Lot # 1425 (Sale Order: 426 of 889)

Cased Exhibition Quality Gold Inlaid E.J. Malherbe & Cie. Liege Twenty Shot Double Action Pinfire Revolver with Relief Carved Ebony Grips

This E.J. Malherbe & Cie. of Liege, Belgium, twenty shot pinfire revolver features an exhibition grade gold inlaid motif. The over/under barrels, frame recoil shields, loading gate and grip straps are completely covered in gold inlaid cross hatching accented with raised gold studs. Between the cross hatching are floral blossoms left in the bright on a matte black background. Truly a spectacular pattern done by a master craftsman that excites admiration. The top of the barrel has "E.J. MALHERBE & CIE. LIEGE" inlaid in gold on a matte black background and inside a gold inlaid banner. The hammer engraved in the likeness as a mythical bird such as a phoenix has deep relief engraved feathers, checkering on the spur and gold wash on the outer edges. The over/under barrels have wide gold bands at the muzzle and breech with the front sight having gold wash. The outer chambers of the cylinder-10 in all have a deep relief engraved floral pattern with gold filling in the negative spaces. The cylinder has two rows of chambers with each row having 10 chambers making for 20 chambers in all. Pulling the double action trigger alternates between the outer and inner chambers. An ejector rod that acts for both sets of cylinder chambers is mounted on the right side of the frame. The folding trigger has a gold wash. The ebony grips exhibit near full coverage of a deep relief floral carved pattern which incorporates a grotesque head at the bottom. Raised silver studs and silver horns on the grotesque head bring an added dimension to the high grade artistic grips. A lanyard ring stud with ring is mounted on the butt. The grip screw and escutcheons have a gold wash. The case is lined in royal purple leather-like book binding style material of the period. The inside of the case has the marker's label in gold: "E.J. MALHERBE & CIE/A/LIEGE." The exterior of the case is covered in a handsome, highly figured walnut veneer with contrasting rosewood strips veneered along the edges. The ebony accessories feature a high relief floral carved motif with silver studs. The carving matches the floral pattern on the grips.

Class: Antique

Excellent overall. The revolver retains 97% of the original gold overall. The cylinder has a highly attractive smooth dark brown finish. The grips are excellent with a crisp carving. Mechanically excellent. The case is very fine with a broken lid hinge support bar, some high spot wear to the lining and minor handling/storage marks overall. The oiler has a minor age crack, otherwise the accessories are very fine.

Factory Engraved Exhibition Quality Mauser Model 1878 Zig-Zag Revolver

Lot # 1426 (Sale Order: 427 of 889)

Factory Engraved Exhibition Quality Mauser Model 1878 Zig-Zag Revolver

This is a very fine example of a factory engraved Mauser Model 1878 revolver with the hinged frame. The revolver was nicknamed Zig-Zag because of the parallel and inclined grooves machined into the outside of the cylinder which actually rotate the cylinder during firing. As noted this is the hinged frame model with the ring-type cylinder locking lever/ejector located ahead of the trigger guard, and a safety latch on the left side of the frame that prevents the cylinder from rotating when engaged. The revolver is finished in nickel with a gold locking lever, cylinder, frame screws, hammer and trigger. The frame, trigger guard, cylinder and front of the locking lever are engraved with floral leaf designs. In addition there is a fine scallop border on top of the barrel rib, zigzag designs on the locking lever and a geometric design on a portion of the front strap. The top of the barrel rib is marked "GEBR MAUSER & CIE OBERNDORF A/N. WURTTEMBERG. 1878". The serial number "1048" is marked on the rear cylinder face and the partial number "48" is marked on the cylinder lock/ejector, trigger, frame lug and crudely marked on the lower left side of the frame under the grip. The revolver has later style round-butt with the lanyard loop on the end of the butt. It is fitted with two piece Gutta Percha grips with a relief stylized floral and vine pattern around the edges and checkering in the center. The inside of each panel is marked "1048" in two places and "F2-1395" at the top of each panel. These revolvers were later chambered in the 9mm Mauser cartridge, (forerunner to the 9mm Parabellum). Although very well manufactured and reliable, the Mauser Model 1878 was expensive to manufacture and had limited commercial sales. They remained in service with the German Army for 18-20 years until it was replaced by the 1896 Mauser pistol. Examples of this distinctive Mauser revolver are scarce. Comes in a custom made leather bound hard case with green fitted felt lining with two keys.

Class: Antique

Very fine as partially replated (cylinder, hammer, trigger and cylinder stop lever) with 98% original nickel finish remaining, with some very minor blistering on top of the barrel rib and some scattered minor dings and scratches. 90% of the gold finish remains with some normal cycling wear and thinning on the hammer. There is a small amount of very minor pitting under the finish on the rear face of the cylinder. The grips are excellent. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good plus.

Extraordinary Exhibition Quality Cased Silver and Gold Inlaid Pinfire Pepperbox Pistol

This double action pinfire revolver, manufactured by Paulino Aretio of Bilbao Spain, features an exquisite silver and gold inlaid foliate motif. The inlaid foliate covers nearly all of the metal surfaces on a matte black background. The vine and leaf pattern cover the cylinder flats, frame, recoil shields, loading gate, hammer, folding trigger, and grip straps. The sides for the frame have "J.J.M.Z." inlaid in gold. The edge of the left recoil shield has "FaDE PAULINO DE ARETIO" inlaid on gold and the edge of the loading gate (right side) has "BILBAO" inlaid in gold. The screw heads and grip screw escutcheons also feature gold inlay. The case holds the revolver, a screwdriver and a cleaning rod. Cartridge blocks line the sides of the case which are able to hold a total of 104 pinfire cartridges, 80 cartridges are included. The top of the lid has a silver inlaid plaque which reads, "J.J.M.Z." (the same initials that appear on the sides of the frame).

Class: Antique

Excellent. The cylinder flutes retain 80% original high polished blue finish showing brown speckling. The remaining surfaces retain 90% of the matte black finish. All of the gold and silver inlay remain. The slightly shrunken grips are fine with a minor chip missing near the top (left panel). The grip has an attractive grain pattern and color. Action needs work as trigger must be reset after the action is cycled. The case is fine with a minor crack on the lid, minor handling/storage marks, and high spot wear on the lining. Half of the pearl key hole escutcheon remains. A fine example of a silver and gold inlaid pinfire revolver that would enhance any European antique sidearm collection.

Excellent Lancaster Charles Superposed Barreled Howdah Pistol

Lot # 1428 (Sale Order: 429 of 889)

Excellent Lancaster Charles Superposed Barreled Howdah Pistol

An outgrowth and evolution of the "Howdah" pistols used as point defense weapons by big game hunters, Charles Lancaster's multi-barreled pistols used a pepperbox-style action in conjunction with large, man-stopping brass-cased cartridges to deliver a rate of fire and striking power that was among the best available in its day. Though never a standard issue weapon with the British colonial forces, many officers chose Lancasters over the standard issue revolvers due to these attributes. Silver blade and notch sights, with "CHARLES LANCASTER (PATENT) 151 NEW BOND ST. LOUIS" marked solid rib. Various British proofs are stamped on the smooth bore barrels and frame, "476 CF" marked on the left flute, and "42" on the underside of lower barrel. The barrel latch is a visible hook on either side of the frame, controlled by a right handed thumb lever, and an ejector is automatically engaged by tipping the barrel, using a cam system similar to the one found on the later Webley revolvers. Serrated back strap with a lanyard ring and fitted with two-piece checkered bird head grips which extend to cover much of the frame.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrels have thinned to a smooth brown patina with 90% plus of bright original high polish blue finish remaining. The remaining metal surfaces retain 80% original niter blue finish. The grips are excellent with some minor pressure dents and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Charles Lancaster Four Barreled Pistol in 380 CF

Lot # 1429 (Sale Order: 430 of 889)

Charles Lancaster Four Barreled Pistol in 380 CF

A product of the mid 1800s, Charles Lancaster's multi-barreled pistols operated on the same grouped barrel principle as the more common smaller double action pepperbox pistols, but were available in massive calibers. Though never a standard issue weapon with the British colonial forces, many officers assigned to Africa and India chose Lancasters over the standard issue revolvers due to their superior rate of fire and large caliber. An estimated 712 of all models of this four barreled pistol were manufactured. The top of the barrel cluster is marked "CHARLES LANCASTER PATENT 151NEW BOND ST. LONDON". Both sides of the barrel cluster are stamped with six proofs near the breech with "380 CF" stamped on the left flute. The workshop number "52" is stamped on the underside of the frame and barrel cluster near the hinge with the serial number engraved on the trigger guard. The breech face is stamped "PATENT CHARLES LANCASTER" in a circle. Fitted with checkered bird's head grips and a lanyard ring on the butt.

Class: Antique

Fine as period refinished overall. The barrel cluster thinned to a smooth brown patina with 95% of faded refinished blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces retain strong amounts of original nitre blue finish in and around the protected areas, otherwise a mottled brown patina. The reoiled grips are fine with a few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically fine.

Impressive Frederic T. Baker Marked William Tranter Patent 577 Caliber Large Solid Frame Double Action Revolver

This very fine example of a William Tranter patent 577 caliber solid frame revolver is marked with the "FREDERICK T. BARKER LONDON" retailer marking on the top strap. The left side of the frame has the Tranter patent marking and serial number. The front of the frame has the caliber marking: "577/GAUGE." The upper left barrel flat has two British proofmarkings. Additional British proofs are stamped on the chambers of the church steeple fluted cylinder. The cylinder has a detachable rear plate. All blue finish and fitted with a checkered grip. The left side of the grip has a crown/B marking. The felt lined case comes with a bottle of Rangoon oil, oiler, cartridge block, powder measure, cleaning rod with attachment case key, and two 577 caliber bullets. Excellent Cased and Engraved James Webley Patent "Long Spur" Single Action Percussion Revolver with

Lot # 1432 (Sale Order: 433 of 889)

Excellent Cased and Engraved James Webley Patent "Long Spur" Single Action Percussion Revolver with Wilkinson & Sons Retailer Marking and Accessories

This beautiful revolver was designed by James Webley. He received the patent for his design on March 29, 1853. The grip angle and long hammer spur allowed for much faster cocking of the action than a standard single action percussion revolver. He and his brother Philip were the founders of the famous Webley firm that manufactured many of the revolvers used throughout the British Empire in the latter part of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The "long spur" revolvers were the first revolvers designed and produced by the firm. Only an estimated 2,000 were manufactured by the end of the decade due to slow production and high costs. This example has gorgeous English scrollwork engraving and border designs, a low blade front sight, hammer notch rear sight, "WILKINSON & SONS . 27 PALL MALL, LONDON." on the top of the barrel, two proofmarks on the bottom of the barrel at the breech, alternating numbers (1-5) and London proofmarks on the cylinder, "JAMES WEBLEY/PATENTEE" on the left side of the frame in a banner, a loading lever on the left side of the frame, checkered grips, the serial number and "BY HER MAJESTY'S/ROYAL LETTERS PATENT" on the back strap, and a lanyard stud on the butt. It comes in a later hardwood case fitted to the gun and the accessories and lined in green baize. Included is a key with a "Liqueur Case" tag, a container with several conical bullets, a wooden bore rod, brass bullet mold, James Dixon & Sons powder flask, small oiler bottle, nipple wrench, and six Eley paper cartridges.

Class: Antique

Excellent. 80% plus of the original, bright high polish blue finish and 85% rich vivid case colors remain on the cylinder, hammer and loading lever. Most of the finish wear is located on the right side of the action above the trigger and on the grip frame. The grips are also excellent and have sharp checkering, some small spots of slight surface chipping, and minor handling marks. The case and accessories are very fine with mild storage wear.

Unique Antique Hand Cannon Attributed to the Ming Dynasty

Lot # 1438 (Sale Order: 439 of 889)

Unique Antique Hand Cannon Attributed to the Ming Dynasty

The consignor's notes indicated this hand cannon was used during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). There are vertically marked Chinese characters stamped in the body of the weapon. It is very similar in design and shape to the early primitive hand held firearms or "handgonnes" from that period and the end Mongol Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). A wooden rod/stock would have been fitted to one end. Some were quite long and required two people to operate them while smaller examples like this could be aimed and ignited by a single man. The projectiles of these earlier firearms were often as simple as appropriately sized pebbles though some lead or shaped stone bullets were even used early on. Regardless of the projectile, early examples were not tremendously useful in battle and lacked the ability to penetrate armor or often even thick clothing. However, as black powder increased in quality and better mechanisms such as the match lock became available, firearms quickly began to replace archers. Firearms were relatively easy to mass produce and far less skill was required for a soldier to be competent in their use than with a bow. This example is 9 inches long and has a bulbous section and rings.

Class: Other

Good. It displays a mix of dark patina and bright verdigris. The Chinese markings are lightly visible There are also a few small spots of bright oxidation. The bore is obstructed, possibly loaded.

Lot # 1439 (Sale Order: 440 of 889)

Miniature/Child-Sized Suit of Japanese Armor, with Helmet and Case

Created by an unknown craftsman, the overall construction of the suit follows patterns and trends seen in 17th century Japanese armor, though on a much smaller scale and with lacquered plastic used as the chief material for the armor plates. Primary colors on the plates are gold and black, alternating in primary and accent, with a mixture of white and blue cords securing the pieces together. The kabuto (helmet) is equipped with a crescent accent on the front, two hanging neck protector panels, and a mempo style faceguard with hanging throat protector. The do (breastplate) is decorated with a paulownia mon, classically a symbol of the Imperial family and used today by the government of Japan, with open sleeves made from fine embroidered gold cloth with a set of ribbed forearm guards, and hanging upper arm and thigh guards. An apron of similar material to the sleeves is also included, as are a pair of guards for the shin and the front of the ankle. With a black lacquer finished cedar case.

Class: Other

Very good overall, with some scuffing and chips on the plates and mild wear overall. The apron is fair, and very fragile, but the other cloth components are solid. A few dings are present on the case, along with some mild edge wear.

Unique and Rare Japanese Percussion Single Shot Pistol Disguised as a Tanto

Lot # 1442 (Sale Order: 443 of 889)

Unique and Rare Japanese Percussion Single Shot Pistol Disguised as a Tanto

Patterned after an aikuchi-style tanto, with matching wood saya and grip. Aside from the center mounted hammer and trigger, there are few outward signs of the weapon's function. The saya has a downward curvature that would be proper for a blade sheath, a proper kurigata 1 1/2" down from the brass koiguchi and, when closed, doubles as a protective cover for the nipple. Drawing the "blade" reveals the octagon barrel, which is unadorned and fitted with a percussion nipple on the top flat. Brass frame, with scroll engraving on either side, silver finished brass hammer with iron striker insert and brass trigger with a front curve ending in a fancy scroll. Wood highly figured grip, with a gentle downward curve matching that of the saya, gently rounded butt and a lanyard hole with silver floral pattern eyelets.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel shows a mixed brown patina with bright gray along the edges and light spotting. Fine color on the frame with a speckled, almost gold color on the top and a deeper aged mustard color on the sides and bottom and near black in the engraving for an attractive contrast. Most of the original silver remains on the hammer and trigger, having turned a dark patina with fine aged brass in the exposed areas. Wood is excellent, with a few tiny cracks, mild pressure dents and handling marks. Mechanically fine.

Exceptional Japanese Tachi-Length Sword, Attributed to the Late 12th/Early 13th Century

Lot # 1443 (Sale Order: 444 of 889)

Exceptional Japanese Tachi-Length Sword, Attributed to the Late 12th/Early 13th Century

Measuring 38 1/2 inches overall, with a 27 1/8 inch blade, showing a fine hamon that starts out wavy near the silver plated copper habaki before stabilizing to a straight hamon running just a fraction of an inch away from the edge, with superb metal grain running the entire length of the blade. The tsuba is iron construction, four-lobed, the top decorated with a gold highlighted engraving of a small stream, and the underside a sculpted scene of an old man standing beneath a flowering tree, the flowers and the man's robe accented in gold, and the man's head rendered in engraved silver. The motif of the man beneath the tree is repeated on the kashira in darkened copper with gold accents, and the fuchi showing a wrap-around scene of two men in a temple, configured as the kashira. The grip is wrapped in purple cord, and the menuki are floral arrangements in copper, silver and gold. The saya is finished in black lacquer with white bead accents, a carved 3-symbol marking on the face above a pair of crossed silver eagle feathers, a green cord, and brown horn fittings. A deep, near-black color is showing on the tang, with a 2-symbol signature on the right side and a copper liner added to the mekugi-ana. A consignor-supplied translation identifies this as "suki mune", and attribute the manufactured to a date range of 1180 A.D. to 1220. This timeframe would see the end of the Heian Period with the Genpai War c.1180-1185 and the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate. Many of the swords originally produced in this configuration would be shortened in later years as trends in fighting arms called for polearms for open-field combat and shorter blades like the katana and wakizashi for close-in/house fighting; this example shows none of the symptoms of shortening.

Class: Other

Very fine overall. A few minor dings and spots are present on the fine polished blade, with a few tiny chips on the edge and some dents on the habaki. The tsuba shows a fine, deep aged patina, with a few tears in the rayskin and stains on the wrap. The saya is very good, with some dings and scuffs. An excellent example of the fine art of the Japanese sword.

Lot # 1449 (Sale Order: 450 of 889)

Bergmann Model 1896 Number 3 Target Model Pistol with Scarce 6 Inch Barrel

Only a handful of this rare long-barreled target model were ever produced. Theodore Bergman was a pioneer in developing semi-automatic pistols in Europe in the late 1890s right along side Mauser, Borchardt, Luger and Walther. This model was one of the first true commercially successful semi-automatic pistols. They have the distinctive flat top bolt and top cover with the thin, light weight firing pin with the smooth flat side frame. The Model 1896 can be identified by the two angled cuts on the right side of the frame. This model has the integral magazine that sits in front of the trigger that loads through the top with stripper clips. The barrel is fitted with a windage adjustable front sight with a sighting notch cut into the top rear edge of the bolt. The right side of the pistol has oval shaped logo that depicts a "mountain man" logo holding a pick behind his back with sunrays emenating from behind him. The top of the oval is marked "Gaggenau" and the lower area is marked " V.C.S. Suhl", indicating that these pistols were manufactured by the Schilling Company. The right side front frame area is stamped serial number "2704". The left side of the barrel is marked with the bore diameter of "278" followed by a Double Crown/U proof mark in front and one behind the number. The lower left front edge of the frame is stamped in three lines: "PATENT/BREVET/S.G.D.G.". The upper left side of the frame is also stamped with a small Double Crown/U proof. It is fitted with a set of walnut checkered grips.

Class: Antique

Excellent with 95% plus of the blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear overall. The smaller parts retains 90% of their straw colors overall. The walnut grips are in near excellent condition with nice sharp distinct checkering on both sides. There is a very small chip on the upper right front side grip.
