C.S.A.D. SIMPLIFIED BOLT ACTION RIFLE.

Lot # 2001 (Sale Order: 1 of 761)      

Cal. 303 Brit. NSN. Bbl. 25.2". This mid 1942 mfg. experimental design was an attempt to simplify the mfg. techniques to enhance production. Designed by Chief Superintendent of Armament Design at Cheshunt in 1942. This specimen incorporates dual locking lugs, extractor similar to pattern 1913, internal fixed mag. w/ #4 follower. Fabricated 300 or 600 yard peep sight. A traverse push button safety at the trigger. Charger guide welded to top of receiver. Front sight w/ protective ears welded to the base & No.4 buttplate. Stamped "5" on bolt locking lug. The example in the pattern room is number (4). Khaki web sling. Stock is numbered 8950 on butt right side. CONDITION: overall appearance & finish very good to near excellent on metal parts w/ thinning on sling retention band. Top of action where bolt rides in receiver bare metal w/ milling marks apparent. Rifle bore well defined, dark in the grooves. Stock is very good w/ a couple of significant bruises & a crack on the right side running from the butt 5.25" toward the trigger guard. Receiver marked on left side w/ proofs. Bolt has sliding dust cover. Early safety catch. Volley sights present. Mag. cutoff present. Lewes front & rear sights. Rear sight graduated to 1800 yards. Wire breaker attachment on threaded muzzle. Cleaning rod not present. Upper band has stacking & sling swivels. Forend has reinforcing strap approx. 2 1/2" behind upper band. Trigger guard has sling swivel attached. Steel trap buttplate attached w/ brass screws. Matching walnut stock set. Buttstock marked on right side w/ "RM ENFIELD" & crown, broad arrow plus WD I.I". Buttstock has hole for oil bottle pin. First pattern handguard has sighting groove & squared front. MAGS: 1-8 rd. mag attached by chain. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Pattern 1888 early type 11 1/4" dbl. edged blade bayonet. Marked on left ricasso Crown over VR. Marked on right ricasso "WD" & numerous view marks. Has walnut grips retained by 3 brass rivets. Metal tipped leather scabbard. CONDITION: stock set has extensive wear, dents, scratches & staining throughout. Sm. painted "8" on left side. Forend has crack extending on right side from butt socket to front of mag. Metal retains traces of blue, turning patina, w/ wear, scratches, oxidation & scattered fine pitting. Dust cover, bands, nose cap & wire breaker show notable patina. Fair bore w/ darkened appearance. Bayonet blade is bright, but stained, oxidation & pitting. Handle parts have gray patina. EXTREMELY RARE THORNYCROFT TRIALS

Lot # 2003 (Sale Order: 3 of 761)      

CAVALRY BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 303 Brit. S# 20. Bbl. 25.2". Extremely interesting trials Thornycroft & Farquhar w/ Birmingham proofs which incorporates patented rear sight of the same name w/ push-pull windage adjustment & slide which returns to central position when slide pulled to the rear. This rifle retains its original short regulation length bbl. The inauguration of the bullpup design came out of Thornycroft's South African experience & this specimen was certainly made before 1905. This very interesting design has a wooden cover screwed to the top of the bolt & a fixed internal mag. w/out provision for rapid charging. The two pistol grip configuration serve a dual purpose w/ the rear grip useful for bayonet fighting as well as facilitating an easy grasp when it is in the saddle boot. Short bolt has two locking lugs. Safety is a sm. flip-down hooked catch at right which can clip over a lug on the bolt handle when it is in the vertical position. The nosecap has a small bayonet boss & is similar to a SMLE MK I. The buttplate is also similar to the SMLE MK I w/out a trap. This specimen should be of extreme interest to the advanced early British service rifle collector. CONDITION: very good overall finish & appearance w/ metal parts turning to a pleasing brown patina. Rifle appears mechanically functional. Rifled bore very good. Stock has some dings, bruises & handling marks, but remains very attractive. There are three noticeable cracks to the rear of the trigger assembly on either side the longer being 2" & another crack on the right side about an 1" long 2" from trigger guard. BRITISH 303 TOOL ROOM PROTOTYPE SIMPLIFIED BOLT

ACTION RIFLE CIRCA 1920'S. Cal. 303 Brit. NSN. Bbl. 25.2". This tool room prototype features a modified cocking piece, extractor & spring, new trigger & charger bridge screwed on. The nose cap is similar to a BSA-Portuguese VEGUIRO Mauser. This is a predecessor to the Chief Superintendent of Armament Design Cheshunt simplified rifle series which occurred in mid 1942. This specimen using the Lee action retains the long range volley sights. MAGS: 1 detachable 10 rd. CONDITION: overall appearance & finish very good to near excellent w/ refinished bolt locking bar showing numerous small pits underneath. Nosecap also refinished over some light dings & pitting. Balance of metal parts are a pleasing brown patina, thinning to bare metal in places. Brass buttplate near excellent. Rifled bore is good to very good w/ wear to lands & light pitting throughout. Buttstock near excellent showing only the slightest of handling marks. Stock forward of receiver very good to near excellent w/ crack running 4" parallel to bore line from receiver joint forward. Buttstock is contemporary professional fitted replacement. Carry handle appears vintage. Receiver is obviously an original which was torch cut in accordance w/ BATF requirements, then professionally rewelded & remanufactured into this semi automatic firearm. Remanufactured 2 position safety switch which cannot move beyond 90° position. Operating mechanism tends to be a bit sticky w/ stiffness & does not consistently cycle; however, after operating more than a dozen times, seems to function just fine. MAGS: 13 total 30 rd. original mags. 12 Mags. are in an original green painted metal chest w/ carrying web strap. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original Bren tripod w/ extendable front leg which doubles as an anti-aircraft post. Second required post for anti-aircraft use, not present. Elevation mechanism & traverse stops present. Both functional. Spare 303 Brit. bbl. Australian mfg. Original buttstock missing hardware.
