WWII Japanese Officer's Shin-Gunto Sword

Lot # 300 (Sale Order: 306 of 842)

WWII Japanese Officer's Shin-Gunto Sword, with a 25.25" machine made, oil tempered, shinogi-zukuri style blade. Tang is unsigned with one hole. Blade has gunome style wavy hamon temper line. Japanese Model 1883 Naval Officer's Sword

Lot # 303 (Sale Order: 309 of 842)

Japanese Model 1883 Naval Officer's Sword, used through the end of WWII. Old family blade fitted to the mounts measures 26.5" in length, shinogi-zukuri shape, irregular gunome undulating temperline hamon, medium point, stylized dragon and ken horimono on one side, two small grooves and a bonji character carved on the other side. Tang is signed with a two-character signature "Yasutomo", and the bottom tip of the tang has been cut off to fit in these mounts. There were 9 generations of swordsmiths that worked in the Rikuzen area from about 1655 to 1848 that used that name, it is hard to tell which one it might be, but the tang patina tends to put in the later period, probably the late 1700's to early 1800's. The habaki is gold foil over copper with a family mon engraved on both sides. A similar small silver mon is attached to the backstrap of the handle. There are three seppa spacers on top of the guard and two below next to the habaki. The long "D"-guard handle features the nine-leaf pattern decoration for ensign through captain ranks. The fuchi and backstrap are stippled. At the top of the backstrap is a cherry blossom with engraved leaves with a similar motif on top of the pommel. Grip is grooved wood covered with white rayskin and wrapped with three small wires, one twisted and two straight. Scabbard is wood covered in sharkskin, with three brass fittings decorated with cherry blossoms and engraved leaves. There are two hanging rings on the upper two fittings. There is a folding lock to secure the sword in the scabbard. OAL is 37". Condition is good, the blade showing numerous edge nicks, rust stains, rust spots, some minor pitting near the tip which has a large piece broken off at the end, and minor scratches and scuffs in various areas of the blade. Blade tang has been lightly cleaned. The habaki shows minor scuffs and light wear from use. Handle fittings show age darkening to the gold gilt finish, and wear from use. The rayskin on the grip show soiling and age, with all the grip wire intact and tight. Scabbard shows various nicks, scrapes, scratches, and small gouges to the sharkskin covering. Scabbard fittings show age darkening to the gold gilt finish, with two straight line-shaped dents to the bottom drag fitting on one side. Est.: $1,500-$2,500.
