Japanese Tanegashima Matchlock Musket

Lot # 1698 (Sale Order: 699 of 901)

About 54 cal., 33 1/4" octagon barrel with a moderately oxidized bore. The barrel itself is a dark brown lightly oxidized patina showing scattered light pitting, a bit more moderate nearer the breech. It is sighted with a simple copper blade front sight and flat-top rear sight with thin filed groove at top. The brass hardware is a dull ochre patina, showing discoloration where it has come in contact with slow match over the years, the salts causing a darkening of the brass. The barrel is retained through small brass chrysanthemums left and right, these being the only real embellishment on the arm. There is a brass band at the breech area and a small brass strap over the top three flats of the buttstock to its rear. While there is no buttcap, there is a small brass strap from what we would consider the conventional comb over the heel of the butt. The mechanism seems to work well and the match arm catches the trip very well. The Asian hardwood stock rates very good with much original varnish, minor dings and handling marks with drying cracks at left side of breech and to the rear of the breech and a couple of small slivers missing here and there. There is one repaired area at the beginning of the forend about 9 1/2" long and about an 1/8" wide, it could be stained a bit darker for better camouflage. There is an antique ramrod present, its tip is slightly damaged and there is an inlay missing from the bottom of the stock of midway down its length. Overall an attractive and very honest Tanegashima in a rather nice short length. (38295-9) {ANTIQUE}
