Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 .50 Express English Short Rifle

Lot # 3000 (Sale Order: 1 of 623)

Rare Special Order British Retailer Marked Winchester Model 1876 .50 Express Lever Action "English Short" Rifle

This English Short Express Rifle Model 1876 is configured similarly to the Model 1886 Lightweight in that it has a short 22 inch barrel (although not tapered), rifle style forearm, short magazine tube, and shotgun butt. A similar example is pictured on page 238 of "The Winchester Book" by Madis. In the data discussed on page 253 of the above book, Madis notes that only one of each 800 had a shorter than average barrel. This example was manufactured in 1878 as a second model with a dust cover guide rail attached to the receiver with two screws. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking on top and stamped with the British retailer marking "JAS KERR & Co./54 KING WM ST E.C" on the left side. British London proofs are stamped on the left side of the barrel and receiver. The dust cover is marked "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL 95 GRS." "50-95" is marked on the cartridge elevator. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1876." Unidentified characters are marked on the lower tang under the lever. The rifle is equipped with a dovetail blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The highly figured, XX deluxe walnut forearm and straight grip stock feature multi-point checkering. A circular inlay is added to both sides of the forearm near the forend cap. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XX" "and "863" along with a factory obliterated second assembly number. The assembly number "863" along with the letter "P" is marked on the stock inlet. The .50-95 Winchester Express was the largest caliber available for the Model 1876 and proved popular with big and dangerous game hunters. Many Model 1876 rifles chambered for this powerful cartridge were shipped to England and then found their way to Africa and India where they were often employed against big cats. Theodore Roosevelt loved his .45-75 '76, but he and other Americans scorned the .50 Express, and thus, the Model 1876 was only produced in limited numbers chambered for that cartridge compared to the smaller calibers.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel retains traces of original blue finish in the protected areas, otherwise a smooth brown-gray patina. The receiver is a mixture of silvered out original case colors and smooth gray patina. The highly figured revarnished wood is also very good with a repaired forearm, a few short hairline stress cracks at the tangs and on wrist, some minor handling marks and recut checkering. A crack is present on the front underside of the forearm. Mechanically excellent.

Engraved New Haven Arms Company No. 2 Lever Action Navy Pistol

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 3 of 623)

Attractive, Deluxe Factory Engraved, New Haven Arms Company No. 2 Lever Action Navy Pistol

This Deluxe No. 2 Lever Action Navy pistol was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1860. Only about 300 No. 2 Navy pistols were manufactured with six-inch barrels. This pistol has a silver-plated frame with deluxe engraving and two-piece antique ivory grips. The engraving features open scrollwork on a punch-dot background on the frame and side plates with cross-hatch and dot engraving on the top of the receiver ahead of the ejection port, elaborate border work on the upper edges of the frame and side plates and scrollwork on the top of the frame and the back strap. The engraving is very similar to the engraving on the pair of No. 2 Lever Action pistols with silver-plated frames owned by Oliver Winchester and illustrated on page 97 of "VOLCANIC FIREARMS" by Lewis and Rutter. Although nearly identical in style, the engraving on this pistol appears to be slightly more detailed. The engraving was almost certainly executed by the same hand as the engraving on Oliver Winchester's pistols. The six-inch octagon barrel has an integral, eight-shot, magazine with full rib. The rib indicates the barrel was probably made by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and subsequently utilized by the New Haven Arms Company. The barrel has a crowned muzzle, rounded T-bar spring, brass cone-shaped front sight and clam-shell shaped magazine follower. The frame has circular cut-outs on the front and rear of the ejection port, a simple dove-tail mounted rear sight, hammer with coarse, hand-cut knurling on the spur and loading lever with finger hole. "1" is stamped on the left side of the loading lever and the serial number "2366" is stamped on the right side of the lever. The serial number is also stamped on the right side of the butt beneath the grips. The barrel has a high polish blue finish. The bolt, rear sight and cartridge elevator are fire blue. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened and the brass frame is silver-plated.

Class: Antique

Fine. This pistol is all original and retains 80% plus of the blue finish on the barrel/magazine. The New Haven Arms Company legend on the top flat is crisp. The delicate silver-plated finish on the frame is visible on the areas protected by the grips. The exposed areas of the frame have a very attractive untouched patina. The well executed engraving is deep and crisp. The frame has no significant handling marks and perfect side plate joints. Small amounts of fire blue finish are visible on the cartridge elevator and rear sight. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have faded to a mottled gray-brown patina. The attractively aged grips are in very fine condition with only several tiny stress cracks around the screw escutcheons. This deluxe No. 2 Navy Pistol is one of the most elaborately engraved and finished Volcanic pistols extant and nearly identical to the engraved Volcanic pistols owned by Oliver Winchester. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.

Venditti Lever Action Pistol

Lot # 3003 (Sale Order: 4 of 623)

Extremely Scarce Venditti Lever Action Pistol

This extremely scarce lever action pistol is one of only 350 manufactured across the first and second models of Italian maker Pietro Venditti. This pistol is similar in many ways to the American Volcanic Pistols, and until recently was thought to have influenced Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson in their design. It is now surmised, that Venditti did not have his first experience with firearms design until after his release from prison in 1860, well after Smith & Wesson had patented their design. This is supported by the lack of any appearance of this mechanism in the "Catalogue of the Great Exhibition" printed in 1851 where Smith and or Wesson supposedly got the idea, as well as the fact that no documentation exists showing either man leaving the United States at that time. For more information on this subject see pages 145-148 of "Volcanic Firearms: Predecessor to the Winchester Rifle" by Edmund Lewis and Stephen Rutter. The barrel bears the second model style marking "VENDITTI E CI LANCUSI" on the top flat. This marking is flanked by factory engraved scrollwork that extends to the top of the frame, frame sides at the front, side plates, and back strap. The frame is brass with iron side plates. The pistol has fixed sights, a 10-shot tubular magazine, two piece checkered grips with escutcheons, and lanyard swivel. The follower retention screw is absent.

Class: Antique

Fair, showing patches of brown patina on the blue parts and an attractive deep yellow color to the brass. There is scattered minor spotting on the metal. The grips are fair with repair visible on the left side, moderate dings and scratches, and worn checkering. The follower spring will not compress fully, otherwise mechanically functions with slightly loose lever.Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.

Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3004 (Sale Order: 5 of 623)

Nimschke Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1872 and period embellished by L. D. Nimschke most likely for a New York retailer. The gilt finished receiver features profuse broad foliate scrollwork on a punch dot background along with vacant inscription panels, dog head on the left side plate, and geometric patterns such as entwining lines, cross hatching and diamonds. Additional scrollwork appears on the upper left and right barrel flats at the breech, buttplate tang and forend cap. The barrel also features the two-line New Haven address/King's improvement patent marking inside a dot outlined oval panel flanked by scrollwork, scrollwork surrounding the dovetail blade front sight, engraved band at the muzzle and star burst pattern behind the period replacement buckhorn rear sight. A diamond pattern is engraved on the cartridge elevator. There are sling swivels and a trapdoor brass buttplate (cleaning rod not included). The serial number is stamped behind the trigger. "LS," is marked on the lower tang.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 80% of the period retailer applied nickel plating with the balance a smooth gray patina. The brass components have an attractive mellow appearance. Light traces of gilt remain on the receiver. The engraving is crisp. The revarnished wood is very good with the figured stock a replacement and minor dings and scratches overall. Mechanically excellent.

Winchester Model 1885 Special Order High Wall Schuetzen Rifle

Lot # 3005 (Sale Order: 6 of 623)

Phenomenal, Incredibly Rare and Well-Documented Winchester Model 1885 Special Order High Wall Schuetzen Rifle in 22 Short with Factory Mounted Winchester A5 Scope Pictured in Clark Campbell's Book On Winchester Single Shot Rifles

This is a beautiful example of a late production, very rare special order Winchester Model 1885 Schuetzen target rifle manufactured in 1909 with the rare special order Laudensack pattern walnut forend with the cork palm/hand rest. This forend is identical to the version used on the Winchester High Wall International Team rifles, that were chambered in 30-06, only this rifle is chambered in .22 Short. This complete rifle is documented in a Winchester factory letter dated June 1987. Although not listed by serial number, we believe it to be the same exact rifle discussed and shown on pages 140-141 of the book "The Winchester Single-Shot" by Clark Campbell. This Schuetzen rifle is in excellent condition with the original Winchester high polish blued finish, on the metal parts with a color casehardened breech block and spur lever. The factory letter lists the following special order features: a coil spring, takedown action, which is very rare for a high wall, as most were the earlier flat spring, fixed barrel action. Schuetzen set triggers, a heavy No. 4 marked, full octagon barrel with no sight slots, a special checkered forend, and the Winchester factory installed Winchester A5 scope. It also states it has the "Laudensack" model walnut stock and forend that are duplicates of the samples sent in. This rifle is actually fitted with a rare straight grip lower tang that is also very rarely seen on a Schuetzen rifle as most were pistol grip models. The buttstock is also fitted with a Laudensack pattern, blued, double prong buttplate and although the letter states a "Helm pattern buttplate" it's actually a Laudensack pattern. The length of pull on the stock is very long as its actually measures 14 inches OAL from the front trigger. The Winchester A5 scope has the standard, target type adjustable mounts, with a standard cross-hair. The scope has been correctly installed on the top flat with original Winchester scope blocks. The barrel is correctly marked on the left barrel flat with the two-line Winchester factory markings that read: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." and standard patent dates followed by "22 SHORT" at the breech end. The top of the barrel and receiver are both stamped with the Winchester "WP" oval proof roll mark. The buttstock and forend were all manufactured from extra fancy figured walnut with the stock and forend also factory checkered as noted. Also included is a 1965 dated Winchester Gun Museum letter that shows information matching the aforementioned factory letter and a 1966 dated receipt from N. Flayderman & Co. Antique Firearms for a "Hi-wall Sheutzen rifle" implying that this rifle was at one time part of the collection of the legendary arms collector and scholar, Norm Flayderman.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent with 95% of the original blue finish overall with high spot wear on the edges of the barrel and the front end of the muzzle. The breech block and loading lever both retain 75% of their original case colors overall. The special order stock and forend are both in very fine condition with only very minor handling marks and crazing of the varnish overall. The checkering is excellent with sharp, distinct checkering overall. It also still retains most of the cork palm/hand rest on the underside of the forend, with some slight wear/flaking along the lower edges. This is very rare as usually the cork either worn down or just deteriorated from sweat and age. The scope is fine with 70% of it original factory blue finish overall showing minor rub marks on the top and the side of the tube from sliding in the mounts. The reticle is intact and the optics are clear. Just a fabulous, beautiful example of a super rare ultra special order Winchester Schuetzen rifle.

Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Flat Side Carbine

Lot # 3006 (Sale Order: 7 of 623)

Desirable Early Production Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Flat Side Lever Action Carbine

Manufactured in 1867. This very scarce Winchester Model 1866 flat side carbine features the highly desirable early features such as the Henry and King patent dates barrel marking ("HENRY'S PATENT-OCT. 16. 1860/KING'S PATENT-MARCH 29. 1866."), flat loading port cover, two screw upper tang and "Henry Drop" receiver. The barrel has the first style barrel band with integral front sight blade and an early two position leaf rear sight marked "300" and "500" yards. It has the early first pattern threaded magazine tube end cap. The left side of the receiver has the original factory installed staple and saddle ring. It has the first pattern, long, coarse, borderless checkered hammer that lacks a half-cock notch. The lever loop is the early small size. The brass crescent buttplate has a trapdoor, and the buttstock compartment contains a three piece metal cleaning rod. The left side of the lower tang is correctly stamped with a small assembly number ("1672") followed by the serial number ("15089"). Matching serial numbers are on the left side of the lower tang, stock inlet, and buttplate. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, and loading gate are blued. The hammer, lever, and trigger are casehardened. The buttstock and forearm are both fancy grain walnut. In "The Winchester Book" by author George Madis on page 57 he estimated that the total number of First Model 1866s manufactured was approximately 3,500 guns, equally divided between rifles and carbines. He further estimated that the survival rate for these early Winchesters was about 25% and that "less than 875" First Model 1866 rifles and carbines were available to collectors.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel, magazine tube, barrel bands, loading gate, and lever have a mottled brown-gray patina. The barrel marking is legible. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer. The brass receiver and buttplate have a highly attractive honey colored aged appearance along with typical minor handling marks. The side plates fit tightly. The refinished wood is also very good with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. This desirable example of a Winchester deluxe Model 1866 flat side carbine will be a welcomed addition to any Winchester collection.

Earliest Known Winchester Model 1886 .50/100/450 Rifle

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 8 of 623)

Exceptional Documented Earliest Known Winchester Model 1886 .50/100/450 Lever Action Heavy Barrel Rifle with Factory Letter

As the most powerful big bore Model 1886, the .50/100/450 Express has held a special place in the hearts of Winchester collectors and have remained a highly sought after dangerous game rifle in any condition. With only 331 manufactured, there are hardly enough surviving Winchester "Big Fifty" Model 1886s to meet demand. Offered here is the first Model 1886 Winchester manufactured in .50/100/450 Express, making this high condition specimen a holy grail in big bore Winchester collecting. The included factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .50/100 caliber, set trigger, plain pistol grip stock, Lyman front and rear sights and hard rubber buttplate when it was received in the warehouse on January 13, 1894 and shipped on January 18, 1894. Based on research compiled in an included treatise by Jim Paul and Tom Adams, this rifle is the first Model 1886 documented in Winchester factory records to be chambered in .50/100/450 Express. The researchers also stated that there was only one out of the 331 factory documented Model 1886s that left the factory with a 32 inch extra length barrel chambered in .50/100/450 Express. Note that the factory letter for this rifle does not list barrel length and was therefore missed in the study that relied on "microfiche copies of the original Winchester records which are stored at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming." Nevertheless, the 32 inch barrel in .50/100/450 Express is extremely rare. The rifle is equipped with a combination Beach front sight, three leaf rear sight and folding tang peep sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "50 EX" at the breech. The lower tang is stamped with the two-line patent dates marking as well as having the serial number. As stated in the factory letter, the action is fitted with a set trigger, a feature, according to Paul and Adams, that is factory documented on only 15 Model 1886s in .50/100/450 Express. The barrel, magazine and bolt are blued, the loading gate is niter blue, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are nicely figured plain walnut. The pistol grip has an ebony insert. The buttplate has a hard rubber shotgun Winchester buttplate. In an accompanying letter noted firearms collector and dealer Herb Glass Sr. called the rifle a "choice rarity in the Winchester field" and recounted the provenance. "I discovered this gun in 1970," wrote Glass, "and immediately sold it to Richard P. Mellon. It remained in the Mellon collection for 10 years and in 1980, I took it in trade and sold it almost immediately. It is 100% original and you may well be proud to have it in your collection."

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 85% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. 95% original blue remains on the bolt. 60% original niter blue remains on the loading gate. The forend has silvered out with traces of original case color patterns remaining. The 70% vivid original case colors remain on the frame. 50% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The wood is also very fine with minor dings and scratches and retaining most of the original finish. Mechanically excellent. Do not miss your chance to acquire Winchester's first "Big Fifty" Model 1886! The historical significance, highly sought after .50/100/450 Express chambering and condition make this rifle a must have for the serious Winchester collector!

Early Production, Deluxe Samuel J. Hoggson Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

This deluxe, factory engraved, 1st Model Henry lever action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in 1863. This rifle has the early production receiver with rear sight dovetail, and first style buttplate with rounded heel. The buttplate has the standard hinged trapdoor. The magazine has the large diameter follower introduced around serial number 1900, and the receiver has the beveled follower cut. The left side of the stock has a factory sling swivel, and the left side of the barrel has the Henry screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The barrel has the square back, nickel-silver, front sight blade and third variation folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch and elevator bar with rounded ends. Both the front and rear sights are original to the rifle. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "HENRY'S PATENT.OCT 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." in two lines. The serial number is stamped on: (1) the top barrel flat behind the rear sight, (2) on the inside of the buttplate at the toe and (3) on the shanks of both hand-fitted buttplate screws (the stock was not removed to examine the serial number on the lower tang and the stock). The upper and lower tang screws are, correctly, not serial numbered. All of the visible serial numbers match. The brass receiver and buttplate have the silver-plated finish found on deluxe, factory engraved Henry rifles. The barrel and integral magazine have a high polish blue finish. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock is highly figured American walnut with a high polish piano finish. This engraving features large scrolls on a punch-dot background with large floral petals on the forward portion of the frame. A leaping deer is engraved on the left side plate. This engraving was executed by Samuel J. Hoggson for the New Haven Arms Co. Very similar engraving and finish are illustrated on Henry rifle serial number 7008 illustrated on pages 30 and 31 of "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. "JAMES. MALAND" is hand-stamped through the finish on the left side of the barrel ahead of the rear sight.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. This rare deluxe, factory engraved Henry rifle retains 60% of the original blue finish on the barrel and 85% strong original silver-plated finish on the receiver and buttplate. The barrel has scattered age spotting and high-point wear with two small (1 1/2-inch by 1/2-inch) spots of deep pitting on the left barrel flat below the rear sight. The barrel legend and serial number are very crisp. The hand-stamped marking is that of a former owner and not contemporary with the rifle. The silver-plated finish on the receiver and buttplate is tarnished and shows minor high-point wear. The hammer retains 75% of the original case colors while the lever has a brown patina. The deluxe, fancy grade walnut stock retains most of the original piano finish with scattered minor handling marks and some scuffing from contact with the sling swivel. The factory engraving is sharp. This is an outstanding example of a high condition, deluxe, factory engraved Henry rifle with desirable first style receiver. It would be difficult to find a better example of a factory engraved Henry rifle. A rare opportunity to acquire this extraordinary fresh-to-the-market Factory Engraved Henry Rifle!

Special Order Engraved Winchester Model 1876 50 Express Rifle

Lot # 3010 (Sale Order: 11 of 623)

Special Order Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 .50 Express Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This deluxe, factory engraved, Winchester Model 1876 Express Rifle has a rare matted barrel. This rifle is accompanied by a factory letter that describes this Model 1876 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: Express, Barrel Type: Octagon, Trigger: Plain, Checkered stock, Pistol grip, Shotgun butt, Rubber butt, Casehardened, Engraved" and "Matted barrel". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on August 22, 1882. The rifle has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover guide rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. The full octagon barrel has a rarely encountered matted top flat and is fitted with a "Rocky Mountain" front sight with blue steel blade and flat top sporting rear sight. A Winchester folding peep sight with fifty minute graduations is mounted on the receiver tang. The forearm cap and sides of the lever have restrained factory scroll engraving. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and a piano finish. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The stock is fitted with a black, hard rubber, checkered buttplate. The barrel lacks the normal Winchester legend due to the matted top flat. The caliber markings "50/CAL." are stamped on the right and left barrel flats respectively. The top of the dust cover is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL. 95 GRS." in two lines. "50-95" is roll-stamped in script numerals across the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number is stamped in tiny numbers across the lower tang behind the lever latch. The barrel and magazine have a blue finish. The dust cover and loading gate are niter blue and the forearm cap receiver, hammer, trigger and lever are casehardened.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel assembly retains 85% plus of the original blue; the finish is thin along the bottom of the magazine. The dust cover and loading gate have 90% plus of the niter blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger and lever retain 80% of the slightly faded case colors. The engraving on the forearm cap and lever is crisp. The fancy grain stock and forearm are in very good overall condition with sharp checkering. The forearm has most of the original oil finish with handling wear between the rear of the checkered panel and the receiver. The stock has a semi-gloss finish and is slightly chipped along the top and bottom edge of the left wrist at the frame juncture. This is an attractive original Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 .50 Express rifle with highly desirable, special order features, including matted barrel and factory engraving.

Documented Special Order Antique Winchester Deluxe Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle with Extra Length Barrel, 25 Cartridge Magazine, Fancy Birdseye Maple Stock, and Factory Letter

The included factory letter confirms the serial number, caliber, barrel length, full length 25 cartridge magazine tube, hand-made fancy bird's eye maple checkered pistol grip stock, and March 15, 1898 date of shipment. The letter also confirms several times the rifle was returned to the Winchester factory for unspecified repairs between 1900 and 1909. Standard early style dovetail blade front and fixed notch rear sights on the barrel with the fourth style barrel marking, Winchester "WP" proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech, casehardened receiver, checkered hammer spur, and three-line model and patent markings on the upper tang. Twelve groove, short slide handle and capped, bird's eye maple checkered pistol grip stock with crescent steel buttplate. The information on page 232 of "Winchester Slide Action Rifles: Volume I" by Ned Schwing states that only 4 birds eye maple stocks were ordered during the production of the casehardened variant Second Model 1890. The information given on page 235 of the same book states that only 10 26 inch barrels were manufactured during the Second Model period.

Class: Antique

Very good with 30% factory blue finish on the barrel and magazine tube mixed with a rough brown patina, areas of edge wear, scratches, and dings. The receiver has a mostly mottled silver/gray patina with shadows of original case colors, light spotting overall, and some burs on the top edge of the receiver. The wood is good as refinished with numerous dings throughout, heavily worn checkering, some chipping around the tangs and buttplate, and mostly brown patina on the buttplate. Mechanically excellent. A truly unique Winchester!

New Haven Arms Company No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol

Lot # 3013 (Sale Order: 14 of 623)

Scarce New Haven Arms Company No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol

This No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1857. This pistol has a plain brass frame that lacks the factory engraving found on most of the 850 No.1 lever actions manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company between 1857 and 1862. The pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine, brass frame, loading lever with finger hole and two-piece, flat base, walnut grips. The .31 caliber, Type III barrel has no rib. The barrel has a crowned muzzle, rounded T-bar spring and pinchback front sight. The magazine has a small, brass, clam-shaped follower. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line New Haven Arms Company legend: "NEWHAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14.1854". The brass frame has a simple, dove-tail mounted, rear sight and semi-circular cut-outs at the front and rear of the ejection port. The bolt has a single hook extractor. The hammer has borderless, hand-cut, knurling on the spur. The serial number "50", is stamped on the left side of the butt beneath the grip and on the inside of both grips. The barrel has a high polish blue finish, the frame is natural brass, the rear sight, bolt and cartridge elevator are fire blue, the hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened and the walnut grips have a high gloss piano finish.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel has 40% of the original high polish blue finish with edge wear on the barrel flats and muzzle, and scattered spots of age discoloration. The New Haven Arms Company legend is crisp. The brass frame has a very attractive, untouched, patina and remains in very fine condition with near perfect side plate joints. Traces of fire blue finish remain on protected areas of the rear sight and cartridge elevator. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 50% of the muted case colors with some surface discoloration on the bottom of the lever. The grips are also fine and have 80% of the original piano finish with some finish loss on the lower edges and some slight handling marks. This is a fine representative example of a scarce New Havens Arms Company No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol with scarce plain frame. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.

Venditti Lever Action Pistol

Lot # 3014 (Sale Order: 15 of 623)

Extremely Scarce Documented Venditti Lever Action Pistol

For more information on this see pages 145-148 of "Volcanic Firearms: Predecessor to the Winchester Rifle" by Edmund Lewis and Stephen Rutter. This pistol can also been seen pictured on page 146 of the same book.

Very good, with an artificial brown patina visible on the barrel, a deepened yellow tone to the brass, and a few minor marks. The slightly undersized grips are good with a few minor dings and well-defined recut checkering. The grip screw is an incorrect replacement. Mechanically functions properly.Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.

Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Rifle with Unique Swiss Cheek Piece

Lot # 3015 (Sale Order: 16 of 623)

Extremely Rare Factory Documented Special Order, Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Swiss Cheek Piece in Winchester 1873 Book

This is an exceptionally rare example of a Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Swiss cheekpiece, pistol grip stock, and nickel plated Buttplate. This rifle is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter and copies of the Winchester factory ledger. In addition, this rifle is pictured and described on page 141 of "WINCHESTER'S NEW MODEL OF 1873" Vol. I by James D. Gordon who states: "One of the most unusual features to be found on a Model 1873 is the cheekpiece. These are usually associated with target rifles." The Cody Museum letter lists the manufacturer's date for this rifle as: "Rifle, 32 caliber, Barrel Length: 26 inches, Barrel Shape: Octagon, Plain trigger, Fancy wood, Checkered stock with pistol grip, Swiss cheek piece" and "Casehardened". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on June 29, 1894. The rifle has a special order, 26-inch barrel. The barrel has a Rocky Mountain front sight with nickel-silver blade and a buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight with serrated edges. A graduated peep sight with late style rounded base is mounted on the upper tang. The special order, casehardened, Third Model receiver has an integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The forearm and pistol grip are highly figured, 3X, fancy grade walnut with a high polish piano finish and factory "Style H" checkering. The early style rounded pistol grip with horn insert on the bottom. The special order cheek piece and Swiss Buttplate were intended for off-hand competition shooting while the 26-inch barrel provided a longer sight radius and better balance. The top of the rifle barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN.U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860-" ahead of the rear sight. "32 W.C.F." is stamped on the top of the barrel just in front of the rounded receiver step and "32 CAL" is roll-stamped in script letters across the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number is correctly stamped across the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Class: Antique

Very fine overall. 95% of the slightly faded original blue finish is present on the barrel and full-length magazine. The markings are crisp. The case colors on the receiver sides, side plates, hammer and lever remain 60% intact. The case colors on the contact points on the receiver bottom, forward edges and top show light handling wear with traces of silver patina. The dust cover has a gray-brown patina. The highly figured, fancy grain, stock and forearm are both very fine and retain most of the original high polish piano finish. The finish on the bottom and sides of the forearm between the receiver and the rear edge of the checkered panel has dulled slightly from handling; the remainder of the forearm and all of the stock retain the high polish finish. The fine checkering on the forearm and pistol grip shows minimal wear. There are a few very minor handling marks on the forearm and the stock. This is an exceptional example of an extremely rare, deluxe, special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with documented cheek piece and Swiss Buttplate.

New Haven Arms Co. First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3016 (Sale Order: 17 of 623)

Early Production Three Digit Serialized New Haven Arms Co. First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle

Offered here is a desirable First Model Henry rifle as manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1862. Early features include the sight dovetail (empty) on the brass receiver and brass trapdoor buttplate with rounded heel. The barrel features a German silver blade front sight, a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards, and the "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN.CT." legend (faint). There are no provisions for a lever catch, sling hook loop, or a buttstock sling swivel. The receiver and buttplate are plated in nickel. The early three digit serial number "307" is found on the barrel, left side of the lower tang, all three tang screws, both buttplate screws, and buttplate. Includes a desirable original four piece hickory cleaning rod. Experts believe that most of the 7,500 Henry rifles manufactured between April 1862 and January 1865 were purchased for use in the Civil War and saw some military service. Aside from 900 rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in 1863-1864 to arm the 1st D.C. Cavalry Regiment, nearly all Henry rifles used in the Civil War were privately purchased by soldiers who wanted to have the most advanced firearm available and take advantage of the sustained firepower of a 15-shot magazine rifle. As a result, the great majority of the Henry rifles under serial number 7,500 show moderate to heavy wear. Henry rifles manufactured during the Civil War with any original finish are very rare.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel and magazine have a mottled brown patina. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. 95% of the period retailer applied nickel plated finish remains on the frame and buttplate. The receiver has tight fitting side plates. The wood is also fine with a repaired wrist, couple short stress cracks at the toe and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
