Verbeeck Player Pipe Organ

Lot # 2138D (Sale Order: 151 of 359)

As fairgrounds became more popular in the late 1800's, their musical needs grew. The period of greatest activity of fairground organ manufacture and development is from the later 1880s to the introduction of effective electrical sound amplification in the mid-1920s. The organ chassis was typically provided with an ornate and florid decorative case fa...ade designed to be a further fairground attraction in its own right as with all fairground equipment.

The motive force for a fairground organ is typically wind under pressure generated from mechanically powered sets of bellows mounted in the base of the instrument. The instruments, designed to be operated without a human performer, are keyboard-less apart The organ is played mechanically by a strip of cards perforated with the musical data and registration controls called book music. Among some of the most popular makers of these organs was Verbeeck. This is a wonderful example of the craftsmanship these organs featured. After 100 years this organ is still in working condition! Beautiful hand painted murals and stenciling all around the organ and wood scroll work.

Walking Beam Steam Engine

Lot # 2142B (Sale Order: 157 of 359)

Titled "The Age of Elegance" this is one of the finest model steam engines you will find! The "Beam" engine is a type of steam engine where a pivoted overhead beam is used to apply the force from a vertical piston to a vertical connecting rod. Around 1705 Thomas Newcomen used a configuration such as this one to remove water from mines in Cornwall England. The efficiency of the engines was improved by James Watt who added a separate condenser, Jonathan Hornblower and Arthur Wolf. Although beam engines were first used to pump water out of mines or into canals, they were also used to pump water to supplement the flow for a waterwheel powering a mill. This Walking Beam Steam Engine is modeled from a Circa 1850 Twenty Horse Engine. With HIGH DETAIL this is an incredible piece to any steam collector!
