U.S. Bridesburg/Springfield Model 1863 Percussion Rifle/Musket

Lot # 49 (Sale Order: 51 of 842)      

U.S. Bridesburg/Springfield Model 1863 Percussion Rifle/Musket, .58 cal., 40" percussion barrel, marked (V P(eagle)" but the date is not visible due to heavy pitting around the nipple. The M1863 full-length ramrod is present. Lockplate is marked "(eagle)" with "US/BRIDESBURG" and "1863" at the back with some staining. The two-click M1863 hammer works properly. Stock has two cartouches, "ESA (Springfield)" and script in a box. Stock was lightly sanded with an "A" carved behind the tang and is in nice condition. Bridesburg muskets were M1861 with flat bands; this musket is a M1863 Springfield with a Bridesburg lockplate. Bore is good with rifling to the muzzle and light rust. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)

Rare Civil War U.S. Model 1861 Percussion Rifle-Musket, by William Muir & Co. of Windsor Locks, Conn., NVSN, .58 cal., 40" barrel has block-blade front sight (doubles as bayonet lug) and folding-leaf rear, is marked "V/P/(eaglehead)" and "1864" at breech, has M-1863 type bolster with "(Eagle)", typical of contractors this late in the war. Beveled lockplate has "(Federal Eagle)/U.S." and "Wm. Muir & Co./Windsor Locks, CT." ahead of hammer, "1864" behind. Oil-stained walnut fullstock has trigger guard with swivel, buttplate marked "US" at top, 3 spring-retained bands, nose cap retaining the tulip-head ramrod. Mfg'd 1864. Condition is about fine with lightly-toned bright steel, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound showing scattered mostly-light marks of age and military use, has been smoothed and re-stained. Beveled flat lockplate is marked "E. Whitney/US" ahead of hammer, "N. Haven/1850" vertically behind. Brass fittings inclunde trigger guard with sling swivel, flat buttplate marked "US" at top, 7.75" patch box opening to stock trap for spare parts (none present), serpentine sideplate, 2 spring-retained bands (upper of the double-strap type with sling swivel). Oil-finished walnut fullstock, correct early brass-tipped iron ramrod. Mfg'd 1850. Condition is very good with cleaned barrel/lock, showing scattered oxidation, toned brass, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth with two faint inspectors' cartouches opposite lock, minor marks, was lightly sanded and re-oiled. Action is crisp, bore is clean with fine rifling. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. Lamson & Co./Windsor,VT/U.S./Balls Patent/June 23, 1863/Mar. 15, 1864" ahead of sling ring at left. Oil-finished 3/4-forend has two bands, matching buttstock and carbine buttplate. "S" inspector's mark in various places. Mfg'd 1864-1865, in only 1,002 qty. Condition is good with perhaps 25% thinning/darkening blue and silvered case colors, sharp edges and markings. Spencer Model 1865 Lever Action Carbine, #6869, .50 RF cal., 20" barrel, block-blade front sight and vacant rear dovetail, back-action lock has sling ring/bar at left, distinctively-shaped receiver has serpentine trigger guard/lever that loads cartridges from 7-rd. tubular magazine within the buttstock. Oil-finished walnut forend is retained by a single band, matching buttstock has a sling swivel and semi-crescent buttplate with removable magazine. Mfg'd 1865-66. Condition is good to very good, retaining no original finishes and having scattered pitting that has obscured all original markings but serial number. Forend has wear, use marks, cracks emanating from receiver at both sides; buttstock shows wear, dings, wood loss at sling ring, long cracks behind the lock at both sides. Arms Co./Chicopee Falls" at right, "Edward Maynard/Patentee/May 27, 1851/Dec. 6, 1859" at left ahead of sling ring/bar. Lever releases barrel from standing breech with boxlock hammer. Oil-finished walnut straight buttstock has "AJN" and "JM" inspectors' cartouches at left wrist, crescent buttplate. Mfg'd 1863-65. Condition is very good, retaining approx. 75% darkening and thinning blue, silvered frame showing scattered oxidation, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth with clear cartouches and a 7"x.5" wood replacement at top-left, professionally done (perhaps of the period). Action is smooth, bright bore shows strong rifling. Frame with "Colts/Patent" at lower left has brass straps and a 1-piece varnished walnut grip. Mfg'd 1854, with blued barrel and cylinder, casehardened frame, lever and hammer, silver-plated straps. Condition is very good retaining perhaps 60% thinning and darkening blue, else dark gray/brown metal, traces of case colors to lever and hammer, clear cylinder scene, sharp edges and markings. Straps retain 70% silver plate, tarnished almost black. Grip is sound and smooth showing light wear and handling marks and most original varnish. All visible serial numbers match. Mfg'd ca. 1859-68, with blued barrel and cylinder, casehardened frame, lever and hammer, and silver-plated straps. Condition is very good, retaining perhaps 40% thin barrel blue, traces of blue on cylinder with clear panel scenes, toned brass, sharp edges and markings. Antique Colt Round-Barrel Ejectorless Pocket Revolver, #311250, .38 RF cal., 3.5" barrel, dovetailed blade front sight, maker's name and address in 2 lines, specifically made for this model and not converted from percussion. Frame with 2-line 1871-72 patent dates at left was cut for rebated cylinder with the rolled stagecoach holdup scene, has cartridge conversion ring at front of recoil shield and brass straps ("36 Cal" stamped over "31 Cal" at left bolster), one-piece varnished walnut grip. Mfg'd ca. 1873-80. Condition is very good, retaining 90% bright nickel on steel parts, 35% on straps (knackering at butt), sharp edges and markings including crisp cylinder scene. Grips are sound with light wear and 50% original varnish. All visible serial numbers match. Action is inoperative (cylinder frozen), bore is clean with very good rifling. Cased Pair of Civil War Colt Model 1860 Revolvers, #160150 and #89431, .44 cal., 8" "streamlined" barrels have 1-line "New-York U.S. America" addresses, patented "creeping" loading levers. Rebated cylinders with rolled naval scenes and serials within boxes. Frames have "Colts/Patent" at left, #89431 is cut for stock, steel backstraps, brass trigger guards, 1-pc. varnished walnut grips. #160150 mfg'd 1866, #89431 mfg'd 1863. Condition of #160150 is near fine, retaining 50% barrel blue, scattered cleaned erosion, fine edges and markings. Cylinder with traces of blue, scene partially obscured by erosion. Frame and lever show case colors, some screws niter blue. Backstrap with 20% blue, trigger guard with 90% silver, sound and smooth grips have added varnish. Visible serial numbers match. Action is crisp, bore is clean with excellent rifling. Condition of #89431 is good, showing no original finishes (barrel may have added color), scattered cleaned erosion, cylinder scene obscured by pitting but serial appears to match, good edges and markings, toned brass, sound and smooth grips with added varnish. Visible serial numbers match. Action is crisp, bore is clean with fine rifling. 15.5"x10" rosewood-paved case has vacant brass escutcheon in lid, is lined in red velveteen and partitioned in the English style for both revolvers, bullet mold and powder flask (latter two not present), a 250-ct. Eley cap tin with partial green label (empty) and a number of assorted-caliber lead balls. Case and lining are very good and complete, of the period, but re-purposed for these revolvers. Civil War-Era National Arms Co./Moore's Patent Front-Loading Pocket Revolver, with Extremely Rare Original Pictorial Green Pasteboard Box, Printed Instruction Sheet and One Cartridge, #5503, .32 Teatfire cal., 3.25" barrel marked "Moore's Pat Fire Arms Co. Brooklyn N.Y." on top with engraved sunburst at breech and hinged extractor at right. Plain round 5-shot cylinder is marked "D. Williamson's Patent January 5, 1864" on rear periphery. Brass frame has scroll-and-punch dot engraving at sides, central hammer, integral spurtrigger sheath and "bird's head" straps with 2-pc. smooth gutta-percha grips. Mfg'd ca. 1864-70 (when sold to Colt's Pat. F.A. Mfg. Co.) with blued barrel and cylinder, and silver-plated frame. Condition is very good+ retaining traces of barrel blue in protected areas and perhaps 20% thinning/darkening silver, sharp engraving and clear markings, sound and smooth grips. Action is crisp, lockup tight, bore is bright with sharp rifling. Very rare factory 2-pc. green pasteboard box (measures 7.5"x2.75") has fine printed label with large engraving of this revolver (stain at top, but all clear), solid joints (missing 1" piece of front "lip"). Original 5"x8" printed instruction sheet headed "Advantages of the/New National Revolver" is complete and clean with light age and oil staining. Original 1.25" copper cartridge with projecting rear teat, is clean with age patina. These revolvers used proprietary front-loading cartridges to evade S&W's Rollin White patent for bored-thru cylinders. An amazing find. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)

Colt Factory Conversion of Model 1861 Navy Percussion Revolver to Metallic Cartridge, #3753, .38 CF cal., 7.5" round "streamline" barrel with 1-line "U.S. America" address has former lever channel plugged, right-side ejector added. Six-shot round cylinder shows rolled naval scene and "Colts Patent No. 190". Open-top frame has added conversion ring with bottom-hinged loading gate (no. "466") at right, "Colts/Patent" and 2-line 1871-72 patent dates at left, brass straps with 1-piece varnished walnut grip. Mfg'd ca. mid-1870s. Condition is good, retaining traces of barrel blue in lug area, traces of hammer case colors, else generally smooth brown gunmetal having fine edges and markings (light dings in ejector area). Cylinder scene is visible. Arbor is no. "466", wedge is unnumbered. Grips are sound showing scattered marks (nick at butt), light wear and likely original varnish. Very Scarce Post-Civil War Frank Wesson Large Frame Superposed Pistol, with Sliding Dirk, 3rd Type, NVSN, .41 Short RF cal., 3" octagonal barrel group manually rotates on central axis, has 1-7/8" sliding dirk blade in middle rib, marked "Frank Wesson Worcester, Mass. Pat. Dec. 15, 1868, July 20, 1869" at top barrels. Brass spurtrigger frame has bottom barrel release button, integral straps with 2-piece varnished rosewood "bird's head" grips. Mfg'd ca. 1868-80 in only 2,000 qty. est. Condition is good retaining no blue but sharp edges and lettering. Frame appears to have been gold (or brass) plated, approx. 75% of which remains. Grips show light wear with a half-inch grain crack at right and most original finish. Action is crisp, dirk operates smoothly, barrel lockup is tight, clean bores show light roughness and fine rifling. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)

Pre-Civil War New Haven Arms Co. "Volcanic" Lever-Action Pocket Pistol, NVSN, .31 cal., 3.5" octagonal barrel marked "New Haven Conn. Patent Feb. 14, 1854" on top flat, has integral cartridge magazine with brass follower underneath. Brass frame has notched iron sight dovetailed at rear, removable sideplates, central hammer, bottom actuating lever with finger loop, integral flat-butt straps with 2-pc. varnished smooth walnut grips. Mfg'd 1857-60, with blued barrel and bright frame, in just 850 qty. estimated. Condition is good retaining traces of blue, the brass having a soft age patina, fine edges and markings. "MM G" has been scratched into the right removeable sideplate. Grips are sound showing wear (esp. at butt sides), with much original varnish. The right grip has a hole in the bottom, approx. .25" wide. Magazine follower spring is missing. Action functions but does not hold cock, bore shows overall moderate erosion and fair rifling. Very Rare "Volcanic" Lever Action Repeating Pistol-Carbine, #18, .41 cal., 16.5" octagonal barrel is marked "The Volcanic/Repeating Arms Co./Patent New Haven Conn,/Feb. 14, 1854" on top flat, has integral cartridge magazine with brass follower underneath. Large brass frame has elevation-adjustable notched rear sight, central hammer, actuating lever with finger loop, integral straps with 2-pc. varnished walnut grips, two backstrap cutouts and screw at butt for attachable shoulder stock (the latter not present). Frame has small cryptic marks stamped below hammer at right and what may be illegible proof marks at right front, the cartridge lifter has what may be Asian (?) markings. Mfg'd 1855-57 with blued barrel and bright brass frame. Condition is fair to good, the iron barrel and magazine are heavily pitted (but with readable lettering), balance of the iron is a deep brown patina. Brass frame was cleaned to bright, is now lightly toned with fine edges. Right grip is smooth, left grip is heavily eroded but sound. Action functions (the cartridge follower and spring are missing), bore shows heavy black-powder erosion and fair rifling. The revolutionary Volcanic arms fired a proprietary, patented self-contained cartridge, and were the forerunners of both Smith & Wesson and Winchester. Exceedingly rare in any condition. Frank Wesson 1870 Small Frame Single-Shot Pocket Rifle, 3rd Type, #2377, .22 RF cal., 10" octagonal barrel is marked "Frank Wesson Worcester Mass./Patented May 31, 1870" at left lug, turns right for loading and extraction. Frame has central hammer, left-side half-cock push button, integral spurtrigger sheath, straps with mortise in flat bottom for skeleton shoulder stock (not present) and 2-piece varnished rosewood grips. Mfg'd ca. 1870-90 with full nickel finish. Condition is very good+, retaining 90% bright barrel nickel with scattered oxidation and spots of light erosion. Frame has 75% nickel with rust darkening mainly to left side. Grips are sound and show wear. Sharp edges and markings. Visible serials match. Action is crisp, barrel hinge tight, bore shows overall moderate erosion and fair rifling. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)**
