Colt 1849 Pocket Model .31 caliber percussion showing original cloud scroll type engraving with small panel scenes on each side of the barrel lug. Only approximately a dozen panel scene engraved percussions are known and are very desirable to students of engraved Colt’s. Gray to brown patina finish with some light erosion and pinprick pitting. 18WHT-5 COLT S.A. #52783

Lot # 283 (Sale Order: 334 of 772)

Colt Single Action Army factory engraved revolver with double carved factory pearl grips described as Texas steer and Goddess of love motif in .44 caliber, barrel length ...morenot listed, nickel plated, Shipped to Capt. Smith, address unavailable, Nov. 5, 1879, 1 gun in shipment. Pictured in the book of Colt Engraving on page 424 and on page xiix of addendum where a story that has accompanied this gun is recanted at length. In summary Kid Curry of the Butch Cassidy Hole-In-The-Wall gang traded this revolver for fresh horses and saddles after the Wagner Montana train robbery. The trade was made with Plaz Price who had a relay station west of Hinsdale near N N Ranch where Plaz was acquainted. Plaz gave the gun to a friend who owned a saloon in Hinsdale. It mentions subject revolver, S/N 52783 was re-nickeled with barrel shortened to 5 ½” with honed down hair trigger (Work presumed to be factory). H L is scratched on outside of left grip. Also Sundance was known for fancy guns. Pictured in “The Official Record on the Colt Single Action Army Revolver, 1873-1895” by Don and Carol Wilkerson on page 342 and noted in Parsons 1949 book “Peacemaker and its rival”. A folder of information and research by previous owners is included but nothing is conclusive but a “Good story based on actual people, places and events that may be further researchable”. Sadly outlaws seldom ever authenticated their guns other than “Blackjack Ketchum” who took photos in jail of himself with the pistol he gave his jailer. This Colt in our opinion was a very fancy factory exhibition or display piece. The engraving is deluxe and profuse with engraved hammer, unusual “Pineapple” on top of backstrap and unique pattern of engraving. Also the 1st S.A. in records that letters with carved pearl and 1 of a very few with double carving (Less than 5). Also there is no number on loading gate and no number on the barrel and cylinder. The barrel was professionally shortened and original sight re-positioned. The parts like the barrel appear to have not been refinished but the remainder shows a very old refinish. 70%-80% old nickel finish remains. The barrel address is sharp. The frame markings are light. All matching visible serial numbers. The grips are very good with small losses and wear at high points from carry. In conclusion a very attractive and exceptional single action that Larry Wilson valued highly along with other old time experts. It is our belief it was factory display piece made 1876 and shipped 1879 when refinished after factory display. The key to this mystery was the name mentioned in letter Capt. Smith. Possibly James L. Smith who was hired by Wyoming Cattleman’s Assoc. in 1878. He was the man who captured Harry Longabaugh AKA “The Sundance Kid” also a member of the Hole-In-The Wall gang. Rare and interesting special ordered 1873 deluxe 1st Model rifle, S/N 8957 with a 28” extra-long round barrel, full mag, set trigger, XXXX deluxe checkered stock, beach s...moreights, case hardened, stabler, received in warehouse Sept. 15, 1875, shipped Sept 21, 1875 to order # 3722. The stock is mounted with a gold plaque inscribed “Presented to Edward Stabler, by Winchester Arms Co.”. The belly of the stock has gold framed small compass inlaid. NOTE: The ledger shows “Stabler” and the next line “Compass in stock” in the line for successive numeral. (Just recording error dropping line). This rifle remains in very good plus condition with 60%-80% original toning blue finish. 30%-50% case colors turning silver gray. The stocks are very good also with beautiful 4x grain and strong checkering at the wrist. Minor scratches, mars and normal imperfections. Good markings, good action, shiny bore and period swivels. The sights have been changed to standard type with unusual non-Winchester high quality early tang sight possibly 1 of a kind. Also the barrel shows small tap screw and milled groove behind the sight for early full length scope or tube. Note: The address is placed near the breach and the front sight is further forward. Edward Stabler is best known for the Stabler cut off on Spencer rifles but designed and fabricated other improvements for firearms in general and may have had a relationship to Winchester which should be further researched. A unique and early 1873 deluxe. (Antique) Est.: $14,000-$28,000
