Large Antique Percussion Halfstock Punt or Market Gun, by Lane & Read of Boston, Mass., NVSN, 1" smoothbore cal., 42.5" round barrel with small brass bead front sight, cannon-turned rings at juncture with 4-3/8" 16-sided section ahead of 8" octagonal breech section measuring 1-5/8" across the flats, and marked "Lane & Read, Boston" on top. Back-action lock is marked "Lane & Read" with scroll engraving, has nipple bolster with large sweeping flash shield, "dolphin head" hammer. Iron furniture includes trigger guard with pineapple front tang and long rear, straight buttplate with long top tang, all engraved en suite. Black walnut halfstock has 4 oval German silver barrel key escutcheons, matching nose cap and lower ramrod ferrule (with 2 iron ferrules on lower barrel rib retains the hickory ramrod). Made ca. 1840s-60s. Condition is very good retaining traces of barrel blue mixed with brown patina and scattered light oxidation, else dark gunmetal having fine edges, engraving and markings. Stock is sound and generally smooth with a 7.5" crack beneath the lower rod ferrule and a 13.5" replaced section of matching wood on the left side extending from breech to nose cap, with 4 filled (screw?) holes below, and an old patch of filler on right side of upper barrel tang. Action is strong and smooth, bore is clean. Used mainly on the Atlantic seaboard, punt/market guns were able to bag entire flocks of ducks and other waterfowl with a single shot. Est.: $1.800-$2,400. Antique American "Mule Ear" Action Percussion Rifle, NVSN, .50 cal., 30" octagonal barrel has buckhorn style sights and under-rib with single brass thimble supporting the brass-tipped hickory ramrod. Engraved lockplate has matching side-action or "Mule Ear" hammer, thin metal nipple flash guard. Slim walnut halfstock has brass furniture incl. scrolled trigger guard, 5" domed patchbox, crescent buttplate with long lower tang, small oval sideplate, pewter nose cap, 8 copper and brass star-crescent moon-diamond inlays and 2 mother-of-pearl hearts. Made ca. mid-1800s. Condition is very good, the barrel showing a generally smooth blue-brown color, dark lock, and age-toned brass. Stock is sound and smooth with 1.75" replaced wood at toe, 3" replaced sliver at right nose cap, 3.25" carved-out area where ramrod enters, missing 3 copper inlays. Antique Unmarked American Heavy-Barrel Percussion Underhammer Rifle, perhaps by Nicandor Kendall of Vermont, NVSN, .38 cal., 31" round bull barrel has 7.5" octagonal breech section with long dovetailed notch rear sight, 6" upper tang. Underhammer action is enclosed within stock wrist, has bowl-shaped brass nipple flash-guard, unique flat-bottom steel trigger guard with spurred rear finger-hold mounted on brass floorplate, stub trigger. Varnished walnut stock has arrow-shaped brass wrist escutcheons, 5.75" brass patch box, 1.75" high German-silver bust of a stag on carved cheekrest, iron crescent buttplate with separate lower tang. Made ca. 1830s-40s likely in New England by a quality maker, with blued finish and casehardened hammer. Condition is very good to near fine, retaining traces of blue and darkened case colors, else smooth gray gunmetal having sharp edges and details. Whitmore/Potsdam, N.Y." on top flat and "A.D. Sabin" at right, have drum nipple bolsters and 3 metal ferrules at each side rib for the 2 hickory ramrods of different calibers. Long, slim iron frame has twin hammers and triggers, removable left sideplate. Short walnut buttstock has 4" round brass patchbox, brass crescent buttplate with long tangs, brass collar at frame juncture, scrolled brass trigger guard. Made ca. 1840s-60s. Condition is about fine, retaining approx. 80% smooth blue-brown to barrels, 90% brown color to frame, bright brass, and fine markings. Stock is sound and smooth with a German silver Star of Bethlehem at left side. Actions are smooth, the .50 cal. smoothbore shows mild roughness, the .40 cal bore is clean with fine rifling. Very Rare American Percussion Lever-Action Vertical-Turret Revolving Rifle, by P.W. Porter, 2nd Model, #436, .44 cal., 28" octagonal barrel, unique offset sights, marked "Address/P.W. Porter/New-York" and "P.W. Porter's/Patent/1851" at left angled flat. Nine-shot, 3.5" dia. vertical turret (cylinder) is rotated/locked and the "mule-ear" (side action) hammer is cocked by lowering the lever, then fired by the normal trigger. Original mfg'd with a serpentine loading lever atop the barrel/breech and a circular magazine to automatically feed percussion caps, both of which were removed during its period of use. Varnished straight walnut buttstock has an iron crescent buttplate. Mfg'd 1850s by G.P. Foster of Taunton, Mass., with blued barrel and casehardened frame and turret, in qty. of just 350-400 guns. Condition is very good with traces of darkened original barrel blue, the frame and turret being smooth brown gunmetal with fine edges and markings. Wood is sound with generally minor age and use marks, and much original finish. Action is defective (won't hold cock), bore is clean with very good rifling. Hard to find in any condition. U.S. Model 1842 Percussion Pistol, by Henry Aston of Middletown, CT, NVSN, .54 cal., 8.5" round barrel, brass blade front sight, "WN" (Walter North) inspector's mark at breech. Beveled flat lockplate is marked "US"/H.Aston" under bolster, "Middtn/Conn./1850" vertically to rear. Brass fittings include trigger guard with rear tang reaching to round buttcap with backstrap extending to barrel tang, curved sideplate made integral with front band. Walnut halfstock. Condition is very good, the iron surfaces (originally bright) a generally smooth, deep aged brown (pitting in nipple area) with good edges and markings. Brass shows aged patina, scattered light verdigris, nicks at butt. Captive stirrup ramrod is missing. Stock is sound and smooth with minor age and use marks, lacks left-side inspector's cartouche. Johnson Model 1836 Smoothbore Flintlock Pistol, converted to percussion, NVSN, approx. .54 cal., 8.5" round barrel, backstrap with integral butt cap, brass front blade sight and the yolk supporting the percussion conversion nipple base. Varnished one-piece wood stock. Markings include correct "U.S./N.W.P./P" proof on top of barrel at breech, "U.S./JOHNSON/MIDDN/CONN/1840" on lockplate in front of hammer, plus two inspector cartouches on left side of stock above the trigger group "MPL" (for Major M. P. Lomax, U.S. Army) and "EB" (for Elzur Bates). Overall condition of this martial pistol is good, displaying an even gray/brown patina to iron metal surfaces and a pleasing taffy-colored patina to brass parts. Iron fittings incl. trigger guard with 2 finger-ridges, sling ring and 7" hinged compartment in stock belly for tools (not present), buttplate marked "1" on tang, 25.25" sliding spike bayonet spring retained between 2 mounts at muzzle. Mfg'd ca. 1836-39 with brown lacquer finish and casehardened breechblock, in just 6,135 qty. Condition is very good, showing cleaned bright metal having scattered light roughness, darkened breechblock case colors, sharp edges and markings. Long receiver has 5.75" hinged top lever (marked "7/38" inside) that actuates an internal plunger for loading paper cartridges. 6.5" flat lockplate is marked "N.P. Ames/Springfield/Mass." and "Wm. Jenks" to rear of mule-ear side hammer. Oil-stained walnut fullstock has brass trigger guard, flat buttplate, 3 screw-retained bands (top with integral blade sight). Mfg'd 1844 in just 1,000 rifles. Condition is very good, retaining no barrel brown or case colors, being bright metal with fine edges and clear markings. Iron trigger guard without a sling swivel, round 3" brass patch box, flat brass buttplate without tangs, 1.25" clipped-corner rectangular brass plate inlaid ahead of buttplate, "L"-shaped iron sideplate, single spring-retained iron band, flat brass nose plate, iron ramrod with brass trumpet head. Oil-stained walnut stock is sound and smooth, lacks inspector's cartouche opposite lock. Barrel shortened from original 42", ramrod shortened and without threads. Condition is very good as configured, the iron being generally smooth brown/gray gunmetal with scattered oxidation and very good edges and markings. Mfg'd 1881. Condition is fine, retaining much darkened military blue, silvered case colors, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth with sharp cartouche, encircled "P" and "B.D.B." at belly, pleasing color and finish. Action is crisp, bore is clean with fine rifling. This rifle falls in the Model 1879 serial range but retains the straight receiver-barrel juncture. Springfield Armory Model 1884 Trapdoor Carbine, #341259, .45-70 cal., breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1884", 22" barrel has a faint "VP(eagle)P" at the back and a M1884 sight with a M1890 sight protector band. Lockplate is marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" with an eagle, and the three-click hammer works well. The metal was period refinished and is in very good condition with patina on the triggerplate. Stock is very good but was sanded leaving the cartouche and "(circle)P" proof faint. This is a correct M1884 carbine made in 1886. Action works properly, bore is frosted with good rifling. Stock is sound and smooth with a few scattered age and use marks, a half-inch gouge below the top band, feathering to buttstock grain, pleasing color and finish. William Mason Model 1861 Muzzleloading Rifle/Musket, .58 cal., 40" barrel is marked "V/P/(eagle)" and dated 1863 at the back. The wide, flat barrel bands are "U" marked, and the swelled ramrod is full length and threaded. Lockplate is marked "(eagle)" then "U.S. Wm MASON/TAUNTON" and dated 1863. The two-click hammer works properly. Metal is very good but was cleaned leaving some markings partial, and there is light pitting around the nipple. Stock is in very good condition with light handling marks and one dent in front of the lockplate. The boxed script cartouche is excellent. Bore is good with light rust. Mason delivered 30,000 muskets to the U.S. Government in 1863 which were shipped in the white. Est.: $1,600-$2,200. (Antique)

Nikitits Erben Constantinople" (the retailer in modern-day Istanbul) at left. 2-1/8" long cylinder is roll-engraved with a scene of a suspension bridge and sailing ships below. Varnished one-piece hardwood grip. Mfg'd late 19th century. Condition is excellent, retaining approx. 85% blue, with scattered oxidation, bright cylinder with sharp scene, and strong case colors. Grips with light marks and most original finish. Colt Transitional Model 1848-49 Percussion Pocket Revolver, the so-called Baby Dragoon or Squareback Pocket, #15661, .31 cal., 5" barrel, 2-line maker's name and address enclosed by brackets, with loading lever below. Cylinder has the stagecoach holdup rolled scene, rectangular stop slots, and a "2" outside the serial number box. Frame has a tiny "Colts/Patent" set well back, early domed screwheads, squareback trigger guard marked "8" at left web, "x" left bolster, and early short trigger. Mfg'd 1850, with blued barrel/cylinder, casehardened frame/hammer, silver-plated brass straps with 1-pc. varnished walnut grip. Lever and plunger have a thin blued finish that appears original. Condition is fine retaining approx. 85% thinning barrel blue, gunmetal-gray cylinder with clear scene and 3 safety pins intact, fine edges and markings, 35% silver to straps, sound and smooth grip having added varnish. U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1863 Type 2 Muzzleloading Rifle/Musket, .58 cal., 40" barrel marked "VP(eagle)" and 1863 at the back, bolster has an eagle stamp on the side and the rear sight was oil blackened. Barrel, trigger group, U-marked bands and buttplate are in the white. There is slight roughness near the nipple from firing. The original ramrod is full length and threaded. Lockplate is marked "(eagle)U.S./SPRINGFIELD" and dated 1863. Lockplate was oil blackened and the hammer is color case hardened, both in very good condition. Stock is very good+ with the slightest handling wear and two crisp cartouches; "ESA(circled)" and "TBH(boxed)" are stamped on the left flat. Buttplate has some rust which can be cleaned. Clement of Springfield, Mass., NVSN, .58 cal., 40" barrel has block-blade front sight (doubles as bayonet lug) and folding-leaf rear, is marked "V/P/(eaglehead)", "1864" and "L.F.R." at breech, has M-1863 type bolster with "(eagle)", typical of contractors this late in the war. Beveled lockplate has "(Federal Eagle)/U.S." and "S.N. & W.T.C./ For/Massachusetts" ahead of hammer, "1864" behind. Oil-stained walnut fullstock has trigger guard with swivel, buttplate marked "US" at top, 3 spring-retained bands, nose cap retaining the tulip-head ramrod. Mfg'd. 1864. Condition is near-fine with lightly-toned bright steel, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound showing scattered mostly-light marks of age and military use. Receiver marked "Burnside Patent./March 25th, 1856/21634" at breech, has guide screw at right side, sling ring and bar at left, lever-actuated dropping/pivoting breechblock (marked "21634") with percussion nipple that fires the unique tapered brass cartridge made without internal primer. Back-action lock is marked "Burnside Rifle Co./Providence, R.I.", "D" behind. "H" inspector's mark in numerous places. Oil-finished tapered walnut forearm held by a band, matching straight buttstock has illegible inspector's cartouche at left wrist, sling swivel at belly and a crescent buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65 with blued finish, casehardened frame. Condition is very good retraining no blue, silvered case colors, smooth gray gunmetal with fine edges and clear markings. Boston, Mass./Pat'd. March 6, 1860" over chamber, "9065" to rear, has Stabler cut-off device below (for single-shot operation), has operating lever that drops open breech to receive cartridges from 7-shot magazine tube in buttstock, left-side sling ring and bar. Oil-finished tapered forearm has band, matching straight buttstock a sling swivel at belly and crescent buttplate with door opening to mag. Mfg'd 1865-66. Condition is very good, retaining no factory finishes but smooth brown gunmetal having scattered oxidation, fine edges and markings. Stocks are sound with the expected marks of age and military use, incl. a 2" crack and .5" wood loss on forearm at left frame juncture, buttstock with a 5.5" secure crack emanating from left side of buttplate, both with added varnish. Narrow receiver is marked "Edward Maynard/Patentee/May 27, 1851/Dec. 6, 1859" at left ahead of sling bar/ring, Mass. Arms Co. info at right, "1865" on lower tang. Oil-finished walnut buttstock has semi-crescent buttplate. Mfg'd 1865. Condition is fine+ retaining approx. 95% darkening military blue, hints of mottled case colors, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound with the expected marks of age and military use, two clear "SWP" (Samuel W. Porter) and "JM" (likely Maj. Julian McAllister) inspectors' cartouches at left wrist.
