A) Small skinning knife measuring 8-7/8" overall with a 4-3/8" blade, walnut handle. Contained within a beaded leather scabbard with geometric designs utilizing red, yellow, deep blue and white beads. CONDITION: Knife blade shows expected wear with some surface roughness. Scabbard is in very good condition with minor wear at the tip. B) Pair of leather gauntlets with fur outer facings, grip side with plain leather and adjustment strap marked "English Make". CONDITION: The fur is in excellent condition, grip side showing moderate wear. Leather remains soft and supple.

Unattributed painting c. 19th century. Painting depicts a scene of a mountain man and several Indians involved in a fight. Period weapons are visible including a large Bowie knife, a Tomahawk and parts of a gun stock and gun barrel. The mountain man is brandishing a Bowie knife and wears a powder horn in his belt. The Indians are portrayed in headdresses and buckskins. The mountain man has killed or wounded at least 2 of the Indians. Painting was housed in a 3" wide gold frame which remains with the painting. CONDITION: Fair. Original canvas is partially detached from the stretcher. Painting has crazing and some minor paint loss. CG

LARGE GERMAN SIEGE CROSSBOW WITH WINDLASS AND QUARREL.

Lot # 1009 (Sale Order: 9 of 523)      

Of larger than normally encountered size measuring 29" across prod and 45" from stirrup to rear of windlass. Wrapped string and windlass cord appear original. Simple bow straps with fluted decorated nosepiece. Inlaid with staghorn and mother of pearl geometrics and lining. Faceted and turned trigger, that projects out to right side. Bone nut retained by pierced plaques. Spiral fluted windlass cranks. Small cheekpiece on right side. Accompanied by a diamond headed quarrel with hand forged point and wings replaced by a soft wood; red number "96-102A" on shaft indicates possible museum display. CONDITION: Very good, and very pleasing. Channel staghorn is missing approximately 3/4 of its length and one other inlay is missing behind nut. Some lining lifted. Metal has acquired a lovely patina throughout with flashes of dove grey. Nosepiece with some minor chipping. Wood is very good with a few bumps and bruises and a couple of minor cracks that appear to be stable; additional layer of varnish applied at one point with a noticeable drip on left side. Windlass appears to operate properly, but has not been completely retracted to avoid accidental breakage. Quarrel is very good with metal patinaed and some normal bumps and bruises to wood. This is a really nice example of one of the rarer crossbow forms. EW

Small hand stop. Wrought iron bow with old (period?) woven string. Simple iron stirrup and nose reinforcement. Rounded cheekpiece. Simple trigger shoe and guard made of iron. CONDITION: Good. Iron has acquired a lovely patina with some appropriate forging flaws in iron. Linen string with some fraying at extremities. A few inlays are either missing or partially broken; a few replaced. Mechanism has "kicked" the top of the stock and split wood there. A crossbow with great visual appeal with much of its original decoration. EW

French gilted brass mounted hunting sword with a straight double edge blade, engraved and gilted with foliage and trophies on a blued panel. The hilt is comprised of a crossguard cast with dog heads, checkered grip and lion's head pommel. The leather scabbard retaining its throat featuring an engraved panel with boar's head within a hunting horn decoration, drag missing. CONDITION: Blade is mostly bright with areas of minor dark staining mixed with small areas of pitting, gilt and blue decoration show wear, tip has been reshaped. Grip retains most of its gilt finish. Scabbard leather has old re-stitching but remains strong. Throat retains about 60% gilt surface. DG

UNUSUAL AND RARE GERMAN STAG-ANTLER WHEEL-LOCK POWDER FLASK.

German c. 1620, this flask measures about 9 - 1/2" tall. Scrimshawed throughout with a coat of arms, a night wearing a morian before a crowned king and other Renaissance decoration. This flask is most unusual featuring a conventional brass spout and with an iron priming mechanism at the base. CONDITION: Beautiful golden honey patination throughout the horn. Iron components are dark and unpolished. Horn body is in very fine original condition. The brass portion of the spout has been repaired at the seam. A very good flask. DG

Bottom engraved with latticework of long central line intersected by vertical strokes joined by graceful curves top and bottom. CONDITION: Very good. Short surface gap on reverse. FRENCH ‘MONTMORENCY’ SABER WITH FOLDING SIDE-GUARD, C. 1780-1800

A slotted-hilt, short saber with stirrup-shaped guard of brass, with brass backstrap ending in a flat-capped pommel with diamond capstan for blade, and spiral-grooved, wooden grip wrapped with leather and twisted wire in the channels, commonly called “les Montmorency” form. It has a slightly-curved, 30 in. L blade with single, wide fuller most of its length and a 15 in. L narrow fuller or blood groove, centered on the blade just below the spine ending in front where the 7 in. false edge begins. This form of hilt had become popular by c. 1780, but the folding, slotted side-guard as seen on this specimen seems to have been an addition to the original form beginning c. 1785-1790. The folding-guard saber was quite popular among French infantry and naval officers during the Revolutionary and Consular period and copied by other European makers. CONDITION: the blade has moderate to heavy pitting from the tip inwards some four inches, while the folding guard is missing about ½ inch of its scallop-edged, outer bar near the counterguard; the spring-locking pin for the side-guard’s open position is now missing from the inside of the counterguard. Provenance: deaccessioned from the Anderson House Museum, The Society of the Cincinnati. JLK

NAPOLEONIC ERA BRITISH NAVAL DIRK AND FRENCH BOARDING CAP (LOT OF 2).

A) British fighting dirk of the period 1790-1815 with overall length of 18 7/8 inches; straight, double-edged blade terminating in a spear-point, 13 3/8 inches long by 9/16 inch wide at guard, with gilded, narrow, central fuller. Hilt with gilded brass mounts consisting of 'S' crossguard, front ferrule, and flat-capped pommel, the ivory grip, pommel and ferrule of octagonal profile. B) A "casquet" or open-framed headpiece, said to be for a boarding cap. Of heavy sheet-brass construction, consisting of a two 1 1/4 inch-wide strips with rolled edges, one running from front to back and the other crosswise, riveted to a headband or base, similarly made of sheet brass, 1 1/2 inches deep in front and 2 1/2 inches behind, with a 1 9/16 x 1 inch iron loop attached on each side for a leather chinstrap. Casquet or boarding cap dimensions: 6 3/4 inches high with oval of crown 8 by 6 7/8 inches. Presumably of early 19th century French manufacture, as its materials and method of construction closely match that of a French military horse muzzle from that period.

A) Model 1816 Prussian infantry hanger. The Prussian King, Frederick William III's crown and cypher clearly engraved on the blade with date 1831 on the spine. Cast brass guard with clearly stamped regimental markings. CONDITION: Blade is mostly smooth and grey with areas of minor dark staining. Guard is in very good condition with minor dents and scratches. B) Dirk measuring 22-3/4" overall, produced utilizing a British triangular-blade bayonet with inspector stamps at the ricasso. Handle is turned ebony with a brass collar. CONDITION: Blade is smooth and grey with a few areas of minor surface rust. Grip in very good condition with minor wear. DG

1848 KNECHT OFFICER'S SABER AND PRUSSIAN P1873 BLUCHER SABER (LOT OF 2)

A) PETER KNECHT OFFICER’S SABER DATED 1848. The single-edged, curved blade is 33 in. L x 1 in. W at ricasso and has a clipped point; etched with generic martial panoplies and floral scrolling, so most likely this saber, patterned after that carried by Prussian infantry officers since the 1830's, is one made for export to the American market by noted Solingen sword cutler, Peter Knecht. It is marked ‘P. Knecht’ on the obverse face near ricasso and ‘Solingen / 1848’ on recto. Hilt with reverse-P grip, steel mounted with brass plating over it, with shagreen-wrapped grips with two strands of twisted wire in the grooves. CONDITION: Some light wear to grip and the blade very good, although extreme tip is bent slightly upwards. [with] B) PRUSSIAN MODEL 1873 “BLUCHER” SABER AND SCABBARD. The first of the new M1873 sabers (commonly referred to as “Blucher sabers”) produced by the Prussian Army for its mounted troops utilized blades repurposed from French sabers captured during the Franco-Prussian War and modified to Prussian specifications. Reverse-P, steel hilt with leather wrapped grips; the 29 ¾ in. L x 1 ¼ in. W blade has a single, wide fuller extending to the tip with French touchmarks and ‘2264’ at ricasso and bears ‘Manufre de Chatelerrault Fevrier 1851’. Steel scabbard with integral bands with suspension rings and drag. CONDITION: Very good overall. The scabbard with its original finish and blade bright with crisp markings. JLK

A) Spanish cup-hilt rapier measuring 44" overall with a straight tapered 37-1/4" ovoid blade with illegible markings. Bell cup, riveted to the crossguard. One-piece fluted bone grip of circular section, toadstool pommel. CONDITION: Blade and hilt showing general wear, the blade with moderate pitting overall. Bone grip excellent with no cracks or chips. B) Brass mounted smallsword measuring 38-1/4" overall with a 32" colichemarde blade, hollow-ground and triangular in cross-section. Clam shell guard features relief human figure and foliate motifs on both sides. Rapier style hilt, knuckle bow decorated with relief human figure and foliate designs. Round pommel with capstan decorated en suite. Grip is wrapped with twisted brass wire with a braided ferrule at top and bottom. CONDITION: Excellent, the blade is bright with a few dark spots, brass hilt with a toned patina and tight wire wrap. DG

The following swords are composites produced utilizing old and recently produced components. All have been heavily cleaned to mask the new components. The lot consists of: A) Silver mounted sword with four slot guard, the slightly curved blade with a fuller wide fuller running its full length and a narrow fuller on each side. Fluted guard and pommel, green dyed bone grip with flat silver wrap. The scabbard is recently produced with embossed leather on one side and with silver mounts. CONDITION: Bone grip shows repairs at the pommel, blade cleaned and shows areas of minor pitting. B) Silver mounted sword with four slot guard, the slightly curved blade with narrow fuller running 2/3 its length, stamped "T. Graven". Green dyed fish skin grip with flat silver wrap, lion pommel with chain connecting to the guard. The scabbard is recently produced with embossed leather on one side and with silver mounts. CONDITION: Excellent as cleaned and rebuilt. C) Silver mounted cuttoe, the slightly curved blade has a narrow fuller running 2/3 its length and is marked "SKG HARVEY" on one side and with a running fox mark on the opposite. There is an rectangular shaped small sheet silver washer at the top of the blade, above which is a shell decoration flanked by a chased and engraved "S" shaped guard with integral ferrule at the base of the grip. The grip is ebony with flat silver wrap. The scabbard is recently produced with embossed leather on one side and with silver mounts. CONDITION: Excellent as produced and cleaned. D) Silver mounted cuttoe with slightly curved blade which has a wide fuller running its full length and a narrow fuller on each side. There is an oval shaped small sheet silver washer at the top of the blade, above which is a shell decoration flanked by a chased and engraved "S" shaped guard with integral ferrule at the base of the grip. The grip is green dyed bone. The scabbard is recently produced with embossed leather on one side and with silver mounts. CONDITION: Blade has been cleaned bright with small areas dark staining and light pitting. DG

E) Large leather shot pouch measuring 11" overall with a carved horn spout and plug. CONDITION: Leather is stiff and has a small rip on one side.
