dating: 18th Century provenance: Central Italy Flintlock with flat plate, featuring remains of an engraved mask at the centre, on the tang a fine, chiselled, relieved mask with engraved racemes on the ground; the screw of the hammer with a relieved face featured on the pan too, the surface of the neck engraved as a bird, the jaws decorated with floral motifs, the border of the spring engraved with a band of foliage. The back of the lock marked "CELALBA".Celalba is a small village in the municipality of San Giustino (PG), Italy, for nearly four-hundred years it was the seat of the Repubblica di Cospaia, a very small buffer state between Medici and Papal lands. It had a prosper production of tobacco and an important production and trade of fire arms. Box-lock type mechanism with rear hammer (detachable upper jaw) and batterie, trigger with trigger guard; checkered, wooden grip, chiselled with shell on the sides and hollow scales on the back, iron butt-plate.
