Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Attributed To William F Cody (Buffalo Bill)

Lot # 44 (Sale Order: 44 of 403)

.52 caliber, 22" barrel, S/N C.26310, marked on the barrel with "Sharps Rifle Co, Hartford Conn.," then behind the rear barrel sight "New Model 1863." Walnut stock and forearm.  Hand carving on the inside of the forearm "Wm F Cody".  The serial number on the bottom of the barrel is the same as the upper tang.  The barrel and the frame have a nice even gray to brown patination. The stock and forearm shows use with darkened areas in the wood along with nicks and dings.  The bore is excellent.

Widely known for his showmanship and hunting prowess, William, Buffalo Bill, Cody was first and foremost a soldier.   Enlisting at the age of 17 in 1863, Cody begin his military career as a teamster with the rank of private in Company H of the 7th Kansas Cavalry Volunteers.  Cody's military career ended upon his discharge in 1865.

This Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 with serial number C26310 was issued to Companies A, B and H of the 7th Kansas Cavalry Volunteers "Jennison's Jayhawkers".  Not uncommon, many soldiers would mark, brand or even carve their names into the stock or other wood parts.  This Sharps New Model 1863 is hand carved on the inside of the forearm with "Wm. F. Cody".  The carving appears to be as old as this rifle.

Accompanying this Sharps New Model 1863 is a file folder containing all the documentation of the loan agreement with Buffalo Bill Museum of the West.  Included are photographs of the exhibit, loan agreements, appraisal and research.  Being on exhibit since 2010, this could be one of the only opportunities to own a Buffalo Bill attributed and documented firearm related to his service days with Jennison's Jayhawkers.  This is a very special and historical firearm related to the early years of William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody.
