Rare U.S. Small Arms Company Huntsman Model Knife Pistol

Lot # 1157 (Sale Order: 158 of 901)

.22 RF, 1 1/8" barrel with a very good bore. The metal surfaces on this very rare little combination knife-pistol are primarily a pewter gray patina with scattered light oxidation and light pitting remnants along its left scale, the right scale smoother showing evidence of an older cleaning many years ago which was lightly done. The pistol is marked only "Patented" on the hinged barrel section and the clip-point blade is 2 3/4" in length. The blade itself shows evidence of moderate sharpening over the years which has altered its original configuration, the center swelled section is now rather concave. The mechanism seems to work crisply with a strong striker spring. Overall an intriguing and very good example of these very rarely-encountered knife-pistols. These arms are specifically exempted from the conditions of the NFA, by BATFE. (36520-4515) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Perry Breechloading Sporting Rifle

Lot # 1171 (Sale Order: 172 of 901)

serial #38 (barrel only), 54 cal., 26" round barrel with an about very good bore having scattered oxidation and pitting still showing good rifling. This is a sporting rifle equipped with a military style forend secured by a barrel band, a brass blade front sight and v-notch rear sight, there is no sling bar. The buttstock is equipped with a special tubular magazine that holds 50 percussion caps that are automatically spring-fed on the nipple. The barrel retains about 50% of an old quality blue that has come in contact with some type of contaminate leaving the balance a smooth gray brown. The frame has been nicely cleaned removing the serial number and retains about 95% quality applied blue evenly fading to a brownish gray with light edge wear and a couple tiny dings and scratches. The breech assembly, lock and buttplate have a lovely professionally applied case-hardening with only light evidence of old pinprick pitting, the colors being quite brilliant on the top and bottom of the breechblock. The top flat of the breech is marked "A D PERRY / PATENTED" and "PERRY PATENT ARM Co / NEWMARK, NJ". The walnut stock rates about very good showing an old light cleaning with a thin hairline crack at the lower tang and an old repaired crack along the interior upper tang channel which has left the stock a bit loose and no longer sitting properly against the metal. The forend rates very good having been lightly cleaned as well with no visible cracks and only slight gaps at the frame. The hammer has become weak and the lever retention spring plate is a modern replacement. A neat, nice looking custom Perry Sporting rifle. (58525-6) {ANTIQUE}

Early U.S. Model 1873 Trapdoor Carbine by Springfield Armory

Lot # 1172 (Sale Order: 173 of 901)

Description Update (11/1/17): This lot has been withdrawn.

serial #18495, 45-70 Govt, 22" barrel with a bright very good plus bore showing strong evident rifling with scattered frosting and fine pitting. Falling just outside the first run of Custer Trapdoor carbines (17400-18400) the barrel has an overall smooth brown patina with perhaps a tiny impact mark or two acquired through the years, the band somewhat similar with light traces of gray. The frame, breechblock and tang are a much darker gray-brown with some very fine oxidation, while the lockplate and hammer are a pale smoky gray with areas of brown along the edges, the markings still visible. The triggerguard and buttplate are a rich dark brown with patches of moderate oxidation on the buttplate and the sling bar is a mottled gray brown with the ring pale gray overall. The stock rates good to about very good showing what is likely an old light cleaning still retaining a good amount of dents and marks, three thin cracks at the sling bar, a longer hairline crack along the left wrist and an old glue repaired angular crack in the right side of the stock between the frame and front of the lockplate. The wood is a bit shy at the toe and the cartouche and firing proof are no longer visible, however a large "305" is stamped in the left side of the stock under the rear sight. The carbine is equipped with a two position tumbler, iron firing pin and coarsely checkered hammer. The mechanism is crisp and mechanically functional. Accompanying the carbine is a collection of research, family letters and photos stating this carbine was given to a young Wylie Smith as his family traveled west by wagon train shortly after the war, where his older brothers served on opposites sides. The story told by Wylie's son Ernie was that the carbine was given to his father who was in his teens at the time by the wagon master for shooting a crow at 100 yards. It is not known if the photos are of the Smith family only they have been with the family for some time. Ernie Smith died in 1994 and the carbine was in his possession since the passing of his father in 1935 and the carbine was given to the consignor by his widow. A neat looking carbine with frontier history who's further research could prove interesting. (58527-7) {ANTIQUE}
