetail mounted rear sight on the receiver. The hammer and lever are casehardened and the receiver has a natural brass finish. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish "piano" finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14. 1854" in two lines. The lack of Volcanic markings and the addition of "Patent" before the February 14, 1854 date indicate that the pistol was manufactured after Oliver Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company into the New Haven Arms Company in April 1857. The serial number "1761" is stamped on the left side of the butt beneath the grips. The top and sides of the receiver and the back strap are engraved with the large, open, scroll work utilized by the New Haven Arms Co., on factory engraved guns. The New Haven Arms Co., produced an estimated total of 3300 lever action pistols and carbines between 1857 and 1860. This total includes an estimated 850 No. 1 Pocket Pistols. Volcanic pistols and carbines are scarce and historically significant firearms. The Volcanic lever action, integral magazine and self-contained "rocket ball" cartridges represented a significant advance in firearms design. The basic Volcanic designs evolved into the Henry lever action rifle and the Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles and carbines. Oliver F. Winchester's investment in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and subsequent controlling interest in the New Haven Arms Company eventually led to the establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

Class: Antique

Very good. The fine brass receiver has an attractive, untouched patina. The open scroll engraving is crisp. The side plate joints are tight and the receiver has minimal handling marks. The barrel markings are clear. The barrel, hammer and lever are covered with light pitting. The barrel has been cleaned and shows some age discoloration. The hammer, lever and trigger have a dark brown patina. The grips are in very good condition and retain about half of the piano finish. There is a repaired crack in the right grip and several hair-line cracks in the heel of the right grip. This is a solid example of a scarce, factory engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistol.
