NORTH AMERICAN MODEL 1911 SEMI AUTO PISTOL.

Lot # 2030A (Sale Order: 31 of 622)

Cal. 45 ACP. S# 93. Ordnance Department in 1918 issued a contract to the Ross Rifle company of Quebec, Canada for 500,000 pistols to be delivered on Dec., 31 1919. Unbekn...moreownst to Ordnance the Ross rifle company no longer existed. The Ross Rifle company became the Dominion Rifle factory & proceeded to dismantle the factory & dispose of all the machinery & material. The chairman of the Canadian board of war contracts (Holt Gurney) secured a commitment for the newly formed North American Arms Company, (Edmond Ryckman & John Denison) principles to mfg. the pistols in place of the now defunct Ross Rifle Company. The North American Arms Company failed to complete even a single pistol by the end of the war (Nov. 11, 1918) when the contract was cancelled. On Feb. 24, 1920 a settlement was reached between the U.S. government & the North American Arms Company resolving all claims made against the contract. Approx. 100 North American Model 1911 pistols were assembled either during the tooling up process (highly unlikely since NAA had only 5 months to tool up) or from parts completed after the contract was cancelled. Major differences between NAA & Colt are: uncheckered hammer, no lanyard loop on mainspring housing, S# is placed under the left stock at the bottom plus on the left side of the slide at rear & no acceptance or model markings at all. This gun appears on page 203 of Clawsons "Colt .45 Service Pistols" (Big book). MAGS: 1 - 7 rd. standard 2 tone non lanyard loop, probably Colt made. CONDITION: entire pistol has been refinished. S# 93 is in the proper place on frame at bottom beneath left grip. S# 5 appears on the slide at left rear. Trigger shows no sign of S#. Pistol was not detail stripped. Hammer normally uncheckered is checkered & appears Colt mfg. Slide stop is checkered, not serrated & appears Colt mfg. Front & rear sights appear to have been replaced. Stocks are normal 1911 style dbl. diamond & appear to be original. During refinish, bbl. at ejection port has been polished. Remainder of unmarked bbl. is blue. Bbl. bushing appears to be proper shape. Bore has mirror finish. PROVENANCE: From the Craig Baravalle Collection of Big Flats, New York. (18-4552/KK). CURIO. $20,000-30,000.

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL MODEL 1911A1 SEMI AUTO

Lot # 2042 (Sale Order: 43 of 622)

PISTOL. Cal. 45 ACP. S# Exp. No 21. Union Switch & Signal, a subsidiary of Westinghouse Air Brake Co. of Pittsburgh, Pa. received a contract of 200,000 1911A1 pistols. Th...moreis was later amended to 30,000 & then reamended to 55,000. In spite of the back & forth orders from ordnance, US&S made some of the best pistols of WWII. All pistols were finished w/ DuLite over sand blasted surface. Early pistols had Keyes Fibre stocks w/ no escutcheon rings. The bbl. bushings all have characteristic circular machining marks around the bore. There were 3 variations of "P" inspection marks. First no marks at all, second marked on the left edge of slide in front of rear sight (due to an error in the blueprints furnished), and the third having the "P" inspection mark centered on the top of the slide in front of the rear sight. All pistols had the wide serrated ramp front sight & square notched rear sight. All pistols have the stamped sheet metal trigger but bright blue finished, checkered mainspring housing & flat checkered hammer. "Exp" prefix pistols have been described as experimental but no documentation exists proving this. All of the pistols examined by this writer show some major defect. The most common defect is stripped out stock screw bushings. This pistol shows lg. forging voids, which would never pass ordnance inspection. A more rational explanation is the pistols were all rejected & scrapped. An accounting term for this would be "expensed". As Scott Meadows in volume 2 of "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols" states, "the explanation of exp prefix is largely a matter of opinion." This pistol is a good example of the reject explanation for "exp". This pistol is on page 326, figure 10-27 of "Colt .45 Service Pistols" (the big book) by Clawson. MAGS: 1-7 rd. made by Little w/ welded base. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: brass hang tag w/ number "326" ostensibly from the US&S museum. CONDITION: pistol shows major forging voids on receiver. Slide shows corrosion & pitting near serrations. Slide stop shows surface corrosion. Front plate of bbl. bushing is too thick. Stocks appear to be Keyes Fibre w/ escutcheon rings. Pistol could not be disassembled. Bbl. mfg. assumed to be correct. Front sight is serrated wide tapered. Rear sight is square notch flat top. Hammer is flat side & checkered. Grip safety appears to have been polished & refinished. Mag. catch does not fit properly & is not flush w/ receiver w/ no mag. installed. All other parts except bbl. bushing & grip safety appear to have DuLite finish w/ considerable corrosion in spots. Bbl. appears to be dirty & has frosting on lands, but may clean up. PROVENANCE: From the Craig Baravalle Collection of Big Flats, New York. (18-4455/KK). CURIO. $3,000-5,000.
